Gun Thread: End of April Edition!

042824 calendar scaled 2.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be the end of April Gun Thread? Next thing you know it will be the first Gun Thread of May! I am writing this earlier than my usual panicked last minute effort because someone whose initials are Weasel are heading to the farm-o on Thursday morning, and not returning home until sometime on Sunday. I'm having a second organic tree farming building constructed and need to finalize site preparations, and maybe get some shooting fundamentals practice accomplished too. Hear that? Shooting fundamentals practice.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

042824 homework scaled.jpg

Last week we had a homework assignment. Did you do the homework? Did you watch the short video and come to the thread tonight prepared to discuss your thoughts with the group? Completing homework comprises 35% of your Gun Thread grade, so please tell me you watched the video, because failure to complete assignments on time can result in an unfavorable note being placed into your permanent record. Below is the video.

The video is from an attorney in WA who gives the legal perspective on what you can and cannot do when your car is surrounded by a mob of peaceful protestors. Your assignment was to place yourself in the driver's situation and decide what you would have done a) without first watching lawyer-guy, and 2) what if anything you might have done differently after watching lawyer-guy.

There was also a Bonus Question: Do you know the relevant law(s) in your state? How does it differ from what was described in the video?

Rather unfortunately I think the likelihood of our seeing these situations again will only go up in the upcoming summer and fall months. I very truly believe it's a very good idea to think of these sort of scenarios, and what your reaction might be in advance. The best way to avoid a situation like this is to never get into the situation in the first place but that isn't always possible. Angry mobs can and do spring up spontaneously, and you might find yourself in the middle of one despite your best efforts otherwise.

I have one word for you all and that is situational awareness. I do not want to be overly melodramatic here, but your door locks and rolled-up windows are not going to always protect you, particularly from a determined attack. Be aware of problematic activity in your area and avoid it. Whenever you are out and about, be constantly aware of your current situation and constantly update your best avenue of escape using your own basis for threat assessments. Whenever that threat assessment goes up, use the route of escape by executing the escape plan as soon as possible. Picking up a pack of Camels and a Slim-Jim isn't worth becoming the subject of a mob's attention. The instant something seems wrong, un-ass the area as quickly as possible, and at all costs avoid what happened to the guy in the video who was boxed in with nowhere to go.

Now, on to the discussion. What do all y'all think?

2024 NoVAMoMe

042824 hello-moron scaled.jpg

04/28/24 Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to register for the event. Have you registered? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of registration?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated opening of 2024 NoVAMoMe registration is upon us! That's right, registration for the event of the season is open, which means you can register to attend! You see, in order to attend, you must first register, and then wait for June 8th, and then attend! It's really more of an application to attend based on whether we like you or not, but what have you got to lose?!

Q: Weasel, your world frightens and confuses us. How do we, how do you say, register for the NoVAMoMe?
A: Welp, it's pretty darn easy!

First, check your calendars for June 8th, 2024, and cancel anything already planned. Good so far? Then simply send an email to WeaselBell Productions expressing your interest, then sit back and anxiously wait for a reply. Our pal and most delightful 'ette and MoMe Hostess Extraordinaire bluebell will review your application and relevant permanent record notations to decide if you're NoVAMoMe material. If you're one of the chosen, you'll get a reply with a link and secret password to the registration site containing all the pertinent details. Look these over and complete the simple registration form, following the PayPal link provided at the end of the form to make your payment. The $30 pp fee covers appetizers, dinner (BBQ Chicken, hamburdogs, sides, and dessert) plus an unlimited amount of fun! Since we must guarantee a headcount to the caterer, all registrations must be made online by May 26th. We are not accepting payment for registration at the door. You do not need a PayPal account to register and can pay with any major credit card.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, once registered, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a confirmation email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email, go to the site with the password provided, fill out the simple form, and make your payment. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

Win a Dream Date with Weasel!
Due to popular demand, we are again conducting a separate raffle for a Dream Date with Weasel This fabulous prize includes an entire day of shooting and personalized one-on-one handgun & rifle coaching and instruction at Weasel Acres on a mutually agreeable date with yours truly. The lucky winner will be able to not only bring and shoot their own weapons, but also try out a variety of WeaselWeapons using WeaselAmmo!

We will end the day with dinner at a good Mexican place in nearby Appomattox. The winner will be responsible for their travel to and from Central Virginia, hence the separate drawing.

Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

Q: Weasel, anything else for 2024?
A: Why I'm glad you asked! There are in fact TWO things to mention for 2024.

First, we are again having a pre-party get-together the afternoon/evening before the main event. Details at the registration site.

Dos, we are again offering a NoVAMoMe commemorative mug for 2024 available only to NoVAMoMe participants!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and sign up!

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

Range Report
First up our pal Blake shares the details of a competition range trip!

042824 blake 1 Silhouette.Match.03.23.2024 scaled.jpg
There are targets out there somewhere!

Saturday, March 23, I made it to my second silhouette match. But, the day before, I hit the range to check the zero stop I'd recently set up on my scope and practice that which Weaselsan Gunsei mentioned the previous week: fundamentals. (zero stop was spot on)

The first couple of shots were just bad, on my part, then I finally got settled in and put three shots in two holes. After that, I lost it for a shot, put one just high and left, settled back in and put another shot touching the first three.

From there, I moved to some different ammo and put three shots in basically two holes, show in the upper left target. (the ammo is some custom ammo I purchased for use in our local 1,000 yard match. I think it passes muster)

Now, on to the silhouette match: I first shot this match 3 months ago or so and didn't do all that well, which is to be expected. The match consists of 5 half size silhouettes at 200. 300, 400 and 500 meters for a total of 20 possible points. These are not big targets. The turkeys at 200 meters, are maybe 6" tall x 4" wide. The rams, at 500 meters are 6" tall but a bit wider, maybe 10". And it's not enough to just hit a target. The target needs to be knocked completely off the rail they are standing on. One thing I did have in my favor was my range book. In the course of my first match I noted the appropriate MOA elevation adjustment for each distance, which turned out to be spot on. Anyway, after everything was said and done, I went 5 for 5 and 200 and 400 meters, 4 for 5 at 500 meters. Unfortunately, 300 meters had me for lunch and I only got 2 out of 5. Drat.

One thing which caught be off guard was my new bipod. It turns out it was a bit taller than the previous one I had and my rear bag couldn't make up the height enough to bring the muzzle down on to the target. Now, I could have adjusted by moving the legs on the bipod to the forward 45 degree angle, but, I decided against it because I've never used or practiced with that set up. Instead, I used my hand on the bag to get the rifle high enough to be on target. Which was another lesson learned and necessitates further practice trips to the range.

Darn.

This, people, is how you become a better shooter. Very nicely done Blake!

Cigar of the Week

LaGloria Cubana Classic scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores with this excellent review of the La Gloria Cubana Classic

The first thing you notice about this cigar is how hard it is to the touch, it felt almost like a cardboard tube. That always makes me wonder if it is going to be a difficult cigar to smoke, hard to draw and hard to keep lit. Not the case here. The Classic has an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder plus a Dominican/Nicaraguan filler. Their web site calls this a medium bodied cigar and I concur. I found it to be a pleasant smoke with a spicy start followed by flavors of chocolate and leather. The middle third provided a very smooth and relaxing tobacco flavor. The cedar finish is noteworthy and very pleasant. Cigar Aficionado gives it a very respectable 92 rating. I liked this cigar. Nothing fancy, nothing outrageous. Just a good peasant smoke and depending on where you shop, a reasonable value.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you very mucho!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

Will never visit NYC, DC, Shitcago or Philly again, ever. They are foreign lands from my memories.

25 The homework assignment depends on what State you live in. There are basically two kinds of States in these United States at this point.....Free States and Slave States.

If you live in a blue State you are living in a slave state and you are a subject to the whims of the King of that State. If you try to exercise your constitutional right of freedom of travel you will be punished as the State sees fit.

26 Greetings Weasel and Horde.
Thanks for the gun thread. I ran across an oddity recently.
The Seattle cops had done a drug bust, for a change. Weapons seized included a, "Bow Gun". Curious, I looked into this thing since it wasn't a crossbow. It's an air rifle that propels a crossbow bolt. Not cheap either. The bolts are hollow and you select the tip for it yourself. Amazon sells them as does Cabela's on line. The usually well versed guys at my local one had never heard of these things.
Has anyone encountered one of these in the wild?

33 I did some shooting this weekend with my H&K VP9 with a red dot. It is a few years old, so it doesn't have the factory cutout for the red dot. That means it sits higher on the slide and I can't co-witness.

