14 That back pack stealing video reminds me of an incident that happened to me when I was in Infantry training back in the day. We were on an ambush exercise and I was on the ambushing team. I had a PRC77 radio strapped on my back with the big whip antenna on it. Me and the team leader got up to run and about half way through the trees I was knocked flat on my back. That antenna caught on a tree branch and kicked my a$$.

That can also occur in the U-Joints, or CV joints, or Center-Carrier Bearing if it's a longer, RWD driveshaft.

I'd have all *those* wear points carefully inspected, before Dropping Tran$, right outta the gate.

so when you are coasting, the engine drops back to idle, instead of being driven by the car? sounds like one of the clutches is not holding. Automatic transmissions have "sprag clutches" in them, which are one-way clutches that let the engine drive the car, but don't let the car drive the engine. To get engine braking, usually there is a hydraulically-applied multi-disc clutch that applies one the sprag has done its thing.

I'm not sure how it's designed, but I've seen motor mounts degrade, allowing the engine to shift a bit with braking momentum and then shifting back in place under acceleration.

If it's at speed this is likely not the primary culprit. Good luck.

184 Don, my Ford Ranger with manual transmission would make clunking noises, when it started out and a bell like chime when I let out the clutch in traffic. In my case it was the front hubs that needed replacing because they were turning into broken metal, and the cv and drive shaft because it had leaked and started seizing. Take it to a shop for a review.

I had an '02 F 150 for a while. The direct-drive clutch in it was gone, so I got the truck cheap. Tore the transmission down, replaced the clutches and an internal hub. $2000 in parts! But I fixed it. If it's your forever vehicle, I think a remanufactured transmission from a reputable builder, with a good warranty, would be your best bet. Reputable rebuilders will build trannys with upgrades made to parts that were known to fail, meaning they can be better than OEM new. Or you can order a beefed-up transmission, that might cost only a few hundred dollars more than a basic one, but be potentially a lot more durable.

If it ultimately is the transmission and this really is your forever truck, just get a remanned transmission and have a little piece of mind and a warranty.

The just poking around and a remanned F150 tranny can be had for less than 2k. add another 500 to 1k for installation.

The inherent problem though is for a truck this old, many of the drive line and other components are more than likely either going to have to be replaced as well.

I've pretty much replaced most of a 2005 Chevy Colorado, it's essentially a new truck sans the engine and transmission and if either of them goes, I'm going to replace it with an LS Engine

Don, if there is a 4X4 specialty shop in your area, ask them to quote you on a mildly-modified version of your stock tranny. Just "built" enough to be durable for 20 more years.

226 Well, the truck has been driven gently since the 20K mark when I bought it in '06. It was never a commuter. I did some long drives and 4-wheeling out west for a couple years after that, but no more.

This is good advice. I got the same sort of spread on prices, anywhere from 1600 to 5500 dollars. Replace all the U-joints and hanger bearings (if used) while in there, and reseal the transfer case.

Yeah, if you're already doing the tranny, knock some other things out. It'll add cost, but overall you'll be better off.

The thing that makes a car feel old is that everything gets worn out and a twenty year old car can be looked at as 72 in human years, not quite dead but not a spring chicken either.

237 That clunk might not even be the transmission, as noted. Definitely worth a basic driveline diagnosis, if you can trust your mechanic at all. I'm suspicious of the driveshaft and its mountings. Piece of cake compared to trans plant.

239 I've always wanted to dabble in modular synthesis, I was watching a performance on YouTube, this guy had a 6RU eurorack rig, which is a fairly standard setup, did a quick calculation of the modules he had and it was roughly 12K dollars worth of modules.
So DeadMaus's wall of modules is easily a couple hundred grand.

For a store, a warehouse, or a distribution center? That's nuts. If it's a center they must have serious staffing problems. We get most of our beverage deliveries at night or very early morning (supermarket) and they're out of there in usually less than an hour.
Confession: I absolutely despise all our vendor staff. I hate those guys. I don't know where they find them and/or why they hire them. The former guy was terrific, organized, decent, smart. Now it's a pack of moronic dimwits who can't even wear proper clothing. Showing up in boogie shorts and flip-flops. And their staging area looks like the aftermath of an earthquake.
