The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Felt like when you have a flat tire in a car," Boeing 777 passenger, Janet Bumbarger.

Quote II

“These recommendations come from a diverse body of lawyers in private and public practice, academics, and researchers who contributed immense insight, counterpoints and research to get us where we are today,” Washington Supreme Court Justice Raquel Montoya-Lewis
Affirmative action, what a great deal!

Quote III

“Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor stand as two of the most respected women role models, and their commitment to democratic values, especially women’s rights, is unequaled. That’s why I join the Ginsburg family in condemning the choice of honorees this year. I had the privilege of meeting Justice Ginsburg on several occasions, and I strongly doubt she would approve of these awardees,” Barbara Streisand, washed up Bitch.

I'm not nor have I ever been a realtor. However I know one of the key slogans is, "Location! Location! Location, is everything!" I'm thinking the location of this new city is not the best.

Ambitious plans to build a utopian sustainable city at the foot of an active Japanese volcano are well on their way to completion.

First announced in 2021, Toyota has been hard at work constructing their Woven City just miles away from Mount Fuji on the island of Honshū, with the first of 2,000 anticipated residents now expected to move in before the end of the year.

Do you like to eat amphibians? Well I do enjoy frog legs. Not sure if I want to eat python. Even if the claim is "they taste like chicken." On the other hand better than eating crickets and roaches which our betters want us serfs to consume.

Python farming as a flexible and efficient form of agricultural food security

Abstract
Diminishing natural resources and increasing climatic volatility are impacting agri-food systems, prompting the need for sustainable and resilient alternatives. Python farming is well established in Asia but has received little attention from mainstream agricultural scientists. We measured growth rates in two species of large pythons (Malayopython reticulatus and Python bivittatus) in farms in Thailand and Vietnam and conducted feeding experiments to examine production efficiencies. Pythons grew rapidly over a 12-month period, and females grew faster than males. Food intake and growth rates early in life were strong predictors of total lifetime growth, with daily mass increments ranging from 0.24 to 19.7 g/day for M. reticulatus and 0.24 to 42.6 g/day for P. bivittatus, depending on food intake.

Once again, an unelected bureaucracy will shove their political will down our throats without any science to support this assault.

The EPA Is About to Outlaw Your Car

"Outlaw your car" sounds like such an outrageous phrase, and technically speaking, it isn't true — but only barely. What practical difference is there between outlawing something, and regulating it out of existence?

That's exactly what the EPA intends to do this week with strict new rules going forward against gas- and diesel-powered cars and light trucks.

Expected as soon as Wednesday, the Biden EPA "is poised to finalize emissions rules that will effectively require a certain percentage — as much as two-thirds by 2032 — of new cars to be all-electric," according to Inside EVs. Politico sells the expected rule as one that would "tackle the nation’s biggest source of planet-warming pollution and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles."

Yes, But Where Are My Novelty Breasts?

Time for something grotesque, I think. Grotesque, but very of our times:

Brooke Lyn Sonia, formerly known as Brett David Sonia, was convicted in 2005 and 2006 on dozens of charges related to the sexual exploitation of a child.
I’ll spare you the grim details, but what Mr Sonia did to the victim, a thirteen-year-old girl, over several months, was sufficiently vile to repel over a dozen jurors, who said they would be unable to sit on a case so disturbing. Suffice it to say, Mr Sonia was found guilty and incarcerated for a minimum of 22 years. During which time,

Sonia was moved between multiple male facilities in Washington, and left a trail of complaints with regards to not being given adequate access to “gender affirming care,” such as women’s underwear and laser hair removal.

“The wait is over! Popeyes finally has wings.” And Genius Award Winners.

MARCH 18--A couple was arrested Saturday afternoon for having sex on the sidewalk in front of a Popeyes, in plain view of passing motorists, Florida police charge.

Responding to a report of lewd behavior, a sheriff’s deputy located two suspects trysting on a patch of grass across from the Vero Beach restaurant (which is directly adjacent to U.S. Highway 1).

According to arrest reports, the cop spotted Arnold Mackey, 70, “making a thrusting motion while on top of” April White, 44. When confronted by Deputy Eric Brashears around 2 PM, the duo began “adjusting their shorts.”

Mackey, the cop noted, “appeared flustered” and was unable to “fully pull his shorts up which left his penis fully exposed to oncoming traffic.”

