Gun Thread: Wacky Solar Eclipse Edition!

040724 eclipse 2 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Flaming Ecliptic Shitballs! Are you going to watch the solar eclipse tomorrow? Will you be near home or are you traveling to see it? Perhaps most importantly, is it simply a celestial event or rather an evil omen bringing death, destruction and disasters? Should the eclipse in fact portend great misery and suffering, what precautions are you taking??

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Homework Review

So last week we had a homework assignment, which was to watch a short video on a concealed carry encounter between two drivers at an airport. The video is below in case you missed it last week.

Did you do the homework? Hmmmm?

Synopsis
Two guys, Cab Guy and Gun Guy are driving around at an airport when a traffic fracas occurs. Gun Guy says Cab Guy cut him off and stopped blocking the lane in an aggressive or threatening manner. That's when Cop Guy gets involved. Cab Guy claims Gun Guy brandished a firearm during the encounter, while Gun Guy claims he only waved a cased weapon at Cab Guy. Cop Guy asks Cab Guy to describe the weapon which he explains was a black pistol, and that's what was eventually found to be in the case. Throughout the encounter, Gun Guy insists the weapon was a cased the entire time, and Cab Guy insists he saw a gun. Gun Guy tells Cop Guy he thinks the way Cab Guy blocked his travel lane suggested the encounter might escalate further, and waved the cased weapon to deter Cab Guy. Ultimately Gun Guy is cuffed and hauled off to jail. With me so far?

Rules for Discussion
I hate to include this since 99.8% of all y'all are cool, but for the remaining .2%; feel free to offer your opinion on the encounter in the video, but keep in mind that it is only your opinion. If you disagree with someone, do so politely and respectfully. If you are unsure what politely and respectfully mean, either err on the side of extreme niceness or keep your opinion to yourself.

Q: Weasel, are you kidding? Can't we behave like assholes to one another?
A: Please, and I'm asking nicely to set a good example, do not.

Points for Discussion
- Was Gun Guy in the right, or a complete retard?
- Was Cab Guy a retard, or completely blameless?
- How about Cop Guy, was the decision to make an arrest justified?
- Should waving a pistol case or pistol rug be considered brandishing?
- Is brandishing a firearm ever a good idea?

Looking forward to a polite and respectful discussion in the comments.

Fundamentals Review
Did you really think I wasn't going to include fundamentals? For week three, let's review the topics we have covered so far, stance and grip.

First we have shooting stance

Next we have shooting grip

Finally, Stance and Grip!

Cigar of the Week

040724 rhomb The Judge 3 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the My Father The Judge

The cigar company known as My Father is an operation run by Jaime Garcia, and his father, a very prominent Cuban expat cigar figure, Jose "Pepin" Garcia. The son blended a new cigar as a tribute to his father on the sly, but was found out, and when the blend was well received, a new brand was born, named My Father, as that tribute Jaime had intended all along. The father/son pair blends some of the most highly regarded cigars on the market today.

My Father's "The Judge" is a nice looking dark brown stick (in this case the corona gorda size, 5-5/8 X 46). Wrapper is from Ecuador, rest of it from Nicaragua. The burn was even and the draw was a bit tight but OK. I got a smooth earthy richness throughout, with a hint of sweetness recurring. Most rate this cigar as full bodied, but for me it was more medium-full, if on the full end of that category. Overall a very nice cigar. It's not one to burn while doing yard work (or sizing 30-06 brass) - they go for $9, and up, online. But they seem well worth the price.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you very much!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

16 When the guy in the car said he didn't know what kind of gun was in the case, I did not bother watching any further. The guy obviously knew nothing about guns and should not have been "brandishing" it in any way. It was loaded. You should never Brandish a loaded gun. That is pretty much rule number 1.
I didn't need know anything else about the kerfuffle.

17 thanks, again Weasel!

Gun guy was a tool and a fool. Busy airport, one needs to understand things are chaotic and pulling out a gun because you got cut off, no bueno.

I've been in a situation where I thought I might be attacked, but, the gun did not come out. I made sure my weapon was ready to hand but, I darn sure didn't wave it around. Now, had the guy gotten out of his vehicle, yeah, he'd have seen a 1911 and been invited to get back into his vehicle.

"disparity of force, younger fitter guy probably 30 years younger than myself.

