Retirement Procedings

Lt. Colonel Robert Maclaren retired from the British Army in 2001 after a long fulfilling career. On the day that he retired he received a letter from the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defence setting out details of his pension and, in particular, the tax-free ‘lump sum’ award, (based upon completed years of service), that he would receive in addition to his monthly pension.

The letter read "Dear Lt. Colonel Maclaren, We write to confirm that you retired from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on 1st March 2001 at the rank of Lt Colonel, having been commissioned into the British Army at Edinburgh Castle as a 2nd Lieutenant on 1st February 1366. Accordingly your lump sum payment, based on years served, has been calculated as £68,500. You will receive a cheque for this amount in due course. Yours sincerely Army Paymaster”

Colonel Maclaren replied; “Dear Paymaster, Thank you for your recent letter confirming that I served as an officer in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards between 1st February 1366 and 1st March 2001 – a total period of 635 years and 1 month. I note however that you have calculated my lump sum to be £68, 500, which seems to be considerably less than it should be bearing in mind my length of service since I received my commission from King Edward III. By my calculation, allowing for interest payments and currency fluctuations, my lump sum should actually be £6, 427, 586, 619. 47p. I look forward to receiving a cheque for this amount in due course. Yours sincerely, Robert Maclaren (Lt Col Retd)”

A month passed by and then in early April, a stout manilla envelope from the Ministry of Defence in Edinburgh dropped through Col. Maclaren’s letter box, it read:

On Melting Pots

The Melting Pot Myth Is Destroying America

As for what, precisely, “America” is — other than a set of “unifying beliefs and political ideals” — Thornton didn’t deign to explain. Very few of these apologetics ever do, save for obligatory hand-waving about “ideals” and “beliefs” and “creeds.” That is a feature, rather than a bug, of the concept: When you reduce your country’s identity to a shapeless, inchoate ooze of incoherence — a pot that melts away all that is concrete and distinctive — it becomes impossible for that identity to mean much of anything at all. The melting pot abstracts America out of existence.

In fact, the “melting pot” theory of American identity is far broader and more abstract than any actual melting pot — or, at least, any melting pot whose contents are worth serving. The dishes one prepares in a melting plot have a distinctive flavor — ideally an appetizing one — requiring that the cook carefully choose what to put in to them while simultaneously leaving many things out of them. Not only that, but the mix of what the cook adds must meet a specific, predetermined balance; too little salt leaves a dish bland, and too much makes it inedible.

He misses the point. I wrote about the melting pot concept (checks date. Oh god, ten years ago).

Having tortured the analogies beyond reason, let's leave them for a moment and introduce humans to the mix. There are any number of tendencies that are inherent in human beings, but one of the most basic is that we are tribal by nature. The founding fathers recognized this and realized that the great American experiment could very well fail if its citizens retained their preexisting tribal loyalties in their new country. There had to be something to supplant the old tribal affiliation, and thus the melting pot concept was born. Nobody was denying that individual citizens had been Dutch, or English, or Spanish or French, but now they were American. The previous tribal identities became part of a larger, better identity that superceded the old one. Salt does not lose its saltiness when it becomes part of the soup, but the soup is greater than the salt alone. Everyone loves soup. Who eats straight salt?

He simply hand waves away inconvenient things about the melting pot that make it work. I can easily explain the political ideals that make this country work, so can most of y'all. The founders debated about them endlessly. Here he just declared them undefined and moves on. Second, yes, absolutely it means leaving things out. You can not become an American while simultaneously thinking that you effectively own your wife and daughters. That goes away when you swear to abide by the laws of this land. It's why I deplore terms like Irish-American or African-American. They're backwards. I know we don't expect this anymore, but we should. The article mentions Ilhan Omar, and quotes a speech where she clearly indicates that she considers herself a Somali, not an American. She's violating her oath of citizenship. It should be stripped from her, and she should be deported back to Somalia. It won't happen, of course, but it should. The melting pot would work just fine if we defended the end result (the American “soup” ) from ingredients which poison it.

