The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The whole Seattle is dying is such a meme and is bullshit. As far as the racial justice movement that started at the same time, there is nothing to recover from.” Randy Saldinger
Who is so blind if he sat on a pin he would be blind in both eyes.

Quote II

"Senior execs somehow think that people in the office are more productive than at home, even though there's no evidence to back that up." Professor Cary Cooper, an organizational psychologist and cofounder of the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing At Work
And he who has the gold makes the rules Professor.

Quote III

"To prevent the possibility of being attacked in your home, leave your fobs at your front door, because they're breaking into your home to steal your car,” Toronto Police Service Constable Marco Ricciardi

Sen. Bernie Sanders (Communist Independent-Vermont) would like to keep the inflation wagon rolling.

Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, introduced a bill to establish a four-day US working week.

Studies and pilot programmes have shown that four-day workweeks can increase productivity and happiness. Given Republican control of the House and a Senate split 51-49 in favour of Democrats, however, the legislation stands little chance of success.

“Moving to a 32-hour workweek with no loss of pay is not a radical idea,” Sanders said on Thursday. “Today, American workers are over 400% more productive than they were in the 1940s. And yet millions of Americans are working longer hours for lower wages than they were decades ago.

Moving soon to Montana to be a Dental Floss Tycoon?

Not Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, 80, of Vaughn, Montana. He wanted to be Sheep Tycoon purveyor of trophy hunts.(H/T Charlie Brown's Dildo)

Court documents describe a yearslong conspiracy, beginning in 2013, in which Schubarth and at least five other people sought to create "giant sheep hybrids" by cross-breeding different species. Their goal was to garner high prices from hunting preserves where people shoot captive trophy game animals for a fee.

Using biological tissue obtained from a hunter who killed a wild sheep in Kyrgyzstan belonging to the world's largest species of the animals — Marco Polo argali sheep — Schubarth procured cloned embryos of the animal from a lab, according to court documents.

The embryos were later implanted in a ewe, resulting in a pure Marco Polo argali sheep that Schubert named “Montana Mountain King,” the documents show. Semen from Montana Mountain King was used to artificially impregnate other ewes to create a larger and more valuable species of sheep, including one offspring that he reached an agreement to sell to two people in Texas for $10,000, according to the documents.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Restlessness Emporium

Since yesterday was some Irish festivity The ONT played Irish musicians. And tonight we will look at a couple of items of music which occurred on March 17th.

On this day: March 17, 1967 - Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix Experience released 'Purple Haze' in the UK, (US release was June 19). Hendrix had read Night of Light, a 1966 novel by Philip José Farmer. In the story set on a distant planet, sunspots produced a "purplish haze" which had a disorienting effect on the inhabitants. It is thought that Hendrix took this as the idea for the songs lyrics. Born on this day: March 17, 1967 - Billy Corgan
Billy Corgan, American musician, songwriter with alternative rock band, Smashing Pumpkins who had the 1995 US No.1 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Via Thisdayinmusic.com

Naked Man, 60, Arrested For Indecent "Scenario" On Florida Beach, Cops Say

Meet Layton Paul Nauman.

The 60-year-old sound engineer went to the beach Saturday afternoon hoping to arrange a sexual encounter or “maybe just go home with someone’s phone number,” according to court records.

While such goals may be commonplace, Nauman’s unusual tactics resulted in his arrest at Blind Creek Beach, a clothing optional spot in Jensen Beach, Florida.

In response to prior complaints about lewd behavior occurring on beach pathways, a sheriff’s deputy was on foot patrol when he came upon a naked Nauman “seated in a recliner chair” with a hat over his face around 12:30 PM.

The right to self protection is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A Texas woman who was drugged and kidnapped turned the tables on her attacker by shooting her dead, she reportedly told police.

Around 12:42 p.m. on March 15, emergency crews reportedly responded to a call from a 45-year-old woman who claimed to have been drugged and kidnapped by an attacker. The alleged victim – from Montgomery – also claimed to have shot the assailant.

The deputies originally did not know the whereabouts of the alleged woman, but located her near a winery.

To clarify, Canada is the new hotbed for vehicle theft. Those stolen in Montreal show up in Toronto and vice versa. The rest end up on a Used Car lot in Dubai. There is a man who has had two vehicles stolen out of his driveway outside of Toronto. The second he hid two Apple Air Trackers in the second one and tracked it. He located it in a shipping crate at the biggest Dock in Toronto, informed his local police who went there, photographed the crate and asked the Dock Police to hold the unit. They refused and sent it to Europe....then to Dubai. The Dock Police are part of the organized crime process....as are the police units covering the train yards.

