Music Thread: Jersey Shore Sound (The Way It Should Be...Not The Springsteen Style)

studcrocs.jpg

[From Garrett's 70s Disco look]

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes is a bar band. They know it. Their fans know it, and their success over more than 40 years is a testament to the power of simple rock and roll, well played and well performed.

Shockingly, when one checks the fetid swamp of the internet for Southside Johnny's (John Lyon's) politics, nothing comes up! Oh, I'm sure he is a reliable leftist, but he and his band don't shove their politics in my face, so I will continue to listen! Hell...I might even go see them, even though that apparently entails being around other people.

I'll even forgive him for Miami Steve van Zandt and Bruce Springsteen. After all, nobody's perfect.

Please keep politics and other assorted dreck out of the thread. Yeah...we are all all hyper-political, but for a couple of hours we can stay away from and just chat about fun stuff. It doesn't have to be music, it can be fish puns (although your fish puns give me a haddock) or complaining about your aunt who always arrives empty-handed for dinner.

5 Hiya Dildo!

I don't know that I will ever go to another large or medium sized venue to listen to music. Maybe classical at the Concert hall, but not much else.

Small venue, sit at your table and listen to an evening of music with less than 100 people is more my speed these days.

Too loud. Too expensive. Too many people who forgot how to behave like adults. Live music is pretty much gone for me.

6 Music thread! The Asbury Jukes are golden. Saw them at least six times live. What a show Southside puts on. Pure energy, sweat and great music. Throw in their awesome horn section and it's magical. Thanks, CBD.

22 I was really into concerts in the 70s. I saw The Who, Led Zeppelin (twice), Eric Clapton (twice), Carlos Santana, Humple Pie (my personal favorite), and even Frank Zappa (this last at Duke University; Zappa's band was quirky, but interesting, and the drummer was absolutely on fire for "San Ber'dino").

The last live concert I attended featured Muddy Waters, at a club in Raleigh, NC, sometime in 1976, I think.

49 When you said, "Southside," I immediately remembered this great old New Orleans-style jazz tune, "Southside," by Franz Jackson and the Salty Dogs. If you listen, you'll immediately hear how it was the source inspiration for, "Conjunction Junction." The trombonist is a genius, knowing exactly when to slide. And the rising arpeggio! So satisfying. I've listened to it a hundred times.

Modern Lovers
Ramones
Black Flag
Morphine
Sarah Vaughn
Robert Cray
David Thomas & the Pedestrians
John Lee Hooker
Irie
Julie and Buddy Miller

I know there are more, just don't remember at the moment. Drugs were probably involved in those earlier years.

73 Zac Brown and his band played in the KSU Snyder Family Stadium, the only time a non=football event was there.

Three groups were selected to do the concessions. My Flint Hills TEA Part Constitution Bee 501 (c )3 group was one of them. We were way older than the other groups, but we were on a mission to self-fund our next Constitution Bee.

It was crazy.. Beer was sold, for $10 a can. We sold, just in our group, $29,000 in beer. We were so busy we never even heard the band. I never want to look at a can of Appletini again.

95 There is some good country music out there, just got to search for it. It's not on the radio for the most part. I've been listening to RadioWV on YTube. If you like acoustic Applachia music, it's solid. Some of there stations on YT play similar stuff too. Bluegrass Country is a good streaming station.

Most of the numbers in regard to Beyonce's 'country' album is due to her cult like followers, so don't read too much into it. I think even Beyonce said it wasn't a country album.

Funny too. I was reading a story about a second 'Best of' album they were making. MSB wanted to call it 'We Never Heard of You Either' but the record company squashed that. Boring record company.

99 Different kinds of concerts here. Luciano Pavarotti, Jessye Norman, Renata Scotto, Andres Sergovia, operas, orchestras, operettas, etc. So many I can't even remember them all. That's how we spent our extra money during the 70's before our son was born. No pot smoke and everyone was well behaved even while demanding encores.

It always does my heart good when I run across a young'un who is preserving the ways of old. Case in point is 17 yr old Grace Bowers who plays in the Nashville area. Not a huge body of work showcasing her talents online yet but her playing Hendrix "Who Knows" caught my ear-

And recently her playing "Scuttle Buttin' " ala SRV popped up-

But the bills are piling up and the pop scene just ain't on the rally

174 Beyoncé grew up in Texas.

Yet, she doesn't seem very 'Texas'. ZZ Top she ain't. Not even Panterra.

Lizzy, I thought about that Alan Jackson song when I was talking to a friend about this earlier.

That song and “Murder on music row”

176 I think what Beyonce is doing is to parody country music- her point being, all it takes is to literally put on a cowboy hat

177 But watch- she'll be at the CMAs next time around

183 I first saw them at Newcastle City Hall in March 1977 supporting the excellent Graham Parker and the Rumour. A couple of months later I was back to watch Tom Verlaine’s Television supporting Blondie followed the next night by Nils Lofgren supporting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Double bills were damned (saw them as well) good in 1977.

My favourite Southside recording is still the “official bootleg”, allegedly restricted to radio stations but surprisingly easy to obtain. The live versions of Fever and Having a Party are particularly wonderful.

184 Great thread! I've been a Southside Johnny fan since the 80s. Only had a chance to see them once (great show) but I listen to their records all the time. Great band!

185 Southside has been my go-to since college in the 70s. Apparently he stayed home to run the Stone Pony while Bruce and Steve went on. You can find whole concerts of his from 1979 and thec80s online, and an acoustic show he does with BonJovi. He's a winner.
