The following is a fun and safe link. Trust me. Would I pull a Yoko on you?

I do not own a pair of crocs. But, I will admit to owning Fleetwood Mac's LP Rumors. It seems I'm not the only one.

How Fleetwood Mac Got Cool Again
Why do young people keep rediscovering Rumours? It’s in part because of a song that’s not even on the album.

Catchy music. Great vocals, lyrics people can relate to are only a couple of thoughts.

Do you enjoy the great outdoors? Do you enjoy hiking? Have some travel planned? The Best Hike in Every State

Alpine scrambles and beachfront strolls; multi-day singletrack adventures and quick urban escapes; soaring trees and rolling sand dunes—every state in the country has something to offer intrepid hikers. So we rounded up a bucket-list-worthy, best-of-the-best guide.

Isn't social media just grand? Ads for Explicit ‘AI Girlfriends’ Are Swarming Facebook and Instagram

WIRED found thousands of ads running on Meta’s social platforms promoting sexually explicit “AI girlfriend” apps. Some human sex workers say the platform unfairly polices their own posts more harshly.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Brussels Sprouts Emporium

Mis Hum:
I am saddened to report that Alex Hassilev, the last original member of the 1960s folk music group The Limeliters, passed away yesterday (4/21/24) at age 91. The Limeliters burst upon the music scene in the early 60s with their mix of harmony, comedy, and international music. The lead singer was tenor Glenn Yarbrough, and Lou Gottlieb provided a lot of the jokes. Their "Through Children's Eyes" album is a classic. Alex Hassilev was fluent in many languages and helped provide that flair to the repertoire. - Isophorone Blog

I'm not saying the next story involves a Genius Award or not. That being said, going into feed wild bears with food is certainly an invitation for mayhem.

ZOO HORROR Shocking moment zookeeper is pinned down by two pandas who chase her down inside enclosure during feeding time
Another zookeeper tried to help but the situation only worsened

*****

The disguise in this story wouldn't pass as a Halloween costume. Genius Award Winner.

In addition to his mugshot, the Glades County Sheriff's Office also released a photo of the man as he was arrested -- showing his failed attempt at going incognito.
The photo above is what Joshua Kolotka looked like when he posed for his mugshot in Lakeport, Florida -- but it sure wasn't how he appeared when he was apprehended by police.

In a release from the Glades County Sheriff's Office, authorities claimed Kolotka tried his best to evade deputies by going incognito, wearing a wig and dress to avoid arrest.

It didn't work.

The internet was better in a lot of ways before they tarded it out.

Google search was an almost magical experience up until the 2000s. First they eliminated the most visited, popular websites that was most relevant for the search in favor of “pay $$$ to get your site on the first page”

Then they started actively scrubbing results that don’t Comport with the Narrative. All you get now, is 50 pages of advertisements, and a bunny with a pancake on its head.

114 Mint is FANTASTIC for making Juleps. That may be about all its good for, but that’s enough.

Make a simple syrup with cane sugar. Muddle fresh mint leaves in crushed ice, and pour a decent Bourbon, and syrup over same. A sterling cup is traditional, because silver is the best conductor of heat. It makes for an interesting drink, and refreshing on hot, humid days.

116 70 -- Hi NaCly!

Yeah, interesting story. I was in the hospital for throwing up blood. (Turned out to be simply a bad irritation of my esophagus, so don't worry.) I was laying there in recovery, and I was just a couple minutes from being returned to my room when the alarm was sounded in the hospital. It was very frustrating: just a couple minutes short of one alarm, they'd come back with a other. I think I was trapped down there for nearly two hours.

My youngest son was supposed to get married. The site canceled. That was the second time the wedding has been postponed. My oldest niece had flown out from New Jersey. According to his twin, his last words were something like "Fuck it! I'm gonna go and get drunk."

All the Sabine were lucky. We all live east of the worst of it. Daughter has to replace roof, but that was just hail. It stayed mostly in far west Omaha. The little towns out in that general area got hammered. Entire blocks of home in splinters. Very few injuries and no deaths, thankfully.

Thumb tip and occassionally the areas between those three digits get the tinglies. 152 Much discussion of Apocalypse Now in the thread below - two things not mentioned that might be of note:

1. John Milius wanted George Lucas to direct from his script, and was seemingly on board with Lucas's plan to film it as a "black comedy."

2. Milius and others involved with casting very much wanted Steve McQueen to play the part of Willard, but leaving the US for an extended time led him to turn it down. McQueen, though, pushed Clint Eastwood to play Willard, and offered to play Kurtz because it would be a briefer shoot for him.

Much debate over who would have been better than Brando for Kurtz. If you're going by the standard of "having your lines fed to you over an earpiece," then pretty much anyone, obviously, but I still wonder who would have nailed it. Robert Shaw, John Cassavetes, were among those proposed, but I still don't know.

