The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“When it comes to sweet food, whether we see it as an occasional treat or an everyday must, our personality traits are reflected not just in the taste of the food, but the appearance, the smell and that first bite melt-in-the-mouth moment.” Psychologist Jo Hemmings

Quote II

“This is a disaster waiting to happen. It’s already hard enough to vet people who come from places that use non-Roman alphabets. This ‘update’ will now enable people with nefarious intentions to add another layer of complexity to the vetting process by obscuring their sex.” Matt O’Brien, who served as chief of the national security division at USCIS and is now research director at the Immigration Reform Law Institute

Quote III

“Crisis is a good time to build culture. People will remember what you do for them in these moments.” Sara Blakely, Founder and CEO of Spanx

Kids Ate Cupcakes Tainted By Safeway Sicko
Police affidavit details Colorado man’s vile videotaped activities

APRIL 2--When police searched the home of a Colorado supermarket worker suspected in a series of 20 indecent exposure incidents, they discovered shocking videos showing the man--a registered sex offender--contaminating assorted food products with a bodily fluid, including a special order of cupcakes later consumed by children attending a birthday party, records show.

The probe of Stephen Masalta, 32, is detailed in a court affidavit prepared prior to his arrest last month on dozens of felony and misdemeanor charges. Masalta is locked up in lieu of $250,000 cash bond.

The case against Masalta stemmed from a police investigation into a five-month-long string of lewd episodes outside different coffee shops in Loveland and Fort Collins. A male suspect--wearing a face mask or gaiter--would appear in the predawn hours outside a shop and begin masturbating in view of workers inside. At times, the suspect was seen recording as he exposed himself.

Surveillance video from some of the crime scenes captured a silver sedan in the area at the time of the incidents. A detective concluded that, “the vehicle was a 2015 to 2017 Hyundai Sonata.” A subsequent search of law enforcement and sex offender databases revealed that a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with California plates “was associated with Stephen William Masalta,” who resided in Fort Collins, a city about 50 miles outside Denver.

Ukrainian civilians are evacuating the major northwest city of Kharkov, which has had its electricity supply destroyed. This is also in anticipation of the Russians launching a major offensive to take the city.
The Ukrainians are currently straining to contain the Russians all along the front, and are slowly being pushed back. What they are going to do when yet another major battle starts is unknown.

A Coin or Metals dealer will add his fee, on both the buying and selling end of the exchange.

There's nothing from you running an ad in Craigslist.

"Silver for Sale, NO added fee above Spot. Transaction to take place IN THE LOBBY of whichever Police Station you'd choose."

You'd get the Spot Value, without the Dealer holding a percentage. They Buyer gets metal at Spot, without paying a Dealer Premium. You both win.

Buy some lucky Cop a box of donuts, if he'll stand watch over the exchange. Bit of extra safety, for everyone there.

Some of the in the "in the middle" people were trying to find a way to reduce the tax increase to something not insane so they looked to see if they could reduce some of the earlier wasteful spending.

Well, the town is spending $20M to improve their library...see the state will give them $8M if the spend the rest so its...FREE MONEY...well except it is all coming from the taxpayer...but anyway so these people wanted to see if they could use some of that $20M to stop the tax increase and found out their town did blow $20M on fixing their library...they took out a $20M loan. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That's right morons not only is the town going to increase your taxes by 25% NOW if you vote it in there will be *years* of massive tax increases to pay off that loan.

Find the Coin Dealer of the highest repute, in your area. Good source for a referral...talk to the Museum Director of Antiquities at your local Best Museum.

Ancient Coins are often sourced and appraised by those very dealers, and they'll steer the BEST coins to those museums. Often, for a handsome price. Other times, they introduce the holder and the Museum Director, and let the donation take flow smoothy.

Goodwill WITH those Museum Directors, is often worth more than the price of a fee, anyway.

The appraisal cost me $40. Which cost the yard guy one free mowing.

But I did get the dealer to give up a cheap, plastic, preservation case for the coin, and a nice Appraisal Certificate.

And got to hold a nice, ancient coin, for a couple of days in the doing.

227 Major despair about the loss of Joe Flaherty. The man was such an amazing performer, and he put that talent to its best use with the brilliant folks at SCTV. His Guy Caballero character was such a gem, especially in their "Godfather" parody, with Rick Moranis playing the Michael character. (They've got the full episode on Youtube and you should really check it out)

Count Floyd really resonated with me because it wasn't that long ago that every local channel, whatever network they belonged to, that had their own version of the over-the-top horror movie host. Big markets had Svengoolie or someone major, but smaller markets had them too, and more often than not they were part of the local network news team picking up that extra paycheck - just like Count Floyd. I loved the 3D movie running gag with Floyd always scamming his younger viewers 3D viewing glasses at astronomical prices. (And the fact that virtually every film was something with Dr. Tpngue And...")

All this reminds me, though, of something the Horde wisdom could undoubtedly solve - most of the surviving members of the SCTV cast are accounted for, with reasonably healthy careers, but what happened to Dave Thomas?