Starvation, Surveillance, and Back-Alley Abortions: Romanian Dissident Reveals Horrors of Living Under a Communist Regime

“In sixth grade, I remember it was the first time when I had to stay in line for sugar,” she said. It was a hot summer day, and Ionescu said that after three hours of waiting, she fainted. “You could stay in line for four, five hours, six hours, seven hours waiting for the car to arrive with produce for the trucks. But that didn’t mean that everyone was able to get something. You never knew. You never knew if it was meat, sugar, or oil.”

The woman being quoted in the article is a good friend of mine, as is her husband. He's so virulently anti-communist that he makes me look like a red-diaper baby, and I think all communists should be given free helicopter rides. December 25 is a double holiday for them. Christmas, of course, but also execute the dictator day. I'm really not sure which they relish more.

I Need More Details

Father of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley convicted of involuntary manslaughter for son's crimes

On Thursday, a Michigan jury reached a guilty verdict for James Crumbley, the father of school shooter Ethan Crumbley, for four counts of involuntary manslaughter. The charges stemmed from his 15-year-old son committing a mass shooting at a high school.

The Michigan parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were both charged in the case with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, according to a report from Fox News.  Jennifer Crumbley was found guilty of the charges in February.

The Crumbley's legal defense lawyer, Keith Johnson, pointed out the precedent being set in the case by charging parents for their child's crimes, saying, "This is a historic case because the prosecutors are seeking to hold a parent responsible for the actions of a child … the violent actions that led to the death of other children. And so this is a test case to see the limits of parents' responsibility for the actions of their children who are of a high school age."

I need to know what legal justification there is for the verdict. I'm not saying that there isn't one -”Dad, I wanna kill the kids at my school” “Ok son, here take my gun” would do it, I suppose, but this is a very slippery slope.

Old Reliable

Here's Why a Home Landline Phone Is a Good Idea, Even in 2024

On Thursday morning, AT&T users in many of the most populous cities in the US woke up to no network service on their phones. The major outage appears to have lasted more than 12 hours, leaving many people without one of their most critical lines of access to the modern world.

The carrier quickly apologized to customers.

"Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company said in a statement.

AT&T also assured people that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack, and in fact blamed "the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network."

For many customers, the outage was also a reminder of the perils of relying only on mobile phones, and it may have made some people rethink the place of a home device that used to be standard issue but is now nearly obsolete: the landline telephone.

We had a landline when we moved here. Had dial-up internet too, it took Sudden Link like 3 or 4 months to get “high speed”(my ass) internet installed to the house, but we discontinued it after that happened. Maybe we should re-consider.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by conspiracies:

Kid is dismissed without supervision. So kid retrieves weapon from locker, and starts shooting.

Yes, the kid was teetering on the edge, but the school pushed him over it and were, moreso than the parents, negligent in their duties. Why let A kid who you suspect has a weapon and the intention to cause harm to roam free on his own immediately after telling him he is about to be placed under a draconian surveillance protocol?

I'm still going to have to install a Good Old Fashioned manual rain gauge out back. The electronic one gives a reading of Inches in the immediate Past Hour, but no accumulative readings.

Still, it's kinda cool to look over at the display, and be able to quantify the "howlin' out thar!" as actual data.

Well, sometimes. One of the teams I was brought in to 'help out' was tasked with filling containers with 3 lbs of coleslaw. That was it - they had a go/nogo scale to help them. The trouble was, they felt to be great employees, they had to cram as much coleslaw into that container as possible. One of the gentlemen was even standing on top of the mound of slaw to get just a little bit more into the tub. The Co. was losing $$ on every tub they packed.

We ended up changing the job duties. Great folks tho'. They loved their jobs, and everyone at the Co. loved them too.

A landline comes in sort of handy on all those occasions when I'm required to list a phone number but prefer not to, i.e., "field required." The chord that attaches to my landline phone is disconnected. The only time I ever plug it in is when there's a problem with my real phone, i.e., I left it at a friend's house.

So... fair dinkum.

Our household was full of firearms. The ammo was locked up in cabinet and the guns were out in the open on a gun rack with them cable locked to the gun rack.

More importantly, having taught early on about firearms we didn't pay much attention until it was time to head out to murder cans or go camoing. This part was just as important as locking them up.

