8 New Zealand, for basically all of its history, has had effectively a zero immigration policy, right? Basically, unless you shoveled a great big pile of cash to the government, it was a nice place to visit but you had damn well better not stay.

Which is how most small island nations have always been... right?

16 Big Banks did a polarity shift during the financial crisis of 2008-2010. First they needed bailouts, then they realized that having a favored place in the Borg was better than working for a living.

17 You're a "refugee" from a hostile land, fleeing for safety with your family. Do you:

1) Sneak across the border into a neighboring nation under cover of darkness and hope against hope they don't kick you out

Or

2) leisurely caravan as a huge group in public transportation across an entire continent until you get to the wealthiest nation in the hemisphere, and then demand free room and board so you can kick your heels up and relax after a long day of literal rape and pillage.

89 First the Iranians took diplomats hostage. Classic reason to go to war.

Yet Carter did nothing until Operation Eagle Claw, an ill conceived rescue plan that came apart at its over complicated seams at Desert One because the CIA selected 'covert' air strip was next to a highway. And then an MH-53 amidst the darkness and dust after the abort decision was made collided with an MC-130 Hercules. Eight American warriors died that night in the resulting conflagration.

I don’t know anymore; I’m not sure I can believe what I learned in Econ 101…. I say this because for 45 years since Carter’s presidency I’ve heard conservative economists predict doom and gloom regarding deficits but I’ve noticed: the crash never occurs… the Weimar type hyperinflation never happens. If you look at our debt to GDP ratio it’s not good. Where is the crash? It’s always just around the corner….. yes inflation has been bad under Biden but I don’t see a huge catastrophic Weimar situation so I have a hard time worrying that’s gonna happen

Of course I stayed in a Holiday Inn last night and did not study Econ beyond 101 so what do I know?

A crash will happen. It's not a matter of *if* so much as *when*. Outsourcing and over-shoring our domestic manufacturing capability allowed us to absorb the effects of debt and ZIRP in a global economy. Inflation is a leading indicator that we've lost that ability and it's time to pay the piper.

I discovered Mark Weinstein on youtube a couple of weeks ago, and he makes outstanding points on a vast number of topics. One is that government is stagnant on so many things, and IIRC it's because of this system that has been established in academia (and it's sister government) that doesn't allow disagreement. You have to publicly acknowledge the perfect functioning of the system to advance in the system, and if you don't you're not allowed to progress in the system.

I think that's part of what made Trump (and us) so dangerous. People speaking out about the coming dangers that the system is not accounting for and not set up to account for - and often suppresses or promotes, like illegals - is very dangerous.

Well, dangerous to the system.

For the past forty-five years we have been saved by leaps in technical advance and efficiency. Satellite based farming, AI driven supply chain, almost instantaneous payment systems, democratization of knowledge, robotic assembly lines, fracking for petroleum, GMO foods, cheap and diverse communications, etc.

What is drying up is the availability of cheap energy, cheap money and cheap global labor. Those three things in particular having been hiding the massive regulation, taxation and corruption load that has stymied human flourishing.

Restore cheap energy, reduce regulations a/o execute corrupt politicians/judges, any one of them will put off the inevitable for a decade more.

189 For the past forty-five years we have been saved by leaps in technical advance and efficiency. Satellite based farming, AI driven supply chain, almost instantaneous payment systems, democratization of knowledge, robotic assembly lines, fracking for petroleum, GMO foods, cheap and diverse communications, etc.

-

This is something else Weinstein touched on. He's really worth the listening if you're ever driving or just have time to listen to smart people discuss things.

We haven't really made any significant advances outside of communication in 50 years. Take away the screens from homes and, other than design and paint changes, there is no real way to tell the interior of a modern home from a 1978 home.

We are stagnant, and it's by design.

191 - and often suppresses or promotes, like illegals - is very dangerous.

What is dangerous is not having a willing and able work force and the West has been aborting away that cohort for generations now to the point where the West is well below replacement level.

Importation of "military aged men", or in less inflammatory words: "prime labor candidates" and better potential voters than our domestic crop of AWFLs and Cat Ladies (men just tend to vote for more independence) if channeled correctly, would be a massive boost.

I think, besides the criminals, terrorists and other malefactors coming in, the work ethic possibilities from the invading horde is better than the current crop of emasculated, ill educated, entitled eunuchs that the West currently corners the market on.

196 Re modern economies and debt.
-----
Carmines and Rogoff, economic historians, wrote a book about a decade ago named , "This Time It's Different" which examines financial crises through about one millennia worth of economic data from a variety of countries.

Leftists hated the book as it challenged the Obama spending spree by noting that essentially countries that exceed over 100 percent GDP in debt reach the point where they can never pay it back.

At that point, economies become more unstable and governments either run the printing presses which leads to a big bang (in Argentina's case, multiple failures) or they rely on various legislation to suppress consumer demand and thus reducing inflation. The latter leads to a sour long standing economic slump such as Japan has suffered since the 90's (their debt is now over 300 percent GDP or so). The big bang Weimar hyperinflation is usually shortlived ending in a massive bust but some societies return to it repeatedly which essentially destroys that country's future.

Analysis becomes weird when you add in reserve currency status and financialization of the economy along with massive shifts of global population and trade.

I think I found the answer. The pneumonia PAX vaccine my wife was administered in early 2020 had a warning that one of the side effects was 'hostility'. Assuming initial animal testing was performed on rats - which will bare their teeth when hostile - that is where that initial determination was made. Now, after years of being administered to humans, it is now no longer listed as a side effect.

There's something rotten in Denmark.

Addendum from something else I remember discussed: AI is going to change the workforce like nothing we've ever seen, removing the "labor" variable from many of our formulas. And no one is really discussing it to any great extent* or forming any new economic theories. Adam Smith wouldn't be hanging around doing nothing. Neither would Marx.