I tried some speed drills (nothing crazy) and found that I was so distracted by trying to find the red dot that I lost trigger discipline and fired low enough that I immediately stopped.

The magic load was 24 SD and 36 ES.

Soooo much easier to use the iron sights. Thus, if I ever need to use my gub I hope it's an outdoor situation. Continued working on those fundamentals Weasel focuses on...and what do you know? I also tend to my business quietly will avoiding any large crowds, gatherings or dirty hippies rushing to some concert by some has been musicians. Like the man said, "Situational Awareness" 24/7. 41 Hi Weasel!

I did my homework.

Since I live and work in a blue city, I am constantly aware of people around me. When I drive, I am looking for anything unusual. I would NEVER drive in some areas of town.

May 1st is MayDay, usually open season for disrupting traffic downtown. Unfortunately, it's also my day to work at our northern location, forcing me to drive through the city. Getting to work will not be an issue. Getting home makes me nervous.

I am not afraid to push someone out of my way, with my car, who is trying to make me stop. I will not be bullied.

I really think that if a gun was not built to accept a red dot you should not mount one.
Unless you have the skill necessary to cut away the section of the slide where one would put the red dot.

Just my 10 cents worth ( adjusted for Bidenomics)

58 I really need to comment on this particular group of morons. I had never fired a gub in my life, and when we finally got out of LA County, CA I swore I would learn how to. The people I have met have been so very generous with their time, experience, advice, and equipment. And then there are those who will take the time to seriously meet you where you are at in your journey...they listen to what you say, and when you express having a problem with something, will stop you, explore that, and help you find a solution. They will realize when you are attempting something for the first time that a verbal explanation may not be enough, and provide you a visual learning example. Who will center your focus on what is important and what is not. For this, and for so much more, mere words of thanks seem insufficient. But I am not a person who forgets kindness, and will readily pay it back one day

I am in the same situation the nurse ratched is in, work in a large BLUE city (NYC) but live in one of the safer boroughs.
I am required to go into the office 3 days a week. When I do I am always keeping my head on a swivel. And thankfully, I have not taken the subway for any reason for quite a few years. Want to keep that trend going

It is possible for me to get a conceal carry thanks to NYSRPC vs Bruen, but in NYC one of the things they want now is all my social media ID's. I will never give government permission to poke around in my postings.

64 Hi Grateful!

If your prime motivation for becoming a firearm owner is to use one for self defense, I encourage you to also take your EMPTY pistol and practice around the corners and hallways in your home leading to the front door. Or back door. Practice going around a corner and raising your firearm. Is there a kitchen island you can scoot around? How about stairs?

I have also practiced at the range in low light. Meaning, I don't turn on the light at the station and I wear sunglasses. I can still see, of course, but low light is something to adjust to.

67 A little while ago I said make sure to buy mags and said that one of the pain points of owning Sigs is that they want $50 ea for their mags and you just have to live with that.

So someone (who will gratefully remain unnamed) told me about their online gun shop that had some P320 mags for half price. Sure enough it was a deal.

Another funny thing that Sig has done with the P320 line - they have a zillion models to appeal to whatever you want - and they have ingeniously made two different sorts of magazines - one is compatible with one type of grip module, and one is compatible with a different type of grip module (one mag has a flat floorplate, one has a floorplate with "wings"). My P320 has the wing type. Guess what the half price mags did not have?

That's on me - BUT life is not all bad. I wanted a flared magwell for the P320 because it is my "competition" gun and its just as expensive to put a flared magwell on it as it is to put a Wilson Combat grip module on. So I got the new grip module (cause Wilson Combat!) and it works with the half -price Legion Mags with the flat floorplate. So win-win!

72 Hi fellow gun enthusiasts

Kind of tired tonight so not sure how long I will stay but wanted again to remind everyone that if you are coming to the NoVaMoMe and want to shoot with the MGC on Sunday, send me an email.
Had a bit of a disappointment yesterday. Blaster was kind enough to install the Holosun on my new Glock48mos. The sight is fantastic and very accurate but the Glock kept stovepiping. No matter what ammo we tried it kept happening. Blaster has been working on it and hopefully will figure out what is wrong but I only got to shoot a few rounds.
The bright spot was a surpressed rifle that Ed brought and was a dream to shoot.
He can give the details as I should probably write stuff down being 29 and all.

