A few years back I took my family to the Grand Canyon. On the way there, I emphasized that, while it's awesome and everyone should see it, at the end of the day it's just a hole in the ground.
My wife was not amused. Bitched at me quite a bit about it.
On the way home, though, she said... it was awesome and all, and I'm glad we got to see it together but it really is just a hole in the ground.
That having been said, the Grand Canyon is always there and a total eclipse is really awesome and everyone should see one.

I agree that everyone should see an eclipse. Hubby and I saw the last one because his sister happened to live in the path so we took some time off and drove to the middle of nowhere in Wyoming to watch it. And it was very cool to see.
That said, the absolute traffic jam leaving the middle of nowhere to get home was epic. I can see why more populous areas are calling for emergency measures. Gas stations along the route were running out of gas, etc.
If the traffic in Wyoming was that bad, I can't imagine what it will be like at Niagara Falls.

I'm not optimistic that they can pull it off again. Time will tell, but I think (or maybe it's just a forlorn hope) that they've shot their wad. COVID was such a catastrophe that was so pointless and so stupid that it ended the world. 2020 really was Year Zero in a lot of ways. The old world ended that year, and it has been incredibly traumatic.
I don't know that they'll find such ready compliance this time around.

I've seen three partial eclipses. The cool part was that the sunlight through the trees cast eerie crescent-shaped lights and shadows on the ground and the light fades a bit.

I never trust people who make a point to avoid telling you their ideological commitments.