21 Great, the week I finally have a range report, there was homework. So, range report first....TRex and I took our new gubs to the range with the MGC, and yes, we had a specific plan. Fundamentals. My agenda was stance, breathing, and trigger control. And for the first time ever, I felt like I belonged at the range. There were some strays (one even found its way into the bullseye in a smaller target!) but 95% of my shots wound up in the center target – in the black and in the red. I’ve never had this type of success. And I will admit, it’s addictive. So, our plan is to hit the range at least twice a week. Now I gotta go buy more ammo….

23 Last week: No range visit. Weather was completely horrible. At the last minute, it appeared that there was a brief window of non-horrible weather, but the range was entirely booked for that window. Should have gotten up earlier.

This week: range visit. I now have groups that get past my shame threshold, and am on to the hard work of stopping my bad habits. I know from straight razor shaving that this takes a long time, and it's not something I can practice at home. I never flinch when dry-firing. I will beat this, through sheer dogged persistence.

Complicating this session was that my brand-new pistol malfunctioned after a couple of mags, with the slide frozen about 1/2" short of full return and, I am pretty sure, a round in the chamber. I plan to take it to a professional. Online searches tells me I am far from the first to have this problem with this pistol. Annoying.

34 Gun Guy was an idgit, but the incident serves as a reminder, or object lesson, or whatever you want to call it. I have really worked over the years to control my temper, and there have been times that I have been nearly provoked enough to draw a weapon. Nearly. Until I took a half second to reflect on what a bad idea that would be. It is never worth it unless you are dead certain that you are in physical danger and there is no alternative.

Posted by: Ben Had at April 07, 2024 07:20 PM (R7l+6)

39 I'll bite on the homework.

Gun guy was premature and escalated rather than de-escalated the situation. He was cut off in traffic, but cab guy had not directed a threat towards gun guy. A court would say that gun guy did not have a reasonable belief that he was in danger of bodily harm. A court would look at the context and say that being cut off in traffic at an airport does not warrant deadly force.

Gun guy had the opportunity to de-escalate and withdraw. Better to avoid a gub-related situation altogether than fight about who was right later.

Gun guy lost his credibility when he claimed to wave a bag but not a gun. Seems unlikely that he brandished a gub bag to send a message of deterrence.

Depending on state law, gun guy is legally permitted to have a gub in a bag in his car.

Cab guy likely didn't help things either. He could have diffused the situation. However, in a courtroom, a jury would determine whether he saw a gub or a gub bag but would give him some benefit of the doubt.

A LEO doesn't know whether the intent was road rage or deterrence, but will be skeptical that waving a gun at an airport is a good idea to de-escalate a situation.

47 Range report:

Hit the range to shoot a 500 yard match. Progressive targets, 10" 8" 5" and 2". All were on a bar close enough one could easily hit the wrong target. Shots needed to be made in order, left to right, large to small with points assigned based on hits,. Shoot the sequence then put round on the 2" until the round count limit is reached.

(Only one who showed, which was a bummer because it was fine shooting weather yesterday) Anyway, the I managed to get the wind doped out fairly quickly, But, first shot I put on the 5" target made it go away. Nothing like a "no doubt" impact. The 2" target was a swinger and I hit it square. That thing spun like a top on the cross bar. I managed to hit it 3 out of 4 before I was done. Though, truth be told, one of the hits on the 2" was me missing my first shot at the 5" target.

From there moved out to 1,000 yards. I could hit the 10" but the 5" target at 1,000 yards defeated me. Oh well. Fine day of shooting, though.

How many people buy a compound sliding mitre saw ... and think about if they really should cut that 4x4, on three different planes ?

Seriously. If you feel that things are going to end in you taking an ass beating ? Why not use the gun ? If you drive, day in and out, with no thought about taking an ass beating ? Why have the gun ?

Or just link, wireless, to Andrew Branca. So he can tell you to either take the ass beating, or not.

Lots of 870s at the pawn shops around my area. I already have two that have been handed down to me. My oldest one is from the 1950's and the action is still silky smooth.

Lots of them in the pawn shops look like they have been in an attic for 40 years. Should still be fine guns if not stored in humid conditions.

64 Range(?) report, from Easter:

Really more just plinking in the garden.

We set some water bottles and an empty cracker box across the stream, and took turns testing our ARs. SiL managed to shoot one of the bottles into a tree. And then she shot it out of the tree. That was probably the most exciting part of it.

