67 Funny, when I first saw this it reminded me of Disney animation but I wasn't sure why. Probably the lush colors and gently convoluted areas against the stark, black tree (?) encroaching from the right. Shades of Sleeping Beauty or Snow White.

I like it but wouldn't hang it. But I would like to know more about Earle's materials and techniques for the painting.

107 The article by Randall Kennedy of Harvard Law School is entitled, “Mandatory DEI Statements Are Ideological Pledges of Allegiance. Time to Abandon Them.” Here is the most salient part of the article:

It would be hard to overstate the degree to which many academics at Harvard and beyond feel intense and growing resentment against the DEI enterprise because of features that are perhaps most evident in the demand for DEI statements. I am a scholar on the left committed to struggles for social justice. The realities surrounding mandatory DEI statements, however, make me wince. The practice of demanding them ought to be abandoned, both at Harvard and beyond.

I’ll enjoy the spectacle of the DEI cultists attacking Kennedy as some kind of adjacent white supremacist. Because that’s all they’ve got.

121 The article by Randall Kennedy of Harvard Law School is entitled, “Mandatory DEI Statements Are Ideological Pledges of Allegiance.

Hmmmm, guess I'll just turn over here. Seems like a good time.

Supposedly, back in the early days of nuclear powered submarines, the Navy noticed that submariners had a propensity to father girls. There was concern that this was a result to being in close proximity to the reactor for extended periods. The issue was studied at it was determined that the practice of fucking with the O2/CO2 ratio in the atmosphere produced semen which was more acidic than normal which, in turn, produced more baby girls.

Nobody really knows. There are a lot of theories but they’re just that theories. Absent any proof, I think the most rational position is randomness.

But within a random process there could be patterns. Roll a die 10 times you can get 3 rollls of 6 in a row. Doesn’t change the randomness of the roll.

205 Nobody really knows. There are a lot of theories but they’re just that theories. Absent any proof, I think the most rational position is randomness.

But within a random process there could be patterns. Roll a die 10 times you can get 3 rollls of 6 in a row. Doesn’t change the randomness of the roll.

Again, there is evidence of factors that affect sex probability. You're describing a purely random system, which this is not. Your assertion that sex is random does not comport with the current state of understanding.

Her Left Hand of Darkness seems at first glance to be an early look at transgenderism. The human natives of the planet Winter, however, switch sex *naturally* when they go into heat. "No biological habit is established, and the father of several children may be the mother of several more." In UKL's story, this affects their entire culture and interpersonal attitudes. Plus there is some solid adventure mixed into the story -- it is not a dull thudding tract at all.

Larry Niven has said that if a literary type asked for an SF story to learn about the field, to give him/her LHoD to read. "It's good by our [SF readers' and writers'] standards as well as their own."

287 Marc Andreessen @pmarca 19h
Prominent academic brings forward (a) studies and charts showing one thing is causing a second, bad thing, and (b) corresponding urgent policy reforms.

The 5 big questions to ask:

1. Your field is crippled by a vicious replication crisis; 50%+ and maybe even 70% of your field's studies don't give the same results when run by someone else. Why believe any of your analyses?

2. Why should we believe "wet streets cause rain" vs "rain causes wet streets"? A big part of the scientific replication crisis is mispresentation of cause vs effect. Why should we believe the flow of causation is as you say?

3. Few important things in the world are monocausal, most outcomes are overdetermined by several or many causes. Why should we believe that this is the single or main cause that is generating the effect, and not one or dozens of other causes, or no causes at all?

Posted by: andycanuck (5OvHh) at April 03, 2024 10:50 AM (5OvHh)

288 Marc Andreessen @pmarca 19h
4. Many prominent scientists just like you have come forward over the last 100 years with similar arguments; we look back on many of those as irrational moral panics, people freaking out over comic books and dime novels and bicycles and jazz music. Is this just another in a long series of academic- and activist-driven moral panics?

5. Thomas Sowell says, "There are no solutions, only tradeoffs." What are the tradeoffs of your proposed policy reforms? What are the downsides to be suffered by people you've never met and feel no responsibility to? Are you personally exposed to those downsides, or are you totally off the hook?

What if you have no health for which to care?

(We could fully privatize medicine, and set up a system where medical insurance is not unlike auto insurance; that is, that anyone can get it from any insurer with an enrollment period that extends from January 1 to December 31, and in this system, people pay for little things in cash/check/CC and save the insurance for big things. But this is the government, and this does not allow for the perpetuation and expansion of government power. So it cannot happen.)
