The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"The Prisoner Review Board must be able to operate independently as they review enormously difficult cases, but I believe LeAnn Miller has made the correct decision in stepping down from her role." Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D)

Quote II

“I can’t charge $20 for Happy Meals. I’m leaving no stones unturned,”
McDonald's franchise owner, Scott Rodrick
It is difficult for a business man to soar like an eagle when the ill informed anchors one down needlessly.

A couple of views on Israel........

&&&&&

Israel Has Created a New Standard for Urban Warfare. Why Will No One Admit It?

The Israel Defense Forces conducted an operation at al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip to root out Hamas terrorists recently, once again taking unique precautions as it entered the facility to protect the innocent; Israeli media reported that doctors accompanied the forces to help Palestinian patients if needed. They were also reported to be carrying food, water and medical supplies for the civilians inside.

None of this meant anything to Israel's critics, of course, who immediately pounced. The critics, as usual, didn't call out Hamas for using protected facilities like hospitals for its military activity. Nor did they mention the efforts of the IDF to minimize civilian casualties

It isn't being a parent. And practicing medicine is just that. Practice. Practice. And practice some more.

A mum is warning parents to throw out any electrical items that have button batteries after her baby swallowed one and was rushed to hospital.

Kiara West, 24, first noticed a problem when her nine-month-old daughter Rosantina West began wheezing on the morning of February 14.

Kiara’s husband Daniel West, 22, rushed Rosantina to the local ER where doctors sent her home with a nebuliser, suggesting she had RSV, a respiratory virus much like the common cold.

However, two days later Rosantina’s wheezing got worse, so the mum-of-two took her to Children’s Minnesota Hospital where an x-ray revealed a button battery was lodged in her oesophagus.

Did. Not. See. This. Coming. No, not at all. And it is not on my 2024 Bingo card.

A leading witness in the 2019 impeachment inquiry of then-President Donald Trump registered as a foreign agent representing Ukraine and the European Union (E.U.) on Thursday.

Gordon Sondland served as the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union from 2018 to 2020 and testified against Trump before the House of Representatives Select Committee on Intelligence in 2019, claiming that Trump sought to withhold foreign military aid to Ukraine unless it launched an investigation into then-former Vice President Joe Biden regarding his son’s business dealings in the country; Biden was running against Trump for the presidency at the time of the impeachment hearing. Sondland filed a registration statement with the U.S. Department of Justice, declaring himself a foreign agent of Ukraine and the E.U. in order to legally represent their interests in the country, according to a document obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

May the Good Lord have mercy on us if the Karens of the world take over.

A new draft animal protection law has suggested breeds with certain problems, including spinal injuries, could be banned.

Sausage dogs are known to struggle with back problems and can also easily become overweight.

The proposed move has been met with resistance in Germany, with the German Kennel Club (VDH) launching a petition to save the breed.

The VDH has argued that the law would be too open for interpretation when determining genetic defects.

So a hard working UPS driver meets a Rachel Corrie wannabe and Genius Award Winner.

A viral TikTok that was initially uploaded by user @Choriz93 is making the round of several other popular pages and it's not difficult to see why: it features a woman crawling underneath a UPS truck as a means of protesting the way her packages were being delivered.

She's damn lucky her household full of cats weren't orphaned by her award winning stunt. And lucky the driver is a nicer guy than I am.

Which one is Butch and which one is Fem. Or in this case, "It is good to be King and/or Queen depending on the day and hour I am asked."

The wife of Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek announced that she is in recovery from alcoholism and lives with mental illness.

The statement from Aimee Kotek Wilson comes amid a staff shakeup in the governor’s office and accusations of nepotism as Wilson’s role in the Democrat’s administration has come under scrutiny and criticism.

The statement comes on the heels of questions to the governor about her wife’s elevated role in the administration as well as a security detail.

OregonLive reported:

The governor has brought on a state-funded adviser to explore the possibility of forming an Office of the First Spouse and announced this week that she had ordered the Oregon State Police to provide her wife with a security detail while attending events on her behalf. The state-funded adviser, Meliah Masiba, will be paid $72,000 during the six-month rotation, the same rate that she has earned at the Department of Administrative Services. The governor’s office did not say how much the upgraded security protection will cost, but said the money would come out of the governor’s existing budget.

"None of this meant anything to Israel's critics, of course, who immediately pounced. The critics, as usual, didn't call out Hamas for using protected facilities like hospitals for its military activity. Nor did they mention the efforts of the IDF to minimize civilian casualties"

No one should be surprised that the Leftists are screaming for Israel to stand-down its operations to eradicate Hamas. They're the same Leftists who want to crucify every private citizen who fights back against a thug.

177 Jokes about Biden aside, the accepted story in my family is when summer hit and high school was out, my father and uncle would ride the rails. They'd come home in time for school in the fall. My Grandma had no earthly idea where they were for months. This was in the '30s; everybody was doing it.

Sort of like how in Dec. '77 I hitched from the NY/CT border to Boston and back; lot of snow and ice to stand around in back then. At one time, hitch-hiking was quite acceptable. Hitching was a little crazy in the '70s, but now? You'd have to be certifiable to do that today. Just like when I was a kid you'd have to have been certifiable to ride the rails.