Of the 12 bottles we set out, four were completely unharmed by the end, and there were not nearly enough holes in the cracker box.

One of these days we might have to spring for proper targets.

87 The cab driver (cab driver!) was not about to carjack the guy in the middle of a busy airport.
The bottom line for me is that you should not carry a gun unless you know how to use it. This guy did not know what kind of gun was in the case. You cannot convince me he had ever been to a range, had any idea what could have happened while waving around a loaded gun. Even if it was inside the case, it could have gone off and injured himself, the cab driver or an innocent bystander. Brandishing, waving around a gun is never NEVER what one should do.

91 Re brandishing: the way I understand it, if you even think the law is going to get involved, you better not show any firearms unless it is clear it is shoot or die. This is even more pronounced anywhere outside a very red rural small town. And the law will try much harder to sink a gun owner than an obvious criminal or thug wannabe. Have the firearm but work harder on looking like "difficult target with not much reward" to discourage attempts and try to not lose your temper at Cab Guy types when carrying

I see this, here, especially. Is this how you do it ? Do you have that tool, next to you, yet go through some protocol where you judge - based upon immediate danger and possible legal outcomes based upon Andrew Branca or your own reading - where the worst outcome is worse than your own internal calculations about possible judgements versus immediate personal danger ?

Or do you just grab hold of the tool, and say "No". We've hit a red line. Regardless of discussion. We've hit a "No.".

Avoid, avoid, avoid unless your are forced to act but removing yourself from a situation is always in your best interest. Some one cuts you off, get away from them. Some one blows their horn because you made a sudden move, tell them "God Bless" and get away from them. Let the other guy go first even if it's your turn, no big deal.

I got 2 minutes into that video and CCW dude is dead wrong.
I've encountered numerous people who think that a CCW is permission to wave the fucking thing in everyone's face when confronted with normal daily interactions. A lot of them think they are quasi cops too. You usually know they are carrying within 30 seconds of talking to them.
"I've got my CCW!... blah blah blah."
I've carried for 30 odd years and the running total on the number of people who have found that out for wrong reasons is ZERO. Very few of my friends know. I simply don't talk about it. I'm glad I have never had to pull and hope it stays that way forever.
Damn sure never going to try and win a traffic spat with it.

112 I thought Gun Guy used very poor judgment and found his claim to have displayed the cased pistol not credible. Being cut off and blocked is potentially an issue, although it seems like something that could happen at an airport very easily. If it was a threat, Gun Guy was at the wheel of a very devastating weapon. Much better to sit there and wait and see. No problem having the pistol handy, although as others have pointed out, Gun Guy didn't even know what kind of pistol it was. It seems unlikely that he would be able to put it to good use under pressure. He also seemed to know a lot about how things work at the Tarrant County Jail. I'm not sure what to make of that. In any case, he chose poorly. The cops may have done him a favor by way of a Reality Check.

Ummm... - she says, hey, if we get two, that doesn't count against the P226 RXP Legion that you want, we can just get it later. The only issue was my old Olympic 9mm upper which I wanted to run F/A with my Olympic F/A AR lower just did not want to run F/A. It uses a Sten magazine insert and Sten mags which runs fine in semi but no go in F/A. I might have to play around with it buffer wise and see if I am getting a bit of a bolt bounce as the Olympic 9mm bolt is weighted but sure doesn't want to run F/A. I also shot my first Glock ever this week, my friend's Glock 19 Gen 3 with a new trigger and sights. Sweet pistol, may have to get one. Really nice set up and shot well.

Back in my college days, there were some guys who lived in an off campus apartment who cruised around shooting battery operated water guns at cars (which looked like TEC-9s) that cut them off or honked at them. Someone called 911 on them after having an encounter w/ them. An hour later, the guys were back at their apartment yukking things up over some beers when a volley of CS grenades came through their windows, followed by the sheriff's and state police SWAT teams wielding M-16s and MP-5s. Even though the guns weren't real, the DA hit them with multiple charges of assault and battery for their antics. I think they were fortunate to survive the experience without having holes shot in them by SWAT.

140 In my job, I train all the new Drivers in the operation of 14 passenger Transit vans. We cover the Galveston Cruise Ship Terminals, EVERY area hotel, and both Hobby Airport (HOU) and Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

One thing I hammer home to the drivers, is that if someone "cuts you off" in traffic, they're not cutting YOU off, in traffic. In fact, they don't KNOW you, and couldn't give a damn if they did.