268 Lactose intolerance may even have changed the course of history right here in North America. Leif Erikson's Vinland settlement, for all that they were vikings, actually made a decent effort to get along with and co-exist with the Indians near them in what's now Newfoundland. They even invited the local tribe to a feast, and despite being Eleventh Century near-barbarians, the vikings really put out quite a spread. A good time was had by all, and the Indians partook freely of the bounty laid before them. To the astonishment of Leif and company, that same tribe later attacked them with such ferocity that eventually everyone decided to pull up stakes and head back to Greenland or Iceland.

Leif couldn't figure out why their new friends had turned on them, until a Canadian historian stumbled across the likely answer. With the ancestors of so many American Indians having come from parts of East Asia, they're genetically inclined towards developing lactose intolerance in a very severe way. That Viking feast included a lot of cheese and dairy products. 1/

True church collection basket saga - in the tiny fundamentalist church I attended, it was expected that when you entered your mid teens, you would help conduct the Lord's Supper. Call it the Communion, the Eucharist, whatever term you'd like; that was just the phrasing that church used.

So you assemble with the others charged with the task after the sermon and the final hymn, and then you make your way down the aisles of the pews, handing out first the unleavened bread, then the wine (actually Welch's, as we were fundies living in a dry county), and then finally, the collection basket.

You're basically just making sure that everything is making it to the end of the pew, and that your partner is keeping up with you in tempo. On this occasion, a new family had been welcomed into the congregation. 1/

I managed to keep a straight face as the mother caught them and got the dinero back into the basket, but all of us doing this solemn ritual had to do our utmost not to burst out laughing until the service was officially at an end. 2/ and fin

Will see if next week the boy starts going to school; he dodged a bullet last night by showing up just before the police left, and miracles of miracles, a woman that knew my wife really well decided to check out what was going on (worked at the local middle school where both my kids went) as she was at her son's house around the corner. Little bro had a major surgery & 40-some staples, post-accident when he was a young buck. After nurse removed the first one, he wanted to take out all the rest.

Yeeeesh! *cringe*

How ya doing, Jim? Hope the 'sads' are fleeting. I lost a partner, long time ago, and it stung badly at times. Less and less as time passed but I still think of him often.

I got to looking at the IERS (International Earth Rotation Reference System) bulletins and data. Here is the LOD, excess length of day plot for about the last month. This is the difference between the length of the mean solar day measured in ephemeris/atomic time and 86,400 such seconds:
https://tinyurl.com/23djcsl8

That will take a while to load initially.

You see that variation. There's something there with a period of 2 weeks. YOu might guess that's short term lunar influences or something. It's not. That is some sort of oscillating exchange of angular momentum with the atmosphere, turns out.

Got a hernia while I was doing peritoneal dialysis. The effects were...unusual as it affected half of the body parts...which is to say a bilateral half. I was off dialysis for over a week (ate very little, drank very little) so I could do the surgery and start dialysis again.

Oh, here is a long term plot of the "LOD" value, the length of the mean solar day since 1962 (since such accuracy in the Erf Rotation Angle was possible):

https://tinyurl.com/y9xrbm5l

You will note that the Erf of late has sped up. Right now, moving year average, the mean solar day has been running a few tenths of a millisecond short.

In mid 2022, due the seasonal variation, we had the shorted such mean solar day on record. about 1.4 ms short. That is, that day, the mean solar day was 83,399.9986s long.

This is why we haven't needed a leap second since 2016.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 03, 2024 03:03 AM (w6EFb)

421
Note that speed up is likely temporary. However, if it continued at the current value there, or turned back down, we'd need a *negative* leap second in a few years.

This has never been done or even simulated. It would probably crash the entire internet and computer systems the world over.

422 RE: Joe Flaherty

SCTV, in my eyes, is criminally underrated. Every member of the core cast had (or still have) long careers, and a couple of them reached superstardom (Harold Ramis, John Candy, arguably Rick Moranis). Flaherty had more lower-key success, but he was a key member of the group. He created great characters like Count Floyd and Guy Caballero, and did good impersonations of Gregory Peck, Bing Crosby, and Kirk Douglass. R.I.P.

If you're wondering what the error bars on that is, it's about 10 - 20 microseconds. The very long baseline interferometry they used to precisely determine the Erf Rotational Angle (thing of this as a reference, as best can be determine against the "fixed background", inertial rotational angle) can determine this to that precision.

Still, the money isn't the same in DIII. Now watching a DII school (UVA-Wise) and they have 2 cameras. One in the outfield and the other near third base. They must have a few more bucks for an extra camera. The quality of baseball for both games was pretty decent.

"Defensive medicine" and insurance companies have greatly increased the cost of medical care.

The idea of a doctor having to look over his shoulders thinking of what some lawyer would say in front of a jury, and then thinking about what insurance companies will think is abomination.

Then, again, you've got bad docs. You want to be able to hold them accountable for bad behavior, but yet not let the "clinical error", you know judgement calls based on good faith be used against them.

443 Exactly, publius!

Hubby was, admittedly, in pretty bad shape. I figure they were afraid he would 'die on the table' and they'd get sued.

So, consequently, he's had to put up with this bulge-- and had a compression belt for it all this time-- and *still* ended up with a (preventable, IMO) serious problem.
