The Morning Report — 4/17/24

totalcontrolbiden.jpg

Good morning, kids. A couple of under-the-radar stories that despite on the surface could be taken as good news items nevertheless underscore the ideologically-driven incompetence and lust for absolute power of the anti-American Democrat-Left that don't necessarily fill me with strength and confidence.

First, yet another story that tells us that the push for EVs is crashing and burning hotter than a Chi-Com lithium battery factory:

Tesla, the most iconic of EV manufacturers, seemed to be avoiding this skid. Unfortunately, the realities of being a niche market with every increasing costs associated with production have caught up with the firm headed by billionaire Elon Musk.

Tesla ill lay off more than 10% of its global workforce, according to a memo sent to employees by CEO Elon Musk. The company’s shares closed down more than 5% on Monday. “As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity,” Musk said in the memo obtained by CNBC. “As part of this effort, we have done a thorough review of the organization and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally,” the memo said.

. . . Furthermore, EV sales continue to decline and other car companies are beginning to make alternative production plans as a result. Until there is a charging infrastructure network that can accommodate the entire American public, an electric grid that can handle capacity, enough natural resources to build models at a moderate price, and technology that doesn’t ignite when it gets wet or won’t start when it gets too cold, this may be the beginning of the end of the road for EV-mania.

Well, except for in the minds of lunatic eco-activists who are pushing their insane “Net Zero 2050” agenda. If we could power cars with their hot air and smugness, then we would be able to run our vehicles forever.

As we discussed with friend and friend of the blog Bob Zimmerman a couple of podcasts ago, we are actually fans of Elon Musk, mostly because SpaceX is a giant thumb in the eye of a the Junta's drive to wipe out independent, free market entrepreneurialism as well as for X/Twitter being perhaps the last large bastion of free speech open to conservative voices of opposition.

As for Tesla, well, EVs are nothing more than souped-up golf carts; status symbols that at present are just not capable of supplanting gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. That assessment is the sane, rational one. And yet, the Junta and the enviro-Marxists persist. Hint: they do so for anything but altruistic reasons.

Hold that for a while as we examine another category entirely, the entertainment industry. The collapse of the movie industry as a whole, with Disney being the prime example, as a result of backlash from ticket buyers and content subscribers against "woke" agitprop strangling golden-egg-laying gooses from the Marvel universe to Star Wars to James Bond and everything in between, should be seen as a lesson to the Bob Igers and Kathleen Kennedys of this world. Should be.

Before answering that question, here's another little bit of schadenfreude to have with your "covfefe":

Left-wing billionaire Jeff Skoll’s woke film studio Participant is reportedly shutting down operations and eliminating most of its staff — the latest victim of Hollywood’s sharp downturn that has seen a bloodbath of layoffs and budget cuts.

Participant, founded in 2004, often financed projects with social justice and globalist themes, including former Vice President Al Gore’s climate change documentary An Inconvenient Truth and its sequel. Other titles include the Obama’s Netflix documentary American Factory and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc RBG. . .

. . . Hollywood’s tectonic shift to streaming entertainment has wreaked havoc with the specialty movie model that depends heavily on theatrical distribution to generate word-of-mouth business and awards-season buzz. Specialty titles that would once have received a theatrical release now almost all end up on streaming platforms in lieu of cinemas.

Participant also experienced a number of high-profile box office flops — including the environmentally themed Dark Waters, starring Mark Ruffalo, and the Matt Damon thriller Stillwater. . . Hollywood studios have been hit hard in the past year, enacting deep budget cuts amid a perfect storm of economic chaos that includes Americans continuing to cancel their cable TV subscriptions, the steep downturn in TV advertising, and streaming losses in the billions of dollars.

For sure, the rise of alternate personal venues from computers to smart phones to streaming services put intense pressure on traditional movie theaters. The COVID lockdowns, rising costs and then skyrocketing costs since the installation of Joey-Sponge Brain-Shits Pants, plus the rejection of the majority of normal Americans of ham-fisted "woke" propaganda is the death knell. Or at least should be. Here to, they still persist.

The question is, why? Why continue to waste billions of dollars producing films and shows or EVs no one wants to see and no one wants to drive? Why take the far and away #1 selling beer in the nation and kill it as well as taint all the other labels of the corporation that brews it?

