80 Background, so more than him having an R.C. client/patron...

This picture, made at a moment when public celebrations of the Mass were forbidden in the Dutch Republic, draws on the complex language of allegory to depict the triumph of the Catholic Church. A woman, representing the church itself, places one foot atop a globe, while, in the foreground, the cornerstone of the church crushes the serpent of evil. Vermeer converted to Catholicism before his marriage, and this painting, which includes a table laden with chalice, missal, and crucifix, may also refer to the celebration of the Mass in "hidden churches" within private homes. The Crucifixion scene in the background is based on a painting in Vermeer’s collection by the Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens.

So when you find somebody you keep
Think of me and celebrate

Be the light in my eyes
And if I say ten Hail Mary's
Leave a light on in Heaven for me...

93 This one is chock full of symbolism. There's a dead snake on the floor, crushed by a stone. An apple with a bite out of it lies near it. Both represent original sin and the dead snake recalls the prophecy in Genesis of his crushed head. The scene of the Crucifixion in the background then becomes the redemption of Sin. The woman might represent the Church, maybe? Her foot is on a globe of the cosmos and she leans on an altar in a state of relief/ecstasy/worship. The glass ball is interesting. A symbol of reflection? Reflect on your life?

97 Portrayal of globes in Vermeer's paintings
Scholars have argued that the globes depicted in celebrated 17th-century painter Johannes Vermeer's 1668 The Astronomer and 1669 The Geographer were based on a pair of globes by Hondius.[11] Close inspection of these two globes reveals striking similarities to a pair of globes made in 1618 by Hondius. The globes were made as pendants, one depicting the earth while the other depicted the constellations. In Vermeer's The Astronomer the scholar consults a version of Hondius' celestial globe and in The Geographer Hondius' terrestrial globe can be seen placed atop the back cabinet. A version of Hondius' celestial globe can be found in the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam and the terrestrial globe can be found in The Hispanic Society Museum & Library in New York City.

The woman might represent the Church, maybe? Her foot is on a globe of the cosmos and she leans on an altar in a state of relief/ecstasy/worship. The glass ball is interesting. A symbol of reflection? Reflect on your life?

Hello nurse. You've reminded me of one of my many burning questions. Not very long ago, my husband took possession of a number of odd and ends that no one had claimed when his mother was moved into assisted living.

Among these things were 2 or 3 Rosarys(ies?) that belonged to his grandmother.

I think they're beautiful. But I'm not Catholic (and it seems that the religion lost a lot of influence in his family after his mother divorced in the 80s). Although one of my sisters-in-law is Catholic, she didn't keep them although I'm sure she had the opportunity.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do with these? Would someone buy them? Should I give them to a church?

And the "hood" on a car is what we call a convertible top. "Wellies" is short for "Wellingtons." I think that's also a term, maybe in Australia, for what we call roper boots: fairly-low-heeled cowboy-type boots with a portion above the ankle lower than the classic cowboy item.

Though I recall, back in the '70s, thong sandals were known here as "flip-flops" too.

132 Democrats keep control of the Michigan house after key special elections. Two seats. One was strong Dem, and it went 95-4. Yes, a 91 point win. The other is a swing district and the Dem won 60-38. This was a district that Trump won in 2016.

Dems won by 91 points!!! Holy Cannoli!!! If this keeps up, we may have a really great November!

As a Michigander I'm relieved and very happy. Getting ready for Big Gretch to make a run in '28...no matter the outcome of this election I think she's the Dem front runner 4 years from now. She's formidable.

I love Gavin, but will California be cleaned up by then? Kamala would make a kick-ass president; Gretch may be the one!

The post-Trump Republican party is not going to be pretty folks. More likely that the party will go away forever.

These were low voter turnout elections, but darned if they weren’t huge Dem wins. It’s special election after special election of Dems outperforming the polls and previous elections. If the roles were reversed it would be media doom and gloom for Biden and Dems 24/7. There’s a Blue Wave coming, and no one is talking about it.

Insty highlighted an Ann Althouse post yesterday where she did her thing of highlighting well-received comments at The NYT about a topic. This was about the NPR fiasco.

The top comments at NYT were all about how NPR had become terrible because of the knee-jerk progressivism. DU, in contrast, was criticizing NPR for being "just center left of center right".

DU is EXTREMELY left.

The political/media/gentry class in this country is united against the people of the United States and to that end they use race, religion, envy, hatred, and criminals to attack the normies.

If you look at underlying polling, on a substantial number of questions, you get something like 60-80 percent or so agree with sane public policy. But, the uniparty drones do not because quite simply to them dividing people is how to get power and money if you are a thoroughly mediocre and undeserving pos of a person.

My reaction was predictable. I am Catholic, and I thought it was appalling, plain and simple.

Of all the groups our top federal law enforcement agency would write an 11-page document targeting, they picked us. With all of the crime going on in the country, especially in the last few years, the FBI decided we Catholics were the problem.

Yes, Catholic tolerance was re-instituted, briefly. After Virginia re-instituted Anglicanism in the colony, the Puritans there left in a huff and moved to Maryland. They promptly rebelled against the MD colonial government and outlawed Catholic assemblies. The Royal Governor sent an army to rout the Puritans. The Catholics lost at the so-called "Battle of the Severn" and the Puritans cinched down control even further after William of Orange was victorious in the "Glorious Revolution". Ann Althouse: “I don’t like how the Board is conflating the prosecution and the court and the rule of law. The rule of law is an abstraction. Rights exist within the abstraction, but rights can be violated. The abstraction doesn’t guarantee the rights. People exercising power must ensure that those rights are protected, and they may deviously hide behind the abstraction… perhaps with the help of elite onlookers who make abstract pronouncements in print. Trump’s assertion that the prosecution is “unfair and politically motivated” is may be true even if the court carries out its duties perfectly. Trump may be “fortunate to live in a country” that has some dedication to the rule of law, but that doesn’t deprive him of the reason to complain that the prosecution seems politically motivated. Again, even if the court perfectly carries out its obligation to the rule of law, Trump is motivated to cry out about the onerous prosecutions, which are undercutting his ability to campaign for the presidency.”

Last year, I was shocked by how much London has changed since I last went in the 90's.

While there are still nice and historical places of course,

about half of the town seems to be more like a bordertown between a 1st and 3rd world country. Think El Paso and Juarez where El Paso is losing the battle.

I think England is done. Winston Churchill's remarks on islam from the River War are right on the nose.

McDonalds copies as well which is not what I said. Essentially though McDonalds has traditionally done expensive market research before product introductions as well as franchise location but Burger King, not so much. Oligarchic competition like Wendys, McDonalds, and Burger King often have a leader with market share (McDonalds), a follower (Burger King), and an innovator (Wendys).

Johannes Vermeer Dutch
ca. 1670–72
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 614

Looking past much symbolism for a moment, the model seems to have had 'the Marty Feldman eyes.'

But Vermeer had a lot to cover in the beautiful, detailed painting but I attribute some of that to the fact "Vermeer converted to Catholicism before his marriage, and this painting, which includes a table laden with chalice, missal, and crucifix, may also refer to the celebration of the Mass in "hidden churches" within private homes." (Those who convert to a new or different religion, etc. may go a little hog wild, especially in the beginning.)

Vermeer was & remains a treasure but I'd pass hanging. Thank you.