How is he measuring productivity, by the dollars paid for it? What is the total salary per capita cost, adjusted for inflation (I'll even let dummy use the BS inflation numbers)?

The ones going to Dubai, they aren't even changing the VIN #. The guy I mentioned above hired a private investigator and located his vehicle on a sales lot in Dubai. Hide a cylinder of compressed air in the engine compartment, with an electric valve, and a hose running to the heater ducts. If there is unlawful entry to the car, doors get locked, so they cannot be manually unlocked from inside, engine is disabled, and also power windows. Then a recorded message plays, "Got you now, you bastards. Now, for the poison gas!" And the electric valve on the sir tank gets opened.

I know that's tongue in cheek, but it brings up one of the worst things about living in a totally degraded society in which everyone lies about everything at every opportunity - in such a society, one must kill an enemy, or even an opponent, the instant one gets the first opportunity, since he will do the same to you at his first opportunity. Nothing anyone says can be believed, or trusted, so "society" becomes the constant, brutal and vicious war of All against All. Haiti has now reached that point.

143 Has Trump articulated why he came out in support of Anheuser-Busch?

A case could be made - the workers are American, for logistics and delivery of the booze, regardless of the management that screwed the pooch, porked the poodle, and slapped the cat.

But with said management being distinctly anti-consumer, denigrating the "Frat Boys" that actually bought their swill, there needed to be more than just quickly turning an American flag into a toga and uttering "Eagle" and "Apple pie" in a commercial.

Alissa Heinerscheid ruined a brand in a similar way to Lonesome Rhodes and his hot mic moment in "A Face in the Crowd". And for all that waste and sacrifice, did they get any of their targeted Millenials to switch to drinking Bud?

I wonder what Trump's motive was, other than prodding by Jared Kushner.

-- It has now been revealed that one major reason four of the hijackers were able to move around this country with such apparent ease in the weeks before the Pentagon crash was the fact that they had valid Virginia driver's licenses. How very curious.
As it turns out, they were not American citizens.

They didn't even live in Virginia. But our generally sloppy bureaucrats and avid pro-immigration multiculturalists have been busy-busy making this a country "open" to everyone. They had put through a law in Virginia that allows people to get driver's licenses without providing passports or leases to verify their identity and residence. ...

207 That professor is pretty damn stupid. The fact is there are a number of studies suggesting some efficiencies but mostly no increased productivity for remote work. IT/Sales/Business Development can work from home - and have for many years. Technology is making it easier. Customer service is the other biggie but studies show some do well, and some do poorly. It's from Stanford - he could probably look it up.

But the Philly fed as we were coming out of covid protocols noted the non-manufacturing sector productivity numbers overall were abysmal. That's where all the work from home people were. Manufacturing had to go make stuff - in person. But the Regional Philly bank knows nothing - certainly not worth being a considered position by our esteemed college professor who probably taught kids from home. Just hope their education loss wasn't as significant as the K-12 kids.

348 Have the Boffins brew up some C-4 based, Seat Foam substitute.

Apply the vinyl or leather coverings on the seat frames, per factory specs. With, of course, the addition of timing and detonation systems.

Timer/Detonation = Light sensor, system ARMS after 5 days of Total Darkness. Cause that's the inside of a Shipping Container.

System DETONATES, upon exposure to New Light, when those container doors are opened, after the crane lifts it from ship, drops it onto the delivery truck, and the truck drops it at the illicit sales destination.

No need to sink a ship at sea, which carries the cargo, not knowing the contents are derived from theft.

I think I will drill and tap the slide for a pair of small screws, say 4-40 at 10:00 and 2:00 as viewed end-on, and insert two long screws coated in paraffin wax. Slot the current casting to fit over those screws, make some cardboard barriers to acts as molds, and trowel in some fresh fiberglass around those screws to form buttresses.

For the factory rear sight? No, that stays put in it's original position, but the piece I cast has a channel under to enable getting a sight picture with the iron sights. The mounting plate for the GaiaLoop has a small oblong bar on the bottom that engages a groove I filed across the cast piece, with a screw coming up from below to hold it fixed on top of the cast piece.

Heh. Spent this afternoon fussing with a 1983 INS8073-based SBC. I was a bit surprised when I finally got it going. Built-in Tiny Basic. I/O is via RS-232. All I have is a mostly correct schematic. Most of the time was spent in getting a terminal emulator for the PC to do what I wanted it to, and fussing with getting different cables/sex changers/9-pin/25-pin adaptors all fitted. Trying baud rate/parity/stop bits sorted out. But, triumph! It works.

