My neighbor has informed me that our racoon has returned. Must be late April.
I don't mind her and her soon to be born brood except they leave muddy racoon paw prints on my white trim I will have to pressure wash or repaint.

Meet The PetMorons

Tutti Fruitti has been featured before, but we are celebrating his comeback from a, what I am sure was a stroke, cough that was related to eating and drinking--cat dysphagia. Took him to the vet and spent a bunch of money to get less info than I already figured out; but ruled out an obstruction for the cough and refusal to eat or drink. So, just gently encouraged him to drink water and he slowly improved from there. At 16, I know that he does not have a long time left, but he is a fighter and worked his way back. I'm enjoying every day that I have with him.

I'm attaching pics of my West Highland Terrorist, Bodie. He's 4 years old and doesn't he look cute? It's a damn good thing because he's a real pistol. He is stubborn, headstrong and hasn't met a dog that he won't go after. He's a little dog that thinks he's big. In other words full of Westitude. And we love him.
The first pic is Bodie and his favorite toy, the sneaky snake. Second pic is just chilling.
My nic is MeLurkYouLongTime.

We can tell that we would love Bodie, too. Even though he has Westitude.

Cats in the evening:
We have no idea what the draw is but in the late evening Sangria and Rooney camp out with the computers. They don't stay long, it's only one of the stops on their way through the house. The rest of the day and evening they fight over the chair when it's unoccupied.

My wife and I are empty nesters. We live in a house with many pets. Birds, cats and a dog. Everybody gets along fairly well as these pictures reflect.
The first is our lab Bella and her buddy Nola. We have raised Nola from a hatchling and Bella adopted her. They canoodle together and Bella is very gentle.
The next is our White Bellied Caique and Val. The cat tolerates this indignity somehow.
Love the site and this feature.

10 We took Yellow Dog Two (Maggy) to the vet yesterday for surgery. She had a growth on her elbow that was getting larger. It didn't bother her too much other than licking on it. No pain but the vet said it either needed a biopsy because it was getting larger or it had to go completely. We opted for the get it gone route. So far she is doing fine but mad because she can't go on walks with her sister. No cone of shame yet, if she starts licking mom yells at her and that stops that.

12 One thing that I love watching kittens is their waddling. They look like short little barrels with wobbly legs - really cute. However Calico Mom's kittens seem to have developed faster and went from crawling around to running around 'wobbless' in a very short time.
They are so big that they don't all 6 fit when the milkbar opens. Mama is full of milk still but they are eating solid food too.
We noticed that the two yellow ones always stick together and they have done that from the beginning, even suckling next to each other. Maybe they bonded very early or in utero?
One gray is a mama's boy and tends to follow her all the time and the lie down with her.

18 They do follow the sun, most afternoons are at the front door which faces west. The keyboard rest stop is new; up until recently the cat waiting for a turn in the chair waited on the floor. Sangria apparently has decided it's easier to wait above seat level, as it were.

Yes. One of the three cats we brought back form Africa, a black male called surprisingly Midnight, would sit in front of the fireplace and hint to start the fire. Then he would sit so close we worried he'd burn but no, he loved it and was toastie warm on one side.

25 Mystery of the Week is, what happened to Daisy's training collar? We have looked high and low and even did the St Anthony prayer.* Y'might suspect Daisy hid it somewhere, but a) we almost never used the shock, and b) she actually seemed to like it. It's a small house with not so many places it could be. And few of us who would've taken it off her and put it... somewhere. When you start looking in the refrigerator, or the basket where it's supposed to be for the umpteenth time.... Mystery.

The only sure way to find it, of course, would be to buy a new one.

*Not Catholic, but figured it was worth a try.

Our last dog, a beautiful Belgian sheepdog, lived her whole long life without having her teeth cleaned.

We've a quote from the vet, it's about $700, and doing web searches, people are saying get it done once a year.

