The Quotes of The Day

Quote I
Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival. C. S. Lewis

Quote II

“I want to say, shame on this committee for doing this. Apparently … the majority members keep attacking the NPR CEO Katherine Maher because she’s not here. They gave her one-week notice, she’s a brand new CEO and today is her board meeting, her first board meeting as CEO, and you want to haul her in here so that you can rake her over the coals for your partisan issues. Shame on this committee! I’m beside myself. I think it’s outrageous.” Democratic Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette

She enjoys projecting partisanship, Representative DeGette is one of nine impeachment managers arguing for Donald Trump's conviction.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

  • That giant sucking sound you hear. No, it isn't Monica Lewinsky or former Rep. Barney Frank.

  • I guess we have raised economically ignorant generation(s).

  • The difference between RFK Jr. & MushHead? At least RFK Jr. admits he has had a part of his brain eaten by parasites.

  • Sucks to be you Ms. Human Debris.

  • Is comedy making a comeback?

Didn't care for that joke? How about this one?

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked right up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like to buy some cyanide."
The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"
The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband."
The pharmacists eyes got big and he exclaimed, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband! That's against the law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!"
The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife.
The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Well now. That's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription."

On this day: 8 May 1965
The filming of the promotional film for Bob Dylan’s 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' took place at the side of the Savoy Hotel in London. Actors in the background were Allen Ginsberg and Bob Neuwirth. The original clip was actually the opening segment of D. A. Pennebaker's film, Dont Look Back, a documentary on Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England. In the film, Dylan, who came up with the idea, holds up cue cards for the camera with selected words and phrases from the lyrics. The cue cards were written by Donovan, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Neuwirth and Dylan himself. While staring at the camera, he flipped the cards as the song played. Via thisdayinmusic.com

The Neil Young song ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’ was written about Whitten’s heroin use (before he died of an overdose on Nov 18th 1972). Via thisdayinmusic.com

I received the following from Isophorone Blog, a regular contributor to my email In-Box with good stuff. Tonight is no different.

"May 8 is the anniversary of the birth of Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829 - 1869), one of the first American-born composers to achieve international fame. Here is a piece of his called "Columbia." (I couldn't resist!)"

Gender Reveal Party = Genius Award Winners.

A COUPLE have been slapped with a £30,000 fine after dying an entire waterfall a bright blue colour for a gender reveal party.

The unnamed pair triggered a wave of criticism for their distasteful stunt after pouring a chemical down a sight-seeing hotspot.

    72 Stop the presses!

    Biden lies again!

He was in Wisconsin, heralding the construction of a new Microsoft data center, and the White House claimed:

Microsoft President Brad Smith said the U.S. company planned to invest $3.3 billion by the end of 2026 and use artificial intelligence to boost manufacturing and help workers.

The White House said that investment would result in 2,300 union construction jobs and around 2,000 permanent jobs over time.

Bullshit. The number of construction jobs may be accurate, but a data center is a big building filled with electronics, state-of-the-art fire suppression, and a huge air conditioning system.

It does operate 24x7, but you're still talking about a couple of hundred jobs at most.

A number of places in the Northwest have subsidized data centers, only to find that they employ almost nobody.

One rural county 90 minutes east of Portland provided considerable subsidies to get a Google data center, in the belief that "tech workers" would live in the county. Google then provided a free shuttle bus to the workers so they could live in Portland.

"Based on the team's models and data, Katla is emitting somewhere between 12,000 and 24,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each day, the researchers report online this week in Geophysical Research Letters. That's several times higher than previous estimates of emissions from all of Iceland's volcanoes combined—which may be vastly underestimated because only two of that nation's subglacial volcanoes have had their emissions measured in detail."

So the DAC plant, when it reaches peak capacity, will, in a year, suck up about 1.5 to 3 days worth of Katla's CO2. And Katla is just one of the many CO2-emitting volcanoes in Iceland. It is to laugh.

Apparently, in the flick, they witness two big twisters combining into a monster one.

The tornado that flattened Barnsdall, Ok., Monday night was described as a mile-and-a-half wide. On its way from there to Bartlesville, that storm collided with another storm which actually caused the tornado to power down significantly. Lucky B'ville. Not so lucky Barnsdall.

Break even? Never. Carbon "capture" plants are the modern day equivalent of a perpetual motion machine scam. Not thermodynamically possible.
And 36K metric tons is just about ....nothing. It sounds profound, but to actually make a "change" in the climate (according to the smart people), they have to sequester MEGA tons. That's millions of tons.
It is actually part of my job to look at this stuff, and it is appalling just how dumb it all is, because the "smartest" people are all for it.

    Posted by: Romeo13

Actually, it's the top 100 feet of the ocean, where phytoplankton perform photosynthesis and convert CO2 in the water to protein, sugar and oxygen.
There was a hypothesis that dumping huge amounts of powdered iron into the ocean would so stimulate phytoplankton, that they could actually cool the planet! Somebody actually tried it, and...surprise! it didn't work.

Of course, now, a lot of the "warmists" want to chop down the forests, and put the logs in the ocean, to plant new forests that grow faster and capture more CO2 than mature forests.
    It's all madness.

170 They are doing some carbon capture in Alberta and Saskatchewan. But they are catching the CO2 from power plant stack gases, where it is already quite concentrated, and then they liquefy it and pump it into deep oil-producing formations, where hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to keep it in a liquid state. It mixes with the oil as a miscible solvent and helps expedite oil recovery. So, some value is realized.

232 Tankdemon & Hour of the Wolf

There's an extended wordplay joke in Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." I'm not going to go look it up, but this is a pretty accurate summary, I think:

Petruchio tells Kate that she's like a wasp.

Kate says, "If I'm a wasp, then beware my sting!"

