Split-Second Decision by Hero Police Officers Saved 'Numerous Lives' in Baltimore Bridge Disaster

According to The Baltimore Banner, the Dali sent a distress signal as it began to lose power, which was picked up by the Coast Guard.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police then stepped in to contain the situation.

The officers were monitoring the stricken container ship Dali as it experienced a power failure and drifted disastrously off course towards the Key Bridge.

At 1:27 a.m., a call came over the dispatch radio that the Singapore-flagged Dali cargo vessel had lost steering and was on a collision course with the bridge. “There’s a ship approaching that just lost their steering. So until they get that under control we gotta stop all traffic,” the dispatch officer stated over the radio.

A second officer quickly moved into position on the south end and successfully stopped northbound traffic.

These two as yet unnamed MTA officers, with a bare 90 seconds warning, managed to close the bridge and ensure that there was no traffic when the boat hit. They even remembered the work crew that was on the bridge and started to go get the workers, but they just didn't have time, and 6 of the 8 men who were working on the bridge lost their lives. Many commuters could have joined them if not for the quick thinking of the officers. I'm glad to see the officers getting the recognition they deserve.

Related: The effects of the Baltimore bridge collapse will be horrific. Let me break it down.

How will the complete shutdown of a port that employs 15,300 people directly and 140,000 overall affect a city of a half-million people like Baltimore? What about the loss of $400 million in taxes for a state that's already facing a budget crisis?

And once businesses redirect their routes to different ports and work out the logistics, how many will come back to Baltimore in the years ahead?

For car and light truck traffic, there are 2 tunnels you can take instead of the bridge. For heavy trucks, the option is to go west around the city on the beltway. It will add about 20 miles to your trip. All 3 routes are already crowded, the extra traffic is going to increase commute times dramatically.

The bigger problem is the loss of the port. Baltimore harbor is shut down (see map), all of the port facilities are behind the bridge. That's 450 million in lost tax revenue for a city that's already financially teetering. Couple that with the 150K jobs that depend either directly or indirectly on the port traffic...It's bad. Really, really bad.

America’s Stunning Embrace Of Paganism Signals The End Of This Country As We Know It

So if we have entered a post-Christian era in the West and are facing a return, in modern guises, of paganism, what does that mean for America? It means the end of America as we know it, and the emergence of something new and terrifying in its place.

America was founded not just on certain ideals but on a certain kind of people, a predominantly Christian people, and it depends for its survival on their moral virtue, without which the entire experiment in self-government will unravel. As Christianity fades in America, so too will our system of government, our civil society, and all our rights and freedoms. Without a national culture shaped by the Christian faith, without a majority consensus in favor of traditional Christian morality, America as we know it will come to an end. Instead of free citizens in a republic, we will be slaves in a pagan empire.

Perhaps that sounds dramatic, but it is true nevertheless. There is no secular utopia waiting for us in the post-Christian, neopagan world now coming into being — no future in which we get to retain the advantages and benefits of Christendom without the faith from which they sprang. Western civilization and its accoutrements depend on Christianity, not just in the abstract but in practice. Liberalism relies on a source of vitality that does not originate from it and that it cannot replenish. That source is the Christian faith, in the absence of which we will revert to an older form of civilization, one in which power alone matters and the weak and the vulnerable count for nothing.

What awaits us on the other side of Christendom, in other words, is a pagan dark age. Here, in the third decade of the 21st century, we can say with some confidence that this dark age has begun.

Hmmm... There's something I read once...it's right on the tip of my tongue...

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

-John Adams

Oh yeah, that's it.

State of Canadian Armed Forces' combat readiness growing worse, government report warns

Only 58 per cent of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) would be able to respond if called upon in a crisis by NATO allies right now — and almost half of the military's equipment is considered "unavailable and unserviceable" — says a recent internal Department of National Defence (DND) presentation obtained by CBC News.

The presentation, which touches on everything from readiness and equipment to recruiting and ammunition supplies, is dated Dec. 31, 2023.

It's the latest comprehensive snapshot of the state of the military.

The overview paints an alarming picture of the forces' decline in readiness — one that's even worse than the figures presented in last year's federal budget documents.

We failed in 1812, but things are looking good if we want to have another go at capturing Canada.

Yes, they've got either a bunch of trolls or one guy socking e.g. a leftist, a white power type, et alia regenerating Disqus accounts with every banning -- probably every second day or so.

Disqus report them/him as applicable e.g. for hate content; just posts an IMAGE, call it spam; no actionable Disqus complaint, then report him for Impersonation that might stick as a complaint from a new account with only a few comments made ["That's not the real J*hnny!"]. Clear the channel, resume port operations while rebuilding the bridge from both landward ends, with an alternate shipping channel, then open the alternate channel and rebuild the new bridge over the old channel.

72 B'more should roll the dice, and make this an opportunity

For the length of time that the port remains closed, and till be bridge is rebuilt and back in service...use that time to do ALL the maintenance on the docks, piers, warehouses, container handling cranes, truck scales, and etc.

Widen and deepen the berths at those piers, set them up to handle the larger ships coming from the 2nd Panama Canal.