What happened, simply, is they mindlessly cut off a WHITE VAN of some kind, and which kind, they haven't a care. Including for the passengers you might be transporting at the time. What they didn't do, is cut YOU off, in traffic.

In other words, Leave Your Ego in the company parking lot, and always remember. Your first responsibility is to the safety of your passengers, and not YOUR tender feelings.

Same when in your private vehicle. The selfish driver just doesn't CARE about YOU, or they wouldn't have been driving according the rules of Asshole 101.

Now, should they go further, and TARGET your vehicle with continued, OVERT aggression, that's a whole 'nuther thing. And even then. De-escalate, Disengage, DETOUR!

So, fellas, let me say, if your wife says let's buy a gun, the answer is yes, right? If she says let's buy two guns, the answer is still yes. If your wife says let's buy THREE guns, well, the answer remains yes.

143 The whole idea of waving a cased pistol is kinda absurd. How does anyone know what it is? "Hey, that guy is waving a box at us. Should we be scared?" Maybe if you threatened the person, "Hey, I've got a gun in this box, so you better watch out!" Which is on the same level as brandishing.

One of the things about carrying (for me) is that I know I'm capable of just ridding my life of any particular a**hole. But I also know (aside from that being wrong, morally) it would just bring down a heap of trouble on my head. And a lot more powerful a**holes would then come visit me. This is not conducive to a pleasant life. I don't like prison food that much, though the time in solitary might be kinda nice for us loners. And, I know that getting into any kind of altercation could bring the firearm into play such that I will be visited by those powerful a**holes. So, it becomes even more important to take a deep breath and contemplate whether any particular problem is worth shooting. And I contemplate other ways to make a**holes suffer for their sociopathy.

150 Howdy, gub 'ettes and 'rons, and a special sun-is-going-away-what-evil-magic-is-this greeting to our host who is never eclipsed, Weasel.

Homework response, written over the past week ...

The guy who brandished the gun is absolutely, unambiguously in the wrong in that situation. What the Uber driver saw or did is irrelevant - the man who got arrested was never at risk of death or serious bodily injury in the eyes of a reasonable observer. Getting cut off or stopped in airport traffic is irritating, and cars can be deadly weapons -- but in no way does this situation seem to justify pulling, displaying, or implying a threat with his gun.

Maybe an unpopular opinion here on the AoSHQ Mothership (where commentors seem to prefer individual freedom, rather than regulation), but -- if one does not have the emotional maturity and self-control to realize that a gun is not the solution to every trivial irritant in life, one should probably not possess nor carry a gun. I hope that most in the gun community are mature enough to self-regulate in this regard, but last week's video proved that's not true.

The RXZP is a full size regular P320 - not an X-Series - that comes equipped with an optic cut slide (obviously) and a Romeo Zero Pro. The RXP models (P320, P226, P229) come with a Romeo One Pro. The Zero Pro is a grown up version of the Zero that they make for the micro's - I have a Zero on my P365 XL. The Zero Pro differs from the One Pro in that the body is polymer rather than aluminum. I learned a LOT about different iterations of the P320. There is much to know.

Our legal system is twisted. I bet that if you did that with an empty box you would still be arrested. That should never happen as it gives credence to the gun grabbers' contention that guns should always be locked up but it's OK to wave a 2x4 or point with a screwdriver.

We took the new to us P320s to the range. I had zeroed the dots with a boresight laser -or so I thought. At the range, this did not seem to work out in practice. And this was a bit bad news - Sig did not include the correct sized allen wrench to adjust the sights. The smaller of the two included I THOUGHT was turning but it did not actually engage the adjustement screws. We burned up a lot of ammo trying to get the dots on target. Well, a bad day shooting is better than a good day at work I guess.

Armed Attorneys had an episode a while back along these lines. It really doesn't pay to advertise on a shirt, a bumper sticker, or a sign that you are willing to use deadly force. If the worst case happens and you end up in front of a jury for a shooting incident, they might just decide that you were not only willing to use a gun, but perhaps EAGER to use it.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing

Some jurisdictions were know to charge CCP holders with brandishing if someone got a peek or if it printed too obviously.

