The Saturday Night Joke

A photographer from a well-known national magazine was
assigned to cover Southern California's wildfires. The
magazine wanted pictures of the heroic work the fire fighters
were doing as they battled the blazes.

When the photographer arrived on the scene he realized that
the smoke was so thick that it would seriously impede, or
even make impossible, his obtaining good photographs from
ground-level

He requested permission from his boss to rent a plane and
take photos from the air. His request was approved and via
a cell phone call to the local county airport necessary
arrangements were made. He was told a single-engine plane
would be waiting for him at the airport.

He arrived at the airfield and spotted a plane warming up
outside a hangar. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the
door shut and shouted, "Let's go!"

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and
roared down the runway. Within just a minute or two of
his arrival they were in the air.

The photographer requested the pilot to, "Fly over the valley
and make two or three low passes so I can take some pictures
of the fires on the hillsides."

"Why?" asked the pilot.

"Because I'm a photographer for a national magazine," he
responded, "and I need to get some close-up shots."

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment; finally he stammered,
"So, you're telling me you're not the flight instructor?" (H/T Ciampino)

Waffle House shoots for customer upgrades. Why? I have no idea.

WAFFLE House lovers are set to see an expensive change, making it harder for customers to find parking.

The Waffle House in Lakeland, Tennessee, which is located about 23 miles from Memphis, will now be home to four new electric vehicle charging stations.

Do you want to see wildlife other than the customers at the aforementioned restaurant or George Webb's at 3AM? Once again, The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

The 10 Best Places in the U.S. to See Wildlife
You don’t need to leave the country to have a wildlife experience of a lifetime.

With nearly 3,000 different types of native animal species in the United States and 18,000 types of plants, it’s one of the world’s most ecologically rich countries—in fact, it’s recognized by the World Conservation Monitoring Center as one of 17 mega-diverse nations. From Maine’s rocky shores to the green rain forests of Washington, there’s much to see and do right here at home—no long-haul plane ticket or safari lodge reservation required.

There’s perhaps no better way to see America’s scenic landscapes than by visiting a national park. Created in 1916 by Woodrow Wilson with the signing of the “Organic Act,” the National Park Service, or NPS, has been hailed as one of the most democratic things the U.S. government has created and has been imitated all around the world. The NPS currently oversees 423 parks and monuments on a grand total of 85 million acres of land—all preserved “for the enjoyment of future generations.”

This manager must have been in the bottom 5% of Management Class. However, Kyseem Ransome, has won a Genius Award.

Chipotle manager exposed himself and masturbated in the dining room of a Pennsylvania restaurant, according to police who say that a female victim “felt three squirts of liquid hit her jeans” when she got up to leave the table where the man had allegedly been pleasuring himself.

Following the March 1 incident at the eatery in Camp Hill, a Harrisburg suburb, two women went to the local police station to “report a sexual assault,” according to a March 18 criminal complaint.

The women--one of whom was a former Chipotle employee--detailed an encounter with Kyseem Ransome, the 26-year-old manager. The duo told cops they were seated at a communal table (seen below) talking with Ransome and other employees when Ransome began “doing something with his hands down his crotch.”

I was able to see Mercury damn good tonight (tomorrow will be even better, max elongation tomorrow). I stepped on the front porch a little after 8PM EDT, and couldn't believe it, but I saw Mercury peeking out nicely just above a tree branch.

I got up to a higher vantage point, and around 8:30 PM, it was nicely visible and bright. Jupiter up above along the ecliptic. Even got a couple decent shots (for me) of the point of light with the stupid phone.

Anyway, this a nice window for seeing Mercury right after sunset to almost due west above the horizon.

Here, at (34.7N, 82.2Wish), didn't need any binoculars at all to see Mercury. It was nice and bright, magnitude -0.3. That much brighter than Mars now, which has just started to pop back up on the morning side.

When I first saw it, down here at the house (sort of low, close to the treeline to the west), it was a little after 8PM EDT, and IIRC, Stellarium said it was just a smidge under 12 degrees above the horizon.

Pretty much all of my outdoor activity/camping was on private land, like boy scout camps and the like. Speaking of the Moon, the Full Moon Sunday morning will be the Paschal Full Moon, or the Pink Moon according to the Injuns, the first full Moon of astronomical Spring, and the first full moon of the tropical year.

