Is the West In a Societal Death Spiral?

David Strom came across a paper by a sociologist arguing that yes, indeed, the West is in a societal death spiral.

The paper is written by Michaela C. Schippers, John Ioannidis and Matthias Luijks. Strom underlines the contributions of Ioannidis, who he says is one of the world's most-cited scientists "and one of the best." He wrote a paper called Why Most Published Scientific Results Are False, which I think I've seen quoted. The basic idea, if my memory serves, is that there are great rewards for positive scientific results -- "interesting" findings, unexpected correlations, and hypotheses verified -- and almost no rewards for what should be the most common result in scientific experiments. Things like "No result" or "no evidence supporting" a hypothesis.

He argues this incentive structure creates an insidious pressure to... massage findings. Puff up null findings into something that the media will quote.

At any rate, Strom quotes from his paper. I've borrowed some quotes. I've stripped out the voluminous citations to other papers.

My bold. Well, Strom bolded some too. I'm endorsing his boldings.

While the period before the COVID-19 crisis may have been characterized by relative policy underreaction to complex social problems, also referred to as "wicked problems," such as hunger and poverty, the current times may be characterized by overreaction to certain problems. The COVID-19 crisis seemed to be characterized by groupthink and escalation of commitment to one course of action, at the expense of other possible solutions. Initial low-quality decision-making was followed by decisions that made things worse. The sheer scale and severe disruption caused by these policies has increased inequalities, an important marker of societal decline.

Unnecessary crisis response as a form of policy overreaction may sometimes occur as a way to shape voters perceptions of a decisive and active government. Excessive action and exercise of control over societal structures, e.g., public health, may enhance centralization of power and decision-making, and authoritarianism. When governments make use of mass media to spread negative information, a self-reinforcing cycle of nocebo effects, "mass hysteria" and policy errors can ensue. This effect is exacerbated when the information comes from authoritative sources, the media are politicized, social networks make the information omnipresent, and dissenting voices are silenced. This may lead to a vicious cycle of ineffective dealing with crises, low-quality decision-making and dysfunctional behavior, intensifying the current crises and leading to new ones, and eventually societal decline and even collapse.

Indeed. I think these "overreactions" are occurring precisely because the "experts" have made so many mistakes recently, and are now loathe to confess to any more. So they double down and double down on what are clearly mistakes, hoping that if they just shout loud enough, and enlist enough government operators to silence the people speaking the truth, they'll get away with lying. Again.

When really, they would not be doubted very much if they just forthrightly admitted their errors. You know, like scientists and professional "experts" are expected to do.

People who admit errors are usually assumed to be generally right about the things they're not confessing error over. The fact that they confess error makes them more trustworthy, not less.

On the other hand -- you have our Failure Factories of the media, the universities, almost the entirety of the cowardly and competence-challenged Professional Managerial Class. They have made so many enormous blunders -- including going all-in on RussiaGate and Hunter Biden's laptop being a Russian fake -- that the public has turned against them decisively, and their brittle little egos can't take that.

So they just puff themselves up more and double down on past errors. And past lies -- they lie an awful lot for people "defending democracy" and physically incarnating Science Itself.

Reminder: The "experts" telling the public that a lab leak was ruled out as impossible (and the theory was RACIST to boot!) were actually telling each other, in secret Slack chats, that a lab leak seemed plausible or even likely, but they should lie about it for political reasons.

Trust your experts, trust your media class's choice of experts.

Nobody, but nobody, wants to even think about, much less cover, the chaos of the early COVID period.

Those of us who didn't gaslight the public want to think about it, and cover it.

They reveal top evolutionary virologists telling one another that they find the "lab leak" theory of the coronavirus's genesis plausible, but that, for reasons of politics -- they didn't want to give ammunition to people they saw as alarmist about some virus research -- they should steer journalists away from it. The messages also include specific discussion about how to manage then-New York Times public health reporter Donald McNeil.
McNeil, with those scientists' encouragement, became an early skeptic of the lab leak theory, before concluding it was in fact a possible explanation of COVID's origin. He addresses the Slacks in his new book, The Wisdom of Plagues, writing that the scientists "clearly misled me early on." McNeil is "disappointed, both in them and in myself, that I was so easily taken in."
But he muses on the challenge: "It's one thing to be lied to by a politician and fail to check it out. But on viral evolution, to whom do you go for a second opinion? ... If Albert Einstein assured you that nuclear fission is harmless, whom would you trust to quote saying, 'Einstein's dead wrong?'"

There were experts who said the lab leak hypothesis was not only plausible, but likely. But you didn't report on those people.

As usual, the media is plugged in only to left-leaning "experts" and chooses to report according to what socio-political narrative they wish to advance.

Now the substantive debate is a "stalemate," he writes, with both sides "hurling mud," and editors demanding answers "so they can assign analyses of which political candidates benefit."

What does this mean? My guess: He's complaining that after having pushed so many lies to the public, the public is demanding accountability for his dishonesty or gullibility (or both), and he wants to portray this as pointless score-settling.

Well, buddy, you "journalists" presume to dictate who can and cannot speak in public based on their accuracy and reliability. You can't just just hand-wave away your own mistakes and lies.

Yes, indeed. He should actually read some of real scientist, a physicist named Mr. Feynman. Mr. Feynman had a lot to say about this sort of thing. Stuff like it doesn't matter how smart you are, how big your name is, how elegant your theory is. If it fails when confronted with experiment, it's wrong, period.

And also, "I'm smart enough to know just how dumb I am".