Is that being challenged? It certainly should be since the only possible reason for it is to make a subjective judgement of "fitness" which, if I understand correctly, Bruen explicitly forbids.

95 A little gunsmithing question for the assembled Gun-horde. As swa mentioned above her G48 has a little trouble. Everybody says about Glocks "well they just work" and this little guy just doesn't. Since the Holosun was just added that became a possible culprit and we considered new springs etc. but it is now ruled out. The reason why the gun isn't extracting right is that the extractor has something wrong with it (I know this seems, err, fundamental, but there it is.)

Here is what I can see without any disassembly beyond field strip - the extractor which is an itty bitty piece of metal on the breech block is loose. Looking at other Glocks, there is a rod in the slide that pushes against the extractor, I take it that this rod is spring loaded as the extractor has to move to extract. On swa's pistol there is a gap between the rod and the extractor and when the slide is back the extractor moves freely. This is definitely not the way it should be.

I am thinking maybe the rod needs lube (hey this is a family gun thread!) - hoping that it is just that simple. Anyone ever seen this? It is decidedly un-Glocklike.

Put a drop of lube on the plunger when you reassemble. And yes, it is un-Glocklike. If you don't get an easy fix, call their customer support.

Sharon, that rifle was the B&T SPR 300 PRO. This is an integrally suppressed bolt action rifle chambered in .300 Blackout. B&T claims that when using subsonic ammo, this is the quietest centerfire rifle in the world. Those of us on the outdoor range would agree that if it isn't the quietest, it's right at the top of the heap. At 100 yards, the impacts of the bullets on steel drown out the noise of the shot, which is about the same as a BB gun. If you've got the cash and time for the paperwork for two NFA stamps (SBR and suppressor), this is definitely something worth looking into. I think it's nice for rifle newbies because you don't need hearing protection to shoot the rifle. There's no muzzle flash, and the recoil is very controllable.

It was especially frustrating because this Holoson MRS Carry is made specifically for the G48mos, G43x mos and Hellcat models. Your suggestion did come up and I happen to have a lighter spring because I changed the spring in my old G48. However Blaster thinks he's found an issue unrelated to the sight so still working on it.

That lines up with what I saw with the gas patterns on the stove piped casings that I picked up off the ground after you cleared the jam. Shouldn't there be some play in the extractor? It has to grab the cartridge rim, after all. But I'm not convinced that extractor looseness is a good thing.

Thank you, John Cornyn. Per a video I watched (maybe Wm Kirk, the guy in the car video above) one of the things that AFT will use to "presume" that you're a dealer and not just selling off a private collection is if you sell multiple of the same model and caliber of gun. What would you call someone who owns more than one of a particular model of gun? Oh right, a collector.[/c]

I had seen this green dot at a Gun show and have been lusting after it ever since. I could not put it on my G48 because it was just didn;t make sense so I bought this model. You can imagine hwo diappointing it was when a model that performed every time I picked it up did something my old model never did.

Negative...They do move a lot of weapons so I would imagine they buy low.

I have used Gunbroker and GunSpot to much success though the years for selling. You can research other sellers and see what they are asking and why and then decide where your weapon fits in in comparison for a selling price.

Yes your observation on the casings was a good one. I can see working the slide that sometimes the extractor sticks out and sometimes it correctly seats. My guess would be that when the extractor sticks out there isn't a good seal on the chamber and that leads to the burn marks on the casing. But when the extractor seats correctly it ejects correctly and no burn marks.

The rod that butts up against the extractor would hold in place all the time and it is not doing that now.

That rule will be put on hold once it appears in the Federal register. GOA has already said they will challenge it and they have a very strong case for it to be over turned based on the heller decision. Historically citizens have never been mandated to *get permission* to sell their personal firearms.

151 Looking at a diagram of Glock slide parts, there is an extractor depressor plunger and an extractor depressor plunger spring. I am sure that is the "rod" that butts up against the extractor and it is spring loaded as I suspected.

Someone upthread suggested it might be a broken spring and could be but I hope it isn't. I am hoping it's just some crud in there binding it up.

159 This was first hit on Google.

I have a G33 that had the slide milled for an RMR, now the extractor plunger rod is stuck, it won't come out. Since I was cautious using the proper length screw to mount the RMR I suspect either poor milling causing metal burrs or a gob of locktite is stopping the rod from coming out, I can move it back about an 1/8" of an inch, so far the ejector works fine. Anyone have a recommendation to dissolve locktite or otherwise to get the rod out?