This determines Easter. Well, mostly. The Ecclesiastical equinox is always Mar. 21, and the "full Moon" they use is actual a date on a lunar calendar. With the Gregorian reform, they also fixed the lunar calendar to get it well in sync with the actual astronomical event of the Paschal Moon.

You will note the Passover occurs much later, April 22nd. This is due to the Jewish calendar having a leap month this year. So, not this moon, but the next one.

This is related to their being a true Blue Moon this year, an astronomical season with 4 full Moons.

They say there at the last, he didn't even know who Columbo was.

247 This determines Easter.

I was friends with a Coptic girl at university, and she mentioned how their Easter would follow along with the Jewish calendar/Passover instead of the Roman Catholic/Protestant Easter.

Yes, she was hot, and no, she was very traditional and not "interested" in me anyway.

Let me back up a bit. I'm not talking about burrito tortillas. They can be pretty big in diameter, my favorite for burritos, but they are pretty thin. What I'm talking about is a five or so inch diameter corn tortilla, thicker than the burrito tortilla. Almost chewy, with a savory corn flavor. You can bake/fry them to make them crispy in the familiar shapes but I prefer them 'street food' soft so I can sort of pinch/roll them to eat them. Look Ma, no utensils!

The Orthodox Easter is different as well. They use the Julian Calendar Mar 21, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian now (will be 14 in 2100).

Also, they didn't fix their lunar calendar. This latter is why even when the Paschal Moon occurs after Julian Mar. 21, their Easter is usually a week behind.

This time however, it will be May 5th in the Gregorian. This Moon is too early for them.

Haven't yet been able to confirm the Orthodox "moon tables" are the same as the current Jewish lunisolar calendar they use for their Passover date.

But that Orthodox table is now 5 days behind the astronomical full moons. While it's well know how the Gregorian reform fixed the solar calendar, they also fixed the lunar tables as well (for a while, they will begin to diverge, but not for several centuries, if not until the year 3000 - 4000) range.

But next year, both the Western and Orthodox Easter will fall on the same date, April 20th.

This makes sense. Probably why they don't do it. Adds cost to the cars, which makes it less likely for them to be on board as their costs are already astronomical for the change over. Better to fob it all off on the city/government because their funds are bottomless.

Although I tend to MEGLO at lunar calendars (too many cycles to juggle in my head at one time), the Gregorian correction of the lunar calendar is based on a correction to the 19 yr Metonic cycle.

They add 1 to an "epact table" every 300 years mostly, with a longer cycle that delays that for 400 years. They added 1 in 1800, and will add another in 2100.

At the time of the adoption, they jumped 10 days on the solar calendar, and jumped 7 on this lunar epact table.

More dead weight for the battery to shuttle around = lower efficiency than the already dismally low it is. And every car would need a 15-pound charging cable, and a spool on which to roll it up. We don't put gasoline filler hoses on cars, either.

But those appliances run off the cord in real time. They aren't charging a battery, to be drawn upon later. The model for vehicles, land, sea, or air, is for the fueling link to be part of the fuel source. Even air-to-air refueling of fighter planes, the fuel line is streamed out by the tanker, and the fighter just plugs into it.

347 The ideal way to charge electric cars? Drive nose-first into a little alcove along a wall. Sensors in the charge locate the charging port in the front bumper of the car, and when a green light shows, you stop, and a robot arm pushed the charging plug into the socket, establishes an electrically-sound connection, and turns on the juice. No cable to steal. And when the charger is not in use, the charge plug is retracted behind a locked panel. This would be very elementary robotics.

Back in the 1980's when Toyota Coronas were being stolen at a huge rate, a friend of mine rigged his family's Toyotas with a real simple cutoff switch to interrupt the starter circuit. It was just a regular normally-open push-button switch mounted directly behind the dash ashtray. With the ashtray pushed right in, the switch was depressed, and the starter worked. With the ashtray pulled out, even a little bit, the starter was disconnected. HIs passengers never even noticed the little ritual of pulling out the ashtray when he parked, and pushing it back in when setting out again.

Is it strange that Princess Kate got diagnosed with something so bad that she had to go to the hospital for two weeks and have some significant procedure (ileostomy?) but at least learned that she didn't have cancer -- only to be informed TWO WEEKS LATER that she has cancer?

Am I missing something here, because it seems to me that doctors should have identified cancer before she even went into the hospital, or at least during her stay.

Like, wtf? Am I wrong? Is this the NHS in action? I'm sure she has better doctors than your average limey, but it still sounds like second-class medicine to me.

