First-World Problems...

stop777.jpg

Look...I understand how complicated an instruction this can be. I mean...you have to be able to read English, understand what the word "stop" means, translate that to the complex physical activity of stopping your car, AND comprehend that the thick white line painted on the street RIGHT NEXT TO THE WORD STOP is where you have to...um...STOP!

That line isn't just a good idea! It allows cars turning left to be able to negotiate the intersection without contortions. It also provides the sensors that control some intersections' lights with the information that there is a car in the (usually) left-turn lane. Too far from the line and the sensor won't detect a car, and the system will assume that no left turn arrow is necessary.

Is it a capital crime to ignore the stop line? Well, maybe I am a bit harsh, but yes. Although I wouldn't be averse to a 20 year mandatory sentence for the first infraction.

Many neighborhoods around here a few blocks off the main streets have intersections with no signage at all. It's supposed to be effectively a four-way yield but in practice it's "yield to the biggest *sshole" regardless of who gets there first or who is turning which direction.

If you have a green arrow, then you have the right of way. Bozo facing you is also facing a red light. Yes, he can make a right turn on a red, but he has to yield to any traffic that has the right of way.

60 The way it was explained to me, the driver approaching a stop sign is supposed to ensure that proceeding through the intersection is safe. That is not a measurable edict, thus the rules about stop lines and waiting three seconds comes from. That is also why if you are in the middle of nowhere on flat farmland at 4 am and roll through a stop you can be ticketed.

Heh. 4-way stops sometimes lead to a comic episode of "after you, Alphonse". Eventually it resolves when one or two drivers decide to go for it. Rarely results in a collision, though, because neither driver is going so fast he can't stop.

Because there was an Easter Vigil Mass last night, this morning's 7:00 AM Mass was cancelled. So the first Mass this morning was the 8:30. While some attendance was hived off last night, this morning we had the usual attendees from the first two services combined. Considering the church for each one individually is pretty full, you can imagine how packed it was.

There was a very long line for Confession; if there wasn't a last minute, nothing would ever happen. Either someone was confessing after 50 years or was an axe murderer because the line didn't move for the longest time.

You know, folks, none of you is a monster so it's not that hard. Did you do something wrong? Say what it was with a minimum of explanation or excuse. Are you sorry you did it? Say so. Are you going to do it again. Say you're not. Do you want absolution? Say so. That's all you have to do. If the priest wants to say something he can, but at least you're not holding up everything.

91 I used to have to deliver safety talks to drivers. The National Safety Council advised that when you stopped for a "stop bar," it should be far enough back to see the painted line over the hood. This will enrage some drivers of course, but, in the times I've done it that way enough to remember it, it has saved me from being clipped in the front end quite a few times.

On the business of having to nose out to see cross traffic, any annoyed cop will explain that it's legal to do that, after you've made the full stop at the indicated point.

93 Roadways are marked according to the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices & Street Signs. I'm pretty sure I'm on double figures of getting out of traffic tickets by applying that reference and how those that set up the signs, lights, warnings etc. didn't comply.

On the photo you provided...that "STOP" written on the road. It's not valid or enforceable...unless there is a traditional stop sign at the required location (without obstruction from tree branches etc and at the proper angle, height etc).

My point is that most roadways are NOT marked properly. There is even an exact location for the lines showin in this photo...and guess what....it's too far front. Not enforceable.

100 We got roundabouts recently, three in fact. Now that people are used to them they are mostly better than the 2way-cross-traffic-doesn't-stops that were there before.

It's basically a 4-way yield.

101 76 I have a first world problem. We used to use the free grocery bags to line the trash can under the sink. Since the exofascists have managed to ban plastic bags in some many stores, Ive had to buy bags.
The 8 gallon bags with tie up edges fits and is the cheapest option. But they tend to slide into the trash bin when something weighty gets tossed in.

Allotment of rights of way stemmed from land practices of the Northwest Ordinance, and following territorial doctrine, in the US. The less land that was used for interchanges, the more there was to sell, paying off war debt and funding education. It said here.