Huh. It isn't locktite, but we had to use longer screws on the Holosun because the ones that hold the cover plate on aren't long enough. Maybe related.

160 Except for a relatively limited number of particularly desirable collectables, we are mostly fooling ourselves when we think our guns are "investments." You might consider either selling it person-to-person locally or try Gunbroker.
Posted by: Oddbob at April 28, 2024 07:58 PM (/y8xj)

I understand that you'll be fortunate to get 50% of a gun's nominal value (Blue Book is the usual standard) when selling it. That's because the middleman buying it has to pay for all their overheads (building, employee wages, utilities, etc.) out of the price they'll sell it for. The $$ you get is what's left over after those fixed costs get covered.

163 Situational awareness?

Youngest daughter went out to eat with a bunch of friends last night before prom. They all left the table at the same time to go through the buffet. When it was time to pay, her credit card had been stolen from her purse that she left at the table.

The only good news, is that after I hung up from the phone call, my wife said; "I know, I know, she gets it from me."

Situational awareness can be taught, but I think it is mostly a mindset. I have worked on it with multiple family members and made very little progress.

That was 40+ years ago when there was surplus stuff advertised all over the place. You could get stuff back then $40-50 cheaper than gun store if you had a Class III and bought in bulk. You could buy a case of surplus SMLE Mark III's cheap and sell them to your buddies.

185 Most folks don't realize how the ATF works. They do not go out "looking" for this or that gun "violation" but work off of tips and complaints. They do not have the personal to go around patrolling for Joe Blow who drilled a 3rd hole or Jane Glasspipe who made a oil filter silencer, but they do respond to the Ken or Karen who call shit in because Sam sold this or that and Ken or Karen lost the sale or the idiot at the public range who has to show everyone his Glock switch. Under Joe Biden, they also work the political angle of fear and intimidation with changing the laws and regs on a whim so no one knows the skinny.

Which is why you never see the ATF in Da Hood. Folks there be keeping their mouths shut and the democrat party shields them.

199 Thanks for the La Gloria cigar review. I have that one in a sampler pack waiting to move on deck into the regular wine/humidor. On a lark got a box of another La Gloria cigars for $40. Don't recall offhand the series but it was an oscuro wrapper (very tasty) and came in a red 'hatbox'.

Today tried a La Palina El Diario (toro). Very good construction, firm stick, very good draw and burn. Susposed to be full body. Despite 93 rating I thought it was a bit flat, but stuck with it to the end.Never did get 'apple' out of it. A lot of leather and a hint of pepper.

211 HOMEWORK:
And nowhere in there does he mention the felony of Illegal Detention. That is a VIOLENT felony. It's the equivalent of KIDNAPPING. At the moment they try to prevent him (specifically - not just some mob of idiots sitting in the road) from going anywhere in a violent fashion, IMO, in most jurisdictions, he is authorized lethal self-defense. Car or gun.

Also, what he neglected to mention is that when the dude was pepper sprayed - on offense, not defensively - he had been assaulted with a deadly weapon. The person who sprayed him had NOT been attacked. Therefore the incapacitation that method causes is a lethal attack, itself. (Read Branca.)

At THAT point, IMO, he is authorized deadly force to escape. The fact there is a vehicle blockade at the other end of that block makes it absolutely true they are attempting to illegally detain him in a violent fashion, and every single person attacking my vehicle is going to suffer violence to their person at that point.

214 So, on a more serious note,

Range report:
Before the focus started, I got to fire MAE's 9mm carbine for a few rounds. Very fun, but I was a bit low at 25 yards. *sigh*

Then focused and did one handed drills, five rounds at a time, right at center mass , left headshots at seven yards.

I shot better left handed than right (I'm left handed but shoot right as I'm right eye dominate). It's a challenge to reload one handed.

I did practice racking a slide one handed at home. No rounds of course. I found the best way for me, if I had shoes on, was to use the grooves in my undersoles to grab the slide from the top.

While I agree with you, and Branca and I have had extensive communications I have to admit that like Branca I am troubled at the Apple River trial up in Wisconsin.

Unless the DA and jury were THAT angry at the guy lying initially about the nature of the incident an obvious self-defense stabbing got turned into a murder one conviction.

The evidence, and the testimony should have led to a different outcome, I strongly suspect there is a coordinated attack on the right to self-defense underway by the Soros gang.