Elon Musk and Tesla aside, since he is essentially an enemy of the State, the reason is because ideology now trumps sanity. Plus the fact that the corruption that has all but destroyed the American system of government and the Constitution, has crept into the so-called private sector mostly via at least three generations of academic brainwashing.

Considering brainwashed Marxist automatons and power-mad venal tyrants control virtually all of the instrumentalities of government that, because of their lack of ethics, morals, aforementioned lust for power and in-your-face hatred of this nation, people, history and culture as founded, and now their willingness to use it to crush is like insects as can plainly be seen with Donald Trump's show trials among many other things, nothing can force them to slam on the brakes instead of flooring the gas pedal, or potentiometer?, before driving the car into the Grand Canyon.

Even if woke studios go broke, even if EVs are no longer to be made, that does not mean ipso facto that non-woke if not pro-American Judeo-Christian-affirming or plan old normal stories will be made or that a return to the sanity of gasoline powered vehicles is guaranteed.

Quite the opposite. It makes no difference. The bottom line is total control of the citizenry by an all-powerful State. How? By seizing control of "the means of production" and prohibiting alternatives. Any voice that challenges accepted State policy or woke worldviews will be silenced. Total control is the goal. Whether you refuse to purchase an EV because you don't like it, or because you can't even afford one and the strangulation of the internal combustion engine leaves no alternatives, and essentially stranded in place, the end result is the same.

Total control by the State.

Soon the government might shut down your car. [So-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden's new infrastructure gives bureaucrats that power.

You probably didn't hear about that because when media covered it, few mentioned the requirement that by 2026, every American car must "monitor" the driver, determine if he is impaired and, if so, "limit vehicle operation."

. . . The kill switch is just one of several ways the government proposes to control how we drive. California lawmakers want new cars to have a speed governor that prevents you from going more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

That would reduce speeding. But not being able to speed is dangerous, too, says Fix. If "something's coming at you, you have to make an adjustment." New cars will have a special button on the dash. If you suddenly need to speed and manage to find the button when trying to drive out of some bad situation, and it lets you speed for 15 seconds.

For all these new safety devices to work, cars need to spy on drivers. Before I researched this, I didn't realize that they already do. The Mozilla Foundation reports that car makers "Collect things like your age, gender, ethnicity, driver's license number, your purchase history and tendencies." Nissan and Kia "collect information about your sex life."

How? Cars aim video cameras at passengers. Other devices listen to conversations and intercept text messages. Then, says Mozilla, 76% of the car companies "sell your data."

. . . Finally, Biden's infrastructure bill also includes a pilot program to tax you based on how far we drive.

"A mileage charge seems fair," I say to Fix. "You pay for your damage to the road." "Correct," she replies. "But when you start allowing them to do this, they could say, 'We don't want you to buy a firearm.' ... 'We don't want you to go to that destination. So we're not going to let you start your car.' It's about control."

I push back. "They're not controlling me."

"They can," she replies. "Wait until you get a bill for your carbon footprint. 'You're at your maximum for carbon credits. We're not going to let you drive today! Take the train. Take the electric bus.'"

"This is paranoia," I suggest.

"Maybe," says Fix. "But so far, everything that I've said about these things, each step keeps coming through."

"Control" was supposed to be a Janet Jackson song, not a how-to-do-it manual.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson, the alleged sane alternative to Luntz cabana boy Kevin McCarthy and your GOP, Grifting Oleaginous Parasites, just rammed through an extension and probably expansion of FISA. The law aimed at "foreign" terrorists and spies.

Well, since the government we have is the furthest thing from America as founded, those of us who still identify as American-Americans are in point of fact foreigners now. And terrorists. And insurrectionists.

With regards to EV's; the Blue Oval spin-off Ford did for their EV battery development and manufacturing to the tune of over a billion dollars is in trouble. With demand for EV's tanking there's no reason to have massive battery manufacturing plants.

But they've already built a couple. And are trying to figure out what to do about the half built, or yet to be built ones they've committed to.

34 With very little media coverage from even our side Rand Paul has been doggedly investigating Fauci and his minions and their funding of the virus. Yesterday he announced he had uncovered emails from Peter Dazak of EcoHealth Alliance where Dazak claimed his team had 15,000 samples of the virus and over 700 variants stored in the Wuhan lab as the virus was infecting the world.