18 One thing I'll grant Adam Carolla is, he called the LeMon thing on Day 1... When he and Carlson both got fired and picked up by X at the same time, Carolla said (paraphrased): "I can tell you exactly how this will go. In a year, Carlson will be killing it on X, and LeMon will be gone and forgotten. Because whether or not you like Tucker, he has something original to say. And LeMon has nothing. He's a fucking idiot, and CNN just tells him what to say, and in the new media, that won't work. He'll be gone before you know it."

That was 100% accurate.

75 Mis Hum

I graciously accept the virtual dollar we bet on whether or not Trump-endorsed Moreno wold win the OH GOP Senate primary today. Last I looked, Moreno was leading by 16+% (!), with 70% of the vote counted.

Moreno far exceeded my expectations. I thought he MIGHT win by 7-10%, best case scenario. Moreno winning by 4 points seemed the most likely outcome to me.

As for the GE, when Moreno will face incumbent DEM Senator Sherrod Brown...

1) Moreno was the DEMs' opponent of choice. They backed Moreno just like they backed Akin in MO. They're especially eager to exploit Moreno's expressed support for a ban on abortion after 6 weeks (IIRC).

2) Brown will outspend Moreno yuugely, including independent expenditures on each candidate's behalf. Therefore, Moreno gets DEFINED, starting tomorrow, with a DEM shock and awe ad blitz.

3) The GOP primary was BITTER. Unusually so. I wonder if Moreno can win the Dolan supporters in the GE. Could be tough to do.

I believe Brown will start as the clear favorite.

They should do a comparison of true efficiency, that is how efficient each engine is in moving a like sized vehicle around. Note that the gas engine becomes more efficient when its weight drops as the fuel is consumed; the same can't be said for Ecars. And the energy that goes into the mining of rare-earth metals for those Ecars and the efficieny of the energy transmission and use in the Ecars would have to be taken into account.

Whenever I read or hear someone use 'leveraged' when 'used' or 'utilized' would have sufficed perfectly, I give negative marks. Leverage means applying a force even if in a nebulous way. It implies an effort.
So they still need protein to feed the pythons. They feed them rats. I'm a bit squeamish eating processed rat. So input=protein=output whereas with cows and sheep it's input=grass .... output=protein

Speaking as someone who spent his first eighteen years on a farm, not only is this true, but chickens will (and do) eat other chickens. On the big battery farm operations, it's even factored in as part of their daily feeding. Agriculture is not pretty.

158 We had a cool experience at Yellowstone, but not so much for the people two cars ahead of us.

We barely saw any wildlife the whole time we were there, which was sort of a bummer. Then, when we were leaving, traffic got stopped by a huge herd of buffalo. I got a great photo of a young one not ten feet from our car. But up ahead, one of these giants just stopped halfway across the road. He looks at this little Nissan, jumps up on the hood, and then the roof, and down the back. Totaled.

159 The guest comment about the bears is probably true. A friend of mine took the summer off to drive a tour bus around Alaska, on a lark. Picks up a load of passengers in Seward, fresh off the cruise ship, at the docks. Old fat dude asks him, "What elevation would you say were are at?"

Um, ocean. As in, um, sea level.

They aren't always the sharpest knives in the drawer.

T = 0. We have equinox, vernal equinox that is. Astronomical Spring now begins (well, for normal Northern people, for Pixy, he's upside down and bassackwards).

Also, the new apparent Tropical Year begins. Sol is now centered on the celestial equator, on the ascending (northward) node of the ecliptic. This point, the vernal point is the origin of the equatorial celestial coordinate system, the (0,0) point. Right ascension 0h, declination 0 degrees.

The length of the 2023 - 2024 tropical year was 365 days, 5 hours, 42 min, and 8 seconds (mean solar/UT1 time, not ephemeris time).

At this point, the rate of change of solar declination is at maximum, meaning the rate of change in the length of daylight is at maximum. Days are getting longer here at the rate of 2 minutes, 12 seconds per day.

233 >>The EPA Is About to Outlaw Your Car

Yes. I didn't know what Trump was talking about in his 'bloodbath' remarks, about plans afoot to import yuuuge numbers of Chinese cars. Today I learned. The ChiComs are about ready to begin shipping inexpensive EVs to auto dealers near you. Priced at $14,000 or so. Current tariff on those is 27.5 percent. I don't know if the tariff is included in the $14,000; if not ChiCom EVs will still be cheaper than almost all US-made (ha!) EVs. The ChiComs will gladly take a big loss on every EV for a while if they can eventually kill-off US auto production. And our fossil fuel power generation capability.