Could be clickbait but it makes you wonder what with all the technology in use today and the fact we have so many illegals here for who knows what nefarious purpose and bringing a skill set to accomplish that. The Chinese deliberately gave the world the Wuhan Flu, creating a world-wide medical panic. What's to stop someone from tinkering with the technology running the ship and tweaking its course just a little?

201 Over bred animals: we had a GSD for 13 years. She developed hip dysplasia which led to arthritis in her hipg. We stuffed pain killers down her. Plus, she had a very young cat to keep her on her toes. My understanding of the breeding problem is that too many kids watched ringing in and begged for GSDs. Responsible breeders sold pet quality pups, but made sue the animal was either spayed or neutered before letting the pup go to a new home. It was the backyard breeders who didn't give a shit about what they sold that caused so many problems.

Cats have similar problems. The breed standards go to the extreme. Siamese heads narrow down so horribly much. Persian nose leathers and are supposed to be in a straight line with their foreheads. (And take my word for it -- they snore, although thankfully not as bad as pugs.)

It, and the bridge immediately adjacent, which it will replace, are both tall enough.

But the new bridge will allow for a vastly widened San Jacinto River, which is also being dredged deeper for the larger ships.

See me at 192. HAZMAT considerations are why the Key Bridge was built.
Original Harbor Tunnel opened in 1958. Second tunnel (Ft McHenry Tunnel) opened in 1986. Neither allow HAZMAT.
See me upthread also about the over-water approach roads still being intact. Replacement of the main span of the bridge is a must.

Apparently the Dali has a history of mechanical failures. If one wanted to wreak havoc in a seaport, and have plausible deniability, what better way to do it than follow such a trouble-prone, and take steps to cause an engine failure at a crucial time? Simply blocking the ship channel with a VLCC, run aground, would be havoc enough.

I'm not saying it is certainly sabotage, but to dismiss sabotage out of hand without a thorough investigation is short-sighted.

294 On the importance of RFK, Jr. to Trump's chances of winning:

1) The dozens of Biden/Trump H2H polls show Trump winning (at the moment, anyway) by 1.5%, per the RCP average. The MOE for these polls is 3% usually-- sometimes 2.5%.

2) But polls of the 3-way Biden/Trump/K race show Trump +3, i.e., outside the MOE, albeit barely.

Most analysts seem to think that K's VP pick Nicole Shanahan may ADD TO Trump's lead in the 3-way race, because she's a lefty enviro-loon who will drive away GOP-leaning indies who don't like Trump.

Well, all the fuel kept on going throught the carb, into the head and on into the crankcase. Drained the gas/oil out of the crankcase, refilled and pulled the spark plug wire. I cranked it a bit to circulate the oil, waited and did it again. Then I drained the oil and put fresh oil in it.

Put the wire back on the plug, opened the gas valve, watched the filter fill and cranked the engine. Then I cut the yard. That Craftsman mower is a year 2001.

Whether Wallace hurt Nixon more or Humphrey more is a never ending argument that can never be resolved. Wallace drew votes from Humphrey in the upper Midwest and from Nixon in the south.

Similar debate about Perot in 1992, altho the balance of opinion seems to be that Perot hurt Bush 41 more than Clinton.

Thus far in 2024, though, I haven't seen ANYBODY who thinks that RFK, Jr. isn't helping Trump. Certainly the DEMs think K is hurting Biden, because they're doing everything they can to keep K off the ballot.

Ours didn't bark constantly. The females roaming was a definite problem. The male usually stayed home, but only after getting out of his pen. After he killed a tooth lifting a gate off its hinges, and broke a toe scaling a 6 foot stock panel, Dad built "dogatraz" up closer to the house and Gabriel stayed there happily enough. Especially when Beau the cat would go hang out with him .

Neighbors had a Heeler and a Pit bull who would come through the field fence and harass Gabriel, retreating back through the fence when they started losing. One day he'd had enough and went *through* the field fence after them. Fortunately, Dad was there and called Gabriel back because he was about to put the Pit bull out of his misery. He came as soon as Dad called him and the two dogs kept to their own side of the fence after that.

Anyway, she spent two days in the hospital. They haven't figured it out. She can get around now. She was dehydrated they said, but MRI showed "white matter increases" in her brain compared to the last scans they had on file. They have her on some sort of cardio monitor now (the new ones just have a sensor that sticks on your chest, and a smart phone like device you just need to keep in range of).

Anyway, she went on a rant about the mRNA injectable products. Her doctor nagged and nagged her to take it. She did, and regrets it. About 3 weeks after getting it, she got Covid. And has now had it a total of 3 times since.

Rappelling off of a 28 story building, on gear that *I* had rigged, and no one else had touched? Sure, no problem.

DIVING over a 140 ft. chasm on gear I knew nothing about, and that someone else had (supposedly) "rigged" ?