30 Hard question for you pet Hordemates. When do you say good bye? Ol Joe (not the bozo two legged one) is going downhill. Over 15, he's a terrier mix. But after reading up on it, he's ticking a lot of boxes for nearing the end. Eyes clouding up. Diarrhea. Limping from arthritis. Change in odor. Gums and teeth. Non-malignant tumors. Clingy.
I've decided I'm not going to let him linger. But when do I decide?

32 Mr. Gaga, buy a package of beef neck bones and give your dog a raw one at least once a week. There is small amount of meat on them and that will encourage the chewing. I do it for all my dogs and they have never had a dentition problem.

I am sure a lot of that is anesthesia. You could get more quotes. We got our dogs teeth done until I started feeding raw, and as a result, no tarter build up. I don’t have a dog now, but if I get another, I will go the same route. Our cats get a semi raw diet, and I should get Kovu’s teeth done as he has some build up. Savannahs don’t do amazingly well with anesthesia so I am going to try brushing first and hope I survive it.

Heh! Both of my sisters' cats used to sit so close to her fireplace, she thought they were trying to get in it. They'd sit there for hours. They'd also sit in front of it and look pleadingly at her to start a fire, if there wasn't one. They were Persians too, so lots of fur.

42 Ditto Ben Had's suggestion on the raw beef bones. My dogs get one once or even twice a week. They love them, and vet has never said they need their teeth cleaned.

And it keeps them busy if you want to play cards or watch a movie.

45 Afternoon, pet people! Beautiful beastoids today. Tutti Fruitti looks like he can handle anything even at his age. He looks much like my late Chekov's brother Bear. And Sangria and Rooney, well, if the computers are warm, that could explain their regular visits. Miss Linda's late Angelique D. Siberian would climb atop the old CRT monitor and sit drowsing there while Linda played on the computer.

My two are well. Stirling the great black cat sleeps with me every night, at least part of it, I guess, and usually when I nap on the weekends. Dagny La Siberienne is still a standoffish little thing. But if you start petting her while she's on a flat surface, a table or a counter, she will roll over so you can pet her belly. It's not a come-on so she can seize and gnaw on your hand; she really does love that form of attention.

48 Kitten rescue failed last week. The well meaning ladies from the humane society could not locate the nest.

Trying again tomorrow. I bought an infrared camera. It should make finding the nest easier. I am not counting on them using it properly. It wasn't cheap.

52 Diogenes, yes, it is hard to decide. Big Chekov D. Siberian was failing in late '21 and into '22 at age 14. No definite diagnosis, either. He'd rally, and I'd think, okay, maybe he's going to claw his way back to a reasonable life; and then he'd slip back into listlessness, farther back than he was before the rally. Two steps forward, three back. I let him go a little longer than I should have, but he was doing a bit better on meds, etc.

At the last I had a vet come out to the house and see to him. Much less stressful for him; he always hated car trips and having strangers poke at him.

58 Our cats love our double-sided fireplace. Glass sealed side has 2 beds next to the stone and when the fires going they're usually there. The open side has a love seat and chair that one will hang out in if it wants some space the other cat.

59 My 2 pregnant does had been acting very pregnant all week. This morning, I came down about 8 to discover Charlie had given birth to one cute baby. She lost both hers last year and it looks like she might struggle with the nursing thing. Diana, who looked like she was carrying multiple kids went outside the pasture and laid down about 1 when I went inside to eat. I came out about 20 minutes ago to see 2 new kids on the ground and a 3rd in the process of being born. I went inside to get some towels and a box and came out to witness no 4 being born. Moved them inside the goat house and so far they all look healthy and both mama's are being attentive. Pretty cool.

60 Wolfus, I remember following closely your Chekov saga in this blog.

Animals can't tell you what's hurting and how bad and it make it difficult in most cases to make a terminal decision like that. With humans? Well if they are still lucid we don't do that but we do pull the plug with a loved one in a terminal coma.
Of course in Canada they encourage people to go even for a headache.

I decided that it would be when they couldn't walk for themselves anymore.

