Jerry Seinfeld: the Woke Extreme Left Killed Comedy

Christian Toto:

When host David Remnick asked him about mixing serious themes with comedy he couldn't hold back.

"People always need [comedy] ... they need it so badly and they don't get it," Seinfeld began. "It used to be you'd go home at the end of the day, 'oh, 'Cheers' is on. Oh, 'M*A*S*H*' is on. Oh, 'Mary Tyler Moore' is on. 'All in the Family' is on.' You just expected there will be some funny stuff on TV you can watch tonight.

"But guess what? Where is it? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme Left and PC crap and people worrying so much about offending other people."

...

Seinfeld shared where comedy continues to thrive in our P.C. world.

"Now, they're going to see stand-up comics because we are not policed by anyone ... the audience polices us. We know when we're off track and we know instantly and we adjust to it instantly. But when you write a script ... and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, 'here's our thoughts about your jokes,' then that's the end of your comedy."

"Isn't that what ['Curb Your Enthusiasm'] was all about?" Remnick asked of the just-wrapped series created by "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David. The show routinely broached challenging topics without fear of reprisal.

"Larry was grandfathered in. He's old enough, 'I don't have to observe those rules because I started before you made those rules,'" Seinfeld said, taking on David's voice to make a point.

Seinfeld brought up a classic moment from his self-titled show to bolster his argument against "P.C. crap."

"We did an episode of the series in the '90s where Kramer decides to start a business where homeless pull rickshaws because, as he says, 'they're outside anyway.'" the comedian said. "Do you think I could get that episode on the air today?"

It was a rhetorical statement, and the podcast host treated it as such.

Seinfeld returned to "Curb" to hammer home his point.

"If Larry was 35 he couldn't get away with the watermelon stuff of Palestinian Chicken," he said before adding his "Seinfeld" writing team would pen a different scenario for Kramer in that aforementioned episode.

...

Remnick asked if the woke mindset, which Seinfeld referenced but didn't name check as such, was showing signs of weakness of late.

"Slightly. I see a slight movement... with certain comedians now people are having fun with them stepping over the line and us all laughing about it. Again, it's the stand-ups who are able to do it. No one else gets the blame if it doesn't go down well," he said.

Toto notes that the left immediately began a counter-offensive calling Seinfeld "old," "white" (what a giveaway, eh?), "cranky," and my favorite: "unfunny."

Seinfeld. Not funny.

Sure. Sure.

Other idiots attacked Seinfeld claiming his stand-up act is famously mild and inoffensive, so what does he have to complain about?

1, one person whose speech is not being censored may still object, on principle, to someone being censored for his speech.

2, Seinfeld's stand-up may be famously wholesome, but the TV show that made him a half billion dollars (I'm guestimating) was famously boundary-pushing and edgy.

Idiots.

Below, Adam Carolla plays a clip from the interview.

And then he drops a bomb: five years ago, when he and Seinfeld were at the same event, Seinfeld made a "beeline" over to him to tell him how much he liked what Carolla was doing.

Since Carolla was mostly knocking the left, Carolla takes this to mean that Seinfeld is a -- gasp -- Republican.

He points out the obvious, that if there's any celebrity whose politics you don't know because the celebrity doesn't announce his political affiliation, guess what, you do know his politics, it's the politics you're not allowed to talk about.

This would surprise me because Seinfeld is great friends with that idiot propagandist George Stephanopolous and, as Carolla notes, Larry David is also a huge lefty.

But, food for thought.

Further evidence, maybe? Seinfeld rails against lefty edgy failed comedian Bobcat Goldthwaite.

Here's an old Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, in which, starting at 6:35, Seinfeld rails against Keith Olbermann for being an "insane political demagogue." Though his main complaint seems to be Keith Olbermann shifting from baseball geek to "insane political demagogue" and then back to baseball geek. He also claims "and I like Keith Olbermann."

Eh, I'm not convinced. I think Seinfeld might just think Carolla is funny. He certainly appreciates Carolla's pushback against woke crap, but that doesn't make Seinfeld a Republican. A lot of old liberals are pissed at the woke crap, too.

Time to bust out the Seinfeld DVDs. I think I'll re-watch season 3. I really prefer the later seasons but season 3 will be halfway new to me, because I don't watch it much.

To prove you don't agree with racists, you have to censor any and all hints of racism.