In a normal world this would be the biggest story in the world. It's barely being covered.

EVs aren’t for everyone in every situation, particularly for those who put on tons of miles and live in an apartment or rural area, but they are far superior for some folks. I live in Dallas and my Tesla can 1) drive me to my office by itself and 2) leaves home and with a full “tank” every day. Much more convenient than hunting for gas near me

I think he built Tesla to show what could be built, but I don't think he expected to make another fortune on it. In fact, until very recently, Tesla's main source of revenue was selling carbon credits to the big three. He also maximized the benefit of taking taxpayer dollars via subsidies on EV.

65 I do a lot of work with fire departments both domestically and around the world and there is no bigger issue right now for them than EVs and lithium ion batteries in general. It is an enormous problem and the truth is nobody has invented a way to safely deal with them when they burn and they burn a lot.

When they burn the most popular way to deal with them is still to pour an enormous amount of water on them to keep them cool. Water won't extinguish them but it can slow thermal runaway. The down side is all of the water poured on the batteries becomes a toxic mess.

If someone wants to buy an EV go for it. But stop lying about what they are. They take an enormous amount of mining of minerals to build and they are an ecological disaster to dispose of. They are the furthest thing from "green".

68 Speaker Johnson has two primary problems, one external the other internal. Nothing he can do about the external problem which is he has a two vote margin and quislings on every side and Mike Gallagher leaving Friday further reducing his margin.

His internal problem is more fundamental: He seems to be stuck in a 2004 mindset. He thinks he has to “do something” and “keep the government operating”…. No no no. His mindset needs to be: I’m not bringing anything to the floor until I get my priorities addressed. Don’t fund anything… call all their bluffs.

101 Eh I like my EV. For city driving it’s great, plugged in overnight, always a full “tabk” in the morning. And it costs me about 1/3 of what the equivalent for gas would be.

It’s a lease so I give no fucks about long term reliability or battery life. And man are there some ridiculously good leases out there on EVs right now. The $7500 fed rebate and whatever your state is giving (california is up to $12,000) almost pay for the entire lease. Plus manufactures are discounting too. Negotiate well and you can drive a $60k car for $300 a month.

102 they're running out of time on killing off the ICE; soon we will start to see EVs showing up in the used car listings for pennies on the dollar because the battery need replacing
---
No, you won't.
There is no used market.
And no salvage value.

You don't repair EVs unless it's minor damage. It gets declared a total loss.

If it's totaled? You can barely give it away for the scrap aluminum price.
Recently saw a totalled Tesla get a $400 bid at salvage auction.
Which tells me:
1) those batteries are way more toxic than they're letting on
2) all those electronics? The screens, the controls, the motors? Worthless as parts.
Replacement of those batteries, the electronics? Costs more than the car is worth. No resale or salvage value.

132 His internal problem is more fundamental: He seems to be stuck in a 2004 mindset. He thinks he has to “do something” and “keep the government operating”…. No no no. His mindset needs to be: I’m not bringing anything to the floor until I get my priorities addressed. Don’t fund anything… call all their bluffs.

How about just a return to regular order instead of omnibus bills?
Every fundraising pitch for the last 20 years has been some variation of "fighting the left."
But not one time have they ever said "no. No, we will not fund that."
As I said yesterday, I don't care that Johnson has only one vote--1 vote is all you need to say "no."

It's not just the myth of Truman that they use as a dodge, but Clinton (even though Rs gained) and Obama (which also saw Rs gain)--but they'll never give up the lie that shutdowns hurt Rs.

138 The Mercedes warranty on batteries is 155k miles or 12 years.

Keep in mind there are never any oil changes or fluid flushes or transmission issues or any of the other repairs maintenance costs of an IC car over these 12 years. Shit I just paid $2500 for routine work on one of my cars recently. Tires, brakes, steering, suspension is about it for an EV.

So even if in 12 years a new battery is needed, you're no worse off than 12 years of constant maintenance expenses.

Our experts found that over five years, the owner of a Tesla Model 3 can expect to spend an estimated $3,115 on maintenance, or $623 annually. That’s slightly higher than many gas-powered competitors. For example, maintenance for the Genesis G70 costs $2,621 over five years.

