I've said this for going on twenty years now here. Most folks seem to prefer Order over Freedom. Because to have Freedom, you have to accept Chaos.
That catch is, if you prefer Order ... you might not get to pick the form with which its implemented. Posted by: Its Always Been This Way at April 21, 2024 12:05 PM (V5OGA) 12

If you follow crime cases, mostly murder, the cases are quite often solved by tracing not just cell phone data, but car GPS data.
It's going to get harder and harder to go anywhere without a digital trace, and it makes cops' jobs easier. That's how they get in. The straights say "Thank God, they found the body, because the cops used cell phone data." But then when they're using digital tracing to see where you congregate, whose websites you visit online... Yeah. We're not turning back. It's too useful for the powerful. Posted by: BurtTC at April 21, 2024 12:06 PM (YWhxe) 14

Vernor Vinge was a 5 time Hugo winner (back when it still meant something) who caught on to this about 40 years ago. Most famous for "A Fire Upon the Deep" , he just passed away a month ago.
In his futures, mankind would have a brief golden age, where the benefits of instantaneous information about everything to everyone would blossom - but that then tech would quickly move to where everyone was under surveillance every minute of the day by tech too insidious to see. And that all this information would be collected and collated by vast AI systems, since it would be far beyond human capability to manage it. And other than math, actually, you'll find nothing that is not subjective. The colonies didn't, initially, form a nation. And once the crown was sent packing back across the Atlantic, we had Federalists and Anti-Federalists. The Federalists won, in no small part because they swayed Public Opinion through the first domestic media campaign - The Federalist Papers. I would have been an Anti-Federalist. I suspect most of those that got grabbed during the Whiskey Rebellion regretted any initial Federalist views. Posted by: Its Always Been This Way at April 21, 2024 12:20 PM (V5OGA) 42

Posted by: Aetius451AD at April 21, 2024 12:33 PM (di6C2) That's the biggest driver of politics for the last few decades, as I see it. What big bureaucracies are good ? Which ones are evil ? And how do we make more big solutions, that require bureaucracy, to fix the failed bureaucracies ? Supposedly we're mostly capitalists here. Capitalism requires Freedom to allow innovation to allow ventures to succeed. And Freedom to allow ventures to fail to make space for other ventures to have a better chance to succeed. Yet that idea is intolerable to politics. We're all "Too Big To Fail" when it comes to that. The argument is just over who's too big. Freedom ratchet goes one way - maybe not:
Meinecke v. City of Seattle, the court ruled against Seattle in a case involving the arrest of a pro-life protester. ...Meinecke went to an abortion rally and LGBTQ event to read Bible passages. He was abused and assaulted by the protesters, including some identified as Antifa. ...the police demanded that Meinecke stop speaking. ...the protesters stole his bible and assaulted him. ..., the police threatened Meinecke with arrest and then took him into custody for failing to be silenced by the mob. ... ... “If speech provokes wrongful acts on the part of hecklers, the government must deal with those wrongful acts directly; it may not avoid doing so by suppressing the speech.” _9th Court of Appeals The opinion is a major win for free speech at a time when this “indispensable right” is under attack by an array of government, corporate, and academic interests. _J.Turley https://shorturl.at/svxIM Posted by: Braenyard at April 21, 2024 12:44 PM (o1ceo) 111

Concerning flying planes into WTC. I had a friend who was the head of the IED Department at the EOD school. He had an instructor who opined to his class, at some point after the bombing of the WTC, what he would do if he wanted to bring the towers down. It did not involve airplanes btw. But anyway he had put some amount of thought into it.
There happened to be a student from the FBI in his class. A few days later the FBI wanted to talk to the instructor in private for a few hour. After getting fully debriefed on his "plan" they thanked him for his time and said never say that in class again. A coordinated, low-level, physical attack on our distributed data and power networks would bring this country to an incredible level of chaos that would last for weeks.
I have been "lucky" enough to live in two total service outages where I live. One in summer, one in winter. Both for over seven days. It was a life lesson, like Boot Camp, that I wouldn't ever give back. The first one showed me where I wasn't squared away. The second showed me I was. I had neighbors, during both, that started acting sketchy about five days in. Because that's people. If you can seriously just sit down and wait, for thirty days ? I'm convinced I'll like what I find on Day 31. Posted by: Its Always Been This Way at April 21, 2024 01:02 PM (V5OGA) 155

