The Morning Report — 4/3/24

melted2.jpg

Good morning, kids. I can see already that it's going to be one of those days. No editorial but links below.

    ABOVE THE FOLD, BREAKING, NOTEWORTHY

  • "The quake, which rocked the island just before 8 a.m. local time, downed buildings in Taiwan’s eastern city of Hualien and caused a small tsunami on the coast of Japan’s Yonaguni island, officials said. The deaths were reported in Hualien, which was the epicenter of the earthquake — the strongest one to hit Taiwan in 25 years, according to the country’s fire department."
Horrified commuters thrown around train, child rescued from collapsed building as 7.4-magnitude earthquake kills 7, injures 700 in Taiwan
  • "Naïve FSA managers were dismayed that the independent-minded settlers did not adapt to communal life; 'economic democracy' was, after all, the ultimate goal of establishing a cooperative farm. To the New Deal architects of Casa Grande, enlightened communal living was a moral imperative." (Hat tip to Buck Throckmorton - jjs)
Government Project: The Eternal Folly of Central Planning
  • "Leftists are vowing to stay away from red states’ universities. Good." (Like they vow to leave the US the first time Trump won? I don't believe them. They're infiltrators and won't stop until we are conquered or dead - jjs)
    Do You Promise?
  • "People who didn’t go to college could feel rightly aggrieved at the windfall the college debtors receive, but they—and indeed the whole country—could benefit from ending the college support scam."
    Donald Trump and Student Loans
  • John Stossel: "How woke politicians are doing it – and very successfully."
    Protecting Squatters

5 Earthquake on Taiwan? Well, that settles it. Mail in ballots, no ID checks and no postmarks required for everyone. We don't want to risk disenfranchising a single American who might be living on Taiwan and have their mail delayed because of this.

We're going to need this kind of sunlight, on TimCast last night, they were showing voter registration data that was crosschecked with the SSA and it showed that 23k newly registered voters in Texas were dead and 7k newly registered voters in Missouri were dead, in the month of March.

She has four fractured ribs. She is in considerable pain, and is not a stoic. During my visit to her isolated hospital room, I could hear her yelling "I'm in pain 2 doors down."

I helped calm her down. I told her of the praters of the Horde, and I think that did the trick. I can testify. Well and some morphine on top of another opioid.

She has COVID-19 Wuhan, somehow. I tested negative. I will keep a watchful eye to make sure she is not put on a respirator.

I really think that, with the information available to us now and a few days to hash this out, it was an accident.

Of course, that does not necessarily absolve the Dali's owners of responsibility. There will be all sorts of legal wrangling and official determination of negligence that I'm sure will draw out the reconstruction process. Nevertheless, this may end up being a tragic and notable example of the inherent risk of getting out of one's bed in the morning and simply going to one's job.

We had two days and nights of constant severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings. Yesterday was pretty hairy. Mostly straight-line winds up around 50-60MPH and brief torrential downpours.

Pretty common for this area in the spring. But the winds were a bit off the hook this time.

What was weird was that a very strong line of storms swept over the state of West Virginia, spawning several tornados... in the Appalachians.

It seems to have settled on interior, actual dry bulb thermodynamic equilibrium temperate of 73.2F and RH of 54%. It is calling that 75F internal temp. That is against outside conditions of 66F temp, and near 100% RH.

Again, I am impressed with this T-stat's "real feel" response.

My last visit the administrative geniuses decided to create a new department, a pain department. The Department of Pain, totally separate from my attending physician who had first hand knowledge of my mental and physical condition. (You can't quantify pain) This office, somewhere in another building, decided what the pain level was and what I needed.

I awoke in the middle of the night pulling tubes. It was a subconscious reaction to the pain. I called my Primary who contacted the hospital. Pain Dr. came down and yelled at me two times before she was dismissed from my case and my Primary had responsibility for my medication. You're going to have to be pushy.

And only was loaded to about 50% of capacity for containers.

And as was pointed out on a youtube channel by someone who seems well informed. was still coasting at in excess of 7 knots when it was approaching the bridge. More like coasting than drifting.

