Don't forget, Trump was also supporting the Ukraine aid package when talking to Congressmen. This may, in fact, be multi-dimensional chess - there is an excellent chance that Ukraine is going to lose the war this summer, and of course the Republicans would be blamed for that if the aid package didn't pass. As Julian Röpcke, a fair-minded German journalist who is quite pro-Ukrainian noted: All the American money, all the Western support, all the German weapons won’t help if Ukraine does not mobilize another 250,000 soldiers at least to reinforce a far too thin manned front. I've seen a report that the Russians are removing mines on the Russian - Ukrainian front in Kharkiv and Sumy provinces, and the Russians just took out the antenna on the TV tower in Kharkiv to screw up Ukrainian communications, so the start of the Russian summer offensive may be imminent. They do not have the manpower. They killed them all in Stalin- and Zhukov-esque frontal assaults.
So say my sources. It's a bit more complicated than that - the Ukrainians have been mostly drafting rural people, the working class, and non-Russian speakers. There's still a sizable pool of people they haven't drafted, but they are from influential families, which causes -er- internal political problems. We'll see how the just-passed mobilization law works. One thing contained in the mobilization law is that Ukrainian men of draftable age will not be able to get their passports renewed at Ukrainian embassies abroad, unless their military documents are current. That will be interesting to watch. Posted by: The ARC of History! at April 22, 2024 10:31 PM (YAtuc) 118

Oh, and for a fascinating glimpse into the future of "Our Democracies", the government censor in Australia has demanded that all social media companies remove a video showing a jihadist stabbing a Maronite priest during a church service in Australia.
Everyone complied, except for X. Elon Musk said that the censorship order was illegal, but still blocked the video in Australia, pending a resolution of the legal case. The Australian government said that wasn't good enough - the video needed to be blocked worldwide, not just in Australia. So, the Australian government is asserting the authority to censor the entire internet, if something happened in Australia that they want to suppress. UKR is just a little country far away of which we know nothing. Just like the Czech Republic in 1938. Anyway, when Moldova and Georgia are overrun, at least we'll have gotten used to it. What's the harm if Putin reassembles the old Soviet Block, anyway? Isolationism: everything old is new again. Posted by: mnw at April 22, 2024 10:56 PM (NLIak) 198
Currently in between horrible technical work about the usual war shit and current events, I'm writing a series of vampire fiction.
It's not 'Twilight', my vampire is a straight-up predator and the work is not something I can share on the Book Thread or the Horde site, which I am about to get back into. My vampire is an obscene killer. Oh, there is a sequel to the sci-fi book. Range does go on, with Claire IX. And it's not like Future World, it's better than that. With the Olympics opening in Paris in just a couple months, how are the Israeli athletes going to be protected? Is anyone else having flashbacks to Munich in 1972?
The Eurovision song contest is upcoming in Malmo, Sweden, which officially is 12% Muslim (probably considerably more, of course). The Israeli government has told the Israeli Eurovision contestant to stay in her hotel room at all times, except when attending official Eurovision functions. Apparently I am the only Eastern Orthodox Christian on this board at all, and my sources from that side very often do not coincide with what the West says. Don't get me wrong: I firmly believe the Nationalist/Tribal/Ethnic factor inevitable in autocephalous Churches can and does get out of control.
But I will also stress that I personally, am not a member of any EOC Church in North America: I am directly associated with, baptised into, another Orthodox Church not in the USA. This is an important distinction to me: this American Orthodox business trying to canonize Robert E. Lee is nuts and it's not a good idea, much less a good look. I keep up with what is going on in the EOC, and this Ukraine thing is a very serious issue, especially considering who is sponsoring the 'new' Uke church. The radiant (point from which they all appear to originate from) is to the West of Vega, in the constellation Lyra. The radiant rises around 9:30PM here, and is about 15 degrees about the horizon now. Transit (meridian crossing) is a little bit before dawn. So, if you want to see them, that's where and when to look. I haven't had any luck lately seeing any meteors when I was actively looking. Posted by: Teresa She's a six year old ball of fire. My daughter did caution us that doctors are still very concerned and that the damage from those types of injuries don't always reveal themselves immediately. I'll trust our Lord. One of her favorite things to do is go to church with us. She will ask her parents if she can come out on the weekend, without her siblings, so she can go to church. Her parents are not believers. Several months ago, she came out on a Saturday evening. She went up to play in her room. After a half an hour, she came down and sat between my wife and I and in a very serious voice, told us she wanted to give her life to Jesus. His wife has decided to end the feeding even if he says he's hungry because the nurse explained that starving is the natural process.
That's BS. That's not only the nurse, that's also the hospice organization. If their client stops eating is one thing but a family member making that decision is completely different. Sounds like burn out on the wife's part, which I can understand, but that doesn't make it a viable alternative. My daughter was a hospice nurse for six years. Oh, I guess we are. You laugh. Wikipedia: Membership of the SEU increased during the mid-1930s, but the SEU was targeted as part of the Stalinist purge against Esperanto.[28] The group was not officially disbanded, as the Soviet government instead targeted members until operations could no longer continue.[18] In the purge the leader of the Soviet Esperantist Union, Ernest Drezen, was executed by gunshot on 27 October 1937. Drezen's reputation was rehabilitated by the USSR in 1957, and he was posthumously readmitted to the Communist Party in 1989.[29] Posted by: The ARC of History! at April 22, 2024 11:44 PM (YAtuc) 329