It may sound bizarre, but I'd kinda favor William Holden - he could have brought that West Point ring-on-the-finger rising star gone rogue aspect to the role. He had the sort of natural charisma that would make it believable that he could draw others to his ultimately insane cause. He also could do a complex villain quite well.

179 Second choice for AN Colonel Kurtz:

Burt Lancaster - he would chew the scenery, but check him out in Seven Days in May and you can see the makings of a Kurtz there. The age factor would be a problem, but if they could shoot around Brando's rotundity and near-immobility, they could probably handle that too.

Possible third - Charlton Heston. Yes, I know all the problems, but think of the subversive effect. Remember his take on Taylor in Planet of the Apes - how far from that would Kurtz really have to be? (And don't forget that it's Taylor who - is it accidental? - activates the Alpha and Omega Nuke in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Remember the line in Conrad's novella, "Exterminate the Brutes.

You were right the other night about my compressor motor. Bad start capacitor. I "Zabel Degugged" as a shorted run capacitor. Nope.

This start cap is 189-227 uF, 250V (why they list electrolytic start caps with a range like this, I don't know. Run caps are a given value with a tolerance percentage).

Took both cap houses off the motor and took them out. My Fluke said the start cap was 1.4 uF. On resistance, it showed high resistance, 600 kOhm-ish, but it didn't behave right, you know, value increasing as the cap charged up. Just sort of bounced around.

Evidence of electrolyte leakage as well. Not too bad, but a little around the seam on the end.

Run cap was 15 uF (+/- 6%). It read 13.1 uF, which was out of tolerance, so I replaced it as well.

Motor starts right up and runs nicely. I got two of each of the caps, so I'll have a set if the other motor, exact same model, goes out.

I was looking at the specs on these bipolar electrolytic start caps. Lifetimes are in the 30 hour range. Duty cycle is less than 5%.

Now, they're in circuit normally for less than a second each start cycle, of course, so 30 hours should be many start cycles over years. But the duty cycle is a killer. Not too good for rapid start/stop cycling.

Yes, capacitors for a single-phase 3HP motor. 240V single phase.

The purpose of the caps are to induce a phase shift of the current in an auxiliary start winding. This motor is a "CSCR", for capacitor start, capacitor run. Here the start winding is in circuit all the time. The other capacitor type motor is the "CSIR", cap start, induction run. THe start winding is only energized during start.

The third type is the "PSC" type, permanent split capacitor. You have a "run" capacitor only. They are used for every low starting torque, low HP motors, such as fan motors on HVAC stuff.

224 Run capacitors are interesting.

The HVAC motor for the central air started making protest noises during an exceptionally extended cold period. I was ready to replace it, and even had its replacement on hand - when I realized it wasn’t a “sealed for life” bearing unit, but had oiler points on both ends of the motor shaft. Just little plugs that needed to be removed, and oil, naturally.

Saved me several hundred bucks, at least. Anyway, I was reading the manual for the new motor - run capacitor values will affect the efficiency or electricity consumption to some degree.

The run capacitor should be specifically “sized” for the application - just about any size can be made to work, but fine-tuning the value means cooler running and longer life.

Another motor “gotcha” for residential ho-moaners, outside air conditioner units have a switch, called a “contactor” if I remember right. You can often hear it click when switching from heating to cooling on the thermostat. Well for some reason, bugs like to crawl in there sometimes, and make a nest or whatever, disabling the switch.

Outside compressor units like fresh capacitors, fan motors, and contactors. 1994 Trane !

Those three digits are innervated by the radial nerve, while the ring and pinky fingers are innervated by the ulnar nerve. True enough, but that came from the Hickenlooper "making-of" documentary. A few other gems from that:

Lucas at one point wanted to do the film in Vietnam itself, then shifted to favor it pseudo-documentary style in Stockton using black and white film.

One of the props guys decided on his own to bring in cadavers, planning to use them to decorate Kurtz's Hell-scape hq. Coppola freaked out, and even more so when he found out that the "medical examiner" who supplied the corpses was actually a grave-robber.

Method Acting - Dennis Hopper had trouble on set early on, and when Coppola asked, "What can get you through this," Hopper said, "About an ounce of cocaine," and that became part of the regular film budget from then onwards..

I suffer from ganglion cysts, they are fluid cysts on tendons that swell and can cause problems. My most recent one is on the back side tendon on my middle finger, which wasn't a problem besides it impinged on the nerve on a pressure point, especially when I tried to grab something like you described. It was quite painful for a while, and if I knead it too much it starts hurting again.

I've got one of those. I've found that debris from surrounding trees can get into and jam up the rain gauge fairly easily. Also, if you've got the optional lightning detector it probably doesn't work for shit. The one I've got has detected exactly one lightning event, and that was almost directly overhead.

