Yeah, the San Fran thing is sickening. In Pennsylvania business owners have to pay unemployment insurance tax on every employee. The owner must sign and enter his/her social security number.

Why? Because the owner of the business is not allowed to collect unemployment benefits if the business fails - even if he/she has been in business for decades.

    50 Saint for the Day:

Bl. Katarzyna Celestyna Faron (1913-1944) was born in Zabrzez, Poland. At five, she was orphaned and raised relatives. Desiring the religious life, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate in 1930. She served in the community as a kindergarten teacher. After the breakout of World War II she became the leader of her religious house, ran an orphanage . She was eventually arrested by the Gestapo, and sent to Auschwitz. Due to the poor conditions she developed typhoid fever and TB. While on her deathbed she prayed intensely for various intentions on a rosary made of bread. According to witnesses she offered her sufferings for the conversion of a priest who had fallen away from the Church, who did eventually return to the true Faith. Bl. Katarzyn finally died from her illness on Easter morning. She is one of the 108 beatified Polish Catholic Martyrs killed during World War II by Nazi Germany. Her feast day is April 9th.

56 The title is Poverty, by America. In the book, he attributes the persistence of poverty in the U.S. to policy choices. One of the arguments he makes is that anything that has to do with material policy—housing, fiscal policies, and so on—is a zero-sum game. So, if you give tax deductions to the richest, it means lack of tax revenue for public housing policies or any other policies that benefit the poor.

So let us test this theory. The biggest tax cuts since Reagan were in 2017. US tax revenues by year.
    2015 $3,331,685.00
    2016 $3,561,451.00
    2017 $3,760,542.00
    2018 $3,973,974.00

So his premise and theory is proven wrong is just a few minutes.

Posted by: rhennigantx austere religious scholar at April 09, 2024 06:32 AM (ENQN6)

57 "limitarianism" is a euphemism for a segment of control of populations in the same vein as marxism, socialism, communism and all the other means of attaining and keeping the ability of regulating everyday behavior to a desired outcome.`

Once you examine these definitions, the intent becomes painfully clear.

    Always.

Well, we had to upgrade to a third Wild Bird's Unlimited feeder pole system, as it's time to start prepping for the hummingbird arrivals.

And as one knows, one can not simply screw another pole into the ground in any old location and call it 'Good'.

So with careful mathematical precision, we have located the three poles equidistant from each other, and on a straight line across the back of the yard.

Of course you could hear the baby bluebirds raising hell during this time, as the bluebirds didn't have access to the contents of the bluebird feeder tray for a short period of time.

88 Looks like the Baltimore Mayor's race has kicked it up a notch.

Disgraced former Mayor, Shiela Dixon has been endorsed by State's Attorney Ivan Bates, the man that city residents elected over disgraced and convicted former State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

Current mayor Brandon Scott is being endorsed by both Maryland Senators.

And the black residents of Baltimore are getting kinda tired of watching the Democratic party simply shit on them, all while fully expecting them to vote the party line.

Meanwhile, David Trone of Total Wine fame is showing signs of cratering in a race against former Governor Lockdown-Larry Hogan.

1.5 years ago was the incredibly destructive Marshall fire here in CO - over 1k building burned down. Despite the town being built on top of underground coal fires that have been active forever (so never should have been approved for building) the investigation instead blamed Xcel energy, which was then sued.

Guess what happened this week? Very high winds (huge wildfire risk), so Xcel shut down power to 55+k homes and businesses last weekend to prevent fires. And people are PISSED OFF. And they will do this again, so Boulder better get used to it.

98 This is a good summary of why Christianity and DEI are incompatible:

"Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a myth, plain and simple. This ideology is one of the most successful psychological operations ever foisted on the American people. The philosophy of DEI is a lie, in the belief that DEI "centers," to use a woke term, inclusion. Not everyone is included in DEI. Just those who are true believers in the cult.

What is truly at the heart of the conflict with Christian values, though, is the obsession with identity. Christianity, and Christians, must reject race essentialism as just another one of the enemy’s lies. Our identity is indeed not our race – our identity isn’t even where we came from, our personality, our career or our hobbies. Our truest identity is that we were made in God’s image, and loved into being. That’s it. None of the DEI machine can stand if that is admitted, which is why DEI and Christianity are in permanent conflict."