Petruchio: "Your sting, Kate? Why, I'll draw it out then!"

Kate: "If only the fool knew where to find it."

Petruchio: Why, Kate! Who doth not know where a wasp bears its sting? In its tail!"

Kate: "Nay, fool! In my tongue!"

Petruchio feigns confusion. "My tongue in your tail? Nay, Kate! I am a gentlemen!"

The Bard made a joke about cunnilingus.

246 Well, I went out to the customary shooting site in the desert, with 3 firearms. Managed to fire 6 whole rounds.

The little H&R top break revolver in .32 S&W short managed three rounds. All others FTF because light primer strikes. Put it back in the range bag.

The Walther P38 with the Gaialoop red dot got two rounds. Round #1 was damned near on the money. Aimed at the right hand swinging paddle, and nailed the left one at about ten yards. Paddles about four inches apart. But the sight and its support makes the slide too heavy, and it would not cycle well enough to eject the spent cartridge, let alone load a fresh one. Worked the slide manually, fired another round, missed both spoons. Again, did not cycle. Will put that back into OEM trim with all the OEM parts. Don't want to mess with recoil springs.

The new built AR9 has a failure to feed issue. Rounds stripped off the mag tip up way high, jam against the rear of the breech, and the lower edge of the breech makes a semi-circular dent in the brass. When I get that sorted out, it will get the red dot.

The lowest relative barometric pressure observed at GSP was 28.73" on Mar. 13th, 1993. There was some sort of snow storm, 9.4" snow on that day, high 34F, low 24F. It dropped to 11F low a couple of days later.

Highest was 30.93" recorded on Feb 13th, 1981. No weather going on that day, other than it was cold.

351 No horrible weather here in Babylon DC. Humid and upper 60s. My ancient condo, built during the Johnson Administration, sent out an email letting us know that the centralize HVAC system we use here has parts that need replaced. Except they don't make this HVAC system anymore, so no parts. They'll have to repair what they have. The company that made it still exists and they'll do it. Yay. I have a love/hate relationship with where I live. Reasonably priced, crime isn't terrible, not bad really. On the other hand, the AC won't be turned on till mid-June. First World Problems.

I read on the interweb (which means totally factual!!!) that Mt. Pinatubo blew it's top in 1990, altering weather patterns for a few years. The Perfect Storm in 91 and the 93 Storm of the Century followed afterwards, so it's plausible. Likely even. I'm not a #SCIENTIST so wth do I know.

387 I see numbers dropping like this at sea, I'm furling in all sails, and deploying the Storm Drogue Chute Sea Anchor, right NOW.

Easier to do so when the not being pummeled on deck, by the storm.

Qualifier. The main Drogue Line, has to be lengthened or shortened to match the set of the waves, and the midships line to the Drogue has to be "trimmed" to fix the storm angle of the hull, to bisect the waves at a 10 to 15 degree bows-on angle.

You gotta do THAT job, out in the howling gales. Ain't no way around it, either.

Looking at the strikes, it stayed mostly east of me here as it moved through. The hot spot now is around Laurens.

423 Congrats to the GOPe for getting suckered once again. You helped the dems throw more US taxpayer dollars at their gargantuan Ukranian money laundering scheme in exchange for supporting Israel as well.

Surely the dems won't pull the football away at the last second this time, Charlie Brown! Don't mind that they're all waving little Ukranian flags and zero Israeli ones. That certainly isn't a portent of things to come.

My own representative has been an embarrassment on that vote and about a dozen others as well this year. Hopefully the dems invest $30 million into trying to flip his seat, I wouldn't be too broken up seeing him go.

Now, that was an impressive bit of long, drawn-out, rolling thunder. Kept going and hit resonances with the windows and house structure. Rattling and vibrating.

    427 Morning, fellow insomaniacals!

I made the mistake of looking at the current temp on the CBS outlet's website. Uh . . . I don't wanna think about it. And it's only early May.

Anyway, I slept abou 6.5 hours and have to go work out. Whadda you got?

    428 Mornin' Wolfus!

Whadda we got? Hmm. 40F right now & looking at mid80s tomorrow. Ugh. It'll be 90, I just know it. We always skip that nice 70ish temp zone and go straight from 'cold' to 'hot'

434 A March 1993 blizzard? I guess it missed Lousy-ana. I can't recall it, really. I know where I was living and working, Miss Linda was in her first year of law school and I was closing in on my own bachelor's in night school. But it apparently was not news here and I don't recall any snow.

438 We do get snow here . . . about once every ten years, briefly, and it makes news. I can recall just about every instance in my lifetime. The biggest was 2-3 days before Christmas in '89. Snow fell starting on a weekday morning. It took me two hours to drive the 30 minutes home. And while it stopped falling after a few hours, the stuff *stayed on the ground* for three days because the temps never went above freezing. The people who never bothered to wrap their exposed water pipes after the last time got burst pipes again, and plumbers made a bundle.

Thunder never seems to upset my two. On the other hand, firecrackers and bacon sizzling in the pan disturb Stirling, the big black cat, to the point that he hides under the bed on NYEve and July 4. Dagny the girl is like, "What's the problem, my human will handle it."

440 Morning, JQ! Yeah, I have to work out. I should go tomorrow too for four times this week, since I'm back on the trail after nearly two weeks with the strange cold that began super-mild, evolved into nightly coughing, and is at last gone.

The local weather mavens keep saying we're going to have a "cold" front tomorrow. Hahahahahah. "Cold" in this case means a high of 80-82 instead of 88. Ooooh, chilly.

That storm began life in the Gulf and it made for a cloudy, very windy, miserable day in San Antonio. That weekend it moved out of the Gulf and on up the East Coast, making for the infamous storm.