I think historically or 'traditionally' this was not a problem as long as you had a CCP because open carry was 'traditional' but conceiled carry was viewed as something nefarious.
Now we have some odd cases where a state has no-permit conceiled carry but very limited open carry and, depending on jurisdiction, will tag you for brandishing if someone gets an upskirt peek and don't like the hardware.

This is the "never show a gun unless you mean to use it" line. Do you really think, every time you show it, that you'll have to use it ?
Posted by: Practical at April 07, 2024 07:27 PM (npuy0)

If I pull it, I am doing so because the next step will be to use it. In many cases there will be no hesitation between that step and the next. In some cases, the next step will be unnecessary because the bad guy decides it's not worth it. But I do not draw my weapon unless I think it will be necessary. (BTW, this is one argument for things like pepper spray - it's a method to disrupt the escalation so, maybe, you don't have to draw a firearm.)

And, it won't be necessary if there's no threat of "grave bodily harm or death." This is what's key to the idea of "brandishing." Brandishing is when you don't really have that threat against you yet you decide to wave your gun around as a power play to win the argument.

211 40 Does anyone here have any experience with the Beretta Px4 Storm 40 Compact? It is advertised as having a low recoil due to the rotating barrel. The reviews I have seen say it's a good shooter.

Anyone?
Posted by: pawn
========
Pawn,
The PX4 is an excellent and well built firearm with some quirks that some do not like. Unless you obtain a rare police service continuous fire model or the less rare DAO, you have a double action/single action pistol with a safety/decocker. Then it gets a bit funky--you can easily change your DA/SA to a decocker only with no safety (it won't stay down), you can change the large winged safeties which can be quite irritating when carrying for low profile, and so on.

The recoil impulse is different and PX4 due to the rotating barrel have less muzzle rise and it is subsequently easier to keep on your sights in continuous fire. And yes, it does downrate the recoil of a 40 to about that of a 9 in the same size frame. Don't expect it to reduce the recoil of a 40 Compact to a 9mm Service Weight pistol.

If you move fast while Beretta is still making them (their new series is the APX), you can turn one into a race gun.

Ahhh, this is where the "wargaming" comes into your carry routine. This is where you spend time thinking about possible scenarios and how you can react. Guy screaming "Aloha snackbar!" with a machete raised over his head, and he turns and starts toward you... you draw and fire. And you get that sort of "trigger" or "red line" set in your head. (This is how REALLY STUPID people pulling practical jokes get shot.) Guy walks determinedly towards your car while you're at a stop light? Lock the doors, make sure your firearm is accessible, and begin evaluating whether you can escape in traffic. Then the guy turns out to be really insistent that you have a flat tire and he thinks you're going to get hurt - so you can stand down. Or he rears back to smash the window and you escalate by escaping or by firing. Or, just maybe he indicates his ill intent a little earlier, and you can raise your weapon so it can be seen (and aimed at him - you're not doing a display of belligerence, but one of intent).

229 Maybe an unpopular opinion here on the AoSHQ Mothership (where commentors seem to prefer individual freedom, rather than regulation), but -- if one does not have the emotional maturity and self-control to realize that a gun is not the solution to every trivial irritant in life, one should probably not possess nor carry a gun.
======
Nah, you are fine. It is the other SOBs online at various forums, not this the gun thread that would roast you.

Simply put, far too many people do not associate 'rights' with duties in exercising the rights. Basically, the nature of the 2nd Amendment is a negative on government action to prevent one from owning or using a firearm. But, rights become circumscribed when dealing with other individuals. The first amendment does not protect a person from being charged with assault by threatening to kick someone's ass; the second amendment does not protect you from being charged for brandishing aka causing the reasonable apprehension that you might use deadly force of a firearm for a mere traffic argument.

In general, if you cannot control your anger at life's frustrations--guns will not improve your condition and may quite likely make it worse.

The police or the concealed carrier shoots you, same as if it were a real pistol. Or they arrest you for brandishing. Because brandishing isn't "he showed me a gun," it's "he threatened me with a gun." And the law says someone on the muzzle end can't be expected to tell if it's real (or loaded) or not.

"If you move fast while Beretta is still making them (their new series is the APX), you can turn one into a race gun. Posted by: whig"

To explain, you can buy polished and prepped hammer assemblies for the PX4 along with lighter springs that substantially bring down the already smooth initial Double Action shot from a little less than ten pounds down to something around 7-8 lbs for the first shot and the single action second and additional shots are an extremely smooth 4 lbs trigger pull or so.

