MongoDB CEO Dev Ittycheria talks AI hype and database evolution. (Tech Crunch)

To clarify: He says that AI is mostly hype:
"My life has not been transformed by AI," he said. "Yes, maybe I can write an email better through all those assistants, but it's not fundamentally transformed my life. Whereas the internet has completely transformed my life."
In fact, most of what he says here is refreshingly sensible:
"There's probably like 17 different types of databases, and probably about 300 vendors," Ittycheria said. "There's no customer on this planet that wants to have 17 different databases. The complexity that creates, and the cost of learning, supporting and managing those different technologies becomes overwhelming. It also inhibits innovation, because it creates this tax of complexity."
I'm still meh on MongoDB's license structure, but I recognise the necessity to prevent Amazon simply draining their blood and discarding the lifeless husk.
Huawei's Pura 70 contains SMIC 7nm technology, and also unicorn farts. (The Register)

SMIC doesn't have 7nm technology. It has 14nm with multi-patterning.
The US is reviewing the risks of China gaining a lead in RISC-V technology. (Reuters)

I'm sure they are, but it's irrelevant. RISC-V is an open standard; anyone can create their own implementations of it.

Well, I've gotten a couple of pop ups telling me it's out of memory. I can't think of any other reason why it shut down. It wasn't running hot, Buzzion. It's a mini pc. It turns back on when I press the button.

Huh. Seems it's a known problem with Microsoft and Edge. Windows 10 will do it. Can also happen using Opera. Seems to be a Microsoft problem mostly.

That doesn't always work if you think your current windows will just boot up with all new components. Now if it's a case of just wanting to take all the data you have and having that drive as a secondary you'll be fine.

25 Looks like it's not exactly a 'memory issue' but a virtual memory issue: the amount of memory allocated/available to run the browser. There are other programs or applications running in the background and it's taking all the... 'working memory', leading to the unit shutting itself off to try to 'clean itself up'. When it shuts down it's sort of restarting itself trying to clean or organize all the applications using the virtual memory available for the browser.
Windows especially is infamous for bloat: it runs all kinds of things all the time and if it's Windows 10 or up that'll do it. Are you running Windows?

Thanks. I've already looked at management and I've seen the system using 4G of the 6G available. That's one reason I'm looking for a new one. The one I'm thinking about getting has 16G RAM and 500G HD. A lot better than the 6G and 64G I have right now.

Very few systems nowadays are 32 bit versions. Default installation is 64 bit versions.

37 OrangeEnt, that point is that even if you upgrade to more RAM and a bigger hard drive, check what version of Windows you are using. According to Microsoft, a 32-bit version cannot make use of anything more than 4 GB anyway. In other words, if someone uses Windows 10 32-bit, and then installs Opera, the system, no matter how big, will constantly crash anyway because that 32-bit OS can't use any of the memory past 4GB.

Then the only answer is to trashcan your 32-bit OS and upgrade to the 64-bit, which actually, you know, works.

46 Oh, if you export Epubs with Libre Office you can't read them on Libre Office. Epubs are a kind of HTML file so they don't open, or don't open correctly. You have to open them with a program or app e-reader.

50 I fooled around with epubs almost 15 years ago now and decided they were a royal pain to assemble, went to PDF, and never bothered again. I guess now it's a lot easier. At the time it was a real chore for professionals.
You were basically building a website about your book, not printing your book. I found the process intolerable. Like I say, I guess now it's a lot easier.

That might be a setting you have to turn on. I think even Edge you need to tell it to display the home button somewhere in the settings.

32^2. It isn't caused by WTF.

I have run Windows 10 and Windows 11 on machines with 4 GB RAM up to 32 GB RAM. In all cases, the machines never shut themselves down randomly and most certtainly not do the Edge browser including my home server which has been on for virtually 7 years straight except for software upgrades. I've have used poorly written software with significant memory leaks or race conditions that chew up the available RAM and even those didn't cause the machine to crash. Far more likely there's a bad bad power supply unit in there or something on the motherboard that's triggering it to shutdown.

57 I'm not knocking epubs, they're pretty cool, but at the time building one was a job for people who really knew what they were doing, and I recall all the techie enthusiasm.

"Look! You can click on an image and it takes you to an outside website to enhance your experience! You can search for individual words in the text! You can pinch and grab, resize text, change fonts, and recolor! And, much, much more!"

A lot of it didn't seem to have much to do with 'reading a book'.

Morning, folk! OE, I'm going to ALH when I get to work and post about the Pressbooks and the contest. Pressbooks, as I understand it, creates the ePub when you're ready to publish or export, including exporting to the contest. I think that's why Pressbooks is useful.

It's not hard to use. With no tutorial, on Friday morning I assembled my title page, dedication, and other "front matter," and then the first three chapters of one of my fantasy novels. You can click "Visit book" and see what it would look like on the screen when you're ready.

I'll have to look into it. The only problem I've run into with Opera is a lot of company websites, like credit card accounts don't work well with it. They all seem to want Edge. I have one site that's hard to get into. I don't want to use Edge.