But overall it's done it's job for the last three and a half years or so.

Re fine tuning or sizing in general a run capacitor. I've known people who've modified CSIR motors with an external run capacitor to improve efficiency and power factor. You've got to be careful. Some will work fine, but in some, the start winding just can't stand continuous current at all without overheating.

Run capacitors over the typical single phase HP range run from about 2 to 70 uF.

What you do is start small, the gradually increase the capacitance until you hit the sweet spot, which will show up as minimum running current for the given load (note you'll be tuning this for the load the motor is actually pulling, not its rated load).

If you get too big, the current will start to increase again. You want to keep it on the low side of that point.

303 I've seen one Tornado in my lifetime and that was enough. Pennsylvania has had one EF5 Tornado in its recorded weather history. I think I saw the tail end of that one in 5/31/1985. There were several in Mercer County that day so I may have seen one of them. That was the Tornado outbreak that has not, thankfully, repeated itself, in 1985. 30-40 tornadoes hit Western NY, PA, Eastern Ohio, and Ontario. That part of the country does not get Oklahoma size tornadoes. One of them stayed on the ground for 60+ miles and it was in the middle of the state. Just forests and mountains out there.

305 >> I recognized the symptoms as making it a strong possibility.

I looked up the typical performance curves for single phase motors, and that tells the story. Google, back in the early days when it was actually good and useful, would find something like this immediately. Now, you just get garbage.

Luckily, I had those charts in a book.

Anyway, if you look a the torque vs speed curve, which nicely includes the curves for run capacitor only, the starting torque is maybe 10 -15% of full load torque. That explains the sitting there and humming and blowing. Without the load, it would've likely started, relatively slowly, but with the compressor attached and unloader closed it couldn't budge.

This one has a coil spring "filter" in the rain funnel. That's supposed to keep debris from clogging the funnel hole and dropping in the tipping bucket, but even debris that is caught by that can pile up and limit flow.

The manual says clean it every so often. Well, check it regularly and see.

Weird thing about tornadoes - meteorologists still can't agree on how one should be defined scientifically. I've never quite understood what the sticking point is with the scientists, but jeez are they terrifying.

Mississippi has its share of them, not nearly as bad as our neighbor, Alabama, where they've experienced heart-rending disasters. Almost everyone I knew growing up had a tornado-related story to tell - my parents, for example, were living in their second home when I was born, because a tornado demolished most of their first one. They somehow survived hiding under a bed. Their dog was whisked away, but came back a few days later without any visible scratches.

Did Fleetwood Mac have any obscure, non-air-play tracks, in which they actually DID lay down any tunes to which you'd groove?

I think that many bands had exactly such songs in their books, those that the D.J.s or Program Managers didn't "grok", but were tracks that resonated with other musicians, critical listeners and such.

I just don't know the Fleetwood Mac music catalog well enough to discern their mix, from the bad to the good, or anything in between.

Certainly. The (current) pinnacle of that form, is Disturbed's "Sounds of Silence". I'd say that it was Sublime, but that's a different band, altogether.

Conversely. REO Speedwagon USED to Rock. The concert version of "Roll With The Changes" is as Rock as it Gets.

And then, (like Chicago), they started to play ballads. Chick music.

At least Chicago can blame it on the death of Terry Kath, and the ensuing Peter Cetera coup.

337 More tornado-related trivia from my limited experience - the two scariest I only witnessed, one at a distance. The first, driving up into the hills of Northeast Mississippi from the Delta, never even saw the funnel. We were at an elevation just high enough to see the cloud and the base of the funnel. It was miles (probably twenty or so) away and shrouded by trees, but the *color*. That unnatural, almost obscene blackness, with the area around it (again, at a distance) a sickly green that by right shouldn't exist. It was ... Lovecraftian, almost.

The other, outside my present home that rests right before the drop-off to the Delta. Only a partly cloudy day, no rain, and sunshine. We live atop a gently sloping hillside that gradually drops down dramatically before rising up into a ginormous hill. Out on the back deck, idling away time and thinking of when the lawn would need to be mowed again, when I noticed a small whirling disturbance in the dust moving up the slope at an angle away from our house and to the rear of our neighbors. It keeps coming, and there's a gradual pick-up in the wind, but no debris and nothing happens until 1/

Posted by: runner

Arabs call tea "chai". Fuck them, it's tea.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

"Te" or "cha" are the Chinese pronunciations, where the plant originated. Different dialects. Min: te. Cantonese and Mandarin: cha.

As a westerner, if you got your tea by ocean trade, you probably called it something based on "te." If you got it by the Silk Road, you probably called it something based on "cha." Because those were the Chinese people you were dealing with.

Both "tea" and "chai" are corruptions of the Chinese words, so calling either its "proper" name seems improper.

