I like the detail he achieves on the facial features and the fur and the way he captured the varied skin tones of both figures. This is more realistic than I expected for the period. Looking at some other paintings by Gossaert, there is an emotional aspect, sometimes a playfulness, to many of his portraits that is very appealing. This one makes the viewer, at least this viewer, immediately wonder about all the old couple has been through in a long life together.
A side issue. The expression on the man's face made me think of Dylan Thomas. "Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light." Posted by: JTB at April 23, 2024 09:47 AM (zudum) 97

Mercy and truth have met together. Righteousness and bliss shall kiss one another. Man, in his weakness and shortsightedness believes he must make choices in this life. He trembles at the risks he takes. We do know fear.
But no. Our choice is of no importance. There comes a time when our eyes are opened and we come to realize that mercy is infinite. We need only await it with confidence and receive it with gratitude. Mercy imposes no conditions. And lo! Everything we have chosen has been granted to us. And everything we rejected has also been granted. Yes, we even get back what we rejected. For mercy and truth have met together, and righteousness and bliss shall kiss one another. Posted by: General Lorens Lowenhielm at April 23, 2024 09:49 AM (cCVOS) 103

Hats all the time, indoors and out. No central heating, and for three or four months each year, unless you are close to the fireplace, it's 39 degrees Fahrenheit everywhere else inside.
The kitchen is the only warm place in the house, due to the big cookstove. If you are a one-percenter, you might have one of those big masonry heaters, but you still went around well-hatted. You wear a sleeping hat when you go to bed in your ice-cold bedchamber, and pre-warm that bed with the bed-warmer, filled with hot coals from the grate. Posted by: BignJames This gets joked about fairly often, but it's true. I especially like Old West photos for shocking age revelations: https://tinyurl.com/4s9yk3ut I assume most of the comparative aging is just due to much more sun exposure? Maybe a little regarding modern skin care products (for women...most men don't use them). Diet probably doesn't make a huge difference, or disease...I'm sure smallpox screwed up many faces in the past, but those aren't the ones that surprise us by looking much older than we expect. I recall seeing photos from the 19th century, people smiling and clowning for the camera. It created such a stark view of people, from a time when most of the photos show this same dour expression.
If I recall, the explanation was, people were superstitious, they didn't want to reveal something that could be exploited by the devil, or something like that. I would imagine sitting for the pose, for however long you must, can't be easy either, but why oh why does the painter have to keep the faces so dour, unless he also felt compelled? So I missed the earlier thread, but the funny thing about Fetterman's monster is that most Democrats from purple states should disagree with the party on some substanial parts of the Dem platform. Compare D senators from purple states with their R compatriots.

A side issue. The expression on the man's face made me think of Dylan Thomas. "Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light." I assume most of the comparative aging is just due to much more sun exposure? Maybe a little regarding modern skin care products (for women...most men don't use them). Diet probably doesn't make a huge difference, or disease...I'm sure smallpox screwed up many faces in the past, but those aren't the ones that surprise us by looking much older than we expect.

Read the letters they mailed to relatives - “we shall meet again in the great beyond” and stuff like that. Your daughter moves to Oregon, chances are you’ll never see her again. We take a lot of things for granted. Death and disease particularly were common. Losing children and Mothers during birth, TB, malaria, smallpox and measles and polio and and and.. I was a little too old to draw inspiration from The Brady Bunch (though Marcia was quite nice to look at). But Reed never struck me as "flaming" in his performances. He'd been the son on The Defenders legal drama series with E.G. Marshall, and played a cop to Joe Mannix for a few years between that and BB. He never seemed Paul Lynde-ish or Rip Taylor-like.

I've seen many impossibles since the Chocolate Messiah ascended to the throne but I never imagined that we'd see neo Sturmabteilung roaming the streets and public spaces of the US putting an exclamation mark to the Jewish question.
Democratic Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell was arrested Monday morning in Detroit Lakes, Minn., for alleged burglary. The jail roster with the Becker County Sheriff’s Office indicates that Mitchell has been arrested for a first-degree burglary offense.
According to an official with the Detroit Lakes Police Department, a homeowner in the city called 911 at 4:45 a.m. Monday morning after discovering a person in their residence. Responding officers found the alleged burglar, made an arrest, and transported that person to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office. A jail official told Alpha News that Mitchell was still in custody as of early Monday afternoon. “Knowing very few details at this time, I am shocked by the news of Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s arrest for first-degree burglary. The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct. As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature,” Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, said in a statement.
