And the intensity goes up not in a linear fashion, but by orders of magnitude -- I forget exactly how. So a 7.7 is a *lot* stronger than a 7!

My near 94 yr old mother, what just had the "minor" stroke due to fall induced head injury, just woke up. Cracker and pineapple juice time.

She was rattled. She had a bad dream. She was a fugitive from justice, she recounted. The cops were after her. What did you do, I asked her. "I don't know", she said, "but you were no help!"

Apparently, in her dream, I didn't help her. Maybe I turned her in.

19 After almost 3 years in Japan, I was fairly experienced with 'quakes... mostly they were 'rollers' and more horizontal motion.

The 'world series' quake was a vertical shaker. Very destructive motion. It slammed up & down. Sounded like a freight train as it approached. ba-boom boom, Ba Boom Boom, BA BOOM BOOM... WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!!!

Posted by: JQ at April 03, 2024 04:19 AM (njWTi)

26 Every unit on the right of the decimal = 1
So a 7.1 is x1 more than 7.0

Every unit on the left of decimal is x10
So a 7.1 is x10 more potent than a 6.1
a 7.1 is x100 more than a 5.1

I hope I got it right

There is actually a Fault in South Carolina. You can look that up. It's not too active at the moment, but way back when I was just a baby, there was some greater than normal activity. A little earthquake.

They tell, when I was little baby, around 1967-68, how I reacted to a little earthquake. I was "concerned" in my little basket, they say.

I don't remember this incident.

The New Madrid Fault zone is a big 'un. They pronouce it "mahdrid" and opposed to "MAH-drid".

Big earthquake in 1811 (magnitude estimasted as 7.2 - 8.2), and big aftershocks in 1812.

At the time, the area was sparsely populated. The Mississippi River flowed backwards during that event.

Well, 14 minute run time on the A/C, T-stat set point 75F. It said start temp was 77F. This is a lie. The T-stat's current temp depends on algorithms.

88 If so, how'd they get in it?

They walked in, so to speak. This is a thing about carp: if there's water in a furrow in a field, or in the gutters in a street, they'll wallow through it. They can lay in mud and survive. It's not safe to keep them in separate ponds if there's any chance the water will ever be up -- and that's how they came to infest most of the major waterways in the midwest.

Somebody told me once that Germans brought them here, because in alpine streams they're a fair-to-middling fighting fish on the line, and evoked happy memories of mountain life. Once they found swamp bottom they developed a whole new lifestyle and gave up their muscular ways. They were not alone in this.

It was one of the flashiest mysteries in the news about a decade ago — honeybee workers were vanishing fast for no clear reason. To this day, that puzzle has never been entirely solved, researchers acknowledge.

94 WI amended our constitution to ban private funds in election voting.
My local defeated a school referendum 60-40 with a voter turnout of about 25-30% depending on ward.
One election is TIED at 190 votes each and the Dem guy is a fucking menace.

95 @88 - thanks

Yeah, they're in the major rivers around here. Hopefully they won't make it into the reservoirs. Only way in would be through the outlet tubes I would think.

97 There is an Amazon Fresh store near me. It's quite convenient and fast, and prices are in line with other local stores.

And it is accurate. I have had a few issues with the charges (none recently) and Amazon took care of them effortlesly.

I was just reading something about this recent OMG!, the honey bees are dying stuff.

It was all bullshit. Turns out there is a long term cycle, there. Bee population waxes and wanes over maybe decade long cycles. Human activity, you know, bee keeping incentives and all that modulate it somewhat.

Anyway, the "colony collpase" disorder thing was just a natural cycle that has has been observed over many years.

It was all bullshit. Bees are now at the peak of that decade long cycle.

And this year we have something like 4 groups of cicadas coming up.

Nope, it ain't over 'til it's over:

ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Additional rainfall amounts between 1.0 to 3.0 inches are expected across the Watch area into Thursday. About two dozen of our river points are forecast to approach flood stage today into Thursday, with several exceeding flood stage.

Anyway, people what knew 'bout bees, knew this whole cycle of bee population. They knew this "Colony collapse disorder" was all bullshit.

But funny, how the news media just didn't report what the actual people, what knew 'bout bees was saying.

106 @99 - cicadas

They're saying 2 groups around here. 13 year and 17 year in same year. First time since, I think it said, 1803.

Why am I seeing Jake go through his excuses in the Blues Brothers?
And will it result in a big hatch of cicada killers?

107 What’s more, this year’s cicada groups, known as Brood XIII and Brood XIX, happened to make their homes adjacent to one another, with a narrow overlap in central Illinois.

Okay, I'm officially impressed about this here T-stat. When they was building Miley's house, the HVAC guys tol me this here T-stat they was puttin' in was the Shiz.

It responded to Humilarity as well as temperature (you know, actual thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, such as is defined). Well, they were rednecks, and didn't really know what Thermodynamic Equilibrium Temperate actually was, as per Lord Kelvin and Mr. Feynman might precisely define it. I'm a big redneck too, so I cain't criticize.

Anwway, under these conditions, this here fancy T-state, what they put in, is responding more to changes in RH than to temperature.

Leaving the Temp setting at 75F, it's going to slowly get the RH down to 50% before it worries too much about the actual temperature.

I'm impressed.

122 The UK, Poland, Australia, Canada and the US have demanded answers after 7 humanitarian workers from the World Central Kitchen were "unintentionally" killed

But rapes, beheadings, murder of women, children, and the elderly, burning folks alive, all done by Hamas? Yawns, or worse, excuses (Jews are occupiers!).

I'd DEMAND F'n answers for why some of those SAME countries are giving money that is knowingly being used by countries and organizations given that money to support terrorism. Get the fucking log out of your eyes, assholes, before you complain about the Jewish splinter; you guys are DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY responsible for October 7, 2023.

124 Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated "Someone going about providing aid and humanitarian assistance should [never] lose their life."

125 And believe me, front and center is what happened the other day. This doesn’t have to do with politics, this has to do with race.”

A supporter of the party of racism, slavery, lynching, and segregation accuses hard-working Americans of racism because they disapprove of another democrat supporter who is wrongfully going after the political enemy of her party by bending and breaking statues in league with judges who also support the same racist party by bending and breaking state laws in his rulings are somehow racist. Got it.