Never saw anything like it in my life. 4 minutes of totality where you could look directly at the sun blocked out. Way darker than I thought it would be. And when it went dark it was like turning a light switch off, it was quick. One of the coolest things I have ever witnessed.

Nice! There are some downsides though. Around here, at least 30% of all kids are below the poverty line. In a few schools, they all are. A group of churches have committed to providing all school-aged kids with new shoes for the fall. That's about 4,000 pair. We are also staffing and keeping the school buildings open during the summer break so that the kids will get something to eat and be in a safe place. That way we can free up Mom and Dad to go to work. These are good kids and families - they are just poor. Tennessee poor. I hadn't seen anything like it, in the US at least, before.

Yes, the larger stores fall under the WARN act which requires notifying the government sixty days prior to closing or mass layoff, so this is aimed directly at the small business owner.

Since this is only a proposal, can a bodega close right before the vote and later reopen if the proposal fails?

At any rate, I would like to know what the definition of a grocery store is so that the business can dial down on those distinctives in preparation.

I especially liked the part where the closing store is expected to organize a co-op. What in hell are schools, community center and tax-paid social workers for? This another responsibility that the government is shirking?

Also, during totality, not only can you take off your glasses and look directly at the sun, it is, in fact, the only way to see anything since the corona is not bright enough to be seen through the glasses.

160 Hee Haw was a great TV show. I have very fond memories of watching with my parents and siblings in the 70s. It had good music and great humor and was a show you could watch with your kids. I loved their regular bits, especially “Pfft you were gone!” and “gloom despair and agony on me. Whoa!!”

Pickin’ and grinnin’ with Buck Owens and Roy Clark was always fun, too. The 70s was a great time to be a kid

    Two things:
    -BLM protests
    -covidiocy

Two events which vaulted YOUR FEELINGS into mortal threats. So, you have those who are actively trying to create problems so they can post it on tiktok. Then you have everyone warily waiting for something bad to happen so they can post it on tiktok. (Tiktok is just a placeholder for social media in general.)

Combine that with purging the unclean from the system and you destroyed experienced employees who were more used to dealing with unruly passengers and had a better and lighter hand of knowing when a threat was coming and being able to diffuse it before the situation got out of hand. Not to mention the passengers from the groups above actively working against any attempt to diffuse a situation.

Something I have been thinking about in response to the Boeing thing. I have had some experience in trying to change a work culture. The thing is, while you have a plan say 'I want to make this site run better and stop the backstabbing and some of the stupid shit.' The easiest way to affect this is to fire the people you see are the problems. But the thing is, when you do that, you are firing an experienced employee who has institutional knowledge. The site will run more poorly (in the short term) because you have eliminated that source of institutional knowledge. You HAVE to prepare for that and try to mitigate the consequences.

COVID firings did not work like that from my eye. They just fired and did not care what they were doing to the culture or were actively, intentionally creating a new culture because they wanted to bring in this or that person- and I think they did not realize what they were doing because they are fucking idiots who are not real managers.

I believe that modern managerial theory views most workers as interchangeable parts. In the tech industry, this manifests in "leadership" deciding to replace US developers with decades of experience with Indian developers, in India, because they're cheaper and it's all the same. This is one of the reasons that tech items are becoming less reliable over time. Eventually it will reach the breaking point and things will get really interesting, really fast.

Barring that, if I were in charge I would make paying taxes more fun:
    1. Combine with lottery - a few lucky taxpayers get all of that year's taxes refunded.
    2. If you pay taxes earlier, you get to pick where your taxes go - at the start of tax season, you can allocate it anywhere - as those slots "fill up" you get fewer choices.

224 I'm not surprised by Francis the Fake's denial of transgenders. I think the Catholic Church is still in trouble for creating castrati for their choirs. I think there is something about castrati not being eligible for the priesthood as well.
Posted by: mustbequantum at April 09, 2024 07:37 AM (MIKMs)

Castrati are not eligible for the priesthood. A man sacrifices to be chaste. It's not a sacrifice if you have had the ability to be fruitful taken from you. And that in no way is meant to disparage those that have been abused in this way.

