The mention of the "El" means this goes back a ways. Rhennigantx posted it: 1930. They tore down the Third Avenue El, and any others in NYC, in the '70s, didn't they? It's on display in the movie The French Connection, I think.
Anyway, this is very much a "slice of life" painting -- much like a New Yorker short story as done by Dorothy Parker or Shirley Jackson. The Southern equivalent would be Flannery O'Connor. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 04, 2024 09:38 AM (J2vNu) 35

Whitney.org:
"In Why Not Use the “L”? the individual expressions of the three Depression-era passengers on the “L”—or “el”, an elevated train that rose above the city streets—range from distraction and exhaustion to apprehension. The walls of the car are papered with advertisements, which Reginald Marsh had meticulously copied into his sketchbooks, including one for buckwheat pancakes and the one used for the painting’s title: “The subway is fast—certainly! But the open Air Elevated gets you there quickly, too—and with more comfort. Why not use the “L”?” This particular train might have been one of the two lines that ran to Coney Island, since Marsh frequently travelled there in search of subjects to paint. One of the stops on these lines was at Eighteenth Avenue, which may account for the sign reading “East 18” in the painting’s upper right corner." The woman passenger to the left is reading a newspaper -- the 1930 equivalent of checking AoS on your tablet or phone. The sleeping guy has given up on the news of what Pres. Hoover is doing about the economy, since it doesn't affect him at all, and has let his paper slip to the floor of the subway car. The woman in the green coat is simply staring into space, contemplating either the day's work to come or the yawning hellpit that awaits her at home.

All three are wearing headgear. The man's appears to be a "newsboy" cap; you'd see actual kids as well as ones in the movies wearing those in the street. Green Coat Woman's "hat" is blue, and so is that of the Newspaper Reading Woman. The last one, however, is more like one of those soft felt things women wore in the Twenties -- a "cloche" hat? Is that the right term?
The label for the stop: When I visited NYC in 1998, they simply labeled the stops on the subway wall as "East 23 St," "West 34 St," or the like; no "-rd" or "-th." I guess that simplifies things. Well beyond that! They were run by competing political machines, who went around outlawing, bankrupting and dispossessing each other's public-funded monopolies like so many Trump valuation judges. Interesting composition. White woman separated from the two black people by a wall with her hood pulled up. Nicely dressed and composed black woman. Black dude with the open mouth. The painting is meant to evoke a certain wariness. The black lady, while presenting herself nicely looks... resigned. This was painted in 1930. I dislike most art from the 20s and 30s because I always feel like the painter is trying to say something social (because they usually are.) Well, wiki supplies the interpretation of Marsh's work. Feels... forced.
Wiki: Marsh was obsessed with the American woman as a sexual and powerful figure. In the 1930s during the Great Depression, more than 2 million women lost their jobs, and women were said to be exploited sexually.[18] Marsh's work shows this exploitation by portraying men and women in the same paintings. The women may be half clothed or fully naked, and are purposeful and strong; the men are voyeurs, often less imposing than the women. According to art historian Marilyn Cohen, "[Marsh's] world is filled with display: movies, burlesque, the beach, and all forms of public exhibition. Men and women are both spectators and performers within a heavily sexualized world. And Marsh was clearly fascinated by both aspects of that world—almost always presenting its two sides in the same image."[19] Posted by: Aetius451AD at April 04, 2024 10:01 AM (di6C2) 114

I like this painting, as it brings back memories. I was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1955. Bay Ridge is served by the N train. Since we were the hinterlands, the N train always had some of the oldest equipment. In the mid 60s, they were still running cars built in 1917. Wicker seat covers, enamel straphangers, open fans, of course no air conditioning. Can still remember sights and sounds of it, this painting brings it back to me. Thanks. Now, let's all go to Coney Island!

I've already been to Manhattan a few times, so I've seen all of that I need to. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at April 04, 2024 *** When I visited NYC in '98, I'd been fascinated with the city and its bustling activity, at least in fiction, since I was a young teen: the Nero Wolfe and Ellery Queen stories, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (their HQ was set there and they occasionally had adventures set in the city), and lots more. New York always seemed more accessible and glamorous to me than the London of even Peter Wimsey's time (which was only a little older than the earliest NW and EQ tales). And then there had been Ghostbusters and other movies. So I was happy to see most of the landmarks and areas I'd read about: Fifth Avenue and the Empire State Building, the Algonquin Hotel, Central Park, etc. I'm glad I experienced it. But even if I could afford it, I have no desire to live there. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 04, 2024 10:10 AM (J2vNu) 146

The pressure campaign on Justice Sotomayor needs to stop! The notion everything can be gamed out is fiction, based on the mistaken notion it would have made a difference if Ruth Bader Ginsburg had only retired while Obama was president. It would not have.
...what with Manchin and Sinema still in the Senate, it is unclear whether Democrats could even seat a justice at the present moment! Sotomayor is just 69 years old. Yes, she is a type 1 diabetic, but she has managed that condition since she was 7 years old! She's highly intelligent and well-informed. She cares about the nation, and about justice. She's bright enough to calculate whether she can best serve the nation and serve justice by resigning or by staying on. Since Covid people boldly tell seniors when it is time to dry up and blow away. Across the board in our society.😥 Disagree on RBG. The Republicans would have allowed Obama to replace her. They weren't going to allow Obama to replace Scalia with a liberal. When my boss was pregnant, she'd get on the train with me in downtown Oakland -- and I'd very publicly shame the male riders who refused to get up and give her their seat (as I always did for females when I had a seat and the car was full). Only had a couple of instances -- usually when the Oakland A's were playing -- with young POCs playing loud music and harassing riders, but it never escalated to violence (and I had a pistol in my briefcase ... just in case). An old Pilot sat down at the Starbucks and ordered a cup of coffee. As he sat sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him.
She turned to the pilot and asked, 'Are you a real pilot?' He replied, 'Well, I've spent my whole life flying biplanes, Cubs, Aeronca's, Nieuports, flew in WWII in a B-29, and later in the Korean conflict, taught 50 people to fly and gave rides to hundreds, so I guess I am a pilot, and you, what are you? She said, 'I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about naked women. When I shower, I think about naked women. When I watch TV, I think about naked women. It seems everything makes me think of naked women.' The two sat sipping in silence. A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old pilot and asked: "are you a real pilot?" He replied, 'I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian.' These two subdivisions have their own rules, stereotypes, and in-jokes,
and can sometimes seem as if they’re at war with each other, rather than both working together for mutual sexual pleasure. But often, penetrative sex can feel divided into rigid binaries that make being a top or a bottom seem like a cult you’ve signed up to for life, and one that you have to declare as soon as two (or more) consenting men decide to take their clothes off and rub up against each other. Legend would have you believe that once you’ve earned your gay card, a Harry Potter-like ceremony occurs where, instead of the Sorting Hat, a giant magical butt plug divides all gay men into two houses: tops or bottoms. What reforms to solitary have taken place in U.S. Local villagers, anti-Japanese guerillas and missionaries did their best to help the U.S. In 1890, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Miller condemned the practice: "A considerable number of the prisoners fell, after even a short confinement, into a semi-fatuous condition, from which it was next to impossible to arouse them, and others became violently insane Posted by: 3some at April 11, 2024 10:30 AM (YutSU) 332