At 7 knots, even without main propulsion, if your rudder is under positive control, you have a good bit of rudder authority. Or as he said, if you had rudder control, you could have coasted under the bridge and then went to anchor as speed bled off.

Depends on:

1. How long do you expect to live, in retirement?
2. What do you expect the average inflation rate to be over that time?
3. Do you believe that social security will exist for a significant portion of that time?
4. What is the cost of living where you expect to be?
5. Do you anticipate requiring long-term care as you age?
6. How much over and above the minimum required is needed to weather a financial downturn?

It sounds like a lot but if it's all you've got for 20+ years...

Re these fancier thermostats for the HVAC that try to respond to "real feel" conditions". I didn't say this, and I this is all kinds of problematic, but the trouble is Female Womyns.

Their notion of temperature does not correspond to any objective thermodynamic criteria that can easily be determined. When they "Feel Hot!', the turn the A/C way down. When the Get Coidl!, the turn the heat way up.

This causes all sorts of wildly oscillating HVAC repsonse that is very hard on HVAC systems, especially for very large buildings and what not. \

So, the idea with some of the newer fancier T-stats, is to try to display, to said Female Woman, some notion of "how I feel" temp wise, and to try to keep her from fucking with the thermostat too much.

Again, such talk is terribly probleamatic, I didn't say it, but that's the HVAC guys explained these newer T-stats to me.

Before I moved to Texas a few years ago, my doctor in California would, at the start of every appointment, ask my permission for him to put on some “high tech” glasses…. They basically had a live video feed to someone somewhere that would observe the appointment through his eyes and enter all the info into my electronic records in real time. Saved him a lot of time apparently; I always gave permission but now in retrospect I’m not entirely pleased that I did. Haven’t encountered that in Texas yet but I’m sure it’s all over…

122 "Without power the rudder is nil."

And there is the rub.

System seems to be designed that even when down to your emergency diesel generator, you should by design have electrical power to the hydraulic pump for the steering gear/rudder.

And video suggest that there was a longer than allowed period of time from loss of lighting, which might have been the moment of loss of electrical power to the return of electrical power.

Gonna be a long read once the final report comes out.

I used to man Aft Steering for Sea and Anchor many a year ago.

Different system with different levels of redundancy, but basically, without electricity to generate the signal from the helm to the steering system there would be no way to tell the rudder which way to turn. It's power circuitry and also control circuitry.

In our case, you could take local control with a 'trick wheel' directly attached to the controller for the hydraulic control block and receive rudder orders from the bridge through sound powered phones if needed.

Then there was the emergency hand pump for the hydraulic system if you were in the shits.

And THEN, there was the emergency tackle to turn the rudder very slowly in a coordinated effort if you were REALLY in the shit.

But that would be along the lines of Captain Kirk telling the helm 'Let's go that away' in a general direction, not stay within a few degrees of ordered direction.

3. An internal battery - which worked correctly but only records voice data

The diesel smoke coming out of the stack would have disbursed quickly with wind that speed. It was just hanging in the air, moving slightly south. If the ship was the hands on a clock it hit the bridge at about four o'clock, defying the anchor let out on the port side which should have steered it to three, even two o'clock.

That's not unreasonable. Assume you're a homeowner who did it right and have no mortgage or car payment when you retire. You're debt-free and preparing to live on your savings. You're down to just living expenses, taxes, insurance, etc.

That's 73,000 per year, assuming no gains and a 20-year post-retirement lifespan. That is indeed probably a "comfortable" retirement today. Most people could probably manage with somewhat less, but inflation continues to erode your lifestyle every second. The lessons I took from the Iraq and 'Stan wars under Shrub:

1) You need the same sort of war censorship efforts you had in WWII - and that will mean throwing a bunch of FNM assholes in prison for collaborating with the enemy.

2) You also need something like the RoE of WWII. Your goal as CinC is to force the enemy to accept our terms at a cost of as few American lives and as little American treasure as possible. Your goal is *not* minimizing pain for the enemy you are at war with.

3) You need a damn concrete goal. "Kill Saddam" or "destroy every village harboring AQ/Taliban members" is a goal. Bringing Democracy to Iraq is not.