53 Chris Rock made a similar point way before everything went fully bugnuts insane and was just pretty crazy.

From 2014, out of an article covering it in the HuffPo:
Comedian and actor Chris Rock told New York magazine he stopped playing colleges because they've gotten "way too conservative."
...
Not in their political views -- not like they’re voting Republican -- but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody. Kids raised on a culture of “We’re not going to keep score in the game because we don’t want anybody to lose.” Or just ignoring race to a fault. You can’t say “the black kid over there.” No, it’s “the guy with the red shoes.” You can’t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive.
...
"Probably a couple of tours ago," Rock responded. "It was just like, This is not as much fun as it used to be. I remember talking to George Carlin before he died and him saying the exact same thing."

I always interpreted it as Rock saying that they're strictly orthodox and puritanical rather than "conservative," but I'm not going to caught up in nomenclature. Rock said this a *decade* ago, when things were downright tame and sane by comparison.

54 Shane Gillis is a funny guy but Shane Gillis became a thing once people noticed he was willing to make fun of practically anything.

But the part most people miss is...he's decidedly liberal. No question about it. People are just so starved for an actual "both sides" presentation that they're willing to overlook things they might hold against another comedian.

As opposed to vulgar. Back then a lot of comedy was veering toward curse words and vulgarity, I think driven by the freedom of the new HBO market which was giving a lot of attention to some really rude comedians.

Seinfeld was edgy, but mostly in ways that was still appropriate at a family gathering and I think even in the TV show his character avoided the crude stuff like talk about sex or sponges.

84 And even that's pushing it. The common line is, essentially, that without the identity marker, you're forbidden from commenting. How many times have you heard something like, "if you're not a woman, you can't comment on abortion" or "you can't comment on the culture problem in the inner city, because you're not from the 'hood?"

All the damn time.

141 Seinfeld is a great show because every once in a a while, you come across a comment online where someone explains a situation and someone goes “that sounds like a Seinfeld episode” and without fail, down the comment chain someone puts together basically an entire story board and script for the episode which you read and hear the lines in the character’s voices.

You never see someone make a fake Friends episode where Ross gets stuck at the DMV, or a fake HIMYM episode where Ted and Robin discuss texting etiquitte surrounding leaving the person on “Read.” But I bet right now you already have an idea in your head of how those plot lines would go if they were Seinfeld characters.

Only other sitcom I can think of that you can do this sort of thing with is Always Sunny, and their whole schtick is basically “Seinfeld, but if it were really obvious how the whole cast is horrible people.”

Exactly. Somebody years ago said that ELR was like The Dick Van Dyke Show. Not in this universe, it wasn't. Rob and Laura clearly loved each other, and *both* were often shown doing something silly and trying to recover from it. On the other hand, Raymond's wife bullied him, and he spinelessly took it. Very anti-male show.

Still, one great line from Boyle:
His wife: "I don't want to be a trophy wife!"
Him: "A *trophy* wife? What contest in hell did I win?"

I saw Larry David explaining an episode. David worked as a writer for SNL but was not happy and did not feel appreciated. One day, he lost his temper and quit throwing a big temper tantrum. Soon he realized that a salary is a nice thing to have. His friend, upon whom he would base Kramer, told him to pretend it didn't happen and just go back to work. And thus, an episode was born.

242 I saw Larry David explaining an episode.

In interviews Jason Alexander would talk about George's character when reading the script. He'd say that NO ONE would ever do the things that George does.

Then Larry would tell him a story just like that one about the time he DID do those things.

It wasn't. The first roasters took Foxworthy to task because his comedy was clean and expletive-free. The next couple of roasters made it a point to be especially and over-the-top foul, with F-bombs and S-bombs all over the place. I gave it up in less than ten minutes.

Comedy was already being twisted out of recognition I don't know how many years ago.

I still have many parts of his early work, like on the album Why Is There Air?, stored in my mental attic. He was not a dramatic actor, but he acquitted himself well with Robert Culp on I Spy. Look up the episode called "No Return on Damaged Merchandise." The frame story is filled with funny dialog from both guys; the main story is a good spy tale.

ELR was a gem, but I admit a lot of the humor came from certain ethnic traits that not everyone can appreciate.

My favorite Boyle line was when Ray's brother used his name to date a girl, and the girl shows up at Raymond's house so they all think Ray is cheating.