63 This article discusses why the Chrome browsers use so much memory. Generally it has to do with how they manage processes and isolating so they can't write to each other. I'm sure there's better articles discussing this, but I'll leave that as an exercise.

I don't personally know as I haven't used anything Microsoft except for legacy systems (XP) in well over a decade. Last thing I used was 7 on a used tower, and trashed that immediately for Linux. Wait, that's not true, I do have 10 on a laptop but that's for running Corel WordPerfect and that's all it does.

Of course they said it because it's true. You're dealing with the size of the memory space. Which is 32^2. It's called computer. It has nothing to do with poor programming or poor design. Those were the standards at the time which have now changed to 64-bit memory spaces.

I use sigil on a near daily basis. It’s free, robust and pretty darn simple to use. I dredge archive.org for old books in need of updates - new covers, title pages, contents and formatting repair updates and then repost them to ARK.

I've got to think that now any 32bit windows install has got to be some specialty item. Like some piece of hardware with windows as the background OS but even booting up you almost never see the OS and it immediately loads you into the custom program.

Don't mind me too much, I despise Microsoft not just for what they do, but what they could do and don't. I won't use them voluntarily for anything. Just like Google, which I am using right now, I simply assume that if Microsoft is doing it, it's evil, manipulative, or dishonest.

How old is that PC? Going back about a decade Windows was notorious for its sucky sleep mode implementation. The scary one was your damn machine would wake up and nearly set itself on fire and drain the battery for good measure. I use sleep all the time on my Surface Pro 8 and I've never had it not wake up. But I would not be surprised that there's issues out there still.

WTF, but yeah that sounds plausible for that age range. As a workaround, what about using Hibernate? It's it is turned off by default and buried to boot so you have to do some digging around. It's not as fast to recover as sleep is, but it does retain your state and in my experience it's pretty bug-free.

For what it's worth, Microsoft is full of bright and talented software engineers that make pretty great products. As for them being existentially evil, I've lived there, and I've been around that and I've seen what they do in the community so you can go fuck yourself with that one. I just checked the sleep option on my Windows desktop that's the same vintage as your optiplex. I have it set to never and I've never had the issue that you're talking about. I changed that probably 7 years ago hence I had to go look up what I had done.

There are systems and processes which must get approval from the government for certain contracts. Any change can, literally, take years and cost millions of dollars to get approved.

Those people never want to change ANYTHING.

Also, the benefits of 64-bit computing - primarily larger data sets and more addressable memory aren't needed, frankly, by most people.

180 Hey LostInSpace, or anybody who can help; longtime lurker who has a weird Windows Sleep problem.

LostInSpace I read that help page on Windows not turning on after Sleep but my specific issue is that it goes to Sleep after 4 hours of no inputs and boots back up fine after pressing the power button. The problem is that if I Restart or Shutdown after thd PC has been in Sleep it will go through the process for a few seconds then immediately give a BSOD and restart itself. Occasionally it will even BSOD out of nowhere after it’s been in Sleep mode.

This is a new system, built in January, with last gen AMD AM4. Zen3 5600x, MSI motherboard and a RX 7600 GPU. I also put 32GB 40000 mhz DDR4 in it, which might be the problem as I heard Zen3 might not play well with anything over 3600 mhz. But the system runs spectacularly and stable other than this one Sleep problem.

Any ideas?

Dropping the memory down to 3600 is worth a shot, at least.

But if it's stable the rest of the time, it might be a BIOS issue rather than hardware or Windows itself. What model is the motherboard?

I had that issue with my current system. I believe it to be the AMD graphics drivers for some reason.

I turned off sleep and the problem stopped.

The immediate solution I can see is to simply turn sleep off in the control panel. I'm doing this from memory so if I get it wrong don't yell at me. Control panel / Power Options/ Change when the computer sleeps / change put the computer to sleep to never.

After that, your computer should never knock itself out unless you hit the power off or hibernate options.

As a test I would set sleep mode to the shortest time possible and see if the hang-up is based on the time it sits. Some endless loop that takes hours to become a problem.

205 Final word on sleep.

On my desktop I have it completely turned off. Last thing I need is my main server taking a nap on me and screwing everything up.

On my laptops I invoke sleep when I close the lid on the machine and invoke hibernate when I hit the power button. The closing the lid thing rationale is the machine's only going to be down for a few minutes so I don't care. His sleep is doing nasty things in the background. And I use hibernate instead of off because it maintains the state of the box when I restart it.

208 Pixy, it’s a MSI B550M Mortar.

I’ve thought about dropping the RAM down but like I said, she runs awesome (no probs in Cinebench, Video encoding or Gaming) other than the After Wake Up problem.

The BSOD goes by so quick I can’t even read the full error message but something to do with “Page file” and error numbers. I’m no technician just advanced newbie basically.

Thanks for the advice so far everyone. I can always take it off Sleep setting but I liked it for low power usage when I’m not using the thing for hours at a time.