It isn't. The Government of Canada would prefer that you bend over and take it up the arse for the criminal forces of darkness, or just die quietly thank you very much. It's less paperwork, y'see.

And if you think I'm kidding, read this story about a two and a half year legal fight this guy (a firearms instructor) had with the government because he fired 3 warning shots at four assailants who had lobbed Molotov cocktails at his home and had set his porch and exterior of the house ablaze. He got it under control with a garden hose and then called 911, and that's when his real troubles started.

https://archive.is/BcLHh

They did clear him, but the legal bills must have bankrupted him. The process IS the punishment.

194 Back in the Living Aboard the Sloop New Dawn years, my fone, and consequently my (dial up) internet, was a land line.

Connected via heavy marine shore connection cable, it effected the connection via four heavy-pins/sockets, wth a highly polished "screw down" collar on the socket. Big ol' gasket under the cap. Once that was plugged in and connected next to the actual 30A Shorepower cable, that connection was SOLID.

I ran my own Two Pair line, from the Southwest Bell distribution panel, down under the docks, to terminate at my boat-slip's Dock Box. That was the "demark", where the line became "mine" and not SWB's.

But, that 370 ft. of line I hung under the docks? Two pair, inside a silicone anti-corrsion gel core, then the usual Vinyl sheath. But around that, was a heavy Solid Copper shield, think about 3x the thickness of Heavy Duty aluminm foil. And THEN, the actual exterior (very thick, heavy duty) Vinyl.

Connections made up and coated with a generous application of No-Ox. And that heavy copper sheath? Direct to each end's Ground at the box.

Never had problems with scratchy "dial up" modem probs again, after that.

Trust me, you are not the lone fan of Tom Baker's run as the Doctor. He brought an eccentricity to the role that suited a protagonist who was quite literally alien. No one afterwards was quite able to pull that off - the best of them, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi could really only manage quirkiness, and that doesn't quite cut it.

It didn't hurt either that he had some of the hotter companions - Sara Jane Smith and the two Romanas.

217 Seems to me there are very few circumstances where shooting through a door is justified. Maybe if your porch cam shows actual, real zombies beating on your door. Otherwise, take a defensive position, and let them beat down the door, and then shoot to kill. The broken-door door stands as testimony that you were in fear of your life.

Your door is your property as well, part of why I have shotguns is to minimize the likelihood of overpenetration for the neighbors 50 yards away.

Nice thing about my place is if the family is in hyper-vigilance mode you have three militarily trained shooters with two fatal funnels in and overwatch on the third door organically.

229 As kids, we ran around blasting our cap guns. We all knew the difference from real weapons.

Our "old house" was originally a place for dad's & grampa's generation to drink & play poker after quail hunting. It was expanded for younger generations' recreation. Throughout, there were rifles on the rack in the back. Kids did not mess with them. (Those were days high schoolers had gun racks in the cab of their pick-ups.)

That bullet hole in the back window, taped over and preserved for decades? At a party, one of Dad's guests, intoxicated, pointed a rifle at Dad and asked, "Y' think it's loaded?" Dad told him to put it down. Instead, the fool fired out the window. Stupider than any of the young'n's.

230 Under the RCA brand, you can buy a doorbell camera, just as good as Ring, but that DOES NOT connect to a "mother" network.

The RCA here connects ONLY to the house wi-fi, and I pay good money for an I.T. guy to make damn sure that the wi-fi has NO "open ports" to be exploited by "surfers", and that the RCA has NO open avenues to talk to "mother", even if it wanted to. Which, it doesn't.

Their fone app is a bit kludgier than Ring's. But the image clarity is profoundly good.

Even the RCA's terms of service at satisfactory. With Ring, THEY own every frame of image you've recorded. RCA? YOU own the images. All of 'em.

239 The symbology Karen above really put a lot of thought into her harangue - I mean, bringing visual aids to a customer service desk? Pareidolia also may have played something of a role here. A logo associated with monstrous levels of intensity wouldn't be out of line displaying a series of stylized talon slashes, and sounds a bit more likely than a trendy group of designers saying "Hey, we could work in the Hebrew characters for 666 in this and ... somehow profit from that?

