  • If you comply with the rules, we'll change the rules: The US Commerce Department has banned Nvidia's RTX 4090D from sale in China. (Tom's Hardware)

The 4090D was designed specifically to comply with the ruling that banned the 4090.

A little too specifically, perhaps. But maybe Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo should post the rules she wants companies to actually follow rather than expecting them to play some psychotic game of red light green light.

  • The LSST camera did not cost $350 billion dollars. (Gizmodo)
To do this, the team needed a Rolls Royce of a digital camera. Mind you, the camera actually cost many million times that of an actual Royce Royce, and at 6,200 pounds (2,812 kilograms), it weighs a lot more than a fancy car.
It's an amazing camera - the largest digital camera ever built, with a resolution of 3.2 gigapixels - but the entire LSST project - the buildings, the telescope assembly, the massive mirrors - the primary mirror is 28 feet across - and this camera is less than 0.2% of that.

(A basic Rolls Royce Ghost costs around $350,000, and weighs 5700 pounds, so they're off on the weight too; just not by three orders of magnitude.)

  • Can AMD's 3D Vcache improve game performance for low-end graphics cards? (Hot Hardware)

I was fully expecting the answer to be no, but if you're doing a budget build with a previous generation AMD chip and a card like AMD's own 7600, Intel's 750, or Nvidia's 3060, it might actually be worth the extra money for a 5000-series X3D chip.

The biggest difference was Cyberpunk 2077 with an Intel Arc 750, where average frame rates jumped 30% from 46 to 60 fps just by upgrading from a 5800X to a 5800X3D. About half the games tested showed negligible difference though.

Which makes the newer 5700X3D an interesting proposition. It's 10% slower than the 5800X3D but 25% cheaper, and if you're on a budget might just hit the sweet spot.

  • Cannot remove files, disk is full. Please remove files to free up space and try again. Lol. (Six Colors)

Okay, Apple, I can understand that you were trying to make everything user-friendly so that you can un-delete files that were removed by accident, but what you actually achieved was users having to wipe and reinstall the entire system because you ran out of space.

And these are experienced tech journalists we're talking about, who... Yeah, off by three orders of magnitude. Never mind.

  • Ubuntu 24.04 might become Ubuntu 24.05. (Tom's Hardware)

The unreleased beta version had the xz unpleasantness, and Ubuntu wants to be super-duper sure that it's been expunged with utmost prejudice. So the planned release data of April 25 could slip into next month.

I doubt that anyone would be upset about Ubuntu taking that precaution. Except perhaps for North Korea.

8 ON the last thread, JQ wrote, "Sis is hopelessly libtarded. Probably because her husband is also. Then, coupled with the fact that they live in NW Washington State, they have no choice (or face cancellation) but to speak anything besides the Leftard Phrases of Compliance. She is, otherwise, quite intelligent. I can't understand it."

I've commented before about the otherwise sharp Bernie Bro in my (now former) real-life writing group. He's a Vietnam vet and has worked as an electrician most of his life. You'd think he'd see the failures of socialism and see through the Democrap lies. But noooo. A lot of it is probably Trump Derangement -- I don't recall him making any noise about pollitics at all before 2016. He keeps insisting that Trump "never even graduated from college." If he won't accept an observed fact -- that even Wikipedia, no friend to DJT, admits Trump graduated from the Wharton School -- then I have no time for him.

9 >>The Rubin Observatory’s key goal is the 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a sweeping, near-constant observation of space. This endeavor will yield 60 petabytes of data on the composition of the universe, the nature and distribution of dark matter, dark energy and the expansion of the universe, the formation of our galaxy, our intimate little solar system, and more.

Morning, Lizzy! No, I don't recall. We had another long-time member who insisted HRC was "the most qualified candidate ever to run for Pres.," would not listen to little facts like those surrounding Benghazi, and left the group in a huff in the early fall of '16. I'd been with that group for ten years at that point. I'd never suspected that a simple matter of an election would upset otherwise intelligent people so much.

26 Mandated safety equipment: Seat belts, windshields that break into small round bits instead of glass shards, disc brakes with antilock, and body shells that resist crumpling are all things the industry had available before the govt. got involved. Mercedes, for instance, was researching all that before the mid-'60s. Of course their cars cost more than the standard issue GM and Ford vehicles of the time.

GM, say, could have mounted an advertising campaign of their own to get people to realize the safety features were important. But then, they'd have risked consumers saying, "Well, GM cars aren't safe if they need all these things, we'll buy a Chrysler."

True. What I mean is, GM and the other companies could have headed off govt. interference by offering a certain basic level of safety equipment *as well as* power, styling, and convenience. They'd started putting in padded dashboards, for instance, before the Feds got involved, and seat belts were available (at a small extra cost) for a long while before.