The Quislings from Biden's Controllers down to mail room clerks at EPA will gladly screw the plebs by forcing them to buy (hated) EVs, if it helps their bank accounts and lets them take credit for stopping glogal enwarmening. I expect the ChiComs are cutting deals in DC right now to sell solar panels, windmills, transformers, and zillions of feet of copper wire to the US to try to keep grid capacity ahead of EV charging demand. (Impossible, but Our Betters neither know nor care about that.)

We are so screwed by our rotten Betters and the UniParty.

If this is something you just recently noticed, get an eye exam. Might be something going on.

That said, the Internets say that slight differences in color perception between eyes is normal. But if this is something you just noticed, a change, you might want to look into it.

Some, like UC Davis and Riverside more or less do not accept whites and strongly discourage application. The graduation rate of medical schools has not changed, it is just that the population and demand for services has outstripped the supply. DO schools are becoming increasingly popular.

That's okay... When it was blazing in, it showed all the dog slobber on the front door glass... and the fur on the floor.

319 107 The EPA Is About to Outlaw Your Car

They should do a comparison of true efficiency, that is how efficient each engine is in moving a like sized vehicle around. Note that the gas engine becomes more efficient when its weight drops as the fuel is consumed; the same can't be said for Ecars. And the energy that goes into the mining of rare-earth metals for those Ecars and the efficieny of the energy transmission and use in the Ecars would have to be taken into account.

All this EPA crapola is these days is legalization of payoffs to pols to get exceptions and helping fascist corporations get bigger by driving up costs for smaller businesses. The EV thing is to con the non rich out of cars. Peasants clog the roads for
the elites and shouldn't be mobile anyway. Efficiency and pollution and even being able to replace ICE with EV have nothing to do with it.

Oh, Lord, I've had experience with that.

Restraints are legally a big no-no. They can do it, but it's a big legal hassle. At a nursing home for rehab after my father broke his hip, they ended up moving his bed next to the wall, then putting a mattress or two on the floor next to it. When the bed alarm went off, it took them a while to get there, and the mattresses on the floor took care of any fall hazard before they got there.

I'm very impressed with this place my mother is at now. They do "acute rehab" for stroke victims and other things. It's quite intensive.

The staff there are very good. They are the very compassionate, eternal patience types. The first afternoon when the transferred my mother there, I noticed that. It was funny. One of the nurses was this little Asian girl (maybe Korean, maybe Chinese, not sure).

She spoke in this exaggerated accent, almost literally "You been here for four hour! You go home now!". I soon realized that was more of an act.

While the were undressing and dressing my mother, I went out in the hall. They had a problem patient, an older woman wouldn't take her pills....

374 Appropos of nothing (I think) reading over some of the historical docs on the Apollo program, one of the newer (sort of) technologies they utilized for electricity generation were fuel cells. Batteries were used, lots of them, big heavy beautiful Silver-Zinc batteries.

But fuel cells are interesting. Hydrogen, Oxygen are the fuels. Generates electricity, and pure water. What’s not to like?

If only for the RV industry, or perhaps cabins and such. Wasn’t this tech considered very promising for civilian applications? What happened.

Seems to me any welding supply shop has hydrogen and oxygen don’t they? Does hydrogen need to be kept at cryo temperatures, is that kind of the show stopper?

Anyway, the little Asian nurse was babysitting that woman, making sure she took her pill. "You take yo pill now! It good for you!'.

The woman would get sneaky. She had a bag next to her in the wheel chair. She'd fake the pill going in her mouth, then try to slip in the bag.

"No, no, pill go in you mouth, not yo bag!" She finally took the bag away. For 10 minutes, she went through that "you take yo pill now!" routine. The old woman finally took her pill, swallowing it down.

The little Asian then went "Yayyyyyy!", clapping her hands, "Good job! You took yo pill".

She looked at me then, with a little proud grin on her face that said, "Ain't I good?" I nodded, yes ma'am, you're good.

During the pill cajoling, the old woman tried to get up out of her wheel chair, setting off the alarm: "Please don't get up....."

The girl's response to that was, "You better sit back down. You make that mean lady behind you mad! That mean lady get mad at me if you get out of yo chair!"

The "mean lady behind you" was just the recorded voice from the alarm of course.

You can buy cylinders of hydrogen from several of the big suppliers, like Matheson. Looked up a price: 40 cubic foot cylinder 245 dollars, including the cylinder. Hydrogen is odorless, can leak out of seemingly tight pipes and fittings, and cannot be odorized. So, not exactly friendly for non-technical users.

Oxygen, on the other hand is pretty easy to take out of the air. When my wife was in hospice they had an oxygen concentrator. Had to look up how it works, and it was pretty interesting. We've got one of those for my mother now. Very interesting cycle. If you look up the cycle, it correlates with the sounds it makes.

