There's still a House bill dealing with border security in Congress from this session passed by the House and sitting in the Senate untouched. I mean, there's no point sending another. Back when i was traveling too much, i would carry a spare tv remote with me so i could mute or turn off all the airport televisions playing the view or cnn. Once i got the codes figured out, it was standard to just walk through and change everything on my route to fox or off.

One can get plans and permits, what is difficult is to get funding.

That much floor space going on line requires a huge infrastructure to support it. Everything from power, water, sewage to parking along with every sort of retail and service that would backstop the daytime and night time operations of those who are in it.

There isn't enough cheap money for that. At best it is a Chinese Ghost City plan.

I think the hope among the GOP and the left is that Trump gets pinched and put in jail for some minor offense, thus giving them cover to drop him off the ballot.

Whether that's a legit reason or not doesn't matter to them. Then we can get treated to another round of legal shit shows.

I grew up in not one but two different historic homes. My husband only one but it was older than either of mine (due to where he lived, there were no houses here then just trees and bunnies).

Sinks can last. The floors were kept up. Leaded windows need work but we had the originals. Slate roofs have parts replaced but still with slate so...

We both had basement spring set ups to get fresh water - worked just fine. Most things in the kitchen I remember were original, probably just not fittings and such. around here loads of business for restorers.

My kitchen still has a metal sink and cabinet that looks like it's from the 20s or 30s maybe. The house was built in 1910.

I'm also still using a microwave from JCPenney from 1984. It groans a lot now and then, but it's not dead yet!

Also has two concrete slabs where the original outhouses were.

Right, with Whatley portrayed by the great Bryan Cranston (AKA Heisenberg).

I read a really good behind-the-scenes book called "Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything."

In it they tell the story of how a member of the lighting crew or something was up on a ladder watching them film the classic scene where Whatley is about to put Jerry under ... and in between takes, the crew-member says to Cranston: "You know what would be funny? If you dentist character takes a hit of that laughing gas first."

Cranston loved it; didn't tell Seinfeld, and on the next take does it -- and he said Jerry nearly fell out of the chair laughing ...

Heh. You’re not wrong.
Every time we have a major repair I say, well we signed up for this.

But the charm part is worth it. And not just the house but the neighborhood. Every house in my hood is 110-140 years old. With 100 year old maple and oak trees. Every house is distinct, no cookie cutter stuff. And it’s downtown and walkable to everything. It’s a small city downtown, ie not an urban hellhole like Chicago downtown.

it's an acquired taste for sure!

but new houses have plenty of problems too, esp nowadays. real brick might need repointing but it's solid as f*ck ... slate roof needs new pieces here and there but not a whole new roof ... wood is wood just keep the bugs out and keep it nice and clean and oiled and you cannot beat the smell of the old wood (as long as it's not rotted!)

I grew up this way tho. with crazy oil boilers and pumps in the basement and tetchy fireplaces. used to it.

PA Primary yesterday, the very 1st time my polling area used poll books (Knowink). It was very interesting because the power failed in the specific area in which voting was taking place, so electrical power cords from a powered area of the building had to be ran to the 2 recording voting machines and all poll books in use.

Polling official took name, found it on a poll book and I signed on it. After other officials verified party and voting number, I received a tiny piece of paper on which that info had been annotated and then I handed it to another official who handed me my paper ballot. Made my written selections, went down to the assigned voting machine and fed the ballot in under the watchful eye of another voting official.

Here in FJB's pocket, not much difference but for signing in & recording party & voting # on the poll books but the lack of paper backup makes me wary: 03/07/24, WHYY, Elections 2024 Elections - '101: What to know about electronic pollbooks, which Pa. counties use them, and more. E-pollbooks speed up key processes for poll workers. But like most election technology, they are potentially vulnerable.'
