The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

This time will then go down in history as the period in which the invader was actively invited in by a corrupt elite. And, not only did corrupt elites invite the enemy in, they made the native population pay for it too. Dutch commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek

Quote II

“While a route through this week’s motion of no confidence was absolutely possible, I am not willing to trade my values and principles or do deals with whoever simply for retaining power… I have concluded that repairing our relationship across the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm.” Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf

Once upon a time I purchased a particular breed of dog to be used for hunting. I did my research and I bought a puppy from a respected breeder. Of course the Murphy's have nothing over my surname. I took this wild and belligerent dog to a nationally known trainer for a month. After two weeks I received a call telling me I should come pick up my dog and that I probably should put it down.

At that time, there were not an abundance of "Rescue" facilities. And I certainly just couldn't euthanize this hound from hell. She wasn't mean or vicious. She just ran and ran and ran when off leash or outside a fenced yard. I won't get into thunder storms or fireworks.

So The Fabulous and I were blessed with this pooch until the sweet age of 15+.

Now that I got that out of the way it brings us to the story about South Dakota's governor Kristi Noem. I'm not saying what she did was wrong to her dog. But, I sure as hell wouldn't have told the world I killed a dog that wasn't on death's door.

Kristi Noem's Vice President odds crash after she admitted killing her dog in a pit while her kids were at school
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem now has just a 4% chance of being Trump's VP
Her slide in the VP odds coincides with her dog killing story becoming public
Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Elise Stefanik and Sen. J.D. Vance are the favorite VP picks

There are only 2 camps here Sugar Tits. Those who understand and those who don't. And those who don't understand never will. And those who don't understand outnumber those of who do understand. And just because I understand what you did to a 14 month old doesn't mean I condone your actions.

Being overweight is not healthy. The medical term is not the problem. The problem is with people who do not accept reality.

UCLA medical school is under fire for forcing students to attend ‘health equity’ classes where ‘fat positivity’ is promoted, and reading material claims that the medical term ‘obesity’ is a slur “used to exact violence on fat people.”

46 When dogs go bad....

Years ago, my Sister and BiL (and their kids) had a dog (on their farm, they had MANY dogs over the years), that kept getting out and running with other dogs in their area (very rural, 5-6 miles to the nearest town at least, etc).

My BiL was out in his truck one evening, and saw the dog pack, running loose (there were rumors and more than rumors, of livestock, chickens killed). He saw HIS dog, and knew he was up to no good. And he shot him.
My BiL and sister, as I said, had MANY dogs over the years, and he did love dogs (and they loved him). But sometimes a dog just goes feral, goes bad, is dangerous to people and livestock, and you have to put him down. And the hills around their house are full of coyotes, too. You can hear them at night.

57 True story. Buddy brought his new dog for its first hunting trip. Expensive dog, too. Dog starts hunting, showing great form, hunts for 30 minutes, and then collapses. He had to carry it out of the woods. Turns out it had a defective liver and would never be able to hunt properly. Breeder gave my buddy a refund, but meanwhile his kids had fallen in love with the dog. He was stuck with a yard dog for over 10 years.

His next hunting dog was one that a breeder gave him for free. He found out why it was a free dog. But that's another story.

First was on German civilian culpability in regards to the Final Solution. One contractor tendered bids that promised the highest quality with the finest craftsmanship of ovens for dealing with bodies.

Second was more aimed at those screaming about Dresden. That they expect us, ie the West, to abide by 19th century rules of warfare while studiously ignoring the German crimes of fire bombing Rotterdam and Coventry.

70 Quote 1 should note that the native populations are entirely passive in this like lambs to the slaughter.

“We might shake our head, we might let out a sigh, we might even get angry for a minute or two. And then we go on with our lives. We offer the family thoughts and prayers, but nothing ever changes. Ladies and gentleman, what does that say about us?”

It is worth watching; it’s under thirteen minutes.

What I’d really like to see is the college or university that gets the funds from the student loan has to guarantee the loan. If the student stops paying, the school has to pony up the remainder.

I bet we’d see a lot of degree programs get shrunk or canceled, because of the risk of default to the school from the graduates getting jobs asking “Would you like fries with that?” Well, at least until those are automated into oblivion….

Her mistake was thinking that this would prove that she was a Tuff Grrrl Boss who could Do Hard Things just like a Man, without realizing that every man knows that there are hard, unpleasant things that have to be done, and also that when you have to do them you shut up about it and keep it to yourself. Democrats (and Trump, sorry) seem to understand inherently that politics is about feels and you get to the feels with mental imagery. Which is why every news story and lie paints a very specific picture. Remember Trump violently "lunging" and grabbing the steering wheel from the hapless working class driver? A focus grouped mental image.

