27 Oh, it is St Dominic. It must have been painted for a Dominican chapel. [Dominicans wear black and white robes.]

The Crucifixion is a life sized painting by the Venetian artist Titian, completed in 1558 and presently hanging in the sanctuary of the church of San Domenico, Ancona. Jesus Christ is shown crucified, with Saint Mary and Saint John standing either side of the cross in the Stabat Mater tradition. The kneeling figure is of Saint Dominic. The canvas was completed during Titian's fifth decade of painting, and is one of the works marking a shift toward his extensive exploration of tragedy and human suffering. [Almost 2 yards x 4 yards]

28 I always thought that Good Friday was a misnomer until I saw the BC strip discussing the why of it. "How do you feel knowing that you don't have to suffer like that because your Savior took it from you?" We don't deserve that mercy, of course, and the price paid for us is WAY more than humanity as a whole is worth, but knowing that God so loved the world that He made that path to reconciliation with us... it's the greatest act of sacrifice in history, on a level beyond what we can appreciate or understand. God is good.

34 I grew up with Catholic kids. Yet I don't recall ever hearing about the Stations of the Cross tradition, the fourteen paintings or sculptures depicting the day of the Crucifixion, until I was a grownup. Don't know why. I guess my classmates and friends all thought I knew about it and there was no need to talk of it.

St. Louis Cathedral, the big church in the French Quarter, has its Stations plaques labeled in French. And I remember a church in San Luis, CO, with their plaques in Spanish. San Luis has the series of bronze sculptures, life-size or nearly, along a path up a hill on the edge of town, leading to a small church at the summit.

41 Peter wouldn't have been there. John is unique among the disciples in that he stuck there during the Crucifixion. Peter was busy claiming that he didn't know ANY of these people until the cock crowed, then was consumed by guilt that never quite went away, up to the point where he said he was unworthy to die as Jesus had at his OWN crucifixion and asked to be crucified upside-down.

Yet as we came in, she stepped to one of the fonts, dipped up some water, and crossed herself.

I raised my brows. She muttered, "Don't tell my father I did that" (he was a notorious atheist).

Then, realize what it would take to commit your only begotten son to die at the hands of people who have no love or appreciation for you, so they can have a promise of reconciliation. 79 The Crucifixion, Tiziano Vecellio

There is another Crucifixion by Tiziano Vecellio. (The figures at the foot of the Cross are absent.)

Web Gallery of Art, "Particularly impressive about this painting are the wonderful colours and the modulated lights on the body of Christ, as well as the carefully painted landscape, which is a rare feature in Titian's late work. The ruins, the city in the background, and the marvellous colours of the hills are reminiscent of Veronese's early landscapes. The cross, isolated in front of the broad landscape, gives the painting a timeless quality that emphasizes its devotional function. The work's theme is not the moment of the crucifixion, but the loneliness of death."

Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio, Latinized as Titianus, hence known in English as Titian, was an Italian Renaissance painter of Lombard origin, considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno. Wikipedia

I chose this version because the other seemed so busy, in spite of it being a much finer work.

The roughness and simplicity of this is quite powerful. I think it focuses the mind and the heart on Christ's suffering while still illuminating its effect on others.

Obviously I'm not a Christian, but I find the various presentations of the crucifixion to be endlessly fascinating.

92 [Somewhat academic, of course, but:] My understanding is that Christ's (and other victims') feet were likely just a foot or so off the ground -- so that passers-by could look in their eyes (before they were pecked out by birds) as well as mock and/or assault them (if "the spirit" so moved them?) -- perhaps more accurately represented in this mid-15th century painting "The Crucifixion with Saint Jerome and Saint Francis" by Pesellino:

111 Chris Hayes explains 'the Trump plan to make everything more expensive'. As reports and surveys indicate a creeping nostalgia and collective amnesia about Donald Trump’s presidency, one of his worst ideas is gaining steam again: tariffs.

Chris Hayes spent the first part of his Wednesday night broadcast breaking down Trump’s campaign promise to add a 10% tariff to all imported goods. He explained how this cost “will just be passed along to consumers in a sales tax on every single good.”