I really think that if a gun was not built to accept a red dot you should not mount one.
Unless you have the skill necessary to cut away the section of the slide where one would put the red dot.

Just my 10 cents worth ( adjusted for Bidenomics)

Posted by: Scuba Dude

Not the only concern, semi autos are built around specific recoil springs and slide weight for whatever cartridge bullet and powder combo it was designed for. (Foreign 9mm are often designed around the 9 mm NATO load which is a fairly warm 124 gr load). Domestic wondernines from the likes of Smith for a long while were designed around the 115 gr. Most domestic and foreign will happily feed 147 gr.

When you monkey though with the slide weight by removing part of the metal to put red dots on, it will change the recoil impulse unpredictably.

Long and short, put red dots on newish firearms where the work is already done by the mfg. for maximum reliability.

My experience is based on one Dallas ATF agent that was returning my stolen property. He said that they have so many complaints about FFL dealers that they don't have to go looking for anything. They have more work just following up complaints than they can handle.

And I have some small machine screws that are correct diameter and pitch, that happen to be 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 in length. The 3/8 is too short and the 1/2 is too long.

Grr.

It isn't. Extractor springs have to be very strong which is often why it is a pita to remove them and you always use safety glasses when doing so.

On occasion, they can break on removal and that spring strength can propel the pieces at a mite high velocity.

As I get older, I get more crotchity and follow the KISS standard on firearms for serious social work occasions. It is generally easier to work with what the manufacturer did than to go off on adding accessories. That is often how a nice, boring, reliable Glock turns into a malfunction junction.

Fitting parts is finicky and adapting things like screws etc. for accessories are often rather nightmarish. This is even more true when dealing with antiques with parts that can be made of unobtanium.

If you must alter a firearm to make it yours, always work on the least expensive and easily obtained part--not something like a revolver frame or slide/bolt/receiver. Then if you bugger it up, you can get a replacement easily.

Worstest disassembly I had was I was shooting a Norinco SKS with a spike bayonet when the bayonet decided to leave the rifle and make a new home in my thigh. The screw that held the bayonet to the folding mechanism had decided to come loose.

I check that screw anytime I shoot any SKS so I don't get SKS Thigh.

Depending on where you live, the boys in blue often view confiscated firearms as their toys and perks of the job and sometimes it takes lots of time and effort up to hiring an attorney to get it back.

Other times, they are indifferent to storage and you get one back that is filthy, rusted, and engraved all over with id marks if the item was seized for a case.

Moral is, don't use expensive firearms that you cannot afford to replace for serious social work purposes.

Not according to the sign on my gun closet. It points out that small children are not cut out for individual firearms, based on recoil and sheer size. But crew-served weapons are ideal, since they don't require direct strength to lift to fire, and they enhance cooperation with team skills.

275 Great advice about what to say - and not say - after a self-defense shooting.

Actually, the best advice for any encounter with police where you might be arrested: Do not try to talk your way out of it; you won't. Say, "I want to talk to a lawyer" and shut up.

You might want to explain, you might spend a night in jail, but Zip It. Your story can wait.

Criminal law is state specific and you not only have to know the statute but the caselaw which can get a bit problematic. Also very useful to know the jury instructions for that particular jurisdiction as that is what the jury will hear.

If you can still find it, Mitch Vilos and his son produced a 50 state summary of the statute, caselaw, and the jury instructions (Self Defense Law for the 50 States) on self defense and that is well worth perusing as the author is a well known Utah Attorney focusing on trial law and a member/attorney of the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Also has about six editions on his Utah specific guide to firearm laws of that state.

Take some nail polish or liquid paper and put that across the screw and the surrounding retainer. Easy to tell if the screw has moved. I use that for technique for gas block retaining screws, etc. Both nail polish and liquid paper stick well and are easy to remove if you need to.

Nail polish also works as a quasi easy to remove threadlocker if you don't have purple loctite or its variant around.

It is always a good idea to study the states from their own point of view, and to buy a self-defense experienced lawyers' briefing on how the area DAs and local culture approach the matter.

There is a wide valley in the understanding of self-defense theory as a whole but also the particulars of the body of law's interpretations between for example Ohio (where I was raised, and worked in protection) and here in Louisiana where I now live and do contractor work not related to personal protection.

Ohio because of case law had to make tacit deep changes to the notion of "duty to retreat" and wound up defining "stand your ground" theory much more explicitly than Louisiana had to.