If anyone wants to know why Erdogan declared the Hagia Sofia a Muslin Mosque, it has to do with that. It was a defensive measure against the incursive West. Again, I don't do Catholic or Western Protestant so I don't know anything about that perspective and to be honest I really don't care. But Ukraine has touched off a serious conflict among the autocephalous Churches of the EOC, and it's based in Turkiye/autocorrect by Muslims and Ukraine by Chabad Jews. I've said this before: EOC does not recognize Chosen People and does not recognize any Holy Land. Something to keep in mind. If he wants a small meal and to have a conversation with a loved one, that should be encouraged. Especially if he is lucid. I'm sorry. This is so very sad. Stepdaughter Two is a contrarian who yells "This is my DAD!" if you question the omniscience of the hospice nurse. I have been in nursing now 30 years.
The majority of my time was ER though, I was always enamored by my associates that worked in Hospice. The ones I worked with at times....I could not help but admire their overwhelming compassion to their patients and their dedication to helping them come to the final passing. Though their overriding focus was on their patient, they would give such caring heartfelt support to the various family members as well. Such BIG HEARTS in a single nurse. I for one no not where we get such graceful, beautiful, humans. Posted by: Nightwatch at April 23, 2024 12:24 AM (TDvv2) 427

Posted by: Miklos has Stories at April 23, 2024 12:44 AM (oGyF9) Well, Maleventum was renamed Beneventum because they defeated (or at least fought to a standstill) Pyrrhus near there. From wiki: It is probable that the Oscan or Samnite name was Maloeis, or Malieis (Μαλιείς in Ancient Greek), whence the form Maleventum would derive, like Agrigentum from Acragas (now Agrigento), Selinuntium from Selinus (the ruins of which are at now Selinunte), etc.[13] Me: which is unsatisfying. I can sometimes, in my work, what I do, get a glimpse of what might cause that kind of behavior but I can never, never understand it. But best theme song ever? No love for, say, The Wild, Wild West, or the original Hawaii Five-O, or Miami Vice, or Peter Gunn? Mission Impossible? That score alone has earned Lalo Schriffin a spot in popular culture that has endured for nearly six decades. Magnum PI? Greatest American Hero? Cheers? The X Files? Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? Hawaii Five Oh has, without a doubt, the most compelling and captivating of all the T.V. theme songs.
You're going to be riveted down, listening to it the very last note. No matter how many times you've heard it. Is it the BEST Teevee theme song? Well, I kinda doubt it. There's those with lyrics, sentiments, more lighthearted melodies and all that. You might *know* the Cheers theme, better. It might evoke all the best feelings of your '80s times. But you'll STOP what you're doing, and groove to the Five Oh rip, any time you're able. There should've been a three minute AM pop radio version of it, and a ten minute FM late night freelance D.J. version of it for those of us in the early Pirate FM days. As with Bose, Klipsch is a bit... particular, as to room dimensions and placement. All speakers are, to a degree, but Bose is KNOWN for this, and Klipsch, with it's horn design, is, too. Hence the Advent Heritage (best of ALL Advent designs, before The Fall), and the JVC zip Five and zip Six. Those are the Massage Chairs of all speakers, regardless of placement or dimension. They just DO, and you gotta just ENJOY. Audio snobs are the wine snobs of cigar snobs of pipe snobs of bourbon snobs of scotch snobs, everywhere. Optics snobs are exempt from this conversation. Because THEY start in with Nikon vs Canon or Nightforce vs... *plonk, bullet hit*.... ...wars. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 23, 2024 02:28 AM (e6UQI) 603

Heartbreaking, but she actually did redeem herself after all of that. Became a nurse, actually nursed her dying mother who was probably much like Miklos' Old Mama (maybe worse). Some of those vintage Sansui speakers fetch Big Wampum, now. Most, don't. Being basic 'consumer grade' drek. But Sansui really did make some Very Serious Audio Grade stuff. Their G Series receivers were, and are, legendary. And are appreciating assets, even now. You get into the REAL UPPER range of Sansui, JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood, Marantz... all taht '70s Silver Face audio. Those receivers still fetch +$1,000 in great condition, even to this day. TOP of their lines? Bring $3,00 to start. And more, if you're serious. Remember, folks. Thats just for the RECEIVER. From the 1970s. Quality of anything newer DECLINED with the increase of Integrated Circuitry. (chips) Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 23, 2024 02:45 AM (e6UQI) 622

