THE MORNING RANT: Buck Shots – 4/05/2024

I’ve been traveling and haven’t had access to my normal resources, so I’m just going to throw out a few other items that I’ve been thinking about…

Conservatives and Women’s Sports

Republicans are rallying around women athletes, with red state legislatures passing laws to protect female athletes from cross-dressing men who want to compete against the girls…and to share locker rooms with them.

Democrats and the media have aligned with the men who want to crash women’s spaces. One of their favorite gotchas is that conservatives never supported women’s athletics before, so why do we care now.

This headline and story are typical. “GOP claims to champion women’s sports, after decades of blocking it” [SanAntonio Express News – 4/23/2023]

That headline and story are deeply ignorant about the passion for girls’ sports in conservative rural areas.

My job had me running the roads of Central and South Texas for several years in the ‘90s and ‘00s. Small town folks, in addition to supporting their Friday night gridiron heroes, were very supportive of their girls athletic +teams too. If I was driving home at night and scanning small town radio stations, I’d often hear a broadcast of a local girls basketball or softball game. It was common for the restaurant marquees in small towns to have a sign reading something like “Go Lady Bearkats - Beat Sinton!” If a girls team was heading to the playoffs, the town would get decorated and follow the girls to cheer them on.

Back in my high school days in the 1980s at a big metro high school, I will acknowledge that there was almost no support for our girls’ teams. I was good friends through church with a girl on the high school basketball team, and I would frequently go watch her games. There were times when our little group of church friends were the only students in attendance, while the only adults in attendance were the parents of the players. But something special happened when a team from a small-town rolled into the city to play our girls. The small-town team would bring banners and signs and cheerleaders and a bus full of students and proud boosters from their town. I wished that my school and my friend could have received the support that I saw from all those small-town folks who were so passionate about their girls’ varsity athletics teams.

Did you hear about the women’s volleyball game in Nebraska that drew 92,000 fans last year?

If Republican-voting Nebraskans didn’t hate women’s sports so much, they might have been able to draw 93,000 fans.

“Democrats for Nixon,” “Reagan Democrats,” and “Minority Democrats for Trump”

Like the “Democrats for Nixon” in 1972 and the “Reagan Democrats” in 1980, a rebellion seems to be brewing among a core Democrat constituency, this time among minorities who are struggling with Biden’s inflation, and who are incensed about the illegal aliens that Biden has flooded into their communities.

One great thing about establishment Republicans having turned their noses up at Trump is that it provides reassurance to those flirting with casting a one-time protest-vote for Trump that it won’t make them Republican. There is a solid history in recent decades of loyal Democrats crossing party lines to vote for a Republican presidential candidate if the Democrat’s nominee is just too toxic, while proudly retaining their identity as a Democrat.

The first presidential race I have any recollection of is the 1972 race between McGovern and Nixon. I was only 8 years old, but I recall it because the father of a good friend of mine was a prominent mover and shaker in the Texas Democratic Party, and he was deeply involved in the “Democrats for Nixon” campaign, which was led by former Texas Governor John Connally.

These bumper stickers were everywhere that election.

Democrats had carried Texas in the three prior presidential elections, but Nixon won 66% of the Texas vote in 1972, and he won 48 other states too. A lot of Democrats cast one-time votes for Nixon in 1972, then returned to voting Democrat.

Trump would be wise to pursue a similar strategy of getting minority Democrats to cast their first - and perhaps only - Republican vote for him in November’s election.

Hippies, Rednecks, and Girls in Bell Bottoms

Speaking of Texas in the 1970s, the worst excesses of the hippies seemed to have passed by then, and by now the hippies, rednecks, and kickers (urban cowboys were called “kickers” before the John Travolta movie) started to create a cultural overlap, which was captured in the “outlaw country” music phenomenon. My formative musical heroes in the ‘70s were the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker, Asleep at the Wheel, Gary P. Nunn, Rusty Wier, and of course, Waylon and Willie.

Although the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters closed before ~~I got a fake ID~~ I was old enough to go to clubs, this quote from Eddie Wilson who owned the ‘Dillo captures the era well.

"It was girls in halter-tops. That’s what caused the petri dish to runneth over. When the rednecks were coming into the beer garden and seeing the hippie girls in their bellbottoms, they’d immediately start missing haircuts. And the hippies were already wearing cowboy hats, because if they wanted to buy a case of beer when they were traveling, they had to put their hair out of sight. The costumes were interchangeable, and the hormones were raging. All those guys with cowboy hats started growing their hair and all those guys with long hair started wearing cowboy hats and pretty soon there was nothing but girls in halter tops standing between them."