Turns out that is because in Louisiana damn near universally it is an understood that nobody has a duty to retreat in their home, nor their vehicle and so there was no schizoid case law (other than NOLA which may as well be its own state in some ways) so the new law was much more linear and direct on constitutional carry and SYG.

But I don't think there is that big a difference at least performance wise in a $400ish AR15 and one at $1500.

James at TFP TV likes to rip on PSA but he did a test with a $400ish PSA rifle and one of his preferred Gucci guns and he was mad that he got better groups with the PSA....

The AR-10 was probably the best battle rifle NATO had so of course it was never widely adopted....

the ram line on the recoil impulse makes it without a doubt the smoothest aiming and maintaining 7.62*51 system we had, very amenable to walking fire for suppression as well.

Remember the trials where it lost to the M-14 were set up to have one platform replace the Garand AND the BAR....

the AR-10 is as good a walking weapon as the BAR.

I find it fascinating that States have their own 2 Amendment laws when none are allowed for in the Constitution - and most criminal statutes are governed by the bill of rights as well, not by the political whims of state politicians. These aren't just things that individual state legislatures can ignore...but they do apparently.

The point of joining these United States, was that the laws and rights of citizens of that union were going to be the same in, say, New York, as they are in Utah or So. Carolina. The reason for that was so a lawyer from Kentucky would also have a clue what was legal in NY or CA. The fact that this is not the case is what is wrong with the judicial procedures that differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Got to get back up to speed at the range first with carry weapons . I have lots of medical issues that would bore most folks to tears when discussing them but it makes recoil management difficult and peripheral neuropathy caused by inflammatory arthritis leads me to have heavy but smooth triggers as a result. Also use a crush grip as well due to neuropathy. You sacrifice bleeding edge accuracy but right now, reloading with speedloaders in a revolver is a no go so semi auto it is.

I literally cannot 'feel' a light trigger anymore which makes any glass break type triggers dangerous to me for carry.

That was my first thought. But then you have to take it out, file it a bit, put it back in, run the slide, then take it out again, file it a bit more, put it back in, run the slide....

Better to look for screws, so you just have to take it out, put in the new screw, run the slide, take that screw out, put a new one in, run the slide....

And, yeah, I probably would have used Loctite on just that screw, too.

Comes about because of federalism. And btw, the Bill of Rights actually protects these state powers to determine their own criminal laws via the Tenth Amendment.

What I get pissed off about is that big cities are suddenly not even following state law but inventing their own via selective prosecutions for people they want to punish and waving off prosecutions for those that politically the Dems do not want to punish like ordinary street criminals and illegals.

Vicinage is about the jury--not the prosecutor and leads directly to due process problems for individuals that are being martyred in urban districts because it is useful to the Dems. Laws are not being applied equally to similarly situated individuals.

I think you are one of the few people here that shoots with a laser.

I have bad eyes and the laser makes it very easy to put the muzzle on the target. However, it is MUCH easier for me to create a stable shooting platform holding the gun at mid-chest rather than as high as my eye line.

Do you shoot the same (posture and hand position) with the laser as you do with sights?

GWB, it is not just the weight but the distribution of that red dot and its mount's weight on the slide that can cause issues and even air resistance which makes it a problem that I would not want to mess around with on a firearm not designed for a red dot in the first place.

For us normal folks, you have to engage in trial and error playing with ammo loads and recoil springs to compensate for reliable operation.

I don't trust a pistol that I have to baby for serious defense work and I am willing to trade some degree of accuracy for dead solid reliability.

To me, match pistols and match barrels are for ranges and shooting competitions--not for when life and death is on the line. Some folks are willing to take that risk which is fine for them.

You are using the laser as an index which is what lasers were designed to do. They quite literally shine in application when a person is using non-standard firing positions where being able to line up the eyes and the front sight even for a 'flash' is not possible.

Just make sure though you know what the laser is zeroed for and the over under at different distances is with self defense ammo.

They also work great as a diagnostic for dry firing if all the usual precautions are followed for dry firing.

There are lots of expert shooters among the Horde. They are very good at teaching expert technique.

I think I want training from one of the people that teaches the three worst shooting cops in each class, such that they can pass their certification test.

I have a poor-boy range at our farm that I can modify as needed. I just need to start with good enough habits such that I can be improved with more practice.