239 range report - #1 goal was to shoot the Highway Patrolman. Wait, that came out wrong... let me rephrase... to shoot the S&W model 28 that I just bought. But I also took my beloved 1911 and the P365 to try and stay in practice.

I shot the 1911 first and after a couple of flyers, dialed it in to my satisfaction at 7 yards.

The model 28 is beautiful. It's big and heavy but feels *right* in my hands. First 6 shots (starting out with .3 went right down Broadway. I set it down and had a little moment of all the feels, as the kids used to say. I regret not taking a photo of that target, as I lost a little bit of focus after that. It was really happy with the .38 I had. I put 5 rounds of .357 through - the empty chamber definitely helps me catch myself flinching - and had one that didn't go bang the first time. I use .357 very sparingly (and was short on time) so I didn't try again.

I started off spot on with the P365, but started to flinch on the last mag. I guess if the SHTF it's better to be on target with your first shots anyway rather than my usual of "Hey bad guy, can you hold still for a minute til I can get my shit together?"

If you can't even tell me off the top of your head what caliber the weapon is, OR the make, then I have to assume you have so many guns you don't what you're carrying on any particular day or you only have the one gun and you are entirely unfamiliar with it.

I am not a fan of some of the rules about concealed carry out there, actual or proposed. Except one: go get some training, dude. First, on the legalities of carrying a firearm and using it. ANY of the CCW classes would have informed him what he did was a no-no. Second, if you buy ammo for the gun and practice with it, you're going to know what it is and how it operates.

253 11. The Sig "modular system" thing. We have P365s that we got kind of early on. "Grip modules" seemed like just a way for Sig to separate you from your money - they were expensive, like almost the cost of another gun. Didn't seem like much of a benefit to move your FCU to another grip module.

But now it seems Sig and the after market have really gotten with the program. For example, I was looking at a flared magwell for the P320, and they are like $85 plus or minus. But I can get an entire Wilson Combat grip module with a moderately flared magwell and other improvements for just $67.50! Or I can move into the P320 X-Five (which is more of a competition gun) grip module for just over $100.

They have started a whole nother rabbit hole for me to go down....

I understand, I have used the PX4 Compact in 9mm for carry for the last several years. Due to neuropathy dulling the sensations to my fingers, I went to a heavier trigger instead of the lighter striker fired models.

I can't 'feel' a good trigger nowadays so simply aim for smoothness. You get that with the Beretta PX4. And fwiw, it passed an over 100k round NATO firing tests for use as Italy's sidearm.

That puts reliability up with Chuck Taylor's beloved Glock 17 original model that is way up there in round count.

Living in Florida getting cut off is a daily occurrence. People move here from all fricken over. And bring their local (bad) habits with them.
The good ones just slowly change lanes forcing you to slow down or get sideswiped. Hard to get too excited when there's a good chance both of you are armed.

Posted by: Weasel at April 07, 2024 07:57 PM (JwHpX)

Your friendly test guy here to make sure that happens.

But it speaks to a bit of human nature that we often discuss: failure of humans to get causation right.

If black cats portend evil (an "omen"), then you kill all the black cats and no evil befalls you. And the rest of us facepalm and say "That's not how this works!" If you kill all the black cats, then you won't ever see the evil coming - but coming it is, anyway.

Directly to this, a mayor in one of the Upper Midwest states has people asking him to stop the eclipse, because of all the problems it will bring to the town (which is close to the totality track) with all the people coming to visit. Causation is NOT a strong suit of some people in this town.

Now, apply that to things like our homework....

It was really happy with the .38 I had. I put 5 rounds of .357 through - the empty chamber definitely helps me catch myself flinching - and had one that didn't go bang the first time. I use .357 very sparingly (and was short on time) so I didn't try again.

SiD, Great range report. FWIW, you might try some of the heavier bullet loads in 357 Magnum--less bark and flash with same deadly results. Hornady XTP or Winchester Silvertip at 140 gr Or if you can find some, Corbon makes some dandy 100 gr Powr'ball and 110 gr hollow point ammo that is light recoiling, not as noisy but blasts off in a 4 inch barrel to around 1500-1600fps. Very accurate ammo--almost laserlike.

I load for my own 357's and I usually use Titegroup and aim for around 1250-1300 fps instead of the bleeding edge bark and bite of the 125 gr. Hollow Point defense ammo.