It is near Corona Borealis noon, it's about over the meridian. If you want to see the spot where this nova is supposed to happen (sometime before Oct), go out and look. You'll see the near full Moon. Which is mostly made of gasses, which is why people can live there. Cover up the Moon with your thumb, and close one eye. This will kill the glare. To the right(west) you'll see a bright start. That's Spica (Alpha Virginis). Now, keeping the glare of the Moon covered, look up higher, to the left (east). You'll see a bright reddish star. That's Arcturus (Alpha Bootis). You'll see that makes sort of squat isosceles triangle with two other bright-ish stars to the east. The one is the middle on top is Izar, Epsilon Bootis. The one to the left is Gemma(or Alphecca), which is Alpha Corona Borealis. That's the one we want. If the Moon weren't so bright, you'd easily see the little crown of Corona Borealis. Anyway, a bit to the east and below Gemma is our guy, T. Coronae Borealis. You can't see, too dim. But when it goes nova, it will be as bright as Gemma there. Posted by: Jim That may be the key (pardon the pun) right there. A TV theme song that grabs you with all the verve and intensity that an arrangement of notes can provide. Plus, a theme song that says "What you are about to see is epic and awesome and you're going to look back later in despair if you don't watch it." Mission Impossible had that - even now, those first few notes signal sophisticated, intricate, exciting, suspenseful, high-stakes shenanigans are going to go down. The Wild, Wild West had that element as well, for me at least, but it works best when Jim West or Artemus Gordon are about to pull some nineteenth century high tech spy gizmo out and escape whatever terrible fate Dr. Loveless has in mind for them. (And I still love the gimmick of phasing the final shot of each act into a sepia tinged image of the perils faced by our heroes. They did an homage to that on The Tick (Spoooon!) and MST3K during the season when the Mads were trapped in Ancient Rome. Posted by: John Drake at April 23, 2024 03:08 AM (9Uomk) 655

And I second the votes for Route 66 and Hill Street Blues. The former was a huge favorite for my father and myself, and I still think Route 66 had the best series finale ever - Not only does Martin Milner hold onto his much-prized Corvette (which morphed from a 1960 model to a 1961 model to a ... by the end, it's a '64), defeat all the con artists and swindlers who were dead-cert guaranteed to bring him down; no, he does all of that and then drives off to even greater adventures with an adoring Barbara Eden as his new co-pilot. How many of us in 1964 might have wished for just such an ending - kick-ass car, one of the most beautiful women on the planet madly in love with you, and the promise of more excitement to come. Those two show every sign that, when it strikes them, they can park the Vette, acquire a home, and live their best lives as husband and wife, mom and dad in their fictional never-never world.

I remember Hill Street Blues and The Greatest American Hero being regular fixtures on FM broadcasts where I lived, (FM had finally shoved its way onstage past AM in NE Mississippi) and there wasn't a place where both couldn't be found on the jukeboxes, which lingered up there far longer than other parts of these United States. Magnum PI had its stay on radio and jukebox for a while as well, and there were a few others, such as Happy Days, The Bob Newhart Show, S.W.A.T., St. Elsewhere, and LA Law.

And if Cutie Honey allows us to open the door to anime themes, then I counter with Cowboy Bebop. Opening theme song Tank stirs the spirit and really plays into the jazz aesthetic the show was shooting for, and Real Folk Blues wrings your heart out with the loss and despair that the lyrics only lightly touch upon. This extended into individual scene scoring such as the use of the moody, foreboding Rain as Spike walks into an abandoned cathedral to free his friend Faye. That music, plus a tense stand-off that conventional TV has yet to echo, opens the ball for an epic gun battle that leads to the top of the cathedral and (for Spike) a plunge from a stained glass window.
Then there's the unfortunately-titled Big-O, whose theme promised sci-fi intrigue, giant Mechas, a plot which pre-dated many of the concepts of memory and reality in the Matrix films. The curiously romantic closing number suggests a William Gibson-esque angle where the hero, Roger (a mixture of Bruce Wayne and James Bond) is in this weird romance with R-Dorothy, an artificially intelligent android who seems to reciprocate his feelings. It's weird, but this is Japan, and it kind of ... works, I guess. Posted by: John Drake at April 23, 2024 03:48 AM (9Uomk) 710

Plus Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy, Battleship Yamamoto, Phoenix Force, and, even though it's not anime, it is Japanese (albeit cycled through American editing, re-shoots, and recutting, the original Power Rangers theme. My son and all his friends loved that opening, and it captivated them the way the Bruce Timm Batman animated series did.
Anyone remember, by the way, the parody of Ultraman that USA Night Flight did in the late eighties? Those were a delight to behold and their access to current popular music was the icing on the cake. I still fondly remember where the Ultraman team's mentor was leading off a group of Japanese children to watch a WWII move. One of the kids is whining "Not World War II again!" But the mentor promises that this time "there's a new exciting ending!" Posted by: John Drake at April 23, 2024 03:58 AM (9Uomk) 718

We've been watching the 1996 (?) TV miniseries of Streets of Laredo, the Larry McMurtry sequel to Lonesome Dove. Good casting and pacing, and since LM himself co-wrote the teleplay, faithful to his original down to dialogue. Strange to see George Carlin doing a dramatic role as a limping former Ranger. And as in LM's Western novels, the villains are savage serial killers, and memorable . . . as if Hannibal Lecter and Jame Gumb were to be installed in the Old West with all their evil intact.