But we're just going to wait and see what happens because YOLO, I guess. The system doesn't allow people to work in ways that go against the system, and the system doesn't want the discussion.

We are now paying more in interest than we are paying for national defense. This is what killed the Soviet Union. Yes, Reagan helped by keeping the pressure on but it was unsustainable debt that was the real downfall.

There is no way out of this without significant cuts in spending in a drastic way. Raising taxes is not going to get it done. The hangover is coming and it will be ugly.

We should always remember it is people that do bad things using institutions to do them rather than institutions thinking up and doing bad things. The top leadership thinks much differently and try to leverage their individual power and lusts by using the regular employees in those institutions to do bad things in the name of the institution.

That is why propping up 'institutions' by acting like a cat covering its shit in a box, is essentially a get out of jail free card for the leaders that did the horrendous shit in the first place. They either rely on "Mistakes were made" or actually shift blame to the drones in the organization in some cases. Asphalt shingles are an idea whose time has past. Large amounts of waste, fragile, and it has run up insurance costs by being essentially something people rely upon to replace when leaking.

Metal is actually a far superior roofing system and the metal in them can be recycled.

It wasn’t until 2020 that America saw a wave of nearly 100 statues dedicated to the Confederacy come down. Just last October, a statue of Robert E. Lee wasn’t just removed, it was melted down.

I was watching only TV news last week.

IIRC it was NBC that had a two or so minute segment on one of their big-time national news 6pm or so multi-million dollar shows that was discussing the anti-gay law in Uganda.

And that was exactly how it was reported. Two to three minutes of anti-gay this, anti-gay that, gay people can be put to death for "aggravated homosexuality", interviewing gay people about how scared they were, etc. Nowhere did it mention what that meant in Uganda.

I watched the entire section in awe, and when it was over I asked the people I was with if they knew "aggravated homosexuality" meant raping children and mentally handicapped people.

Not a single one of the four other people in the room had any idea. Only that Uganda hated gay people.

Don't assume that we will be a unitary state. There are actually quite a few state governments that are competent but then the problem will be the desperate blues trying to invade the red states either directly via war or indirectly via immigration.

Essentially the large scale of today's empires like the US, China, Russia, EU, Brazil, etc. do not 'work' as empires due to lack of homogeneity fail much quicker historically than individual nation states do. We are not a nation state and have not been since probably the 1970's.

338 Big Banks did a polarity shift during the financial crisis of 2008-2010. First they needed bailouts, then they realized that having a favored place in the Borg was better than working for a living.

Oh, it gets even better. Rather than having a government "Bail Out", the FED has given them a "Bail In". You may be asking "What the hell is a 'Bail In'?". You aren't going to like the answer. If a bank starts failing a "Bail In" allows them to seize all of the depositor's funds to fix its liquidity problems. See Banks are too big to fail, but us peasants are just the right size to fail. When you deposit money in a bank, you are actually loaning the bank your money, and you are an unsecured creditor. "But what about the FDIC?" You mean that organization that has no money? That FDIC?

The FDIC is a dead letter. It has no power and no practical meaning in today's banking world. 403 Good f**king job Ari, having convicted attorney Michael Avenatti tell us why he thinks the "Hush money case" doesn't have any substance. "He may get convicted, but it won't hold". What a joke Avenatti is, and frankly so is Ari giving this jerk airtime. Avenatti is unethical saying Stormy Daniels is a liar. That was his client. WTF is he calling his former client a liar.

If Avenatti hasn't been disbarred, he should be for what he is saying about his former client Stormy Daniels. He is trying to normalize these jackasses, as if the right wing media doesn't do enough of that.

Disgusting, and Ari is trying to justify Avenatti a legitimate person, while Avenatti is pushing that Bragg is trying to disenfranchise the "people" who support trump in an election. To think that it wasn’t that long ago that folks on DU were Avenatti’s biggest fans.

Some here thought he was presidental material. There are RFK jr fans here also. Look what happened in 2016, a couple of celebrities come out and say "there was no difference between trump and Hillary", and like Pavlov's dog, they have no problem embracing that idiotic view.

:: headdesk ::

Good grief, what a bunch of idiots. And they clearly don't understand what the CPI is, or how little the chance is that prices ever go lower. It isn't hard to find out. The Minneapolis Fed has a good description of it, along with the historical data.

To find the last *negative* number in the CPI, you have to go back to 2009, which came in at -0.4%. Before that, the last negative number was all the way back in 1955, and the last time it was negative by a full percentage point or better was 1949 as reconversion more or less finished up.

So c'mon, CNBC. Tell the truth. It's never been this high, but it's also never going to go down.

It is also a clear example of printed money (CV bucks, Inflation Reduction Act, etc) buying the same goods and services with more newly minted dollars.

2. Pay off or default on debt, without issuing new debt to replace it

Deflation can and does happen, and it is usually credit-led.

476 So the mystery deepens with voter registrations in Texas.

The SSA is saying, since the start of the year, that around a quarter of a million people are registering to vote in Texas every two weeks, with a roughly a quarter of those registrations coming back as dead people or at least the SSN being used to register are dead, but the Texas SOS just issued a statement saying that Texas to date has only added 57k people to their voter rolls this year.

So the question is what's going on and who's lying?

479 In 1964 a dime had, let me check, $0.10 worth of silver in it. That same dime now has approximately $2.00 worth of silver in it. So the dollar has been inflated by a factor of approximately 20:1 in the past 60 years.

half a glass of champagne

ounce of raspberry juice

2) Is an abandoned book always the property of the person who abandoned it and didn't want it?

Also I'm still assuming it was on purpose and a cry for help. Same as their abused son.