Everyone close to retirement right now should be realizing and understanding that everything they planned and worked for their entire lives was pointless because the planned and estimated value of bulk of it - what you actually need to spend money on, like food - was taken away via immediate government seizure through inflation. Under normal economic circumstances, the money you saved will be earning money. If you have around a million, it ought to earn $70K or more each year. When inflation is low, your nest egg normally gets bigger in the first 5-10 years of retirement, even though you are pulling money out. When inflation is rampant like today, it is easy to start falling short quickly.

$1.46MM with the 4% rule is $58,400 per year in retirement before taxes. That's not a crazy amount. However the 4% rule is insane and doesn't take into account drawing down the savings.

I think taking out 6% with a 5% annual draw down in savings is completely and safely doable. The nest egg could be much smaller (potentially as low as $600k), especially if one owns their home free and clear of a mortgage. Social Security factors in it too but that is increasingly becoming a less reliable source of income.

No. She's telling people exactly what they need to hear. You have a criminal madman that quite blatantly tried to overthrow a dully elected government. If your fee-fees are too 'conflicted' and overwrought to respond to that, then 'F' you - and you own a portion of the criminal aftermath that will almost certainly follow.

Who was it who said, "You don't necessarily get YOUR choice. You get A choice." I haven't seen the antrum-throwers who helped dim donnie sleaze into the Oval Office because Hillary wasn't perfect enough for them repeating their performances because WEH! WEH! Firefighters of color were almost certainly chanting as well...they've unfortunately internalized the racism of our evil white culture. Some probably booed when they saw their white colleagues and supervisors doing so, in order to fit in and not be ostracized and punished...I think I just discovered ANOTHER level of racism and work-place harassment in the case! Back when I was in the Navy, Pearl Harbor was in the 97% total are of an eclipse. One guy asked if I could come in early for duty so he could run home and get photos with the really expensive equipment he bought for it. I agreed, arrived early and he left.

It was a cloudy day. No one could see the eclipse. Unless, of course, they had $2M submarine periscope optics they could use.

Wisconsin voters on Tuesday approved a pair of Republican-backed constitutional amendments that will change how elections are run in the critical battleground state, according to projections from the Associated Press.

The first measure, labeled on the ballot as Question 1, will ban the use of private funds in election administration — often referred derisively to by conservatives as “Zuckerbucks.”

The second measure, Question 2, narrows the role and definition of an election worker. Specifically, the measure asked voters to decide whether “only election officials designated by law may perform tasks in the conduct of primaries, elections, and referendums.”

[…]

Supporters said the first measure would effectively ban “dark money” from elections and that the second would help clarify and streamline election administration.

It begins, "Net gain as two dozen unions add members
Mining, transportation workers faced losses
Many of the nation’s largest unions including the Teamsters and West Coast dock workers saw membership gains last year, signaling potential for new organizing even as the labor movement struggles to tighten its grip on the workforce, according to new federal data."

If you read the article, note the chart therein, 'Union Membership Changes 2022 - 2023.' (Source: USDOL - Office of Labor Management Standards.) Note how both Governmental & 'Biden backed' unions continue to grow.

(For more insight, one of the major unions, AFGE dot org, has 'AFGE at the Glance' with subtopics including Our Leaders and Organization. 750,000 strong, federal and D.C. government workers across the United States and the world. IIRC, it & similar 'fought' former PDT every day of the week.)

386 In as far as the expansion of the ILWU on the chart, note that's BEFORE the Key Bridge 'mishap" arose. Now the East Coast faces another transportation-related quagmire: The Marine Executive, March 13, 2024, 'ILA Contract Talks Need Biden’s “Immediate Engagement” Says Apparel Group

In part, "The group cites the administration’s involvement with the West Coast dockworkers and rail workers contracts saying “A disruption is preventable with immediate engagement from the Biden Administration.”

Add in millions of border jumpers & yet we wonder & debate how the Biden administration brings us ever ^ costs in everything, drives increasing the Minimum Wage & about EVERY OTHER federal and state program. (See Biden's backyard: Gov. Shapiro on X, just today, April 3, 2024.)

Unhinged, or is it they're so comfortably isolated, from our reality??

Peace, when/if possible.