Of course the buying public might well have rejected the whole idea. "Edith and I been drivin' all our lives and we ain't dead yet, there."

36 Re: automotive weight.
When I rescued the Saab 9-5, can't say I 'purchased' this car, it seemed to have a personality and I had to interpret whether it was male or female. It indicated it wasn't female so, Von Sydow, named after Jobert in 'Three Days Of The Condor': the older gentleman, really on his way out, that doesn't look like much but is a real assassin.
I've had Von Sydow up near 150mph.
But, that car weighs 3600 pounds! I was horrified.
If it hadn't been 'Von Sydow, SHE would have been 'Fat Helga'.

45 Oh, 'Fetty', as in 'Fetty Leg'. We get people not that old who can't walk with their legs wrapped in bandages or whatever they can get, even newspapers wrapped in tape. Most people have moved from Oxy to smoking fentanyl, which apparently tries to push the poisons out through the extremities, so it 'sweats'? through the skin or pores in arms and legs, mostly legs.
Anyway, Fetty is so cheap anyone not able to swing the usual pills or H is now smoking it, leading to people coming in with huge open sores all over their arms and legs.
To me, not a huge deal as again, Fetty is so cheap it has not led to an increase in theft-crime. Anyone can afford it.

Posted by: LenNeal at April 04, 2024 05:03 AM (43xH1)

46 Big Fetty market is older people who have tapped out their pain meds through ObamaCare and just now get Fetty. Most of them have had it once, usually in official medical care, so they know it, and it's dirt cheap. It's easier for them to get Fetty than go through legal channels.
They're dying off quick.

I work nights, as I keep saying, so if I stop in somewhere in the early mornings I see old people getting coffee and breakfast, and the loneliness. It's loneliness of having lost their spouse of many decades, having their kids move away, they're alone, and just... isolated and lonely.
I see old men alone, old women alone, they're just lonely and it's not pathetic it becomes a kind of existential loneliness. I don't want that for you.
I get it all the time at the supermarket.

87 The Microsoft thing makes me think about personal transportation. If it wasn't for government regulation, and corporate monopolies insisting on same, we'd all be driving much less expensive vehicles that weigh less, and subsequently get far better gas mileage.
I grant there would be far more injuries and deaths from the lack of mandated safety equipment.
Posted by: LenNeal at April 04, 2024 04:30 AM (43xH1)

I suspect that "far more" injuries and deaths might be overstating things a hair. Seat belts and crumple zones and the big winners and I doubt that either adds significantly to cost or weight.

A bigger issue is probably CAFE standards which, in order to meet, car companies have put out either massive SUVs or tiny sub-compacts with the SUVs being overpriced to give a discount to the small cars.

Also, if we all built our own cars I'd bet they wouldn't go very fast. The single thing that dictates traffic deaths is speed. Hate to say it but I've driven, well, fastest, 180 mph and that was on a PUBLIC HIGHWAY in the USA, I've had my own current car at 150mph, those are deadly speeds.
The sweet spot seems to be about 40-45 mph. But nobody wants to do that.

On small two-lane roads, if one is driving decently slowly, because one day is much like any other under the vastnest of that sky, one slows down and pulls halfway onto the gravel shoulder and lets whatever Oat Sower or Ranger, technically Department of Public Safety, speed on by to get where they need to get to, in such a hellfire rush.

Used to be, when you entered the state, there were signs which said "Drive Friendly, the Texas Way". Basically it means be courteous.

Don't drive in the left lane just because you can. Don't tailgate. Don't cut people off.

A big thing that new people don't get it that there's lots of places out in the sticks where the road shoulder is really wide... that's so you can pull over on the shoulder and let someone pass you without having to stop yourself.

Texas drivers?

Last year when we wee at the MoMe, we took Mrs VIA's little Miata from South Carolina to Texas and back. Leaving Corsicana, we devoured down to Ft. Bragg for the day, and then back up to the Ft Worth area for several days.

I never enjoyed Interstate travel as much as that trip. Courteous folks everywhere. Very few encounters with folks weaving in and out. I had less stress that entire trip than one rush hour trip from Richmond Va to Baltimore, which is mostly white knuckle on wheels.

I see old men alone, old women alone, they're just lonely and it's not pathetic it becomes a kind of existential loneliness. I don't want that for you.

My experience in Texas (which does have good roads, even the state highways) is that people in their trucks roar past you if you're only going 10 over the posted limit, but then they don't cut back over untl they are well clear of your front bumper. I don't often see that in Da Swamp. Here, the idjits try to fit 10-foot-long vehicles into 8 feet of space -- ahead of me.

245 238 225 Aid workers or org not totally innocent. I remember seeing commercials for CARE, where they open a box and there's garden tools and seeds. They never showed the boxes with the SKS rifles and an album of the Red Army Chorus' Greatest Hits.