Boyle "What are you doing Ray? You have a problem with a woman, you don't get another woman. Now you got two problems!"

This is the root of the brilliance of Norm MacDonald's bit on the Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget. The showrunner told Norm to be as foul as possible, because that's funny.

Norm MacDonald showed up and told the most milquetoast jokes he could find, just to rebel against that nonsense and set himself apart. Watching it slowly dawn on Bob Saget - and having several others miss it - was the truly hilarious part of the entire exercise.

I am convinced there are hidden allusions in Seinfeld. That was pretty obvious, but another scene where George is the bad boy and gets arrested (with the Jerry Stiller quote "You want a piece of me") well I swear that is reinactment of Rebel Without a Cause, but I have not seen either movie in decades so I can't be positive. Maybe it wasn't Rebel, but it was some other 50s delinquent movie.
Now I guess I could google and there is probably a list somewhere, but I already typed this all up now. anyway.

Now that the personal history is out of the way, I was having this debate the other day with a fellow Seinfeld freak: who was the best Seinfeld boss? Jennifer Aniston is very funny. And as far as I'm concerned Christina Applegate on MWC was the queen.

Which episode of Seinfeld did Jason Alexander not appear?
"The Pen" is the only episode not to feature Jason Alexander as George Costanza. Alexander threatened to quit the show after discovering at the table read that he was not featured in the episode.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A fundraiser for Joe Biden on Monday night was billed as a “Virtual Conversation on Anti-Semitism” with three marquee speakers: Rep. Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who chairs the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee; Nevada freshman Sen. Jacky Rosen; and Jason Alexander — yes, that Jason Alexander, the one famed for his portrayal of George Costanza on “Seinfeld.”

Like the greats, they innovated on the funny-man/straight-man convention.

Gracie is actually the straight man, just funnier. George tries to slip in some laugh lines, but Gracie plays it 100% straight.

Once there were. We always mention Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, but there was an earlier comic named Jean Carroll (no, not *that* Jean Carroll). And more recently we had Rita Rudner. Her wide-eyed "I'm just an ingenue and it's my first time on the stage" look was priceless.

IMO, LMS started off great but got progressively less funny with all the cast changes. New Mandy wasn't very good, the annoying exchange student didn't compensate for seeing much less of Eve, and Jay Leno's character was awful.

347 @234

>>I know we're not supposed to say this, but the greatest comedian of my life was Bill Cosby.

Seinfeld was on Colbert and Colbert asked him who the greatest comedian was and he said Cosby .

Colbert tried hectoring him and he was having none of it.

So Seinfeld may be a lefty but he's probably and old school lefty. The type we used to call a bleeding heart liberal that now we call psychopaths and lunatics.

349 I watched Jerry Seinfeld whenever I could on TV (Carson, Letterman, Evening at the Improv) and was super stoked when his series started. At first it was a kinda Woody Allen NY Jewish comedy but then shifted gears to 50s screwball comedy style. Somewhere around waiting in the Chinese restaurant episode it got its legs then hit the afterburners with the George mistaken for a neoNazi leader episode.

Speaking of Norm Macdonald, in a conversation with Seinfeld about whether Cosby's reputation would be hurt by the news about him, this was Norm's take:

That's classic Norm MacDonald.

353 And the classic line "You are Number Six" was trotted out upstream. I don't think it's a spoiler after nearly sixty years, but warning none the less if you haven't seen one of the greatest TV shows about Man's struggle for individual freedom and refusal to conform.

It was such genius that from episode one, they told you in every opening the answer to the greatest mystery of The Prisoner:

"Who is Number One?"
"You are Number Six."

Just a slight alteration in the delivery

"You are, Number Six."

355 Seinfeld's standup is some of the funniest I've ever seen. I've been to a lot of shows, almost all the big names over the past 5-10 years, and I left Seinfeld with my face legitimately in pain from laughing.

Posted by: Paul Kroenke at April 30, 2024 06:59 PM (cBstr)

356 My guess is Seinfeld is like others proficient in one field and complacent about other fields. It's like Michael Criton's observation about Murray Gell-Man. Murray would read a newspaper article about science and blow his top about its inaccuracy then turn the page to a political article and assume the writer was accurate. Seinfeld does know comedy and sees how lefties have murdered it, but probably still votes for Schumer and Biden because they are outside his field.
