Overnight Open Thread (4/1/2024) [J. Edgar Phallenburger IV]

AceCollege.jpg

What an honor! I've known Ace for many years...we went to prep school together and were D&D partners for a few years in college (not the same school, but it was just down the street). I could tell you stories about his characters! What a perv!

But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be offered a chance to host an Overnight Thread! I had to promise that I wouldn't tell the story about why he is called an Ewok, and no stories about school, or afterwards. Not even the one about him crapping his pants in public. Well...his assless chaps to be precise. But he didn't mention any of his girlfriends being off limits, so I dug up a photo of the best looking one.

I embedded his favorite group's best song (according to Ace) behind his sophomore year photo up above....

If a certain ONT Cob had a cat this would be his favorite song.

I lived in a small town in the north of England for several years...mostly as an legal enforcer for one of the trade unions. It was a fun time, and after a long night of breaking legs and windows, we would often adjourn to my favorite fast-food establishment.

SurgiFood.JPG

Excellent food, and the counterman would usually slip us a snort or two of bootleg Scotch to warm ourselves. I think it was just cheap gin that he put in a barrel with some dried out lawn clippings and some ashtray waste, but hell, it tasted good, so why not?

Musical Intermission

I find it highly amusing to observe the banter back and forth between Nurse Ratched and Doof. Neil Young vs. Rush. Silly commenters. Those in the know, realize and grasp the concept of the best Canadian artist of all time:

Ace told me he is neutral towards Misanthropic Humanitarian's musical taste. I quite agree. As far as I recollect, this artist has never been featured on an ONT. I believe it is time.

I remember Ace when he got his first pair of bell bottom pants. He was so cool with platform shoes, loud bell bottoms and lip syncing to his favorite band.

And...I go look up these singer's individual music and you suddenly realize that just because one is a talented singer does not at all mean one is talented at knowing WHAT to sing.

An example with Merethe Soltvedt

With Thomas Bergersen: https://tinyurl.com/w4u8ccy3

188 In more serious news, another of the Greatest Generation has passed on to final muster.

The last known survivor of USS Arizona has passed away. Lou Conter was 102. On 7 Dec 1941 he was aboard ship as a quartermaster. Lou would carry the fight to the Japanese during the war as a PBY 'Black Cat' pilot launching night time attacks with his lumbering seaplane. He even survived being shot down in 1943 and fending off off sharks until him and his crew were rescued. After the war, Conter would become the US Navy's first SERE officer and was instrumental in the training of naval aviators in what to do when shot down and/or captured.

201 Of pickleball I am agnostic. BUT, our community has a vibrant and rabid pickleball group. So much so, they routinely run out of courts and have dozens of folks waiting for court time. We aren't finished with it yet but there remains a pretty good chance that the pb demand will damn near fund all operating costs, and then some, of a new, first class space for us.

When I was a boy, Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery only extended to the stone walls. Now it extends way beyond that, for the WWII generation is marching into the sunset. The San Antonio area had, a few short years ago, a hundred or so people who could claim to be on Oahu on December 7, 1941. It is now down to two, last I checked.

SpaceX has three operational drone ships: Just Read the Instructions (II) (JRTI) and A Shortfall of Gravitas (ASOG), operating in the Atlantic for launches from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY), operating in the Pacific for supporting missions from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

I think they would have gone with Read The Flipping Manual if it hadn't been so close to the MIT server RTFM.

DMB is kinda cut from a similar jam-band cloth. They have more radio-friendly hits than the Dead, but their live stuff resembles the Dead with extended versions of songs featuring long instrumental sections. The DMB fan base calls themselves Dave-heads. So even more crossover with the Dead. Both have large loyal followings.

329 The Bielefeld Conspiracy explained. There is, in the most literal sense, a German city named Bielefeld with all the features I listed above. The idea of Bielefeld being fictional arose from a 1994 conversation on the newsgroup de.talk.bizarre, when a person claimed they were from Bielefeld, and another joked that there wasn't any such place.

It morphed into an internet meme within Germany, and, as is typical with such things, more and more elements were added, including the idea of the Conspiracy itself. Towards the end of her career as Chancellor, Angela Merkel made a deadpan reference to having held a meeting there, adding "if it exists at all," and "I had the impression I was there."

Bielefeld itself has embraced the meme, and even offered a one million Euro prize to anyone who could prove its non-existence. The gag even inspired a mock documentary.

Imagine if something similar was deployed regarding the existence of Canada.

355 I'm not suggesting that Canada itself should be labeled fictional, necessarily. (Although the notion that Canada is the result of a conspiracy between cartographers and the Danish government has its merits.) Just choose a province, or, better yet, a city.

Like, say, Ottawa. I'm sure there are plenty of Canadians who would find the non-existence of Ottawa a humorous and satisfying notion. The potential is there - something along the lines of "C'mon, Ottawa became the capital because Queen Victoria closed her eyes and pointed at a random spot on the map of Canada?!?" You'd have to couple that with the "real" capital of Canada - maybe a small suburb outside Thunder Bay?

Just saw that somebody added up all the LGBTQXY days, weeks, and months. Turns out more than half of the days of the year are some sort of Pervert Day. So, quite visible, I would say.

And to the end Karie Jean-Pierre, WH spokesidiot extraordinaire lectured us on the calendar. She said something like, "Those of us who know how the calendar works know that Easter falls on different Sundays..." and thus this was all a big coincidence.

I'd love to see KJP explain the Gregorian calendar and the Computus of Easter.

455 It is all just a big, absurd joke...
https://t.co/hbqUA0dJPX
Turkey is set to become the United States’ largest supplier of artillery shells as NATO allies have exhausted their stocks and now struggle to ship ammunition to Ukraine. Turkey’s indirect support for Ukraine is also supplemented by direct support, such as producing drones and warships, yet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offers himself as a viable partner in searching for peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Turkish defence company Repkon’s production lines are expected to produce about 30% of all US-made 155mm artillery shells by 2025.
The Pentagon said in a statement about investment in Texas’ defence industry with Turkish counterparts that working with allies “is key to building a global defence industrial base.”
...This is despite the fact that the issue of the acquisition of the Russian-made S-400 is not resolved, which is the reason Turkey was booted from the F-35 fifth-generation fighter jet program...

Well, she's not wrong. Easter does float around between March and April. Usually, Easter and the final round of The Masters are the same day. Passover and Easter politely bump into each other frequently. So, sure, coincidence. Except, these depraved wretches ruling the country have not been shy about how much they hate Christianity. They couldn't wait to do this to stick it in the face of those 'Christian Nationalists'.