Both Sig and Beretta had problems with their 22 pistols and that was primarily a chamber issue with some American ammo (CCI Stingers are one of them but others can be an issue). There are actually two different 22 LR chambers floating around out there that have different specs. One is a match type and I think the other is called sporting chamber or something like that.

With your Neon, try plain ole ugly and dirty Remington Thunderbolt and it just might do fine.

346 I bought the cheapest .357 I found on PSA - it is Armscor 158 gr.
Posted by: screaming in digital
=====
The 357 really begins to shine longer than 5 inches. Try the Winchester Silvertip Defense 145 Grain or the Hornady Critical Duty 135 Grain Hornady FlexLock Polymer for self defense. A bit over a dollar a round but excellent.

158 gr bullets were the original load for the 357 Magnum but police found it over penetrated and did not perform as well as they liked and it has substantial recoil. Does well for hunting purposes though or even heavier to the 180 gr bullets.

Police switched to the 125 gr Semi jacketed hollow points and hit the speed pedal to where these are blasting out at about 1450-1500 fps with a lot of muzzle blast. This is what made the 357's rep in cop circles for stopping criminals but it was hard on the guns back then.

The midweights have the right combination at 135-140 or so at a bit less speed for self defense.
Corbon is worth a call too. They went through an ownership change but for the NJ peeps, the Powrball complies with NJ ban on hollowpoints. Their lightweight 357 at 110 grain is close to what the old Treasury Dept. 38 Spc ++ was.

350 Simply put, far too many people do not associate 'rights' with duties in exercising the rights.
Posted by: whig at April 07, 2024 08:43 PM (G0ieF)

They want license, not freedom.
And these duties (responsibilities) are not "infringements" but the sort of thing that are part of living with other people. I can brandish my gun all I want if the only potential threats I have to deal with are bears and moose (fat lot of good it will do me). But we handle life in a certain way because we live among other people - and that applies to our freedoms, too.

And, I think everyone here understands that - even the ones who get a bit ... brash in their talk.

Going back and doing concentricity, neck thickness, etc. Then going to start doing some load ladders . Shot a bunch of 150s today, but without optics it was just going for hitting steel at distance.
Still, I’m getting used to the AR10 platform. Comfortable, but the ability to just keep shooting is going to be expensive. But that’s why we reload!

My AR10 was built just prior to my health downturn 4-5 years ago and haven't got the wring it out much. Had to get RCBS Small Base Dies though for reloading 308 and case life is a bit of a worry right now due that that fact.

The small base dies made it much easier on reloading 5.56 range brass when I was firing a lot of that. I always hated the ex military brass floating around that was fired through SAWs as they tended to blow out the cases a bit.

Good thought on the cleaning and maintenance classes. Gun folks are friendly folks aside from a few sour ones at gunstores or ranges from time to time. As my health went south, I spent more time with docs just trying to keep working during the last ten years so pretty much put me outside the shooting community. I am a FAFO guy on the occasion this happened to me -
First Time - The previous round was a squib and barely made it past freebore and blocked the next round from chambering and at a point in the action where it didn't want to be ejected... dropped the mag and at home could put more force to eject (with barrel up and away... range rules barrels downrange at all times..). Once round was ejected and gun broken down I could see the squib and dropped a cleaning rod in and tapped it out.
Second Time - Light reloads with stiff recoil spring. Overall length was a bit long so some engagement of rifling keep the slide from closing. Forward assist worked here.

Take it to a smith... if you don't want to FAFO.

404 306 Anyone in Ohio know Vance Outdoors? I ordered a bunch of 30 SC ammo from them bc it was really cheap and now their website is down and I'm getting worried.

I bought a revolver from them a few years back. As far as I know they are a solid company. Probably just coincidence.

405 Gun guy was very foolish. He carries a gun but does not know the law. That makes for a night in jail.

406 Bottom Line Up Front: Driver was wrong six ways from Sunday, should have just driven away.....As for the "description" of the firearm, it was black, so pretty much like 99.9% of all firearms?, so, I really couldn't take that as reliable eyewitness account...Life lesson, don't be an asshole...

407 1) Gun Guy is an idiot.

2) Stuck eject/chambering? Drop mag. Jam something in the weapon so it cannot come into battery and get it to a smith. The bad news is driving around with a loaded weapon on the way to the smith can get you in trouble w/o a ccw permit.
