I experienced something very similar to this, only-
we somehow miraculously stayed upright, landed perfectly, and floated peaceful downstream.
Unfortunately, the canoe behind us tipped, broke in half and one of the guys almost drowned by being caught in the revolving water flow just below the water fall.
We were luck we could get a rope to him before he drowned.

LOL! This literally happened to me. Well, something very similar.
I was a teenager when my mom's Kitchen-Aid mixer finally broke. We were out running errands, one of which was "replace the mixer." We went to buy it and it was, of course, expensive.
When it rang up, the clerk - a girl a bit older than me, so either a *very* young Xer or a leading-edge Millennial - commented that it was a lot of money for a mixer. My mom replied, "it is, but the last one worked well for 35 years, so it's worth the money." The girl's eyes widened and she said, "I didn't know they even *had* mixers 35 years ago."
I was dumbfounded.

I saw a story about a woman that fed a particular crow every day. She lost a ring down a steep drop near her house and couldn't get it and the next day when she went to feed the crow it had her ring. True? No idea but there have been cases of some animals do this sort of thing.
Heck at one point I was feeding a squirrel and one day it brought me a toadstool (nice thought but...no thanks)

Usually. I just gave that advice to someone very recently.
Some IVR systems simply refuse to permit it. Hit zero, give bad input, demand an agent to the voice-recognition robot, whatever. Some systems just have no "last resort" live-answer queue.
Businesses that implement those systems hate their customers more than most.

Yeah. Long gone are the days of "if you want good gas mileage, get a manual" and with CAFE, automatics are sort of needed at this point to squeeze out the fuel economy requirements. And if you're a city-dweller stuck in rush hour, manuals are a pain in the ass.

Tribute bands are a great way to enjoy the music of a band / artist at a tremendous value. They put in an outstanding effort to sound like the original performers, and they tend to adhere to the "shut up and sing" approach. Sometimes you can see multiple bands for a very reasonable price.
Last year I saw a double bill -- Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam tribute bands back to back for $25 at a very small venue. They were both amazing, and I didn't have to pay a ton of money to be far away from the stage and listen to a bunch of douchebaggery coming out of Eddie Vedder's mouth.

Yeah. Long gone are the days of "if you want good gas mileage, get a manual" and with CAFE, automatics are sort of needed at this point to squeeze out the fuel economy requirements. And if you're a city-dweller stuck in rush hour, manuals are a pain in the ass.
They're not going away, but they're essentially niche and are likely to stay that way.

This is why I have not given up on my truck. The superiority of the manual transmission can't be beat. Even in city driving, I would much rather have the stick. It WILL move at the exact moment I TELL it to move. Try that with an automatic.

Modern automatics are quite responsive. I don't really have a complaint on that front.
For me, the downside is that modern automatics are very complicated and therefore very expensive to service and you'd better be ready for *serious* pain if one of 'em has to be replaced.

Same here with my old Beetle. Problem was I lived in NYC and trying to find a parking space on a corner and preferably on a slight hill was not easy.
There was another issue too. Parking a small car on a corner in any city is an invitation for someone to push your car into the intersection and then steal your parking space. Happened more than once. Ha!

Easier to just buy a rebuilt one with a warranty than trying to sort through them unless you are AOP. Much cheaper on labor and time to simply swap units.

Hmmm. This hasn't been my experience. They tend to hesitate when starting at, say, the light turning green.
Also, my biggest pet peeve when driving is people who do not know how to enter a highway. In my truck, I use the tach and keep the truck typically at third gear to match highway speed rapidly. I don't play around on an on ramp. Nothing pisses me off more than people who are hesitant there, or worse, stop on the on ramp.

My problem is houseflies in the attic. I have no idea where they're coming from. I suspect there may be something dead in the little storage spaces under the eaves, so I've got to mask / glove up and go searching. Right now I have fly paper all over the place.
I wouldn't particularly care, except the attic is my home office / writing den, and so I need it to be vermin-free.

Nah. Fixing an old car is nothing like the expense and hit that you get when buying a new one. Even engine replacement become reasonable.
Major pain in the butt for older ones is things that are rubber/plastic based deteriorating from age and internal wiring. Often easier costwise if not time wise to simply replace the entire wiring harness than track down various shorts etc on a old vehicle.

The concept takes less than that, even. The problem is figuring out how to get the car or truck rolling. Shifting from, say, second to third, is nothing. Taking the foot off the clutch and applying the right amount of gas to get the car or truck smoothly is the real trick.
I still can't believe my father turned out to be the best, most patient teacher of the stick shift.

In college, a friend's girlfriend learned to drive stick in a Subaru, which had a "hill hold" clutch. A group of us were taking a little trip and we were in my car. It was her shift to drive and at a light, she rolled backwards and panicked. Had never had to deal with it.
She got over it quickly, though. She did know how to drive, just had never experienced that behavior.

Trans replacements usually outprice engine replacements at this point. Modern automatics are seriously expensive.
But that isn't the point. It will be cheaper than a new car, yeah, for sure - and may be better value as well. That doesn't mean the price won't bring tears to your eyes, though.

I tend to stay in the mainstream on vehicles because I don't have my identity tied up in them. Drove far too many different vehicles over the years including for work to get sentimental much about them. By avoiding the 'premium' models, one can pretty much find components from wrecked vehicles if nothing else. At a certain age though, these dry up.

Scientists think they have found a way to double the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. (Science Daily)
Lithium-ion batteries wear out a little each time they are recharged (and have another flaw that if you keep them on the charger full-time they can swell up and destroy your expensive gadget entirely).
In testing the effects of different charging patterns, researchers found that charging with high-frequency AC power caused half as much wear as regular DC power.
It should be cheap and simple to implement as well.