Noem gifted Democrats with a picture that typically fucks Republicans in an election year. People don't make the leap to "doing hard thing" they just see Heartless Stepford Wife Puppy Killer, which just happens to be the picture Democrats are constantly trying to paint of us. Thanks Krispi.

191 RAF and USAAF pilots were given credit for shooting down V-1 Buzz Bombs.

With their pulse jet engines the V-1s were very fast. So the tactic was to put the fighter in a dive, anything from a Spitfire to a P-61, to gain overtake. Then either shoot the V-1 down with gunfire, one P-61 got scorched in the follow up explosion from such an action. Or they would put a wing tip under a V-1 wing tip and tip the buzz bomb over due to upsetting the gyroscope.

You're making an interesting point. Serious question: As POTUS, was Trump really as boorish and mean as the press made him out to be? You can point to his comments about Fiorina during the primaries, perhaps, but was there really - really - anything he said as POTUS that says to you 'this guy is too much of a bully to be President'? I'd say that 99.9% of those stories were media embellishments and editorializations of out-of-context Twitter comments, at best.

All anyone, including a number on our side, has to do is watch one of Trump's live roundtables he did as president. No matter the subject, even his "opponents" who sat at those tables all came away with the same impression. That he listened, understood, and provided novel solutions.

No president in memory has ever done anything even resembling those roundtables. Not off the cuff and without a script like Trump did. Absolutely remarkable. I don't think anyone could watch him at those with a remotely open mind and come away with the caricature impression of Trump, whether on intellect, articulation or temperament. Big big problem is the 100th was assigned to the 8th AF in England. The fighters of the Tuskegee Airmen were assigned to the 15th AF in Italy.

The only time the 100th might have crossed paths with them was during one Operation Frantic mission after D-Day that also resulted in the most successful attack by the Luftwaffe against the 8th AF when German bombers struck the Russian airfield at Poltava destroying B-17s and P-51s in a night time attack.

307 I was soaking up some sun puddles after a cold night, at a favorite camping site overlook along the Colorado. Been camping there for years, when I get a chance.

Like I’ve seen many times before, a butterfly swung by and then landed and was doing the same thing - soaking up some rays for a few minutes. But this time, it just seemed different.

I got to wondering. How long does a Butterfly live? Can’t be more than a few months, and that’s if they are lucky. How short is a summer day, when you only get one summer?

It’s hard to explain, but for some reason it made me feel almost guilty for being human, and living for decades. Or at least regret at squandering all those hours in my life. What would it be like to live such a compressed time frame, or would this be moot.

I have never run into this issue. The TP sold in stores here in AZ does not bear any "septic safe" logos that I have ever noticed. It's all cellulose pulp. I thought the "septic safe" designation was reference to lack of scent or anti-bacterial additives.

My Alberta house is on septic, and I have never used any special TP with it.

He shits outside the litter too often, and unlike the other cats, doesn't like to bury his turds when he does shit inside the litter.
He'll scratch you if you pick him up.

376 I got to wondering.

Posted by: Common Tater

First, that's some good weed you got.

Second, probably the best anime series of the past year was Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. It's your thought, from the other direction.

A Tolkienesque world: Humans have normal lifespans, Dwarves live a few hundred years, and Elves are functionally immortal. A team of two humans, one dwarf, and one elf have just saved the world from the demon lord. The heroics are already in the past, so the story is about how Frieren, the elf, deals with the butterfly-like lives around her.

A literal translation of the Japanese title, Sousou no Frieren, would be "Frieren attends a funeral." ...../spoilers.

Unfortunately, I couldn't randomize the quote, so I'd go in each day, and update it with a new one.

402 Once upon a time I purchased a particular breed of dog to be used for hunting. I did my research and I bought a puppy from a respected breeder. Of course the Murphy's have nothing over my surname. I took this wild and belligerent dog to a nationally known trainer for a month. After two weeks I received a call telling me I should come pick up my dog and that I probably should put it down.

I bought a Labrador that came out of well respected bloodlines. I got the "worst" dog in the litter because I wasn't deemed good dog worthy. Turned out she was hunting/field trial pick of the litter. After spending time around the competitive field trail people I pulled out of that because of the brutality they visited on their dogs. After that MollyDog and I had many great adventures hunting grouse around the western US and more than a few lovely nights snuggled up to each before a fire snacking on that day's grouse together. She never mentioned if she missed the competitive trials and I never asked. I think we were both far better with off with how things worked out.

