Apparently the pro-tax side is now admitting that a big driver in the town's increased costs are driven by Bidenflation..obviously the solution to inflation is more government spending.

LOL! This literally happened to me. Well, something very similar.

I was a teenager when my mom's Kitchen-Aid mixer finally broke. We were out running errands, one of which was "replace the mixer." We went to buy it and it was, of course, expensive.

When it rang up, the clerk - a girl a bit older than me, so either a *very* young Xer or a leading-edge Millennial - commented that it was a lot of money for a mixer. My mom replied, "it is, but the last one worked well for 35 years, so it's worth the money." The girl's eyes widened and she said, "I didn't know they even *had* mixers 35 years ago."

I was dumbfounded.

Your VOIP box might have a "pulse dial" switch. If it's a real landline, it will *probably* still work.

But when you call the pizza joint, the IVR system you have to navigate before laboriously keying in commands or making your way through inaccurate and cumbersome voice recognition systems will certainly not be compatible with it.

Usually. I just gave that advice to someone very recently.

Some IVR systems simply refuse to permit it. Hit zero, give bad input, demand an agent to the voice-recognition robot, whatever. Some systems just have no "last resort" live-answer queue.

Businesses that implement those systems hate their customers more than most.

So there was no attempt by law enforcement to help her get a license?

The New York pistol permit process can be an incredible PITA depending upon which county you are in. The closer you are to NYC, the harder it can get.

That's the dilemma. If E Jean Carroll had registered the gun, it would have hit the papers. And may have attracted lone wolves, seeking vengeance for their President.

As she didn't register the gun, she broke the law and lost the weapon for her protection, again, attracting lone wolves.

She should buy another.

Where are the gun wavers? The NRA? Thye should be defending her.

A High Standard 9-cylinder is a .22. About as innocuous a revolver as you can buy. Definitely not a Dirty Harry hand cannon.

The future of Cuba and the trajectory of communism are under threat, with citizens fighting back against the regime. Protesters are taking to the streets amid an ongoing economic crisis, making their concerns heard. Since the 2021 protests, it is estimated that nearly 500,000 Cubans have sought refuge in the United States.

LOL.

That dude paid to hear him sing and play, not propagandize and had the temerity to remind him of that. If he had any class at all, he'd have said something like, "okay, that doesn't interest you. Let's get back to the music then, eh?" Or, if he had less class but still even a scintilla of respect for his audience, he could have just ignored the heckler, continued his spiel anyway, and then finished his set.

Or insult the audience and storm off like a little bitch. Whatever.

“I do expect etiquette inside of the theater, the same way you would at a Broadway show,” he told the publication. “My shows are not really concerts anymore. They’re performances, and there’s a difference between a performance and a concert. Look, I’m not for everyone anymore. I’m just not. And if you want to come and scream and yell and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”

... I sort of thought that speakers on college campuses should get the same treatment. Mellencamp's problem is that he got the same treatment speakers on college campuses get.

Yeah. Long gone are the days of "if you want good gas mileage, get a manual" and with CAFE, automatics are sort of needed at this point to squeeze out the fuel economy requirements. And if you're a city-dweller stuck in rush hour, manuals are a pain in the ass.

They're not going away, but they're essentially niche and are likely to stay that way.

No. Had to deal with the few pro gun leftists as a mod at a general firearm site years ago. They cannot help but put their psychoses into their comments. They are essentially useless as supporters of the 2A because they buy guns as a fear response from imaginary issues or they have them because of a personal issue in their life (being stalked, etc.). All too often, they support 'reasonable' restrictions because they have their guns Jack as a bulwark against the White Christian Nationalists or whoever the media tells them to hate.

Tribute bands are a great way to enjoy the music of a band / artist at a tremendous value. They put in an outstanding effort to sound like the original performers, and they tend to adhere to the "shut up and sing" approach. Sometimes you can see multiple bands for a very reasonable price.

Last year I saw a double bill -- Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam tribute bands back to back for $25 at a very small venue. They were both amazing, and I didn't have to pay a ton of money to be far away from the stage and listen to a bunch of douchebaggery coming out of Eddie Vedder's mouth.

434 my oldest son drove a '54 Chevy 3100 to high school. He could leave the keys in it and it wouldn't get stolen because the kids couldn't figure out what all the levers, switches and buttons did. He was so in tune with that rig once he got it rolling he never used the clutch. He used a stick as his gas gauge.
He took it to UT and brought it back after about 6 weeks because he found out somebody with a pick up was always going to be moving cheap furniture around Austin.

438 Our new truck has a 10 speed Allison transmission. I must say, it's always in the right gear, especially when towing something.

Same here. My father's cars, once I was old enough to insist on the two lousy lessons he ever gave me, were autoboxes. So was the future Mrs. Wolfus No. 1's Ford Maverick (a nice car for its day, esp. if you'd been riding buses or cadging rides from friends for a decade or more to get to school).

Nah. Fixing an old car is nothing like the expense and hit that you get when buying a new one. Even engine replacement become reasonable.

Major pain in the butt for older ones is things that are rubber/plastic based deteriorating from age and internal wiring. Often easier costwise if not time wise to simply replace the entire wiring harness than track down various shorts etc on a old vehicle.

The concept takes less than that, even. The problem is figuring out how to get the car or truck rolling. Shifting from, say, second to third, is nothing. Taking the foot off the clutch and applying the right amount of gas to get the car or truck smoothly is the real trick.

I still can't believe my father turned out to be the best, most patient teacher of the stick shift.

In college, a friend's girlfriend learned to drive stick in a Subaru, which had a "hill hold" clutch. A group of us were taking a little trip and we were in my car. It was her shift to drive and at a light, she rolled backwards and panicked. Had never had to deal with it.

She got over it quickly, though. She did know how to drive, just had never experienced that behavior.

Trans replacements usually outprice engine replacements at this point. Modern automatics are seriously expensive.

But that isn't the point. It will be cheaper than a new car, yeah, for sure - and may be better value as well. That doesn't mean the price won't bring tears to your eyes, though.

459 Manual transmissions vs. auto: That said, I had fun using the auto stick in manual mode and shifting (albeit with no clutch needed) in the 1980s Mercedes sedans, the 2011 Buick Regal, and the 2015 BMW 328i. In '21, staying in the hilly suburbs of Birmingham, AL, I found great entertainment in shifting to manual mode in the Buick LaCrosse and traversing a twisty residential road with some fairly steep climbs. (Nothing like in CO, but I was out of practice for hill driving, and had to adjust.)

I tend to stay in the mainstream on vehicles because I don't have my identity tied up in them. Drove far too many different vehicles over the years including for work to get sentimental much about them. By avoiding the 'premium' models, one can pretty much find components from wrecked vehicles if nothing else. At a certain age though, these dry up.

479 Here it is:

Scientists think they have found a way to double the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. (Science Daily)

Lithium-ion batteries wear out a little each time they are recharged (and have another flaw that if you keep them on the charger full-time they can swell up and destroy your expensive gadget entirely).

In testing the effects of different charging patterns, researchers found that charging with high-frequency AC power caused half as much wear as regular DC power.

It should be cheap and simple to implement as well.
