Good Friday Cafe

Birthing Cave Trail at Sedona, Arizona

by @cayleighanddavid

Dogs enjoying a gigantic hose.

The TV plays "where's the ball" with a dog.

Mother and cub wombat.

You want to see a miracle? This dum-dum didn't break his neck.

Highest-elevation mountaintop roller coaster.

How to fly (under special circumstances).

Icy coasts (with some sea stacks, don't even worry about it mate).

American-Southwest-Style rock formations, but out in the snow and ice of Belogradchishki, Bulgaria.

Ice is more interesting than I thought. Slightly.

Frightening: being stalked by a bear.

In the Italian Alps.

This makes me want to finally read more than the first sixty pages of the Aubrey Maturin books.

Who's up for a moody winter drive?

Some last lovely glimpses of winter weather.

Bitches be shopping. I mean, I'm saying the dog looks female, and she's obviously coming from the market.

Bottle-feeding a baby manitee.

You cannot out-stalk a cat.

Girl boxer is a human buzzsaw.

Husky meets baby fox.

Dog adjusts the fan.

The lions of winter.

Guy shows off a floating walk illusion, which I think is cooler (and eerier) than the moonwalk.

This dog puts the floating walk into practice.

62 33. A Sea of Words - Jamaica

A great companion volume to the Aubrey/Maturin series, which explains most of the nautical jargon used in the novels. Ace might find it interesting, given his keen interest in etymology. There are so many words and phrases which originated with the advent of the great sailing ships ("the devil to pay", "toe the line", etc.)

I read the novels with great pleasure, primarily because of the strong character development. I was baffled by much of the nautical lingo, but to me, it was like a beautiful foreign language, of which I was able to catch a word here and there. Indeed, one amusing sub-theme is Dr. Maturin's lubberly inability to master the language of navigation.

"There! Did you see that, Stephen? The light portside. The left side, Stephen. Lord, what a fellow you are!"

In any event, I didn't let my ignorance of the nautical talk interfere with my enjoyment of the stories.

I've told this before but I raced on a boat owned by one of the executives of Norton, the publishers who brought the Jack Aubrey series to the US. He told me they were strongly warned by all of their industry peers not to do it because Americans wouldn't be interested in because of the dense nautical language in the books. They did it anyway.

Turned out ok.

I liked him. Solid actor. He sort of disappeared. Used to be in just about everything and then, poof, gone. Admittedly I don't keep up with Hollywood, so maybe my perception is off.

121 Interesting little snippet over at Insty regarding the Washington Post smear campaign against Chaya Raichik in regards to the "Nex" Benedict suicide. Seems they knew the girl's father had been convicted of sexually abusing her yet did not mention that and continued to blame Raichik. I guess nothing must get in the way of the trans narrative. Disgusting.