The House Boy went around to wake up guys according to a schedule they posted outside the room..

Slept okay Sunday night, but only five hours last night. The cold is still hanging on and I'm still coughing more than I should be after a week. But if I'm still coughing like a gassed WWI soldier (okay, I exaggerate . . . but not by much), it may not be a good idea.

I think I'm gonna pack it in too. I've got my barometer on the new weather station's relative (altimeter) pressure setting calibrated pretty well, I think. It was tracking well with the local airports all day. I'm gonna call that good.

I noticed nobody much bothers with that with the local weather stations around here. Some don't even bother, and some just use some willy nilly value without bothering to check.

For that reason, never pay any attention to a given value of a local barometer's relative pressure. Just look at the changes. The changes track well with reference airports.

481 Miss Linda and I actually discussed my retirement last night. She was the one who, last November, said I should finish out the semester and retire in May. Now, as we're looking at May, she thinks I should wait until after the Nov. election. She cites "trouble with the sea routes" and the strong possibility that prices on everything are going to spike still higher. (I wish she'd told me this before I signed up for Medicare Part B.)

She does not get that I am depressed and enraged by turns living here, that I feel I'm being ground down little by little every day and that soon I will have nothing left (and I said that, in those words), and that if my health does take a serious turn for the worse, I won't be able to enjoy what retirement I will be able to take.

I've got to tell my boss soon if I am going to leave at the end of May. Thoughts?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 30, 2024 03:03 AM (omVj0)

483 There is also the issue that my office may move this year to a point a good quarter mile or more from its current near-the-street location. I'll have to walk it in bad weather as well as good. Or pay $600 a year for a parking permit.

And guess who'll have to organize the move? Part of the reason I want out now is to avoid that.

Posted by: JQ at April 30, 2024 03:41 AM (njWTi)

501 The economy and the election thing: Even if Trump does win and manages to take office, his policies won't make an instant turnaround for the economy. It takes time. Yes, there will be a new optimism in the business world -- but it's not as though on Nov. 6 eggs will suddenly become .85/doz. and gas will drop to $2.25/gal.

And if FJB and his handlers cheat their way in again, things will only get worse. On that, there will be little delay.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 30, 2024 03:42 AM (omVj0)

502 Wolfus, it is a tough choice--but if your job breaks your health, any economic advantage to be gained by keeping the job will be swallowed up in medical bills, regardless of the poisoned fruit of Bidenomics. Better to retire by choice now than to wait until it's a medical necessity.

It has been my experience that when stepping off into thin air one finds that the air is stiffer than you realize. If your finances, including taking social security at this point, are viable today, I would ask yourself how much more viable are they going to be a year from now? I can't answer that question nor should I even begin to go down that rabbit hole. The other issue to consider is time itself. You're never going to have more; all things being equal financially the question is how do you wish to spend your time? I still think he answered your own question and sometimes it's no more complicated than that.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 30, 2024 03:25 AM (omVj0)

There's nothing illogical about house prices falling, but it does depend on the area. Research your zip code(s) well (where you're selling and where you're buying).

The idea of making money while you can is of course valid, but your comment about being worn down until there's nothing left is scary to me, which is why I vote for retiring (knowing absolutely nothing about your economic readiness).

Part of me luxuriates in the luxury of normalcy, because I don't know how much longer it will last.

510 Miley, I've been living in the same apartment for 22 years, so there will be no selling. But part of what I like about S. Indiana, for instance, is that there *are* affordable small houses. Realtor.com has been a godsend.

You write, ". . . your comment about being worn down until there's nothing left is scary to me, which is why I vote for retiring (knowing absolutely nothing about your economic readiness)."

My SS and pension look very good, and I have enough savings that I can possibly spend 1/3 of my capital on the down payment, closing costs, and improvements or small repairs on the new place. And my vacation hours bank, as I said, would fund a lot of the relocation costs.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 30, 2024 03:54 AM (omVj0)

513 It's been 8 years since I pulled the pin on retirement. At that time I was still short a few years from Medicare so I had to fund my own insurance or not fund it which was more the case and pray I didn't get sick. Additionally, all I had was a general idea of of what had to happen for me to be financially successful long-term. With that plan in mind I went and made it work. Sometimes you sort things out as you go along. What I did know for certain is I was done and I wanted to move on to a different phase of my life and I did. Looking back, I think I had 30% of a plan and 70% wing it; other life experiences taught me that sometimes stepping off a cliff into thin air is exactly the right choice. Could everything I set out to accomplish have gone off the rails and ended in a disaster? Yes it could have but it didn't and that right there for me was the rub. Sometimes you have to make your own luck.

