38 Although we do not know his name, we can tell a lot about Baldung Grien’s mature sitter from the details of his costume. The large fur collar of his coat, the jewel on his cap and the two gold chains around his neck show off his wealth. The longer chain bears two badges: the Virgin and Child within a crescent moon and surrounded by rays, and a bird of prey and a fish facing each other.

The first badge is the emblem of the Order of Our Lady of the Swan, a religious group that only admitted members of the nobility. The second is the insignia of the elite Society to the Falcon and Fish, a group that organised jousting tournaments for the noblemen based in the southern German region of Swabia

61 #38 In-Depth:

While the badge of the Virgin and Child is not worn here with one of a swan (as it is in a portrait of a lady by an anonymous German artist that is now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid), it is recognisable as the emblem of the Order of Our Lady of the Swan, a religious group that only admitted members of the nobility. Founded in the 1440s by the Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg, the Order was at the height of its popularity in the late fifteenth century, when this portrait was made. The other emblem is the insignia of the elite Society to the Falcon and Fish, a group that organised jousting tournaments for the noblemen based in the southern German region of Swabia.

The white semicircles to the bottom right are part of the sleeve of the man’s shirt; the portrait was cut down at the bottom at some point before it entered the National Gallery’s collection. When it was bought by the Gallery it included the monogram used as a signature by the celebrated German painter Albrecht Dürer, in whose studio Baldung Grien may have worked. When this was discovered to be fake it was removed. The date inscribed above the sitter’s head was, however, confirmed by technical

That was not the style at the time. Turnips were in vogue for this gentleman.

63 Aaaaalmost there. Inconsistent detailing of wealth and portrait not quite representative.

Frankly, it looks like a training exercise for apprentices in the painting shop. Various types of hair are meticulously done, but the large chains with 'honors' are fuzzy.

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to 1514, no more no less. 1514 shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be 1514. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou 1513, excepting that thou then proceed to 1514. 1515 is right out. Once the number 1514, being the 1514th number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thou foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

118 Historical Context:

This portrait by artist, Hans Baldung Grien, contains the last known depiction of the Flat Cat of Swabia.

Beginning in 1499, the Swabian Flat Cat became the collar fur for the fashionable and wealthy.

Once the Flat Cats covered the fields and hills of Swabia by the millions and could reach up to a meter and a half in length. They were gentle creatures, which fed only on the toes of the poor and a were vital part of Swabian ecology.

As a result, Swabia was also known for their toeless clogs, a vital industry that had vanished by 1535 as a result of the Swabian Flat Cat being hunted to extinction.

The subject of this portrait Fredrick von Stupen, inventor of the Beret was a man of fashion and never even in his later years went outdoors without wearing his beloved Flat Cat collars.

Can't remember the artist right now but it was the episode where they did the scientific date testing on the frame that I had just posted about. They had proved beyond all doubt that it was an original imo, going as far as determining the paint contained honey which was one of the artist's ingredients in the many recipes he had mixing his own paints. The art foundation with the final word on this artist made ruling it was not an original based just on their visual inspection.

The problem with Star Trek is the same as Star Wars, the show has not advance beyond the core conception and conceit of STTOS and STTNG, and people only really like the main characters and the writers have not really bothered to develop something new.

I think once Shatner and Stewert shuffle off this mortal coil, Star Trek will join Star Wars in the Grave of IP.

If he had any notion of how Americans feel about their animals, he'd have *never* allowed that to get out. Since he did (and setting aside the "not-too-bright" and "lazy" elements of his personality), one concludes that he has no conception of how Americans love their dogs -- and has no idea of how Americans feel generally. And/or he doesn't care.

I wonder if something of the same might be said for Kristi, to have let this stand in a book she either wrote herself, or had ghostwritten.

Wasn't that standard procedure on farms in the last century and before? Chickens were part of the farm family's lifeline, either for food, or eggs, or for sale. A chicken-killing dog couldn't be tolerated.

But yes, Kristi's telling us about it did not display good judgment in any department, least of all the political.

If you are basing her chances on what the commies would focus on, she was fair game prior to the dog story. I'm happy she's out of the running. As I pointed out the other day, she could have had the dog put down another way, she did what is done in less genteel areas of the country on a daily basis.

Her state is pretty rural. Voters there are unlikely to get their panties in a wad over shooting a chicken-killing dog.

I think it's commendable that she did the deed herself. Here, in Texas, she probably wouldn't have gotten the opportunity as the owner of the chicken probably would've owned a gun an shot the dog then and there.

That being said...yes, in state. Probably fine and understood. At a national level, probably not fine and understood. Not ready for prime time nationally.

The number of lizards whacked annually in Florida by bored kids must total in the millions.

Eh. My point is still not that she did it, per se. It is using it in a book (like using it in a campaign commercial.)

Add into that that usually dog misbehavior is a function of training and discipline. Now I have never trained hunting dogs. I would think that would be a fine line, being aggressive towards prey, but not wantonly destructive. Dogs can misunderstand, especially young ones which makes the mess more of a mess.

Again, not so much throwing stones at WHAT she did, but more that this is something you carry. Animals are a responsibility. If you have fucked up, carry it yourself, strong whamen- don't use it for your campaign.

I don't think the base, if it dislikes a politician, is going to rally around her if she admits to shooting a dog. And someone growing up in a culture where eating dogs is acceptable, and eating dog occasionally, is different from an American shooting her pet dog because it was tough to train and killed some chickens. Best case, that's something impolite everyone knows happens, but doesn't speak about.

Well, that's the whole thing.

Most dog owners are going to think of their little Puppykins or Smedley and be horrified by shooting your own pooch.

But, this isn't Little Fluffy peeing on the rug.

In the countryside, this might be a family's income or vital food source. Not everyone is rich or middle-class. So, a chicken-killing (or livestock harming dog) will not be tolerated.

Her constituents understand. But city-dwelling suburbanites or AWFL who consider their dog a child...Nope.

35% of American elites (people with postgraduate degrees, earn $150K+ per year, and live in large cities) say they would rather cheat than lose an election compared with only 7% of ordinary voters. rmgresearch.com/wp-content/u

Showing again that to be truly stupid, you need a lot of credentials.

347 I think it will be DeSantis. That would make a dream team and heads explode.

Having a burn it to the ground and salt the earth AG is more important than VP pick, I remain uncertain if Desantis would be that but he's at least worthy of consideration.

348 Didn't she recently flip on abortion?
Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at April 29, 2024 10:58 AM (9yWhg)

Yeah sort of.

She took the hard line position then when faced with it being on the actual ballot due to an old law that went into effect, she softened to a more electable position.

I don't love it but I feel it's more like Barky saying he's against gay marriage. Not a deal breaker for me. Maybe it should be but I like too many other things about her and I see what happened.

$150k is elite? We must have quite a few elites.

Not stupid, immoral.

We are being run amok by homosexuals, pedophiles, lunatics and the immoral.

352 In fact, Trump's not going to pick a woman, it's going to be Youngkin, Burgham or Scott as the wild card.
Posted by: Thomas Bender

I'm still going with Burgum. Very intelligent, self-made, staunch DJT supporter and so is his wife. I've seen a few news articles saying he's at the top of the list.
I don't particularly like his associates/bill gates, but, my opinion doesn't matter. He'd be a safe, smart choice for Trump.

It's just not something you talk about in polite company. Do you know who among every single person you know has killed a dog? No, because it's not something you go bragging about.

I believe only the electoral votes from that state are effected and they can only vote for one or the other.