Accept in no place in the article above does it say or even indicate that he is what he did. In fact, the article quotes Eastman as saying "we" had to get new accounts which unless he believes he's the King of England would indicate that these were indeed joint accounts.

Long before his association with Trump Eastman was a well respected legal scholar and former law clerk to Clarence Thomas. Call me crazy but I somehow doubt he was committing insurance fraud to save a few bucks on his insurance. The simpler explanation is that USAA caved to the woke mob which is all too common these days.

206 Speaking of badly designed vehicles:

I was forced to buy a new car recently, so I picked up a 2021 Honda Accord with 18k miles. My problem is not so much with the digital screen and other nonsensical bells and whistles, but the side mirrors are placed in such a way that if you're short, like me, you can't see to your left or right without moving forward in your seat and trying to see past the passenger seat.

207 I still drive a 96 Ford Ranger almost daily. Fuel and an oil change every 6 to 7,000 miles. $50 for the oil change. That's my current 'cost of ownership.'

You won't be doing that in your EV. Yes.....you lease it. Great. You'll be paying rent on a vehicle for the rest of your days. If that fits you, fine. It doesn't and will never fit me.

Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

226 You have. A magic Ranger I guess, lol.

I’ve never owned a car more than 5/6 years old that didn’t need constant work. Not repairs necessarily but maintenance.

My non -EV cars got $600, 90k mile service last year and a $2000 60k mile service this year. Oil changes are more in the $100-200 range. A fuel pump was replaced for $1000 not long ago. A $300 battery. Air suspension needed work went kaput $700 fix. New tires will be needed soon for one of them, $1200. Every year there’s a couple of items like this per car. They’re German cars and I know that’s part of the deal.

So yeah I’ll happily rent a brand new car for 4-5k a year and never worry about any of this shit.

Seem to recall he was hanging out with Don King in the 80's and was beloved by hiphop stars (pre-political career) because he, too, enjoyed conspicuous displays of wealth. He promoted blacks within his organization, such as Omarosa (I know). He met with Kanye, he pushed to get first-time drug offenders released (or whatever it was that had that drug-dealing grannie released), freed those black basketball players arrested in China, and lifted a lot of black household incomes (along w/other races) with the economic prosperity his policies created.

And that was key to understanding Whitey Herzog. He was able to see the offensive value of defensive players. And he developed that with an extremely aggressive offense.

Our experts found that over five years, the owner of a Tesla Model 3 can expect to spend an estimated $3,115 on maintenance, or $623 annually. That’s slightly higher than many gas-powered competitors. For example, maintenance for the Genesis G70 costs $2,621 over five years.

I wonder how. One of the benefits of an EV is that absent component failure, they should need fairly little maintenance for the first 5-10 years of ownership.

My *guess* is that, if this is accurate, the problem rises from a combination of very expensive wear items (brakes and tires, with EV tires being particularly expensive and regen adding complexity to braking systems) and the price of specialty services like serving the cooling system for the batteries.

I dunno. I wouldn't mind seeing the internals, because it seems like "initial maintenance and servicing" is one of the areas where an EV should win hands-down. The total lifetime cost is not compelling and resale value reflects that, but initially it should be quite good.

For those of us who enjoy sci-fi, the most recent attempt at filming Dune has been admirable. I've seen part 1, but not yet part 2. The real problems occur when beloved books get butchered by directors wanting to push a message (e.g. Starship Troopers, Foundation). For millions of people, Dune was a fascinating story with epic scope. I found the Federalist critique of the movie pompous and fatuous. It's a movie for goodness sake, and one that for once stayed true to the source material.

Barr brings exactly one vote and probably is lying about voting for Trump in the first place. Quite frankly, Barr is a representative of the noxious DC Beltway crowd along with the Mitch McConnells, etc. They only support Trump in public so they can stab him in the back afterwards.

Barr lied about a lot of stuff like Epstein, voter fraud, his role in Ruby Ridge, Inslaw, etc.

He is toxic with GOP voters and not worth being catered to or listened to.