Today, Min is only spoken by about 70 million of the billion Chinese, so "cha" is probably the most proper name for it? That's also the Korean and Japanese pronunciation.

But I don't see a reason to make English speakers use a word other than "tea." That's what we call it.

Posted by: mikeski at April 28, 2024 01:36 AM (DgGvY)

352 ...it intersects with out neighbor's well-built shed and picks it up, crumples and disassembles it. There's not much of a disturbance noise or impact-wise. The small bit of the debris is the only thing making the funnel visible, and that only slightly. There's a bit of a gust that sets the branches of the neighbor's oak tree swaying, and then, it disperses.

Second one probably an over-powered dust devil, right? I'd think maybe so, but I've seen dust devils all my life and none of them had the velocity to pick up and destroy a solidly-constructed building and casually wad it up and tear it apart. I wonder if I saw a EF1 or smaller tornado in the process of forming that somehow lost its cohesion and dissipated.

Equally weird, my Great-Uncle Samps (on my mom's side of the family - he was named Samson but nobody, not even him, used that name) was wandering home on foot after an extended bout of drinking. (No mean feat in a Dry-County). A tornado that was probably an EF3 or EF4 struck the community he was just leaving and he found himself in its path. (That tornado, by the way, destroyed such a significant part of the small NE MS town that it lost its bid to become 2/

356 Wind/tornado talk. Had an interesting one last week. Had a 40FT high cube shipping container blow over. Weighs about 8500lbs. Sitting on the ground, not stacked. I've seen 'em go off a 3 and 4 high stack but never a single on the ground. Wind out of the east also, which was odd. Must have been the alien version of cow tipping.

357 I was in St. Louis visiting family during Tornado weather. I remember how eerie it felt: the sky darkened, everything went quiet, and it felt like there was a weight in the air. We left, and no more than a few minutes later, a tornado touched down in that area.

360 the county seat.) One moment he's walking, or more accurately, staggering, the next, a considerable time later, he's opening his eyes in a ditch along the gravel road and wondering how he got there. The way Uncle Samps told it, he wasn't aware of the tornado, just that it was rainy and a little stormy. It had swept him up and carried him for several hundred yards before he fetched up in a ditch. The doctor that examined him said that what saved him (and left him with nothing more than bruises and scratches) was just how profoundly drunk he was. Samps had just involuntarily relaxed and went with the flow, and he simply tumbled until the funnel lost its grip on him. There's probably a moral to go with that last one, but I'll let you be the judge.

I hurt my hip some years back (technically, jammed by leg into the hip). I had taken a trip out-of-country with the family and had been running from one terminal to another hauling over 100lbs of luggage. The day before we were to go back home, the pain was so back I saw a local herbalist/chiropractor. She worked on it until it made a sickly cracking sound, and immediately felt much better. She then put this aweful smelling poultice on it and warned me not to was it off for 24 hours. So here, I'm flying back the US on a 12+hour international flight, wearing the stinky poultice. When we finally land, I'm exiting the plane, and wife says the stewardess said, "There's that smell again", to which a steward responded, "I told you it wasn't me!"

Jim - hilarious! At least Uncle Samps wasn't that kind of a drunk - he always struck me as a good-natured cornpone version of W.C. Fields. Definitely not a fighter, if you judge by the local draft board at the time. He duly reported, and was duly rejected. I've seen the document - "physicallly unsuited" and "profound vision problems." My Uncle Hoyt later explained to me that they felt they couldn't rely on him being sober long enough, and even then not being able to stand upright or even walk dependably in the right direction, or to actually see or hit what he was shooting at. If you're over 29, just picture a draft board evaluating a Southern-fried Foster Brooks.

379 The father of so much of today's paranormal obsessions, Charles Fort (seriously, look at his works - UFOs, cryprtids, unexplained disappearances, displays of psychic power - it's all there, culled from newspaper articles from all over the world and collected together, with much humorous commentary, back in the 1920s) theorized, that tornadoes, based on their behavior - demolishing a city block and leaving one house completely untouched, sweeping away cattle and heavy agricultural equipment but leaving nearby hay unmolested - were the manifestation of some sort of intelligence that felt the need to intervene in our lives from time to time as mysterious as the intelligence itself. He also believed that "we are property," grouped amongst the belongings of a higher Being or Beings who felt no more need to explain themselves to us than we do to the cattle, pigs, and chickens that we make use of.

See "CP Violation". This likely has something to do with the why only matter question. But no one has figured it out.

Imagine this. You switch everything to antimatter. Protons becomes antiprotons, with negative charge, and electrons become positrons with positive charge (that we call now). You have to flip other things as well.

Now, can you tell the difference? It used to be thought you couldn't, until CP violation was discovered.

Yep, you could tell if you were antimatter or matter. Although which you called which wouldn't matter.