The only pet I actually had to make that decision for was my last cat. She could still walk, mostly, but she was so anemic that she was constantly staggering and falling over.
And she wasn't eating and all that.

When I took her in... well. She was gone before the vet finished giving her the full dose of sedative.

Probably wouldn't have lasted a more than a few days more on her own anyway.

We live in Alabama so he wouldn’t bother. Hahah. I am fine they are here, I felt the same way with my oldest 2 who are adults. When they are at my house, I know exactly what is going on. And I have always really worked to make sure J’s daughter never felt like she was visiting us, this is her house, too, so in that respect, it’s great. But yeah, they are loud!

I may end up bottle feeding all of them. 4 babies makes it tough to schedule milking and I still haven't seen Charlie's baby nursing. A lot of work feeding them 4 times a day and milking mamas, but in the long run, bottle fed babies are gentler and more manageable on the milk stand.

75 Diogenes, I'm so sorry for your situation. When our 21 year old cat Maisie was failing, I arranged for a vet to come over and put her to sleep, in her own bed, with us all around. Then, my wife cancelled that because she thought Maisie would pull thru. She didn't, she was gone that evening and all the while in pain.
My wife has never admitted she was wrong about that.

Animals can't tell you what's hurting and how bad and it make it difficult in most cases to make a terminal decision like that. With humans? Well if they are still lucid we don't do that but we do pull the plug with a loved one in a terminal coma.
Of course in Canada they encourage people to go even for a headache.

82 Mr Trouble is back after a three day stay at the vets. They cleaned his abscesses and neutered him. He had to wear a cone and I didn't figure I could keep him in. I expected grumpiness but he is like a velcro cat, so happy to see me and in need of pets. He's still a bit wonky, but did go outside for awhile before the rain set in.

88 In Africa we had a purebred Angora cat, as white as can be, and he loved water. The kids were small then and at bath time he would walk along the edge of the tub and eventually fall in. Completely nonplussed. Loved it. We have a golden girl now that will get in the shower.

96 Lucy had kidney issues and thyroid issues and a big lipoma at the base of her tail. Vet said last visit she may have heard a heart murmur.

She's only 10. Makes me so sad.

But. Since we moved upstairs, she eats and drinks more and plays more and chases the laser or the string and attacks invisible goblins.

Do kitties get depressed? I swear she must have been and I did t notice because I was too. Living in the basement is NOT a long term good thing.

Wolf and Chekov certainly did. Wolf early on figured that the last room I'd vacuum was the bathroom, so he'd hole up in there. Chekov never got that, and would hide under furniture and run ahead of the machine as I moved from area to area.

The current cats get up high, atop the couch or on a kitchen counter, and wait until the storm blows over.

The late Marie-Antoinette was never disturbed by the vacuum, not enough to run and hide. Perhaps she figured that since Her Manservant (me) was in charge of it, I would never let it hurt her.

That's the ideal process. I'm still shooting for that one. I'm all for hands off, but 4 babies will tax mama. One of my girls had triplets last year. It was not a good milking year for her. If I bottle feed, I will milk twice a day which makes my schedule more rigid.

131 Our Maine Coon got into a battle royal outside with a feral cat we are assuming. He came limping a bit and we found a bunch of fur outside. A cat has been around and we stopped him from going after it a coupla times, but he watches MMA with me and has been spoiling to protect his 5 acres from it. He's recovering nicely. I did this after we took our sweet Tucker to be put down after a diagnosis of incurable/inoperable cancer. The vet was efficient and kind and we were there for Tucker, but my takeaway was that being on an unfamiliar stainless steel table must have horrific for him, so never again!

We had to take Bailey on her last visit to the vet on Thurs. She loved to ride in the car and loved going to the vet so it wasn't stressful for her.

At 14 she was done for. She had really been struggling since Thanksgiving. A few bad days and then she'd rebound, a fighter. Now however it was time.

RIP Bales, our smiley dog.
