Daniel Dennett, one of the few philosophers of the past hundred years worthy of respect, has passed away. (Daily Nous)

You may not agree with everything he said, but he was right more often than wrong, which is a stellar feat in philosophy.

For example:
Postmodernism, the school of "thought" that proclaimed "There are no truths, only interpretations" has largely played itself out in absurdity, but it has left behind a generation of academics in the humanities disabled by their distrust of the very idea of truth and their disrespect for evidence, settling for "conversations" in which nobody is wrong and nothing can be confirmed, only asserted with whatever style you can muster.
He was 82.
Speaking at the Open Source Summit, Linux creator Linus Torvalds shared his thoughts on AI, security, and everything else. (ZDNet)

On the AI question, the most useful thing he sees is that Nvidia now talks to the Linux kernel developers so they can work around hardware bugs.

Other than that, he suggested that AI might actually be useful in 10 years.

No one knows what is going to happen today. In the past there was informal gathering in Golden Gate Park and Haight Ashbury of pot smokers. Then the City organized an official event that got massive with thousands in attendance, traffic jams, huge crowds, medical emergencies, you name it.

The City has thrown up its hands and will not sponsor an officiap event this year. So no one knows what is going to happen today in the Park. We have to pass through Hippie Hill to get to Special Olympics this morning so we will be able to report later today. I expect madness.

14 For years after the 1989 quake no one wanted to live in the Marina because it is all built on landfill. You could get an apartment there very cheaply.

Thirty five years later no one remembers. The City has since required some first floor retro-fitting. But that will not address the fact the ground will not just shake but will turn to mud.

24 when I was about 14 or so, I got up on Sunday morning and went to church by myself. Mon and Dad were sleeping late, and never went to church. Anyway I still remember listening to a sermon about building you house on sand. No idea where in the bible this came from, but that has stuck with me. Now I read that a very expensive airport in Japan built (billions spent) out in the harbor is sinking....Not sure what they can do about it.

But that doesn't fit the narrative the left has instilled into out young people. Of course the sea rises and falls usually twice a day, so you can't say the oceans aren't rising.

Now, they are regularly refreshed with the tides, a rise of maybe 6" in 50 years. Maine's coast is rebounding from the last glaciation. I wonder if the rise happens as a wave and not a balloon inflating.

There is a lot of shale bedrock and huge limestone deposits - as a kid our San Mateo hills house sat on shale - and beyond the backyard was a hill cut exposing massive limestone formation and a large, high quality clay deposit.

And lots of poison oak.

I saw the Benny Johnson video at the closed down In-n-Out. He reported that 1,000 times customers had been robbed while waiting in line in the drive-thru the last year. Shortly later he was robbed.

At one time from Maine to New York City was under a couple thousand feet of solid ice. Imagine a child's teeter-totter with all that weight on one end. Warmer areas as far south as the Chesapeake Bay region rose in response. They as now settling back down, so in that area they blaming ocean rise. As far as Maine, I don't know if it is rising or sinking or staying neutral.

It's an interesting phenomenon.

There is some massive cave somewhere in the world that suddenly got cut off, no longer did light enter it. But there were creatures in it with eyes (I forget now which). But over centuries they still found some way to survive and breed but de-evolution was now making their eyes close shut as they were no longer necessary. Weird and fascinating at the same time.

Actually, it isn't. If you own a gas station, the best way to ensure you'll have repeat business is if your bathrooms are kept immaculate. Buying gas is only one reason - maybe not even the most important - why people stop.

I don't visit them often but the last time I was at a buckees they had two or three full time bathroom employees, and according to the help wanted sign on the pump they were maybe the highest non management jobs at the place.

I really think that it makes perfect sense that the internet is not good for mental health when you think about both mental institutions and religious retreats. On the one hand, you have reduction of stimuli, both incidental and social. On the other, you have not only a massive increase in the amount of stimuli while limiting actual person to person interaction (which would tend to limit extremism), but the internet because of that lack of social person to person interaction actually encourages more and more extreme thinking.