In some other nations, real estate by default belongs to the Crown. Great strides were taken after "Kelo." Literally taken.

Well, they are becoming commonplace. They are all over the Metro Phoenix area, and elsewhere in Arizona. Mostly well-implemented, save for a couple near Wickenburg. And back home in Alberta, they are popping up all over where two secondary highways cross. Usually, a net timersaver, in my experience. Logic would dictate, short of a stop sign or yield in the roundabout, that traffic coming into it would have to, at a minimum, yield to traffic already in it. The again the French aren't always the most logical.

GPS itself cannot snoop, because I am pretty sure the GPS satellites cannot receive signals sent out by ground units, nor can ground units send any. The spy gadgets, like GM's OnStar, communicate via the cellular networks. So if the truck does not have a baby shark fin on the roof, it probably cannot spy on you. My 2008 Suburban does not have OnStar, but it was available then.

233 Four way stop signs. I yeild to car on right, as was correct. Came to full stop on my motorcycle. Balanced, didn't have to put foot on ground, like a bicycle. Traffic cop laughed and wrote a (bullshit) ticket. Black cop, white rider.

237 LOL. I remember when I was 17 or 18 and my mom got a ticket for rolling through a stop sign.

Hilarity ensued.

238 problem with roundabouts is the lack of standards.

You're spot on, but keep in mind, many of the problems they're trying to solve came from lack of, or overlapping, standards in the previous modes. First complaint of midwest cities is that they started out as a wide spot on a trail, then developed around railroads when streets would never have more than a two-horse team on them. Those intersections couldn't handle semis, either.

240 Do you always run stop signs?
_I don't run stop signs.
You've ran the last four stop signs.
_No, I didn't.
You rolled through them.
_I always perform a rolling stop unless there is another vehicle at or approaching the sign.
Right.

241 Go buy a neodymium magnet and put it on your frame to help.

You haven't lived until you've tried to take an Avanti through an automatic car wash.

FWIW, my first trip with my 'new' 63 Studebaker was in Quebec, and yes I had a little car trouble. I was outside the famous places, the the local people could not have been nicer. I've related the story before, so won't go on and on, but I thought it the finest foreign country I'd ever been in.

242 23 Most people cannot drive a lick because they were never taught how to drive. They have never had a class on driving and their idiot parents, who most likely "taught" them how to drive, are asshole drivers too.

So you got asshole drivers teaching their asshole offspring how to be asshole drivers and this is what goes on today.

Be careful out there, lotta assholes on the road.

245 Ah, but what is the punishment for LEAVING a big thick white stop line when the stop sign has been removed? I think it should be at least a week in the stocks, with bonus rotten vegetables (in season). I encountered a rogue stop line when I was a very novice driver and was in an utter panic I had MISSED A STOP SIGN but my mom, in the car with me, assured me it was not a hallucination and I would not go to jail. That time.

246 A traffic school cop once said (many decades ago...):

Do you know how we determine if you stopped at the stop sign?

Your wheels quit turning.

It is amazing how often we don't. I try to be specific about it. My sweetheart says I'm gonna get rear ended.

247 One of the most annoying features of most self-driving software is that it ACTUALLY STOPS at stop signs. Annoying because human drivers don't... they slow to a crawl, and then, if there isn't any conflicting traffic, they pull ahead!

About a year ago, Tesla threw away their self-driving code and started over with an end-to-end neural net that learned how to drive like a person, from watching videos of people driving (well). The more human-like behavior is noticeable, and there are reports of emergent behaviors appearing, like allowing a car signaling to parallel park extra space, rather than pulling up right behind him!

When you hear someone who has test-driven a Tesla for hundreds of miles say "Where did it learn THAT?!" it is pretty weird! Hang on folks - it's going to get weirder still!

249 I realize this post is not really about being able to read "stop", but the red stop sign with English letters is almost universally adopted no matter the country.