5 I'm not sure how much use it will be to get minority voters to vote for Trump when the Democrats have gotten so many dead and many otherwise illegal voters to "vote" for them.

Including the hundreds of thousands they've recently signed up to vote with zero picture IDs and no verification of legality.

That base has collapsed to about 30 percent of the population more or less as the Boomers and Silents age out.

It is an elite hive mind thing is that is driving a lot of the insanity--not voters. Basically the more education credentials and the greater one's salary is, the more insulation you have from idiotic policies and thus being part of the hive of cool is more important than life and death issues for a lot of the population.

They do not feel pain (yet) and will merrily drive society over a cliff because until the US crashes--it is not affecting them and theirs very much.

That is where Rassmussen polling indicates that political elites think is it perfectly okay to cheat and win and that the plebes have too much freedom and money.

41 When I was a gymnast at Oregon State, we had a group of guys who got an official university van and drove out to Salt Lake City to cheer us on at nationals. There was an attendance of over 10,000. This was in 1985.

They all wore orange sweatshirts and raised quite the ruckus when we marched out and when we were up on the apparatus. It was super fun.

EPA, killing the space program, wage and price controls, affirmative action, appointing liberal GOPers as judges, and a lot of other rot came in with the Nixon administration and his inner circle were pretty much SOBs.

48 It so happens I remember playing Jerry Jeff Walker's "Jaded Lover" and "Pick Up the Tempo" at an AM country station in Lafayette, LA, in the '70s. The program director was experimenting with "outlaw country" and "progressive country," as they were called, and tapped me to do an evening show featuring the new sub-genre. Played some Guy Clark ("Texas 1947"), Juice Newton and her band Silver Spur before she hit the pop charts, Timberline, and lots of others.

It might also be the inflated opinion of themselves. The 'common' people think that men cannot become woman. Well, me as a highly educated person understands the nuance and expert opinions that these common people simply don't get. My ability to understand this puts me above the common rubes, who easily fall prey to Trump's simplistic populist policies.

54 I'm on the fence about protecting women's sports with the law, for two reasons. First, as it stands, most male-only spaces are forbidden by law and those that aren't are frowned upon with enormous social pressure. This is a double-standard and has been for a long time. Male spaces are destroyed, female spaces are defended ruthlessly. I'm not fond of double standards.

Second is that the entire problem as such is supported by the overall feminist movement that demanded the changes that led here. I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to demand that they solve this problem themselves within their regulatory bodies. If girls on a football team are "heroic" and whatnot like that kicker, then why aren't boys on girls' teams?

I do, in fact, support legally defending girls'/women's sports so long as it's in the context of fighting the tranny shit as such (and it sometimes is) as the catastrophic social ill it is, but not doing so specifically for the virtue of continuing girls'/women's sports as such. Those that contributed to the problem should have a hand in solving it.

That is the propaganda discussing. I used to teach Chinese graduate students in public admin and simply put they are very cagey about expressing true opinions and quite adept at putting out whatever the party line was.

Every class had a minder or two and you can tell the intel/minder types because the other Chinese students kowtowed toward them and did their class work for them. The minders were by and large corrupt, lazy, pieces of shit that were awful people.

Left unsaid is that reuse is possible. If I had to guess, it's something like, "the first time you wear a pair of brand new jeans, it's the equivalent (somehow, insert questionable math here) of driving 6.4 miles in an SUV."

If so the follow-on is that, even with washing your jeans coming it at the equivalent (insert questionable math here) of some tiny fraction of a mile, each subsequent wear reduces the average as it approaches the maintenance minimum.

So like all things in the crazy mixed-up and deceitful world of environmentalism, the truly best way to "go green" is not to sweat production and transport but rather buy the most durability you can and keep your goods in service for as long as possible.

Exactly what you said!! Thank the lord! We admitted her for the weekend so they can handle getting her to potty and all that. Plus she's diabetic so just easier for them to be able to monitor that if she's isn't eating. But SOOOOOO much better news than I expected. We had all the other family dogs in the car at the vet in case it was time.

241 Hi Buck! I'm a lifelong Texan. I came of age in the 70's transitioning from HS years to college. I went to Armadillo once to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Yes... halter-tops galore, cold beer, and plenty of grass. I've seen all of the musicians you mentioned above many times. I enjoyed the 70's and the freedom of that era very much. Memories of bygone days. Sigh.