It's just the state of the game. It's like a child, but on a grander scale, where you're dealing with a ton of adults, instead of one little guy you can judiciously spank from time to time. But the same standard holds - spare the rod and spoil the child.

A brief episode of sitting at the dinner table, talking, then sort of momentarily glitching, "blah, blah, bssuzzzzzpburbr....blah, blah". I even saw a brief left side facial droop. She recovered, the event lasted only a second or two.

467 The entire "is or is not terrorism/sabotage" lunacy is missing the forest for the trees. Namely...this is the Port of Baltimore. From a critical infrastructure standpoint, nationally, the port is a non entity. GSX coal will have to do some reroutes, if the channel is still closed six weeks from now Domino sugar will have some problems, and Mitsubishi and Subaru are having a bad day. The trucking snarl this will cause is bad, but not insurmountable. That's...about it.

Compare to, say, blocking the Sabine ship channel at the mouth. Two of the five largest refineries in America are cut off, and gas nationally jumps at least a buck a gallon overnight and continues to rise. The largest LNG export terminal in the country is down. The military loses a solid third of its outload capability through Beaumont and Port Arthur.

How about blocking Angels Gate at LA-Long Beach. Or God forbid hit the LPG facility in San Pedro. A tactical nuke would do less damage. Can do this all day, with a really long list of MCI/KI before getting within light years of anything in Baltimore. Yes, what happened was a tragedy. The cold truth is in the national maritime scheme of things, Baltimore is small ball.

According to the article, the woman who controls the right half of their body got married. Does the wedding ring go on her/their right hand, then?

I suppose so, since that woman doesn't "have" a left hand, and that's where you'd wear a wedding ring if you'd lost your left hand/arm. But then the ring isn't sending the "I'm spoken for" signal since she seems to have a left hand to everyone else.....

I got interested in the history of "mayday" as the standard distress call. It comes from the French "m'aidez"/"m'aider" meaning "help me".

Some Brit came up with it in the '20s, and anglicized it as "may day". Like the phonetic alphabet, the idea is to come with a spoke phrase (group of phonemes) that are easily recognizable and can be understood, without ambiguity, by everyone on the channel.

The standard format is "Mayday, mayday, mayday!", indentify your vessel, "Mayday, mayday, mayday", identify vessel, position, then description of emergency.

472 ...Rudder control alone won't help if you are drifting with the current, and don't have steerage way. I have not seen any reports yet on the state of the tide, or speed of the river current. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 28, 2024 01:44 AM (tkR6S)

The ship was reported to have attained 8 point something knots, under power. Seven point something, at impact.

The river current was.. let's guess. 4 knots? That's a FAST current. Enough to leave "bow waves" around dock pilings.

Ship HAD steerage. Even if marginally. But with zero hydraulics, it had no RUDDER.

And with no power, it could not apply THRUST against the rudder to sharpen the turn.

I have helmed, often single handed, what might be considered an astonishing array of sailboats, all single engined, of a wide, wide variety of keel and rudder hull-plans.

Worst of them all, the Catalina 38 ft. Mk II design. The "walk to port" required about a 120 degree stationary offset before power was applied. When stern steerageway was achieved, you MIGHT just have the hull aligned with the marina fairway.

And you'd best be a deft hand with throttle and wheel and wind and current.

But with only 3 to 4 knots net steerage, any deflection they could apply to the rudder would take longer to bring the vessel's head around. Time that they didn't have. They were basically fucked the first time they lost power.

Every luxury yacht I've ever crewed, BOTH aux generators were UP and ONLINE and (even redundantly) powering all electrical and hydraulic systems, before the vessel ever left the dock.

Even if one of the two Main Engines coughed, the aux gennies kept the load off the other Main.

Once out of the transit channel? Hit the power panel, shift all load to the mains, and give the aux gennies their rest.

Approaching the dock. Port gennies on odd numbered days, Starboard on the evens. Kept the Hobbs Meters for engine hours, happy enough.

Unfortunately, most do not think of that when their pets are young and prone to jumping around. Helping them not jump around too much while young helps later in life or at least I think every little bit helps later on. For in-house exercise, cat ramps and not cat stairs, e.g. Swinging bridges, spiral ramps up cat trees, stuff like that. You can also get a cat's jumping around out of its system with controlled cat 'catch and kill' play.

He was recalling the days when he was a "bo"(where did you think his son's name came from?) as A Number 1, the most enterprising hobo across Depression-era America. 525 Interesting blog of a ships captain with the pilot going up the waterway a few hours before the container ship hit the bridge.
Probably find it on Google. It shows how much experience it takes to tread the needle up that canal to Baltimore. You don't steer a ship like a truck. Lots of knowledge in knowing where to set the ruder and those ships don't react that quickly with a rudder change. And to have all power go out a the last moment, your fucked or lucky. Emergency power just turns on the lighting.
With unlimited dollars from the government, I'd bet the replacement will look like the Sunshine bridge south the St. Pete. All the remaining parts of the bridge will be replaced with wider roadways. Having traveled that bridge many times, the roadway was fairly narrow. Much like the harbor bridge (two bridges actually) east of Baltimore.
Which are probably about the same age.
