Cleveland Balloon Disaster Cafe

sycamorecanyonaz.jpg
Sycamore Canyon, Arizona

Paraglider "flaps his wings" to get airborne. It works! (Though he has a lot of wind to work with.)

Baby rhino, frolicking.

Resilience pays.

The Cleveland Balloon disaster of 1996. It's like the saw the Turkey Drop episode of WKRP in Cincinnati and thought, "We can't let Cincinnati win the Stupid Derby."

What did you say to me...?

Meeting a shoebill stork. The rat-a-tat beak clicking is real.

Avalanche, as viewed from the bury zone.

Some kind of Dutch sport.

Claim: Absent air resistance, a bowling ball and a feather will fall at the same speed. Status: Confirmed.

Based on the screams of terror, I'd say he really liked his first bungi jump.

Cannonball!

"The Stairway to Heaven."

Now this is pod-racing! (No it's not. Why do you think everything is pod-racing?)

Got a paint-job for you -- it pays $20,000. There is a catch.

Capybara walking in water.

A sneak peek at "the Pink City," if you know what I mean.

Bug racing.

14 From the bowling ball-feather link: "This is because gravity affects all objects equally regardless of their mass"

This is not true, AFAIK. The gravitational force is proportional to the product of the masses divided by the square of the distance. I think.

Conversely, if you had a mass of feathers that was the same as a bowling ball, then there should be no measured difference. But, with a difference in mass, there should be just a tiny bit more amount of attraction, both ways.

Similarly, the fact that certain equations break down at near-zero and near-infinity amounts is interesting. We have nice formulas like E = MC^2, but then there's "Special Relativity" for these edge cases. Maybe there's a "D" that actually needs to be added or multiplied, but is lost out when you're dealing with distances greater than the width of an atom or whatever?

The 60s were a hard shift to the left. We're there again. We might get things settled down, but we'll be briefly settling down to 2014 or so at best. The overton window where we'll have to live will have been moved far over to the commie/totalitarianism side again. Same as after the |Civil War.

Things are starting to swing back towards sanity. It's not a big shift, yet. Seattle is becoming less looney. Criminals are being held in jail, even minors. The AG who will be out next Governor promised to close all juvenile detention centers. That's not going over well these days.

Well, there "is" a solution, of sorts. We'd end up looking a lot like Bosnia, Sarajevo and all the other shattered bits of Yugoslavia.

And with absolutely no guarantee that the "good guys" win. Odds might look poor, with them being on top of all the comms, n' such.

Still though. A Mass Preference Cascade of Patriotism could set things right in a matter of months. Even, weeks. Still might end up looking like Bosnia, Sarajevo and all the other shattered bits of Yugoslavia.

F = G((m1 * m2)/(r * r))

where

F is the force between the masses
G is the Newtonian constant of gravitation (6.674×10−11 m3⋅kg−1⋅s−2)
m1 is the first mass
m2 is the second mass
r is the distance between the centers of the masses

Every point mass attracts every single other point mass by a force acting along the line intersecting both points.
Here's what the equation is saying in English:

The (Newtonian physics) equation describes how this works, and in English can be read as "The force is proportional to the product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them".

A small clarification - NASA and a LOT of people, including me, refer to Earth-orbiting satellites and the astronauts on-board the Space Station as being in 'zero-gee' and being weightless. It's a simplification. Every astronaut who was ever in Earth orbit was constantly falling towards the center of the Earth due to gravity. Now that I've confused you I'll stop and explain at the MoMe. 221 I think a better term is "microgravity" implying that there is a tiny, if negligible, amount of gravity in play.
Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 19, 2024 09:44 PM

It's not a tiny amount. You can calculate the amount using the Newtonian equation. It's simply that the "downward" vector of gravity attracting you toward the center of the earth is matched by a "horizontal" vector such that by the time you've fallen say 100 feet toward the Earth, you've moved "horizontally" in a direction such that the 100 feet you've 'fallen' is matched by the 'horizontal' vector moving you to a place that (would have been) 100 feet higher, and you're exactly the same distance from the surface of the Earth that you were.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 19, 2024 09:56 PM (a3Q+t)

222 You've got your microgravity, and you've also got the occasional stray atmospheric molecule or three, every few meters along the way.

Those add up to a "micro-drag" to go along with the microgravity.

Condensed: certain satellites, especially Low Earth Orbit ones, need the occasional "re-boost" of velocity in order to maintain their orbits.