343 Bill Barr is a piece of deep state crap but him say that he will support Trump over Biden is telling. To me this indicates that the "establishment" is coming around to the idea that Biden is such a shit show that even Trump is preferable. 344 I dunno. I wouldn't mind seeing the internals, because it seems like "initial maintenance and servicing" is one of the areas where an EV should win hands-down. The total lifetime cost is not compelling and resale value reflects that, but initially it should be quite good.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 17, 2024 09:24 AM (HnUIn)

You really need a whole electricity management plan to get an EV. 1. make sure you know you nightly E rates. 2. Make sure you use the charger that knows your whole house demand so you dont hit those higher rates.
3. Shop for plans that have very low night rates so that you can both charge and heat/cool house overnight.

Motor regen helps with that a lot. But when the brakes do need servicing, it will be more expensive than a standard brake job. Brake regen systems do add complexity and cost. Motor regen in EVs really helps extend brake life, though, because you don't need to use them nearly as much.

357 With regards to EV's; the Blue Oval spin-off Ford did for their EV battery development and manufacturing to the tune of over a billion dollars is in trouble. With demand for EV's tanking there's no reason to have massive battery manufacturing plants.

But they've already built a couple. And are trying to figure out what to do about the half built, or yet to be built ones they've committed to.
Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 17, 2024 07:57 AM

I think that Ford is counting on the legislation to help it sell batteries. The Blue Oval factory being built in Marshall, Michigan, is supposed to be operation in 2026 - when the requirement starts. (IMHO the battery factory is still a Chinese operation with Ford presenting an American face).

368 After completing a careful analysis of the 1.6 pound object that had crashed through two floors of a house in Florida on March 8, 2024, NASA engineers have confirmed that it came from the cargo pallet that was dumped from ISS in March 2021.

Though the NASA press release notes the agency will revise its computer models for determining what will burn up in the atmosphere and what will not, it says nothing about reinbursing the homeowner, Alejandro Otero, for the damage to his home. Based on the Outer Space Treaty, the U.S. is likely liable for this damage. I suspect the negotiations are on-going, and if Otero doesn’t have a lawyer yet, he should get one immediately.

369 I’ve never owned a car more than 5/6 years old that didn’t need constant work.

If you get by with a 30 year old truck with nothing but oil changes, all the power to you man. I mean it.
Posted by: Montec at April 17, 2024 09:04 AM (tpjlM)

My 2006 Mustang GT has a little over 370,000 miles on it. I do all the oil changes myself, every 3000 miles, 50 bucks a pop. I get over 100,000 miles on brake pads (highway driving), replaced rotors once. Replaced plugs at 200,000 miles, hoses at 300,000. Been a good car.

Posted by: thatcrazyjerseyguy now with twice the crazy at April 17, 2024 10:21 AM (iODuv)

370 The most important reasons why EV sales are soft:
1. US and EU manufacturers are not capable of making ones that they can make money on - except Tesla.
2. Tesla can't market for shit, but has had a product that is so good it doesn't matter, except now it does.

Ps. Self-driving is about to change everything. If you haven't tried it, go for a free demo. Big technical breakthroughs are happening right now, and nobody is in the same league as Tesla.

Great news for school children here in Michigan, where DTE has teamed up with the EPA to purchase thousands of electric buses for the schools. Putting every child who rides in them in danger.

https://bit.ly/3Q4UWKy

They are calling it the "Clean School Bus Program".

https://www.epa.gov/cleanschoolbus

"We are excited to celebrate the Pontiac school district fully electrifying their school bus fleet," said Tony Tomczak, vice president, Electric Sales & Marketing, DTE Energy. "Our fleet advisory service team has been working with the district for more than a year on these grants by analyzing future cost-savings, modeling carbon reduction targets and charging infrastructure design to hook these 40 buses to the grid. This is a great day for Pontiac and our state as we make progress on our shared sustainability goals."

372 Good morning, all, and thank you, J.J.

Speaking of total control, imho gov must work out healthcare, income systems & work permits for the masses as it continues to grow government. For now, it needs 'us' only because there's a fairly set amount of 'contributions,' on which it relies. (As for most gov. employees, contractors, unions, it's not value by job - as many are fairly worthless & tasks duplicated - so much as having a rotating stable of folks who make X amount, are taxed X amount federally, by state &/or locally; pay fees for luxury items, etc.)

Who knows? Under FJB, it could be sooner rather than later.
