I *almost* like this. I like the scene. I like the overall subject. I like the composition. There's just not enough, somehow. It's too dim. It seems like there's much more there, just waiting to break free.
Maybe it's filthy and if it were skillfully restored, it would be what it should have been. I dunno. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 27, 2024 09:33 AM (6bTRc) 23

I've seen many springs like that still in use in the Balkans. Usually just stuck in the side of a mountain. The locals (and Western European allies) would drink straight from the tap. You get little crunchy bits like sand...was told they're some kind of little mollusk or crustacean that let's you know the water is clean and safe...🫤

I learned how to drive on an automatic and was ambivalent about learning to drive a manual.
Then I met the single stupidest person I've ever encountered. No joke, this guy was basically a bipedal dog. A box of rocks was a Mensa candidate in comparison. He could drive a manual. It is not the most noble motivation, but I was humiliated (internally - nobody else mentioned it) that there was literally anything that dude could do that I couldn't. One consequence of the Dali disaster has been the expansion of my word power.
I didn't know that the correct word for when a moving vessel hits a stationary object is not "collision" but rather "allision," which has a Latin root (allisio) and means "to strike." This painting, class, is interesting, as it shows the traditional face carving used for springs in antiquity. With the face, orifice and moisture, it was only as matter of time before people started enjoying the sexual possibilities these springs could provide, which led to the glory holes we all love and frequent to this day!

Interesting painting. The colors and texture of the paint and brush strokes remind me of works from the 18th century more than the 19th. (Or maybe it just needs a good cleaning.) What makes the image for me is the pose of the woman. It is perfect for capturing the effort it takes to fill and carry a bucket of water along with probably a lot of other chores. The way she leans against the wall is indicative. And I like the way the bit of landscape in the distance on the left side peeks through. Makes me think of the style used in the Mona Lisa and other paintings from that era.

Was in Richmond yesterday for my birthday with Future Leader and his mom. Zoning in Richmond is interesting. You will see a beautiful 1920's Italianesque mansion surrounded by 3-bedroom 1950's clapboard houses. Wandering blacks talking to themselves seem common. Really amazing disparity of construction techniques and materials. Methinks they need to unleash the dozers and improve the city. Back in the day (late 70s/early 80s) Richmond had a choice on its future. To have the growth and renewal they could have expanded Richmond's airport to me meet international standards. They decided to wave off and Charlotte scooped the rewards instead. Its really too bad. Richmond has some remarkable bones.

I *love* the modern US sewer/sewage system. I read a book about Yellow Fever over 10 years ago and it really opened my eyes to how our way of life is really only possible because we can take clean water, and its removal, for granted. All those who live above the 5th floor are going to realize, too late of course, that their sanctuaries only work because of a *lot* of people doing a lot of little, routine jobs that make the Magic keep flowing. They're going to find out that the penthouse suite is a *terrible* place to be with no electricity and no water or waste removal. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at March 27, 2024 10:34 AM (XjtdB) 286

Treaties don't apply if both parties don't ratify them. Posted by: Joe Mannix Not a specialist in intl law but navigated around it. Basically, treaties signed by parties are the alleged bedrock of international law, then there is the penumbra of coverage to non-signatories based on the number of countries ratifying a treaty which creates a customary intl law, and last is the proceedings of various international organizations such as OAS, UN, etc. and their official organs such as the International Court of Justice or International Criminal Court. In real terms, international law, like domestic law, rely on the ability of states to act to enforce the law and the will to do so.
I drove through it a couple of days ago. When I was a yoot, their were old smokestacks painted as cigarettes as a landmark. Those are now gone, and replaced by a massive, sterile-looking plant for Philip-Morris cigarettes. I was offered a chemist job there long ago, but declined. There are lots of refugee yoots from NoVa who tell me that Richmond is the hot new city and the place to be. I'm skeptical, but what do I know? On trucking? On food prices? Traffic? Chemical transport? Etc.? Posted by: Seems Legit at March 27, 2024 10:26 AM (JeYYB) I think biggest effect will be on local traffic. Posted by: BignJames at March 27, 2024 10:30 AM (AwYPR) I'd say it has pretty serious regional impacts. HAZMAT transportation through Maryland via the I-95 / US-1 corridor will need a different route. Either they take I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in the opposite direction to get around the city, or they detour Baltimore completely via US-50 / US-301 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. THe opposite direction on the Baltimore Beltway is already a clusterf*ck of traffic. Add in the local commuters who will spill onto it because of the increased traffic on the 2 harbor tunnels, and it will make that route even more miserable. ___________ Yes, and no. The ports have to be equipped with the proper loading/unloading cranes and other equipment for the type of ships they expect to service. For example; Baltimore is one of the larger ports of entry for Mercedes Benz and BMW vehicles. Both manufacturers have huge receiving centers for those. And the infrastructure to get those cars to various dealers depending on who ordered what. Another port cannot simply fill that void. Humanity owes a debt of gratitude to a man virtually nobody has heard of: Britain's Sir Joseph William Bazalgette - the civil engineer who designed and implemented the monstrously expensive and astoundingly effective London sewer system in the mid 19th century.

However justified Israel was in waging this war, PM Netanyahu cannot flout the 4th Geneva Convention. International law requires humane treatment of civilian non-combatants. Ceasefire now.
I am not one who refuses to consider the possibility of the government of Israel being in error however... The Geneva Convention requires both sides to adhere to the rules, like declaring war, and wearing uniforms. Rules Hamas eschews. Hamas does not have any mechanism to differentiate between combatants and non-combatants. Hamas, the elected government of Gaza. Presumably, any Gazans who approached the IDF - possibly nude to make it harder to hide weapons - slowly and in a non-threatening manner in an effort to surrender and then claim to be civilian, would not be slain out of hand. We are reaching the "absurdity" phase of this Trans movement. Posted by: WisRich at March 27, 2024 10:57 AM (G0vdT) Those that refuse to stand up to tyrrany, suffer the consequences. I no longer care about the environments created when parents of those effected sit idly by, watching their daughters be destroyed, mentally and physically. That section of my field is growing forever barren. Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Joe Biden at March 27, 2024 10:59 AM (Zz0t1) 429
PM Netanyahu cannot flout the 4th Geneva Convention. International law requires humane treatment of civilian non-combatants.
--- #241 and governments et alia using civilians as human shields are committing a war crime and are to be held responsible for resulting civilian deaths and not the attackers, who always have a right to self-defence against enemy attacks launched upon them from civilian sites/areas. Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at March 27, 2024 10:29 AM (2yu8s) *** The left keeps talking about the genocide. Where is it? Where are the hundreds of thousands of bodies that by now are supposedly dead? Where are the stacks of bodies waiting to be burned? The left cannot even use the word properly. The IDF is going through extraordinary measures to avoid killing civilians. Netanyahu would be right to tell the UN to go pack sand. Posted by: Diogenes at March 27, 2024 10:59 AM (W/lyH) 430

388 I do find it funny that all the people pissing about Israel and the Geneva Convention are completely void of the fact that Hamas itself is likely a violation of said convention.
---------- Non-state actors are allowed but they have to follow the Conventions themselves, wear uniforms [even if it's just an armband-brassard], keep separate from civilians, have a chain of command responsible for them, and a few other things. No Boer farmers doing a raid and then returning to their farms; no franc-tireurs acting similarly; no Greek civilians killing German paratroopers just as they hit the drop-zone, unarmed, to avoid retaliation upon civilian populations/towns.