First *independent* analysis of Pfizer's clinical trial data done by someone truly "disinterested".

"Evidence found of an over 3.7-fold increase in number of deaths due to cardiovascular events in vaccinated subjects compared to placebo subjects. This significant adverse event signal was not reported by Pfizer/BioNTech. (In other words, Pfizer knew about this safety signal by 3/13/21 and hid it.)"

The authors note it will take a subpoena to fully get at the truth.

407 The thing about the Princess of Wales hasn't yet run the full gamut of coverage and speculation, but I think the way matters were handled come down to a few key concepts:

First, Princess Dianna. I seriously doubt that William has never and will forget or forgive the way the media treated his mother, and their possible role in her tragic death. This, coupled with the usual Buckingham reticence about private subjects would manifest in disclosing as little as possible to the vultures from the various media outlets.

Second, Princess Kate might feel that her public image needed to be managed, especially when you factor in chemo and its effects.

Third, it's entirely William and Kate's business what happened, when, why, how, and in what order.

413 The big unknown in l'affaire Kate is whether William's own pecadillos may have had unforeseen consequences. The UK media are adamant that he has *at least* one mistress, and the ramifications from that could be playing a role here.

I know, what man in his right mind would want to ditch a smokeshow like Kate, but remember William's dad - he was married to a woman that would have made the Archbishop of Canterbury kick his way out of a cathedral door, yet he chose to abandon her in favor of a racehorse that didn't even place at Ascot. Look at all the many pics of William & Kate. Clearly, they adore each other. Realize that William not only knows what the 'paparazzi' did to his mom, but also how his dad's infidelity also affected her.

Yes, Diana was no saint but knowing that her husband was *never* faithful to her, must've caused real damage besides precipitating her own infidelities.

And the small town thing - while I grew up in an area so rural that they had to pipe sunlight in, the nearest small town (and the more distant small one that was the county seat) there was a non-stop gossip mill. The worst thing about it was that you would get assigned to certain categories based on your surname - "Oh, you're one of those (insert generic last name here). I know I can't trust you, because your great-great-grand-unckle's second wife's stepson did something that pissed off my great-grandfather's best friend's son back in 1928."

Doing okay. Everything seems ready for the funeral now, just make sure the suits fit me and younger boy. I was going through some frustration the last two days with one of my BILs and his wife; after I dropped off a jacket, pants, shirt, and tie, I get a call that evening: "He should have shoes too!" Well, you shoulda told me SOONER, as in sometime in the PREVIOUS 12 DAYS, not AFTER I dropped off his clothes. So frustrationg. Made another trip today IN THE RAIN, pouring at times, to drop off...socks and shoes. Get a call while there: "When his wife passed, we had a blanket for her".
Me: "He has a suit with a jacket and pants; WHY would he need a blanket too? No, too late to be doing stuff like that; his funeral is in LESS than two days"...

He, up until the last, insisted he could drive. His driver's license expired in 2018. We didn't tell him. Some time around 2020 - 2021 (Maybe Miley will remember the exact date), he discovered this. He was certain of course, that he wouldn't let his driver's license expire, so began searching for his "good license", which he'd obviously misplaced.

She couldn't work her right hand much for fine motor control. Two weeks later, she could sign her name. Her handwriting changed (that's new, re-routed brain circuits taking over), but she can do it.

They were all just floored.

Not necessarily.

She had (probably) no reason to suspect cancer upon admission. An otherwise routine procedure...

One of my mother's young girlfiends, name of Polly, an she's quite a card, told me don't worry about yo' Mama, son, she's a tough ol' hen like me.

She's young. Only 82 or so. And she is indeed, one tough old hen.

One of the things I learned, after I was much older, was the ol' Polly, when she was a young teeny-bopper, had a crush on my Daddy, before he got married. He was way too old for her, but she was smitten with him for a while.

She would tell me how much I remined her of my Daddy in his heyday.

Oh, Polly's husband, now deceased, had a stroke himself, a big one. She was recounting that. It took him about 2 years, but he finally got where he could talk fairly well.

In the early months, she said she got to where she could understand his aphasic gibberish. He would use the wrong word or sounds trying to say something, but it was consistent. It was like a crazy substitution cipher which she decoded.

My Grandma's generation of women lived to near or past 100. My grandmother died at 89, because she fell on the steps in the old farmhouse, broken hip, etc.

Her sisters lived to 99-103.