All I can say is that I could not myself go to Mass not dressed in a coat and tie (and even pants). And at my TLM, nearly every lady wears either a chapel veil or a hat. At a Novus Ordo Mass, I've seen only one or two.

Could well be. This is something that I want to hit again: Culture is part of your massive, unknown system. The more you know, the better you can make it sing.

The key bit I take away from a lot of commie led interventions in systems is that they are intentionally ignorant, label the things they do not understand as racist or counterrevolutionary (which is how 'racist' is being employed now) and smash systems to bits by their actions. Then they wonder why the oil business (say in Venezuela) they took over does not keep laying golden eggs for them. Well, you destroyed the system that actually worked, retard. And you did not replace it with something that DID.

they are literally salting the earth!

on dressing up for flights - I used to in a former life have this wonderful thing called an IATA card. a lot of industries are tangential to travel/leisure and if you were to (in those days, maybe not anymore) fly with one, you got special secret upgrades, BUT you had to "represent" the industry well and that included wearing nicer clothes. If I didn't and someone else from Amex saw me I did catch hell! (also as part of the job you travel a hell of a lot).

Heh. This brings up something interesting. I was raised in a Catholic household, but we went to a VERY liberal church for the first 18 years I was alive. So that was my baseline.

When I hit college, I started both looking around for a church and started doing more research on services historically. Vatican I fascinated me. The Tridentine rite seemed perfect. The Priest facing away from the congregation and LEADING them in prayer, but the focus being on the altar (God) and not the people themselves. There were tons of subtle but noticeable differences.

Note that I am NOT saying one size fits all. We are all trying to serve Him in our own way, and if you find something more comfortable for you, then great. For ME, this was better. More natural and fitting.

And you are right, I doubt God cares. But then, does God need us to worship Him? Does he NEED us to serve him? This is something we are inherently doing for ourselves.

Yesterday, in my zone, it was partly cloudy all morning. Come time for the eclipse the clouds started getting heavier and heavier. By the time it was to ~95% you couldn't see the sun.

And then... right as totality happened... all the clouds disappeared for ~6 minutes. Nice and clear. Got to see everything. Shortly after totality ended the clouds started closing in again.

I don't know who in the area was on God's extra special good list but I'm thankful for them. While I've seen one before, this was the wife's first.

291 I doubt it matters a whole lot what you wear to church. The point is that you're there, not how well dressed you are.

It was the only way my parents could get us to go. They quit making us "dress up" for church. Most people understand that there's limits to how "casual" you can go, but the same holds true for going to the grocery store.

Some people will test the limits. There are always going to be those types. We ignore them because they want to be noticed.

You need a roaring economy to fund a massive change like the switching of the entire energy-base for that. (Lots and lots of nuke energy)

So, maybe the Democrats should've concentrated on that instead of destroying the economy and robbing future generations through unconscionable spending.

Capitalism rewards people that generate goods and services that people want with wealth. Putting a cap on that wealth basically just says that you want to limit how many good and services the most productive among us can generate.

Now the caveat to this is the easiest path to wealth in Soviet America isn't the old capitalist model but instead using government connections to force competition out of your industry.

In one sentence they talk about how one can't change one's sex, that we are body and soul, and transgenderism is an ideology, only then to say "biological sex and the socio-cultural role of sex (gender) can be distinguished but not separated."

They just pointed out that "gender" is an ideology wrapped around heresy. It should be just flatly rejected as UNTRUE. What kind of double-speak are they engaged in?

"Asians come from mostly totalitarian countries," so... receptive to govt lies, etc.

I think it works mostly the opposite way. They're trying to get away from brutal, unelected govts-- even if they're mostly economic refugees. They still wanted out.

Cuban Americans (yes, not Asians, I know), Vietnamese Americans and Korean Americans illustrate that point. They detest their former rulers much more than we do. Many recent Chinese immigrants, too, since the CCP purged Hong Kong of all remaining vestiges of freedom.

418 I recalled that occupying Vanderbilt student who called 911 because she hadn't changed her tampon all day - I saw an ambulance that said "Tampon Emergency Transport."

    It was actually "Tandem"...
