Another Harvard Racial Justice "Scholar" Is Accused of Plagiarism

I can't believe all of this white privilege!

Harvard professor Christina Cross is a rising star in the field of critical race studies. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, secured the support of the National Science Foundation, and garnered attention from the New York Times, where she published an influential article title "The Myth of the Two-Parent Home."

...

According to a new complaint filed with Harvard's office of research integrity, however, Cross's work is compromised by multiple instances of plagiarism, including "verbatim plagiarism, mosaic plagiarism, uncited paraphrasing, and uncited quotations from other sources."

In fairness, I call that "Tuesday."

I have obtained a copy of the complaint, which documents a pattern of misappropriation in Cross's dissertation and one other academic paper. The complaint begins with a dozen allegations of plagiarism related to the dissertation that range in severity from small bits of "duplicative language," which may not constitute an offense, to multiple passages heavily plagiarized from other sources without proper attribution. (Cross did not respond to a request for comment.)

The most serious allegation is that Cross lifted an entire paragraph nearly verbatim from a paper by Stacey Bosick and Paula Fomby titled "Family Instability in Childhood and Criminal Offending During the Transition Into Adulthood" without citing the source or placing verbatim language in quotations.

...

This was not a one-off error. Later in the paper, Cross lifts another full paragraph from Bosick and Fomby, with minor word substitutions, without placing the copied language in quotation marks or properly citing the authors...

Chris Rufo warns the DEI Racketeers: More is coming.

Further investigation is needed. Independent researchers currently looking into plagiarism at Harvard should scrutinize not only these programs but also a control group in other, more substantive disciplines to determine whether plagiarism correlates with left-wing racial disciplines or is widespread throughout the university.

A little OT, but when he was a young man, the songwriter Jimmy Webb had a Grammy Awards like Christopher Cross's year where he dominated them all. He had words of caution for Mr. Cross that turned out to be prophetic.

170 There are automated systems to make better catalysts using simplex optimization. However, you need a chemist to load the test apparatus with useful materials, analyze the data, and use the findings in that reaction. Scaling up is always a big issue, needing process chemists and chemical engineers to make it economical.

Lower energy costs come from better catalysts.

178 Oil industry

Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 22, 2024 07:23 PM (di6C2)

My grandparents met at the University of Michigan, both studying chemistry. After they got married, they moved out to Camden, NJ while my grandpa worked for Standard Oil in Philadelphia. My grandmother had five kids, did what she could to keep up her certifications, and kept the home running while he was a chem prof at Ole Miss. They moved up to Iowa after the race riots (I've always wanted to tell James Meredith that my grandparents spoke well of him after they had him over for dinner), and he kept teaching chemistry at the college while she taught it at the high school.

So yeah, that's what you do with a chem degree that you got in the 1940s.

Virtually all the scholars whose work Cross supposedly stole or plagiarized said they don't consider it theft or plagiarism and they weren't bothered by what they saw. That might change things a bit.

Actually it wasn't. It belonged to the pilgrim settlers. The Indians were nowhere to be found. The pilgrims then allied with a neighboring indian tribe in their wars against other tribes.

182 159 When it comes down to it, most undergraduate science majors are shit.
____________

True. In the sciences, by and large, a Ph.D. is a learner's permit. Just like a brand-new MD. In each case, the guy's education is just getting serious.

Having said that, industry has a number of MS chemists, who are kind of like the non-coms in a lab. Oftentimes infinitely knowledgeable by virtue of decades of experience.

Yes, any exceptional B.Sc. is encouraged to go for a grad. degree.
In STEM I always heard it that a Master's was to learn to do research and a Ph.D. was applying that know-how. So a Master's thesis did not require the subject matter to be novel and could be used to confirm or trash previous research. A Doctorate required to involve original work.
As to citations: very encouraged to cite previous work so as to show that one had read the literature. Just a reference number sufficed, with a bibliography at the end. No literal quoting normally as the readers were expected to go look it up themselves.