With tax cuts that allowed billionaires to pay less taxes than working-class Americans, a mismanaged pandemic, and the worst jobs record in modern American history, Trump’s economic braintrust was an undebatable disaster.

Americans are feeling the brunt of “greedflation,” and Hayes’ segment aimed to warn voters already worried over the rising cost of living in the United States about the “Trump tax.”

“If you're a single-issue inflation voter, there is only one candidate who wants to put a 10% tax that will be passed along to consumers as a sales tax on every single good that's imported,” Hayes began.

118 There is, or was, a Catholic elementary school in the middle of the Quarter. In the month or so before I was to start school, I wondered aloud as we drove past it if that was going to be my school. My father, who had been educated by "the sisters" as locals used to call it, said, "Oh, no!" My mother explained to me later that he had hated going to Catholic school, as the nuns were so strict, and that he would never put his kids through that.

In grammar school, too, I had a couple of friends who occasionally got to leave early on school afternoons for something called "catechism." I, age nine, thought they were getting out to go play for some reason. Years later I saw Mrs. Wolfus No. 2's catechism book and realized how much they had to learn.

The inclusion of various Saints in devotional paintings is common. Usually they were the choice of the patron ordering the painting, such as using St. Dominic here for a Dominican church.
Another variant is the "donor" painting, where portraits of the patron alone, or with their wife and family were included in the devotional scene.

132 The only real solution to Bidenflation is to end Bidenspending.

Tariffs in isolation will increase the cost of goods where there are currently significant imports and generally spawn new domestic jobs and businesses in that market.

Now compare that to other taxes which generally just incentivize people to not work and not start businesses it is pretty clear that tariffs are better then income taxes.

Oh...and didn't the Democrats formally claim Bidenflation was being caused by the shipping container monopolies in '22? If that's true you'd want to tariff them to death right?

I saw something regarding this on the teevee many moons ago. 172 This is an 'issue' I take with entering the Kingdom of Heaven.

Those that have lived a horrible life, destroying lives and harming others have the option, even up to the point of death, of receiving Jesus into their heart and all is forgiven. Yeah, I know it's not the simplest of things, but still.
\

I suppose that might be part of the point of Purgatory. You'll get to heaven eventually, but you have to pay the piper first.

Naturally the bits in the trailers were chosen from among the best moments in the film, designed to get you into the theatre. Which is what all good trailers should do. Doesn't mean those are the *only* good moments in the film. Several of my favorite bits in the first GB film were quiet things that would never have been in a trailer, then or now. There's the foreshadowing discussion between Ray and Winston about resurrection and Judgment Day; the climactic moment when they are about to attempt crossing the streams, and Peter smiles at his long-time buddy and colleague and says, "See you on the other side, Ray."

Haven't watched it.

The whole thing of quick turnaround to other delivery methods indicating a bad film is about 30 years out of date, especially over the last 4 years.

Universal, for instance, sends everything to streaming in 30 days unless they actively make a decision to keep it in theaters longer (like they did with Oppenheimer, but that probably had more to do with Nolan's contract than anything else). Good, bad, mediocre, it all goes to Peacock in a month.

WB is in a cash crunch because of the massive overspending before Zaslav took over. They're out for cash flow, and licensing is a source for that.

282 There's nothing funny about Joe Biden!

On "The Daily Show" Monday night, Jon Stewart didn’t quite issue an apology to his many critics. Those critics were upset at Stewart for dangerously and inappropriately perpetuating "both-sidesism" when it came to dragging President Joe Biden and Donald Trump in equal measure. But the absence of any gags about Biden in the most recent episode suggests that Stewart has certainly heard the complaints. It’s never a bad thing when influential comedians acknowledge a mistake, even if they do so indirectly.

I've been a Christian for 35 years now, and God's love for us never ceases to astound. He just continually reveals himself by layers to anyone willing to look.

Thank you Lord.

Romans 10, or 11 it's been a while, discusses how Christians are "grafted in" to the root stock of Judaism. It's pretty clear that those currently using "Christ is King" to bait Jews haven't read the end of that passage in Romans.