Again, you've answered your own question.

522 In the meantime, and much less heavy: The cats are doing well. Big silky black Stirling has taken to hopping on my lap in the afternoon or evening and dozing for quite a while in my arms. Little "I'm a purebred Siberian, you know!" Dagny is friendly and appreciates petting, including belly rubs, but is not a lap cat.

I was holding her in my arms at the screen door yesterday so she could look out at birds at a higher level, and I was amazed at how well-proportioned her head and ears are. A little thing, but it struck me.

New Orleans, which I call Da Swamp. I've lived here most of my life with a couple of years elsewhere, and I've disliked the place for a long time.

As different as possible would be Arizona, but the Californians have driven up the prices there already, along with much of the West.

525 Wolfus, I am "retired" now, but not on SS... not old enough! But soon, I will be.

I quit my job to take care of hubby. Maybe not the best idea, but was about to get terminated for being gone so long. Used up all fmla. Used up all pto. Took 6 months unpaid loa... thinking hubby would pass away, then I would go back to work.

Nope. Hubby lives! Yay! But now no job. He gets SS and it's not quite enough to get by. I've sold my property & we'd been supplementing with the proceeds. We each have modest 401ks.

Not the Golden Years we had envisioned, way back when, but now we're getting by!

526 I think you should move to Floyds Knobs, Wolfus. Because it makes a great return address.

No, Greenville. Greenville is very good.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 30, 2024 04:23 AM (omVj0)

537 Wofus, the idea behind stepping off into thin air is you have to have the courage to just make a decision sometimes. This doesn't mean you act rash and without consideration of the potential outcomes. That approach most often leads to unsatisfactory outcomes. On the other hand, we cannot have perfect knowledge of what's going to happen in the future and coming to terms with that is liberating, sometimes you just say to yourself. I've done my homework, there's nothing more to figure out, and then you leap off a cliff and go see what happens. Generally it's going to work out is my experience and what doesn't you'll work around it. It might not be perfect, it might not be optimal, but it's going to be a hell of a lot closer to your life goals than what you're doing right now.

I'm the least qualified to give advice on retirement as I wanted to retire a bit ago but I'm still working about 10 hrs a week at a job I've had for 35 yrs, as of Apr 15. From what I remember you posting I think you're maybe a bit younger than me, I'm 68.

Just do what seems right to you. My Jules has wanted me to quit completely but I'm happy w/ the way it is now. Sure it sounds like Miss Linda has an opinion that you might consider but the choice is yours.

Too many unknown variables involved to give advice. But something I read a while ago has since stuck in my mind.

Your employer is buying your life, your time on earth.

Es gibt mehr von uns, als Sie denken.....(sinister chuckle). And some of us know...Dialects...as well as Hochdeutsch! (musical sting, followed by more sinister chuckling)

Let me introduce you to a little gem called Swabian. (Tie him down and use the eyelid extenders - yes, like in Clockwork Orange -mein Gott, Klaus) And then we'll try a treat called Kölsch, spoken by roughly 250,000 people inside of Cologne, or Köln, as it's known locally. We'll fortify you with some Ebbelwein from Franfurt am Main where you'll have the chance to pick up Hessische.

And there are so many, many more... (sinister chuckle echoes in the surrounding, terrifying darkness. "It's all a matter of Kultur, mein Freund. Kultur!" Lightning splits the evening sky as the dialects...continue....

544 LiS, yes, I'm prepared to work part-time if I must to make ends meet. I wanted to do some online editing, but I'm not seeing many nibbles on the job applications I've put out there. If I have to work at a retail place, like a bookstore, that'd be better than the long days I put in now.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius,

The post retirement scuffle job is as much about the job as it is about getting to talk to people. One benchmark I use in evaluating my life right now is that once I went into this retirement mode, my entire life turned into a big goddamn Mulligan where I've been able to redefine myself and do whatever I want. Wolfis I understand your trials and tribulations but man I'm telling you there's a great happiness out there waiting for you.

Not forgetting Berlinsch!

Accents are funny, too. Some Germans can immediately spot kids who first learned German at Baylor because they were taught by a prof from Scotland and thus speak German with a Scottish accent. (The flip side of that is that I kept making my Old English professor crack up because I speak OE with a German accent.)

554 About the resumes: it just goes to show you CANNOT say the word “job” anymore, even though you CANNOT have a “career” without first having a “job”.

Note that just about every place to apply for a job is called “careers”, because people simply don’t want to acknowledge the difference.