You've got two tanks. it cycles between flowing in one way, then "blowing off" in the other. Makes a "cheep, shoosh" sound.

This one takes a few seconds to a minute to build up O2 concentration on the output. It has lights that indicate that.

Finally found a good graph of something I was looking for:
https://tinyurl.com/ywxm5vzt

This is Vernal equinox dates from 1800 - 2200. Note the saw tooth thing, and then the big jumps. That's leap years and the Gregorian 400 year cycle in action.

2000 was a leap year, representing the first 400 year century leap year since the Gregorian was instituted (well not counting 1600). Note for the rest of this century, the equinox is going to get earlier and earlier until 2100. By 2050, it will be the 19th in UTC/Zulu and will get to nearly noon UTC.

There are also molecular sieves that let molecules of one gas through, but block others. I was on a couple of underbalanced wells, where they used nitrogen foam as drilling fluid. They had "Genron" units, several of them to "make" nitrogen from the air, each the size of a semi trailer, and full of Diesel engines and compressors.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 20, 2024 01:58 AM (tkR6S)

430
For the next 300 years after 2100, the equinox will trend later, that's the Gregorian doing it's thing.

But, it won't be quite right, and the long term trend over 1000s of years will be earlier and earlier. The Gregorian still adds too many leap days.

If the mean tropical year and the mean solar day remained constant, the calendar would get out sync by one day somewhere in the Year 4000 range.

But due to Milankovich cycle behavior, and the slowing of the Erf's rotation, the Gregorian will get out of sync by closer to a day than not by the year 3200.

Turns out that a fix for this would be to skip the leap year in 3200, continue as normal to the year 4000, then switch to a 500 year century leap year cycle rather than 400.

That would keep the calendar in sync for maybe 10000 years.

436 I think I'm done. Got another phone call in the a.m. in violation of sales call rules (but when do scammers from India ever abide by those?). I do get some joy when they call. I say, "Hello, who is this?" and when I start hearing a voice I say "Press 1 to continue" and mute the phone. They'll talk for a while, then say, "Hello? Hello?" and finally give up. Wastes their time, not mine.

By that date, if humanity hasn't extincted itself, we will probably have a way of adjusting Earth's rotation or orbit to make the calendar exact.

Note they figured all this out a few decades before Kepler, and well before Newton. The Gregorian kept the calendar in sync for 3000 years, just based on their observations of the cycle ratios.

That's pretty impressive.

Compassion/Empathy and the patience of Job. And smart as a whip. That subservient "Hop-Sing" thing was just her way of getting her job done. And it worked well.

I heard her talking normally to other staff there. Very business like and professional.

Her "non-verbal" communication with me illustrated that. I found a chair in the hall to sit down while they worked with my mother in states of indecency as necessary.

She wheeled the old lady in, and I gave her a look that said, "Should I get out of your way?". She gave me a look back that said, "Nah, you're good. Stay put."

And again, after it was over, she gave me a look that said, "Ain't I good?"

456 Morning, all you insomaniacals! Up earlier than I planned. Can't blame it on Stirling the black cat, either. On the good hand, it's cool, 53 F., humidity fairly low, not much wind -- so a workout should be only a decent amount of sweat.

At work, I continue to wrestle the Budget Alligator. My spreadsheet's salary numbers match what the data platform says they should be. Still, though, the revenues & expenses don't match. At this point I'm ready to quote Bob Newhart, who said his (rather unpopular) philosophy as an accountant was, "As long as we're within two or three bucks of it --"

Never, Debby. I am wondering if my rough calc of my state tax is correct. At first I thought I'd have to send an ungodly amount, then I read the instructions more carefully and saw I can deduct the Fed-taxable portion of my SS. Current debt appears to be $9.00. I don't want to pay a tax prep service when the matter is that small. There are free tax help services -- but they all limit the income you can have to qualify, and I think I make or receive too much.

Well, if I file this early (it's not due until 5/15), if something's wrong they can tell me and I can correct it before the deadline.

464 Praise for technology: Darned if I know what I did before I had a microwave. I put off getting one for years, thinking I didn't really have counter space for it; and I still don't. But finally I bought one a couple years back. It saves me time:
Cooking a frozen dinner is maybe ten minutes with the MW, whereas it would be fifty minutes in the oven. Prob. saves on my power bill too. And when I want to reheat my coffee, instead of pouring it into the kettle and waiting for it (and it never tastes right when reheated that way), fifteen to sixty seconds in the MW, and done.