In short, kick the ports' ass into becoming the most high-speed, low-drag, cargo handling Super Port on the entire East Coast.

75 I understand that it will take time to rebuilt a bridge. But the harbor doesn't require a new bridge to resume operations - just a clear waterway. How long could it take to cut up/drag the broken pieces out of the way?

What's Up With Shipping has a new video that touches on that. The upshot is that there are at least 3 major jurisdictions and 3 salvage companies involved and no one person/entity that's actually in charge of the whole thing, so expect a clusterfuck.

Tugs are staggeringly expensive, thousands of dollars an hour. Vessel owners and operators will typically only use tugs when a) conditions necessitate it or b) rules and regs require it. Neither applied here for an outbound transit once the ship was in the channel and under own power.

There was supposed to be a tunnel where that bridge was, they'd even started digging it. Then some bright engineer told the Democrats a bridge would cost like 1/4th as much and they could pocket the rest of the money.

Maritime experts had a betting pool on when a ship would knock that bridge over, because it's the only major port in the world with a bridge across the main shipping channel.

130 "The Sidney Sherman Bridge (Houston, ship channel bridge) is outfitted with fenders along and in front of its piers, which are designed to prevent damage to the structure.

Even with the fenders in place, the Sidney Sherman Bridge is no stranger to ship collisions.

In 2001, a freighter's cargo boom struck the northbound side of the 135-foot-tall bridge, bending an outside support beam and sending chunks of concrete into the ship channel.

Just a few months earlier, three people were injured when the crane on a freighter punched a 10-foot-wide hole in the bottom of the bridge.

As Houston police officer T.L. Burnett put it at the time, “It caused a huge hole, enough to swallow a whole vehicle.”

“TxDOT works closely with local and regional partners, including the U.S. Coast Guard and Port of Houston, to help prevent ships and barges from colliding with bridges,” the spokesperson said. (Duh)

Also never knew that the ruins of Fort Carroll, a 3.4-acre, hexagonal island, are nearby the bridge. The fort was created in 1848 under the supervision of Robert E. Lee to protect Baltimore from naval attacks. It was abandoned years ago and now the birds own it.

Chris Williamson was interviewing Alex O'Connor who is sort of the anti-Jordan Peterson in that he has a similiar thoughtful demeanor and way of coming to answers but he believes all the opposite things.

He had a debate with Peterson and noted at one point that of course life would be better overall if everyone believed in Christianity, but in his case he doesn't.

And I think the deists among the Founders knew this as well. A Christian populace would govern itself far better then an atheist or even agnostic one...

Between the Port of Baltimore and Newport News Virginia you have an armada of crane ships and tug boats within 2 hours of the bridge. Add to that they probably have the highest concentration in America of welders certified for underwater cutting and divers that do mechanical work.

The real problem is the legal battle over who gets to do the work. It will be weeks before they come to an agreement on which contractors have the proper kickback offer to get the work. Then the union workers who didn't get the job have to negotiate how much they get paid to not work. All of this needs to be done before they get started.

I bet 8 tugs could have that dragged out of the way in a day.

Martini Farmer at March 28, 2024 10:34 PM (Q4IgG)

Quite correct. There's actually two (technically four of you want to really get into the weeds) as the 710 crosses Terminal Island. You're probably thinking of the Vincent Thomas bridge on the west, beautiful span. I've got some great photos. Gateway bridge is on the east side.

Both however along with 710 are in the back half of the port complex, losing one would be a major inconvenience but would not close the port.

340 All one needs to do is look at the appalling way the Canadian government treated its citizens who peacebly assembled and petitioned their government for a redress of grievances. Not to mention its cheerful sanctioning of murder so government can continue pampering and babying its citizens with "free" medical care.

With the exception of some based Canadians who read here, or lurk here, or awesome people like AOP who frequently post here, most Canadians cheerfully permit this state of affairs to go on. To paraphrase the Texas Declaration of Independence, I have reached the melancholy conclusion that Canadians have acquiesced in the destruction of their liberty, and are unfit to be free, and incapable of self-government.

Get them out of NATO. And NORAD. Until they come correct.

363 Did you see the size of the cargo on the ship that hit the bridge?
Posted by: JackStraw at March 29, 2024 12:16 AM (LkLld)

I think the hazardous cargo was a relative handful of containers, mostly some flammables, and lithium ion batteries.

My guess is they will drag the boat to a harbor after disentangling it from the bridge.

365 I got into music shortly after CDs became relatively affordable. I honestly thought "Who's Next" was a Greatest Hits album. Probably my second favorite album behind Dire Straits Brothers in Arms.
Posted by: Chuck C at March 28, 2024 11:24 PM (yOPBE)

That record came out in 1971, when I was 15-years-old; I actually pity the young kids today when it comes to 'modern' music. My teen music is now being covered by all the 'music reaction' videos, so I know I'm definitely 29. But, yes, 'Who's Next' is a greatest album, not just album of their greatest hits; you put put the needle down on any track and it was a winner. And I agree with the Moron above who said 'By Numbers' is criminally underrated. I must agree. 'In A Hand Or A Face':

All the history of a soul in torment
Ingrained in a hand or a face
Ain't it funny how they all fire the pistol
At the wrong end of the race

Really good lyrics, as it often the case with songs by The 'ho.

