21 Pandora, one of the competitors to Spotify, started off as "The Music Genome Project"

The idea was that like living beings, music has clear building blocks, and therefore people would like music that has similiar building blocks to the songs they already liked.

And to prove this Pandora broke songs down into elements and had people decide if they liked songs or not thinking this would prove their theory.

And...it failed. You'd pick some artist/song you liked and they'd serve up ones with similiar elements and there was very little connection in whether people would then like the new song.

113 I was watching Jordan Peterson interviewed by a feminist academic on "The Psychology of Attraction"

The fascinating thing is while she is respectfully she keeps interrupting him to register disagree with one study or another he is referencing, note, never disagreeing with any sort of fact but in each case because she "felt" it was wrong.

One interjection caught by attention amazed me. Peterson was discussing Buss's work on female attraction to status and competence and the interviewer said that if evolutionary psychologists ever bothered to ask women they'd get a different answer in that women were attracted to things like a good build or...a large penis.

And the reason this just has me shake my head is no one, not Buss, or really anyone, has ever argued women don't care about looks as well. The argument is they also care about things like status and competence and in general they consider them more important.

Consider, for example, Christian Grey, or similiar figures of female fiction are rich, intelligent, and physically attractive.

117 Evening.

Judas Priest, Motörhead and Saxon predate the NWOBHM by several years. Iron Maiden is the only band to be part of that era but I've seen it argued they came a bit late.

Armored Saint isn't power metal. Savatage...uh...Savatage is harder to pin down. Not power metal but...not sure what subgenre they would belong in. You can argue they're progressive, maybe. Sometimes a metal band just falls under good old fashioned heavy metal.

As for the timeline it seems to indicate black metal predates death metal but black metal came a few years after. It's probably cuz Venom had something to do with naming the genre by way of their album, Black Metal. Venom themselves, however, have sweet fuck all to do with black metal and were, in fact, part of the NWOBHM. Behemoth is not black metal either but are instead death metal.

They should be under Progressive Metal, but for some reason on the chart that genre doesn't start until the late 90s.

Also, under Hair Metal:
Def Leppard should be under NWOBHM, although I guess you could argue that Hysteria is hair metal.
Poison is Glam Metal, which isn't on the chart.
Motley Crue's Theatre of Pain is Glam Metal, but the rest of their stuff, along with Guns & Roses, should be in some other category that I don't think has a name... call it LA Metal or Leather Metal or something.

Also, they didn't give any examples for Thrash, but I notice they didn't have Speed Metal or Crossover, so I guess they're lumping Slayer and DRI under Thrash.

And there should be a lot more subcategories of Punk.

But maybe I'm nitpicking.

Agreed Mike. I'm now listening to "Homeword Bound" w/ Christine singing. Now that she has passed it seems very poignant. She sings about longing for home after being on the road.

She died too young, 70 something. I always preferred her to Stvie Nicks who everyone thought was sexier. Well sure, Nicks was better looking, but Christine had the sexier voice and turned me on more.

179 I didn't listen to that Peterson episode, I heard a later one and he was still het up about destiny

I mentioned a day or two ago that Peterson goes into debates with the people that the left tells us are the best and brightest and embarrasses them - and several people on AoS laughed and said essentially those people are still idiots.

Well...point taken but watching Peterson destroying Destiny...I submit that people like Cathy Newman are fundamentally smarter then leftwing youtube personalities like Destiny. This "debate" was embarrassing.

182 I have a feeling that the compiler of this list really had to agonize over whether to include The Clash or Ace of Base, and is probably still regrets choosing the former.

Related - while British R&B was definitely adopted from American R&B, the sad truth is that the Brits improved on it in a major way. I write this within a brief driving distance of the Mississippi Blues Trail and someone who greatly enjoyed Robert Johnson, B.B. King, and Howlin' Wolf. B.B. King more or less said that the Brits gave him the biggest boost in his career.

Generally in the morning, it would have downloaded a couple tracks I wanted and a bunch of the garbage the record companies were using to hide the good stuff. I was able to pick up a couple of things I really, really wanted. Plus, I was a considerate user. I would always look on itunes for a legitimate copy before I requisition ed a song.

One day, on my way to the bookstore, I heard about the music industry swooping down on unsuspecting Pandora users and the almighty fines plus confiscation of the computer. It broke my heart, but the first thing I did that morning was uninstall Pandora because it was on my work computer.

326 Debby Doberman Schultz,

That's a really lighter version of my Mom's. Plus I love lemon juice/zest in food; MicroPlane Zester for the win! She started with salt pork. I ate it as a kid but I can't do it now. She had onion slices, too, which I finally dropped. The Better Than Bouillon is better than the cubes which she used. If she put in an herb, I don't remember, probably oregano, but basil and lemon go together so well. Oh, and almonds were every so often. With me, they are every time. And she'd put in ham pieces if she had them. Real country string beans, sometimes with diced potatoes, even diced tomatoes. I make a lighter, more 'citified' version. Thanks to the bouillon, the beans are about as close to vegetarian as I want to get. But to me, it's the lemon juice/zest. Makes the beans so tasty. Reminds me of Greek potato wedges I've had in restaurants as they're made with lemon, too. Lemon just perks up so many vegetables. And a relatively cheap add.