The only possible point the Karen there might have there is in relation to the cross enclosed within the letter O, but it isn't what she thinks it is. That rendering is derived from Germanic runes, and while it might denote paganism, it could just be a call-back to the various Metal genres.

The upside down cross thing is an irritation in particular - anyone who's looked at the earliest history of Christianity recognizes that upside down cross is in reference to the martyrdom of Peter, along with a number of other usages that are solidly on the side of the angels. TL/DR: Karens shouldn't trifle with theology.

One episode I re-watched recently was "the stones of blood" , which involves some occult rituals and sacrifices before we get to the aliens behind it. Posted by: polynikes

Some Satanists have indeed adopted the inverted cross as a means of further blaspheming the perversion of standard Christian worship. There's two problems. though - out-and-out Satanists are negligible in the U.S. in terms of sheer number, and most of them are LARPing in the hopes of offending normal people's sensibilities. The few that could genuinely be called Satanists in the disturbing sense of the word are, as I once heard it expressed "either rich perverts or poverty-stricken losers."

Those last two you do need to worry about, but there's a whole host of spiritual dangers out there that deserve more of our attention. Plus, the runic symbol (it could also be Celtic, drawn from its Germanic counterpart) is designed such that inverting it doesn't really change the image of the cross. So, much ado about (likely) nothing.

He was the ball boy and assistant manager for his high school team. Did that for three years. In the last game.of the season the coach had him suit up and start. The other team knew what was up so the were.pretty light on the defense and he goes down and bangs in a three-pointer. WTF!!?? So they up the D and he does it again. He finished the game with 9points.
Pretty cool.

301 Well, for a change of pace today, I cleaned up an old Studebaker overdrive lockout cable, and got it working smoothly once more, and installed it under the dash of my Lark. Then I added a bracket and tab to the throttle bellcrank on the firewall for the kickdown switch, and mounted that. And if I depress the gas pedal right to the floor, the tab depresses the plunger in the kickdown switch, and closes the "normally open" set of contacts, as proven by a test light.
so now I can go ahead and install the overdrive transmission I have waiting to use.

318 Polynikes, Eyes Wide Shot isn't a documentary. Perhaps I failed (most likely I did - being 29 has its drawbacks), but what I was trying to assert that there are many people who LARP as Satanists and those who are actually trying to follow what they believe are the dictates of their vile faith have, in some cases, made use of an inverted cross in the blasphemous mockery of Christian worship, along with a number of other things and rituals sacral in nature. (Take a look at the Black Mass as a stomach-churning example of what some of these degenerates do.)

But the inverted cross is not something I would routinely take offense to, given its prominent display in christian ritual, liturgy, and celebration. Even the Pope sits on a chair with an inverted cross on it. Like the pentangle or its later cousin, the pentagram, were part of the sacred iconography of the Early Church.

Some people appropriated those items and attempted to re-purpose it for their horrific rites. But every effort to date to gauge which Satanists are the real deal (Anton Lavey, for example, was not sincere in his beliefs by his own admission) always comes up with incredibly small numbers.

Sodium-sulfur batteries have been around for close to 60 years, but have proven to be problematic. Start having problems after a thousand charge/discharge cycles. I see no reason why lithium/sulfur would do any better. And they must be run at an elevated temperature, because both the sodium and sulfur must be in the liquid state.

They do have strong steel cases. Both sodium and sulfur are solid at room temperature. And both are highly reactive with oxygen. Breach the case, and a fire is nearly certain. There are a few places that use sodium-sulfur batteries for bulk storage of power for utilities. Really not suited for vehicle use. Ford did try, in the 1960's.

329 There are a few other areas where you either didn't grasp or willfully refused to understand from my original post, but that's by the by at this point. Maybe if I make a declaration of my beliefs, I can get the point across.

I'm a Christian.
I have never or would ever support or defend Satanists.
An invered cross arose from, and continues as a Christan symbol.
Genuine Satanists whether one looks at academic studies or government investigations consistently fail to find practicing Satanists in any major degree.

And the list could continue. There are very real and serious problems aimed at Christianity that deserve our full attention - what some Karen believes she sees in the design and packaging of an energy drink probably isn't one.