And the main reason Neils Bohr and the rest hired young Feynman for the Manhattan Project was that he wasn't afraid to tell Bohr and the other big names they were full of shit when he thought so.

Honesty. Had a chem prof who lived in...PA? at one time. He told us how he was a judge at a science fair ONCE (they didn't want him back). Why?
There was some girl whose project was determining the protein content of the local sausages; all she did was weigh them, then removed the moisture and assume what was left was protein. He gave her a low score (I mean, what about the fat, for Pete's sake!), but the mayor and town council didn't like that he did that.

I feel like the headline doesn't really match the content, but the answer is: Yes. Most definitely yes.

And this death spiral started decades ago, possibly as long ago as the 1960s. That's when the left's insane and dangerous social pathologies began to take hold. We started coddling violent criminals, subsidizing failure and poverty, opening our borders to scumbags, fawning over Marxism, hating our own country, spending trillions we didn't have, and listening to smelly 20-year-old hippies.

Well, some of this is true. You will lose weight on Atkins, but there is an eventual downside to it. It is very hard on your liver long term. Many times, though I am sure someone will raise their hand and say they doubled their calories or something, but many times people reduce their calories and the weight loss is from the old tried and true calories in, calories out. Carbs are fuel for our bodies, especially bodies that are moving a lot. You would not put water in your gas tank and hope you make that 350 mile trip. The types of carbs we chose are important in terms of overall health. A cup of sugar versus a cup of whole grains are not the same.

We are designed for protein, grains, fruits and veggies. This whole concept of no fruit is insane. No one got fat eating too much fruit.

Medical school gives them a reference record of past trial and error humanity has accumulated for some time. They also tend to build up some personal familiarity by dealing with a lot of patients over time so they can be pretty decent at recognizing problems they've seen before.

But yes, otherwise it's not too different from using a medical text for diagnosis, just faster. And they can be wrong in their diagnoses the way an ordinary person might be wrong.

Mostly they have a bunch of books they've read describing various diseases, the symptoms, and treatment methods. Many diseases have similar symptoms, and treatment effectiveness can be inconsistent for reasons not really understood, so they're more or less guessing from a list of potential problems with a corresponding list of potential answers.

We do not need them in our diet. But it’s not going to hurt you to partake, either, assuming you don’t have a lactose issue. But you can live just fine without them. You can get calcium. In many ways that don’t involve dairy.

I personally eat dairy. I like a plain Greek yogurt with a ton of fruit chopped up and mixed in. Cheeses and bread are my kryptonite. My mom was French, after all! But I don’t drink milk, ever.

It is and it isn't. A lot of the parameters are unproven (e.g. how much a given CO2 concentration in the atmosphere causes warming) and the climate Scientologists run the computer models with a wide spread of parameters and only hype up the ones that show catastrophic warming.

The parameter sets not showing a "climate crisis" have actually done a decent job tracking real temperatures over the last 30 years but of course there's no grant money in saying nothing bad is happening.

Bear can literally eat anything. Full diapers (baby and adult), metal cans, rubber hoses, clothing and plastics. They tend to eat what they find and they have a sensor in their nose area which trains the bear's brain to "map" his routes where food is found on a continuous basis.

Bears can have several routes in their brains which they take at different days/nights to feed the belly.

Soon, she was throwing out food for multiple bears that showed up at night. One night while on the phone with her son, she told her son that she could hear bears fighting and she was going to go investigate. She got back on the phone and told her son that an adult bear was threatening a cub. He begged her to stay away from them and stop feeding them. She didn't. They found her body eventually near her home in the woods mostly eaten.

I don't think it's that complicated. Japanese movie industry saw the success of "monster" movies like Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and wanted to duplicate it. They couldn't afford the stop-motion tech, so they put a man in a monster suit. I think the nuke angle -- again, it was already being used in American movies -- was added because it was new to Japanese movies and they were still very scared of it.

That is so great you have lost weight!, assuming you needed to do so. I couldn’t fast if my life depended on it, and always in awe of people who have the will power to do this. You are, in effect, cutting calories. I don’t eat refined sugar except on the rarest of occasions, I don’t eat processed foods. But I eat a ton of food. I weigh less than my wedding date, less than high school, but I was always a little chubby, average size 8 or 10. The lowest I got in high school was about 143, which is what I weighed when I got married to the jerk. fluctuate between 125-127, and wear a 4. I was 195, though, for a good while and that was no beueno! I am pretty sure you are smaller than me, from past convos. People have different body types and we have to account for that. I am short, so my weight compacts. Joy!

His previous two films dealt directly with the war. The first was a biopic of Yamamoto where he was held up as the hero who had to do his duty because it was his duty despite his warnings against going to war with America. And they play out the same as covid: nobody wants to admit a problem, the data always says everything is good, and alot alot of executives have split loyalties, making problem solving that much more difficult. A newbie to supplier quality troubleshooting falls for the experts, is wowed by their lingo and data, and never finds the problem. Anyone seasoned knows the answer is in getting data (not following) and no possible cause is left off the table until the problem can be replicated. You don't need to be an expert in virology, you just have to be disciplined , willing to ask tough questions, and willing to acquire data until the true cause is replicated.

At the end of WWII, the Japanese leaders (at least some of them) concluded that they had overestimated the impact of will and underestimated the impact of technology. My point? Beats me.

The original movie was the Japanese attempt to defect blame for WW2 to others. Japan is a shame society, NOT a guilt society like the West/USA was at that time. People don't understand Japanese culture.

Still today, the Japanese don't know their OWN devastatingly evil (Mongol levels of sadism) history as it was not taught them. They even today seem confused when Chinese display great hatred back to them.
