I found the only road one can make up time going at or below the speed limit is the Schuylkill Expressway, I think it assumes it's a traffic mess.

As for that trip down the Gallatin Canyon south of Bozeman, you really don't want to go much over the speed limit, as there are lots of blind sharp curves, deer, elk, NPS speedtraps, and road-blocking RVs. Waze tells us we'll be there in 13.5 hours, so 6:30 pm our time, 7:30 pm, mountain time. We got there at 6:45 pm, mountain time. I beat Waze by 45 minutes...it was the proudest moment of my life. I think it helps a lot to figure out your "speed of advance."
I've done this when it's just me on a road trip and it helps for planning purposes. I make note of the time and the odometer when I pull out of my driveway and then do the same at the end of the day when I pull into, say the hotel parking lot (or whatever the destination is for that day's travel.) Then divide elapsed time by miles and that's Speed Of Advance and it accounts for all the various stops along the way. I've pretty much concluded that my SOA for a road trip is 50 mph. So if the map software tells me it's 200 miles, it will be a four hour trip. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at April 28, 2024 02:22 PM (dg+HA) 82

Posted by: deepelemblues at April 28, 2024 02:18 PM (z9n5F) The Interstates are posted at 75 or 80 mph, mostly, out there. In the before times I was driving to my sister place and asked what the speed limit was and she said as long as I wasn't driving recklessly a 'speeding ticket' was listed as wasting fuel and I'd better have a stack of 10s with me as if I didn't I'd get taken to jail.
Drove up and arrived at night and found out that the 'no speed limit' was only for daylight hours. Dodged a bullet that time. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at April 28, 2024 02:26 PM (48HU+) 99

It applied more to the non-Interstates, made the Feds happy, or at least they didn't annoy Wyoming about enforcing the 55 limit. It also meant you could drive about 75 instead of 55 on non-Interstate highways and not worry if you did get pulled over.

Pro-tip for those wanting to save some time (I've made the Bozeman to Billings trip over a thousand times):
Don't stop in Billings just to get gas and/or a meal. Stop in Columbus (just west of Billings) and get gas and McDonald's hamburgers at the Town Pump. This will save you an hour's worth of time since any stop in Billings will automatically result in an hour of traveling time. Of course, the drawback is that you'll have to settle for MickyD's hamburgers, but it's what my family has always done for the past 20-30 years. Google seems to be doing a poor job giving timely info. about road conditions - accidents, paving/infrastructure, detours - since C19. (Getting accident info. once past the accident area; reports of 'slow traffic' & asked to pick another route when there's no problem on the highway; not detecting miles of construction until driving through; odd rerouting requests, etc.) Bought & installed a new mapping card but it's proving to be no more efficient than the original from several years ago.
Google was used to track out-of-area & in-state driving during C19 so why would it be now be less efficient for personal use, I've wondered. /R Posted by: L - If they do it with you, they'll do it to you, too at April 28, 2024 02:45 PM (NFX2v) 151

Google and really, all computer maps use the vaguest (pale) colors with little contrast and the smallest font size possible. Scroll in on the map and the text gets no larger. Why?
Posted by: Braenyard at April 28, 2024 02:12 PM (lCWOD) Because the text on a digital map is designed to be read at a certain size and appear no matter how much or where you zoom. Fixed text would mean you could only zoom to the part of the map where the text is. Note how the text appears on each street regardless of where on the street you zoom. Back in the day (68 Firebird with 327 Corvette engine) I did a lot of trips from Colorado to central Illinois. I figured 50 miles covered for each hour, over the duration of the trip. With gas stops, pee breaks, traffic, etc., it usually came out pretty close.
Generally stayed pretty close to the speed limits, usually. Posted by: boynsea at April 28, 2024 02:52 PM (cx155) 169

AP, 04/28/24, Education: 'College protesters want ‘amnesty.’ At stake: Tuition, legal charges, grades and graduation'
In part, "But the next evening, the college junior received an email from the university. Alwan and other students were being suspended after their arrests at the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” a tactic colleges across the country have deployed to calm growing campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war. The students’ plight has become a central part of protests, with students and a growing number of faculty demanding their amnesty. At issue is whether universities and law enforcement will clear the charges and withhold other consequences, or whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives." ___ But it was fine to riot & cause graduations to be cancelled for other students - often those who already missed their high school graduation due to C19 - but no action against rioting Gaza Solidarity. For starters, ALL involved who are on Temporary Protected Status - professors, students, campus intruders - need to be put out of the country immediately & kept out. Period. One and done. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 28, 2024 03:38 PM (MoZTd) I pretty much ignore any GPS advice that takes me off the interstate. I've found that the GPS is liable to lead you through small towns loaded with traffic lights if that map shows even the tiniest one mile or so difference in length, even if it takes you an extra 2 hours to get where you're going. I'd do Devil's Tower, but take that grey route that swings easterly towards the bright blue marked highway. That hop up and over is quite scenic.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia Indeed. But for WCVB5ABC today, 'Students involved in pro-Palestinian protests won't face school discipline, Emerson College says' In part, "The College will not bring any campus disciplinary charges against the protesters and will encourage the district attorney not to pursue charges related to encampment violations," the college said in a statement. The protesters' arraignment dates have been set for May 2. 3 and 7. Emerson's student housing ends on May 3. "We will also provide housing support to students required to stay in town for court appearances following the closing of their dorms," the college said." Ridiculous. Once (once) I found the GPS re-route feature useful. Wreck on the interstate with fatality... southbound lanes all closed. I'm right next to an interchange, but just past the exit... but not the entrance.
So I pull over to the shoulder and make an illegal U-turn, going the wrong way just until I can get onto the exit ramp to another road. Drive for a bit and the system quits bitching and does a re-route. Correctly. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 28, 2024 03:55 PM (Q4IgG) 242
More specifically, I'm thinking of WY 14/24 past the Devil's Tower and through Hulett and Aladdin.
On the topic of speeding tickets, my dad got one of those $5 specials back in 1979 not far from Yellowstone. Cop's lights come on, my dad starts cursing that he's screwed and then the cop hands him a ticket for 75 in a 55. $5 for "wasting national resources". Mississippi rest areas are filthy. California rest areas are goddamn frightening. __________ Heh. Try the ones in Louisiana. If you don't see a LOT of cars and trucks in the parking bays when you pull in, keep on a-rollin' ... the restrooms are 'target-rich environments' for the Predator class. I have yet to see armed security in any of them. I wouldn't let my daughter go in them on road trips unless I went in with her to stand guard. Any questions, well ... talk to the hand. I was just remarking to my son last night that I see that not as an estimate of travel time, but as the “time to beat.”
Go through Riverton, to the south. Teapot Rock, of Teapot Dome fame is not far from the route of travel, and you get the benefit of driving through the Tetons along the way, as well as right past Old Faithful, which is 100% worth a stop. Yes, Casper to Shoshone, Riverton, Debois, Togabee pass down into the Yellowstone River valley. Driving west with the Tetons looming right in front. Bear right at the intersection to Grand Teton Park through Grand Teton Park into Yellowstone.
