The governor of Oregon took a break from her busy schedule of - reportedly - day drinking and nervous breakdowns to sign a new right-to-repair bill that is actually good. (Ars Technica)

The legislation bans "parts pairing", where you not only need an exact replacement part, you need the exact replacement part, because all the parts have built-in clique identifiers and won't talk to interlopers.

The rules come in to effect next year, and exempt a few classes of device like medical devices, where there might be an argument for strict controls over repairs, and... Electric toothbrushes.

Amazon is investing another $2.75 billion into AI company Anthropic, developer of Claude. (CNBC)

If you haven't heard of Claude you are not alone, but it is a thing that exists.
FTX - what's left of it - is selling off most of its stake in Anthropic to raise funds to pay back customers. (Yahoo Finance)

FTX misused customer funds to - among other things - buy a $500 million stake in Anthropic.

That stake is now worth $1.35 billion, and may be the key to FTX customers getting all their money back.

13 Weather: 56 F., humidity not bad for this dump, stiff breeze out of the NW. Rare conditions for late March around here.

There's also a news story on the CBS outlet's website that three of our local bridges will close soon or already have for repairs. None are near me, but the one leading to a ferry that allows people in the SE area of the metro area to cross over to my side of the river, and the ferry itself, are closed. So I've been seeing more vehicles on the main bridge in the morning and afternoon.

We had a bridge over the big Industrial Canal partially collapse and kill one person thanks to a barge impact one afternoon in '93. Though I seem to recall something similar later, about '96 when I worked in an area serviced by that span. One of my coworkers said he crossed it only about five minutes before the barge hit it. . . .

16 Can't find the story about any bridge-barge impact from '96, just the story about the freighter that hit the riverfront shopping mall a week or so before Christmas that year. I had considered going down there (a Saturday) to do some shopping, and changed my mind at the last minute.

Maybe my coworker in '96 who escaped a bridge incident was telling about 1993, not a recent event.

49 Back from my shave & shower, and having breakfast. Yesterday I hit both Target and Walmart in a search for a new microwave at a decent price. The ones at a decent price at Tar-zhay were either too small, or didn't have their wattage on the box. I couldn't get any employee help (typical), so I left.

Found what I needed at WM, a Hamilton Beach 900-watter, same as the deceased unit. That MW, a Sunbeam, lasted me for some four or five years. This one seems to do just as well at what it's supposed to do.

If WM hadn't had anything, I was prepared to head to Best Buy (more $$).

Is the aye-aye of Madagascar a lemur? When I was small, I read in my Golden Book Encyclopedia about a legend, that someone who kills an aye-aye will die a year and a day afterward. I've never seen that repeated anywhere else, so I wonder where they got it.

A woman I work with has two young kids - 4 and 6.
Vaxed a couple of times and they are always sick. Always. They catch every dang bug that's going around, but also unusual stuff like norovirus and hand foot and mouth disease. And she had cholera this past year