I'm sad to say I was in favor of the Patriot Act when it was enacted. There were editorials in favor of it from conservative authors and in my (no longer) subscription to NR.
I felt at the time the threat of another 9-11 type event was high. I also had an idea that maybe the scales needed to fall from our eyes about terrorism and we needed to be more proactive as opposed to continuing to be angry after the fact and giving the terrorists the benefit of our legal system. No longer. Great post, CBD. I do remember some misgivings about Patriot back then along the lines of, "Well, this is supposed to be all about terrorists who want to kill us. I don't really trust the government not to overreach and hope that Patriot will not morph into a tool to be used against groups like the wiseguys in social clubs on Mulberry Street and the Hells Angels." multiplied by zero and we’d be left with a universe with no numbers.
All digital data 1s and 0s packaged in multiples of two. Therefore the average is 1/2. Which has no meaning. Posted by: DaveA at April 21, 2024 01:48 PM (FhXTo) 226
Oh, Fuck. Biden admin says they are going to place sanctions on an ISRAELI military unit... who supposedly did 'war crimes' before the latest Palestinian terror attack.
So, don't renew sanctions on Iran, but place them on Israel. Posted by: Romeo13 at April 21, 2024 01:49 PM (xaFKb) 227
What pisses me off is when the left gets *exactly* what they want and there is not an ounce of compromise or 'what-about-this' type of argument back. Let's say it was an actual case of national security. Someone set off a dirty bomb somewhere and you have to use geolocation data to sweep 400 million people? Can't there be a panel of judges to approve that sweep? Instead, it's a big, 'Fvck You' to freedom. Instead, 'our guy' comes out of the meeting pale in the face. My idea for Speaker Johnson & the House GOP:
Yesterday, 10 or so J^ Committee DEMs introduced their D.I.S.G.R.A.C.E.D. Act proposal to strip Trump of Secret Service protection if he's convicted of a felony. I suggest that Johnson & the House GOP vote it out of committee & bring it to a full House vote. Re-name it "The Kill Trump" Act. Simultaneously, I suggest the GOP do the same thing with a resolution to provide Secret Service protection to RFK, Jr.-- call it the "Two Assassinations In One Family Are Enough" Act. I suspect most top DEMs today wouldn't mind a bit if both of their irritating opponents were murdered. Posted by: mnw at April 21, 2024 02:05 PM (NLIak) 245

Mousetrap news, Disney Adds Facial Recognition to Parks, August 22, 2022.. Facial Recognition software is being implemented across the Walt Disney World Parks. According to a Disney announcement, the facial recognition software’s primary focus is to understand guest behavior. Disney has set up cameras all around their theme parks and will use this technology to monitor guests, optimize their days at the park, and enhance the Disney World experience now and for the future. They will also use the data they gather to optimize future attractions, dining, and even the traffic flow inside the parks. Their goal is to not spy on guests, but rather use it to make the parks a better guest experience. DailyDot, Movie fan warns the cameras can see you closely, March 5, 2024 ACLU Domentic Drone website In part, "But deployed without proper regulation, drones equipped with facial recognition software, infrared technology, and speakers capable of monitoring personal conversations would cause unprecedented invasions of our privacy rights." Its not Order vs. Chaos, I don't think. That's a Libertarian fallacy. In a society, Order comes before Freedom. Without Virtue as well, there is no Freedom. A Good society is not solely about Freedom. We as Mankind have Fixed Natures at our core, and we have appropriate ends, and non appropriate ends. America is a conquered nation, and our conquerors have their own goals. One of these, my brothers, is to make you feel humiliated. But be not so for in their rituals of humiliation, they only expose their own ugliness and madness, and revolt against reason and Reason's Author. They humiliate themselves. It is just as likely, speaking of the misuse of your data, that some contractor with Booz Allen Hamilton or a company you never heard of gets it in their cabbage patch brain to hunt down every 10,000th person and send them an unpleasant gift. And I don't mean like an unsolicited subscription to Reader's Digest.

Some of the discussion I saw about China rolling out 5G cell service via Huawei technology was that it allowed enough bandwidth to do real-time facial recognition. Adopting Huawei tech would (could) have allowed the PRC to match faces nearly around the world. That discussion dissipated as western 5G carriers started rolling out.
It would still be true that facial recognition via cell service is supported, it just opens the capability to every government, not just China. Posted by: Advo at April 21, 2024 04:54 PM (wQa8l) 255

....By their own acts the Dems have shown that this is *totally legal*--you iz jus' obeying the regime's own orders to keep duh po' snowflakes safe from covid, right? ....Next: want secure text commo? I'll give this away for free: Type your text on your cell phone but don't send. Instead "send" it to an app that encrypts it using a random phrase known to the recipient. What's sent over the cell provider is random letters. ....App on receiver's end uses the pre-arranged key phrase to decrypt. ....GO VIRAL with this, so everyone is using it for normal stuff, and then watch the regime and the FBI and the Dems in congress throw together some Nazi "law" making it illegal to send texts the regime can't read! ....(Yes, there are a couple more twists to make it virtually impossible to break the encryption.)