Born and bred in the Deep South perspective - I think you'll like it. There's a little bit of difference from how they make it in the Carolinas compared to other Southern states, but the constants are black-eyed peas, rice, chopped onions, and sliced bacon. Ample room there to experiment with other ingredients. In my own experience, people will often serve cornbread, collard greens, or mustard greens to accompany the dish. Fried green tomatoes and fried pickles work good as well.

Traditionally, it calls for ham hocks, but some think that overwhelms the whole dish, and prefer thick-sliced bacon chopped up.

If you're interested in there, there are a ton of variations, and you can search and get in the details of the different spices and all that that can be used.

340 Publius -some folks use sausage, and some recipes call for field peas. It's one of those dishes where, so long as you get the peas and rice nicely combined, it's hard to mess it up. I think the bacon works well, but I've known folks who use turkey, and they swear by it. Got to make sure to include the onions.

If you've got a hankering for a dessert dish, check out the Mississippi Mud Pie. A lot, lot better than it sounds.

There is also a "Shrimp bog" version. It used boiled shrimp and bacon with rice.

There is also a big eatin' affair known as a "Shrimp-O-Bog". When I was kid and teenage, every year the SC state Farm Bureau had their convention at Myrtle Beach early Dec). Horry County (pronounced Oh-reee, BTW).

Things kicked off on a Thursday night with a big Shrimp-O-Bog. Basically, giant cauldron of boiled shrimp, then rice, SC hash, BBQ, and beans. Some other stuff.

They made it on site, and that took a day or two to get it all cooked and ready.

With me, black-eyed, field, purple hulls, and crowder peas are all about the same. There are some different types, such as Zipper cream peas I grew last year that taste more like butter (lima) beans than field peas.

Anyway, for our Hoppin' John, we'll used some of my purple hulls in the freezer.

343 This food guy with the fancy recipes is kicking my ass, and now I'm hungry.

So now what is the traditional Easter meal that you must share with us? Step up, son.

344 Purple hulls should work nicely. If it works for you, don't forget that eating Hoppin' John on New Years Day is a traditional custom for ensuring a happy and prosperous new year. In Mississippi, we just go with black-eyed peas, maybe with a little bit of pork thrown in for that same ritual.

BTW, for the "Shrimp-O-Bog" I mentioned SC hash. If you're not familiar with this, well it's like no "hash" you've seen or eaten. To me, that's what "hash" was, and when I see what others called "hash", it did not compute.

Anyway, there are as many variations on this as anything, and trying to look up something fast, here's a little video about it:
https://tinyurl.com/2y3slq5k

As you can see, cooking a big mess of hash is 48 hr affair.

347
Again, many variations of this hash. There are a few that are so good to me, I can't stop eating until I'm about to bust. It's like crack.

The Shrimp-O-Bog is like this. Big pots of hash, along with regular BBQ. Rice. Boiled shrimp. All sorts of sauces. Beans.

Now, fill your plate up that shit and just eat 'til you bust. Oh, and wash it down with Sweet Tea by the gallon.

Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein is probably the world's largest tax haven besides Switzerland, and their primary exports are prosthetics and collectible postage stamps.

It is a delightfully eccentric place - my favorite story about Liechtenstein is the one where the Swiss military, on field exercises, invaded Liechtenstein by mistake. Both sides pretty much just shrugged it off

350 After that video, it's a good thing I don't have daily access to SC hash or I'd be 450 lbs. Mighty fine looking eats.

Heh! Invade Liechtenstein and 5 minutes later you're in Austria.

352 Some French government types were checking the border with Belgium. Discovered that the local farmer moved some 'rocks' and increased Belgium's borders by 20ft. French officials explained that those rocks had a purpose and to please put them back. No harm done, war averted. Probably had some wine afterwards.

Funny you mention that country. I recalled the ruling family was one of the richest in the world. Found this...

"The survey concludes that the Liechtensteins, who inhabit Europe's smallest country, headed by Prince Hans-Adam II, are at the top of the table because of an art collection estimated to be worth a minimum of £1.95 billion."

355 >> Mighty fine looking eats.

There are as many different recipes for this stuff, many quite secret, as there are BBQ houses.

There are some variations that have a little too much mustard and vinegar for me. Some too sweet. But there are some that are just right, and I can indeed eat that stuff until I just bust.

My favorite is from an outfit called "Clyde Cone's" down in Ridge Spring, SC.

357 My future daughter-in-law is living here, she has been telling me about Clone Cones, served when the Iowa State Cyclones get a win, sadly their dream for this year has been extinguished. We went to Dairy Queen tonight to mitigate the damage, it happened last night, but she was sleeping.
