Then I met the single stupidest person I've ever encountered. No joke, this guy was basically a bipedal dog. A box of rocks was a Mensa candidate in comparison. He could drive a manual.

It is not the most noble motivation, but I was humiliated (internally - nobody else mentioned it) that there was literally anything that dude could do that I couldn't. So I took out my dad's truck and learned how to do it. It actually isn't that hard.

I was a teenager. First car was a 66 Mustang 3-speed. I wanted to drive, I needed to learn. Case closed. No one showed me. I figured it out, quickly. Parents didn't see me much after that.

Have to be careful driving an automatic after years of only driving a stick. I may have floored the brake pedal in my wife’s van a few times thinking it was the clutch…

To this day, I still can't drive a stick. I've done it, out of necessity, a couple of times, but I probably nearly destroyed transmissions doing it.

I have a long learning curve when it comes to mechanical things, and no one, not even my adoring mother, ever had the patience, or the toleration of possible transmission damage, to teach me how to drive a stick.

A friend of mine tried to teach me to drive his stick shift car so that I could drive him home if he drank too much.

Unfortunately, one of the ball joints turned out to be completely rusted out, and broke while he was trying to teach me, and I was behind the wheel.

I think this was a sign from God that it wasn't meant to be.

They're pretty much all registered in third world countries for various legal reasons...not sure about the crew though.

Tying things back to the bridge collapse, however...8 men hit the 47F water at 130AM. They were from Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. They were in their 30s an early 40s. They were on the bridge doing road deck repairs. Six are still missing. All were married. They have kids. They came here for a better life.

And yet all we ever hear about immigrants is slams and insults. Generated by youknowwho...

heart breaking. and the one who refused aid might be here with out a green card. hope he is ok and i feel so badly for them and their families!

I so hope they saved themselves and left the scene as quickly as they could for personal reasons. That would mean there is hope they are still alive, even though it would affirm that they didn’t trust our system.

Very few. There are some municipalities with bad water, and some bad wells. It does happen, but it's pretty unusual. Most of the American water and sewage (sanitation) system - urban or rural - is the envy of the world.

It takes a monumental amount of energy, infrastructure and effort to achieve and maintain it. Nobody does it better for now. The climate fascists and corrupt incompetents are working on that superiority, though, and will bring it down to the mean ASAP.

252 Interesting painting. The colors and texture of the paint and brush strokes remind me of works from the 18th century more than the 19th. (Or maybe it just needs a good cleaning.) What makes the image for me is the pose of the woman. It is perfect for capturing the effort it takes to fill and carry a bucket of water along with probably a lot of other chores. The way she leans against the wall is indicative. And I like the way the bit of landscape in the distance on the left side peeks through. Makes me think of the style used in the Mona Lisa and other paintings from that era.

271 Was in Richmond yesterday for my birthday with Future Leader and his mom. Zoning in Richmond is interesting. You will see a beautiful 1920's Italianesque mansion surrounded by 3-bedroom 1950's clapboard houses. Wandering blacks talking to themselves seem common. Really amazing disparity of construction techniques and materials. Methinks they need to unleash the dozers and improve the city. Back in the day (late 70s/early 80s) Richmond had a choice on its future. To have the growth and renewal they could have expanded Richmond's airport to me meet international standards. They decided to wave off and Charlotte scooped the rewards instead. Its really too bad. Richmond has some remarkable bones.

I *love* the modern US sewer/sewage system. I read a book about Yellow Fever over 10 years ago and it really opened my eyes to how our way of life is really only possible because we can take clean water, and its removal, for granted.

Most of "public health" comes down to four things:
1. Keep the water clean
2. Take the shit away, and keep it out of the water
3. Keep the food clean
4. Take the trash away, and keep it out of the streets

Those four things are almost certainly responsible for more improvement in general health and longevity than the medical system. Those four things are also *very* hard to achieve, and very expensive.

302 Was in Richmond yesterday for my birthday with Future Leader and his mom. Zoning in Richmond is interesting. You will see a beautiful 1920's Italianesque mansion surrounded by 3-bedroom 1950's clapboard houses. Wandering blacks talking to themselves seem common. Really amazing disparity of construction techniques and materials. Methinks they need to unleash the dozers and improve the city. Back in the day (late 70s/early 80s) Richmond had a choice on its future. To have the growth and renewal they could have expanded Richmond's airport to me meet international standards. They decided to wave off and Charlotte scooped the rewards instead. Its really too bad. Richmond has some remarkable bones.

I drove through it a couple of days ago. When I was a yoot, their were old smokestacks painted as cigarettes as a landmark. Those are now gone, and replaced by a massive, sterile-looking plant for Philip-Morris cigarettes. I was offered a chemist job there long ago, but declined.

There are lots of refugee yoots from NoVa who tell me that Richmond is the hot new city and the place to be. I'm skeptical, but what do I know?

My unscientific guess is that uv exposure to the water would disrupt persistent drug and hormone particulates by damaging their molecular bonds. But that is just looking at it from the outside from what I know about UV water treatment of viruses and other nasty organisms.

I'd say it has pretty serious regional impacts. HAZMAT transportation through Maryland via the I-95 / US-1 corridor will need a different route. Either they take I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in the opposite direction to get around the city, or they detour Baltimore completely via US-50 / US-301 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
THe opposite direction on the Baltimore Beltway is already a clusterf*ck of traffic. Add in the local commuters who will spill onto it because of the increased traffic on the 2 harbor tunnels, and it will make that route even more miserable.

Yes, and no.

The ports have to be equipped with the proper loading/unloading cranes and other equipment for the type of ships they expect to service.

For example; Baltimore is one of the larger ports of entry for Mercedes Benz and BMW vehicles. Both manufacturers have huge receiving centers for those. And the infrastructure to get those cars to various dealers depending on who ordered what. Another port cannot simply fill that void.

I believe this will cause some significant disruptions for certain things. That's the reason I would like to know what is on the ships that cannot now dock in Baltimore.

A port closing (especially due to something like this) should cause disruption. But it shouldn't be crippling. This is why you have multiple ports. This is the problem with Big .... anything. It leads to less redundancy and less robustness.