368 Catch Thirty Thr33, you make a number of good points, but absent some incident not made public, Canada has a solid record as a member of NORAD, and I'd prefer any help we could get in keeping the North American continent safe. Our interests coincide there, and even strategic Realists, the most cynical analysts of global security issues, wouldn't see any point in severing a tie that seems to be working well.

Canada's right of self-determination as a sovereign state has not always played out to their benefit, but I'd much sooner bet on their chances for working out a future that favors individual rights and freedom than that of any of our neighbors to the south.

Regarding NATO, Canada's role as a member of that alliance is something that they, in their capacity as a sovereign nation, agreed to in 1949. Lester Pearson, the Canadian Secretary of State For External Affairs (and later Canadian Prime minister) was one of the key authors in the work of negotiating and drafting the NATO Charter. This was something of vital importance to the US and the Western world at the time, and Canada is one of the major reasons it came into being. /1

I think there's a reasonable solution here - the question should be put to the Canadian people and decided via an electoral referendum. If they want to withdraw, they withdraw. If they want to stay, we have every right as strategic partners to establish the degree of commitment that would be required from them. In fact, if we urged that with other NATO members, there's a possibility of establishing a viable security framework that fits the realities of 21st century geo-political realities.

Putting that together would be difficult, although some leftists might be snookered into joining the push. If it ever gets to the point where votes could be tallied, that could be a basis for re-visiting the NATO Charter and hammering out the basis for a more realistic security arrangement.

399 I am listening to a breakdown of the NTSB report on the Wings over Dallas mid-air fatal collision between the B-17 and P-63F. The Air Boss, Royce, needs to be staked out in the desert, coated in honey, and a giant magnifying glass placed over him.

The stream swap between fighters and bombers was not briefed prior to show. There was no adequate separation in altitude between the streams.

The Air Boss was located where he could not adequately see what was happening at the incident end of the runway.

The Air Boss was using non-standard terminology over the radio to both streams while trying to direct them.

While the Air Boss was directing the fighter lead to the 500ft line and warning the B-17 lead where the P-51s were located there was a PT-17 with a passenger landing under them.

So what were the qualifications for the Air Boss? He was the son of a CAF air boss. He only had 1,800 hours flight time with none in military aircraft or in air shows. He had a tower license based on two years at a military tower. And his primary job is working at a body shop.

418 Using Microsoft Flight Simulator to reconstruct the accident flight, one thing becomes apparent. The P-63F had basically one chance to spot the B-17G "Texas Raider" IF the pilot had taken his eyes off the two P-51s he was following at low altitude and looked out his right door window to pick out a green painted B-17 that would have been below him.

That is a big IF.

So was Wings over Dallas an aberration? The answer is no according to the NTSB. Earlier there was Wings over Houston. I think it was Royce the father running this show. And he called for two questionable actions. First he had an Me 262 fly head on at a B-17 and pass a few hundred feet under the bomber. Then he had a P-51 fly BETWEEN a B-17 and a C-47 that had about 2000ft separation.

At Houston they got lucky. That luck ran out at Dallas killing people and destroying two airplanes.

Saw some clip of a presser held by black group in Chicago (inside a government building?) threatening the Democrats that, given their disdain for blacks, the convention might not be very peaceful.

Been saying for a while now once the 'hood starts to riot over the bullshit going on, it's all over for the Dems. No way to spin 'white supremacy' though I have no doubt they will mightily try to do just that.

440 Catch Thirty-Thr33, I assure you that I am indeed aware of Canadian history and politics, and I also assure that there's no animus on my part - if I came across in that fashion, then that was completely unintended. We're all on the same side here (except for Raimundo, if indeed he/she/it isn't just a bot). We all want what's best for our nation both now and in the future.

Canada's current leadership at the federal level is not entirely friendly to us, and that may extend to some degree to the Provinces and the Territories. But that state of affairs is not guaranteed to last, and in the meantime there's a lot of hemispheric issues where our nation and theirs need to work together. On NATO, the US could easily raise the issue of Trudeau's statements in session with the other member nations and that would then become something where Trudeau might have little choice but to declare an election. However the election might go, it's a win for the US. Trudeau goes, both we and Canada share a victory. If he stays, then it's fair game to introduce a motion before the assembled members of the NATO nation for a decision on the future membership and make-up of the alliance.

I doubt an ordinary camera-equipped drone could take out an airliner; simply not massive enough. At most, it could take out one engine if the engine ingested it. Nevertheless, any dickwad operating a drone in controlled airspace should be shot.

Check out the focus on the drummer, something more than 2 min. in. He was DELIVERING. Why?

He'd learned that his estranged Dad, who kicked him out because he'd chosen 'music" as an avocation, was in the audience. After somethinnteen years.

He LAID IT ON, and ROCKED the kit.

Knopfler looked up at the drum set, and nodded a respect.

The fact they could perform 'Close to the Edge', all 18:43 seconds of it, live remains impressive to me.