You need a new product name for it, like "The Laurentian Visualizer" or "The Nunavut Neoenhancer." Your sales line should read "You'll never look at the Great White North the same way again."

For Quebec, you should use "Ce n'est pas depuis Jerry Lewis que nous avons vu une telle interprétation du Dominion dans toute sa splendeur kaldéidoscopique colorée, grise et noire."

I was able, only recently to finally grok Unicode. The trouble was the confusion between Unicode and the encoding scheme for it. Microsoft didn't help. They orignally called an encoding scheme known as UTF-16 (two byte, chunks) "unicode". This greatly confused me. NT (which is now Windows 7 - 11) uses UTF-16 internally.

Nope, UTF-16 isn't "unicode", it's just an encoding scheme for it.

The encoding scheme that now appears to have won out is UTF-8 (which Ken Thompson first invented one night at a New Jersey diner, sketching it out on the proverbial napkin).

UTF-8 looks just like ASCII for the first 128 code points of Unicode. And then it doesn't. It's multi-byte. UTF-16 is also "multi", as some code points require two 16 bit chunks.

UTF-32, 4 bytes per "character" will hold all of them in one unit chunk.

All this gets hair-pullingly complex in the devilish details of the encoding.

Now, once you got the distinction between a codepoint and the encoding of it down pat, you move on to just what the codepoints mean.

Many times a codepoint is just a single character. Other times it is not. Now, we add the distinction between codepoints, graphemes, and glyphs.

I won't attempt to explain that. I think it's clicked in my mind, but it's a mess.

Sticking with 7-bit ASCII means you don't have to worry about that, and regular old American English characters are all there is.

True.

But that 'driving & touching' isn't much different than repeatedly checking speedometer. Only idiots (yeah, :roll take their eyes off the road for more than split-seconds. Not saying that is entirely safe, mind you.

And you have to interact with the screen, to get rid of the message you don't want.

Even if my radio would normally just be there... with no interaction... sometimes I'm asked if it wants to speak english, and the stupid interacting with the screen is dangerous... which makes me interact with the screen.

There was a Brit show I used to watch on PBS called 'New Tricks', from about 2008-2012. It was about cops retired from the Met force -- for at least five years -- becoming an official/unofficial cold case investigative unit. Really good characters in that show and decent stories. Anyway, one actor, Dennis Waterman ('Gerry Standing'), known for tv roles in England, was actually married at one time to Rula Lenska for real. Cracked me up, not having heard her name since the early '80s, except as a bad joke. But then, I'm easily amused.

417 New Tricks was on a lot longer than that. 2003-2015. Waterman was the only actor to be there for the whole run. The show was something of a who's who of actors who became known in the 70s and 80s, especially from cop shows. Though Nicholas Lyndhurst, one of the final season cast, was first known as the younger son in a popular sitcom 'Butterflies'. Some might have also seen him in the recent 'Fraser' reboot.

The series was dedicated to making the middle aged feel their years by seeing actors they'd known as youths playing retirees.

418 >> says you have 3 files with names too long for MSFT to move.

Path length limit for Windows is about 260 characters. About. It depends, but no more than 259 characters including the trailing null for the C string.

There is a registry switch to enable long paths, up to 2^15 characters (32,000 something), but that can have undesirable side effects (some programs will crash).

Best way to get at those long path lengths is to use "Subst" command to make a fake drive letter for part of the path to the files, making the path length relative to that fake drive letter less than 259 characters.

420 New Tricks was the Brit version of Barney Miller, updated into the new Century.

But, with better writing, better production values and better direction.

Acting skills? A toss up. The Barney Miller cast was amazing, given what little they were given to work WITH, as a show.

By and large, their Squad Room WAS the show, and I'd be pressed to recall any given scene that took place outside of that, "the holding cell", and Barney Miller's Office?

Wondering. Are ANY of the Barney Miller cast, yet among the living?

421 I've usually gotten around the problem by copying the files with overly lengthy names to the root of a flash drive, if the addition of the path info is the problem. Another and/or workaround is to open a Notepad to keep a record of the filenames, rename them something short temporarily, get them where they're needed, then revert the filenames. Not 100% solutions but they cover a lot of situations.

Yet another one of those backward compatibility legacy issues Raymond Chen has written much about. A huge portion of Windows problems over the years have been variations of the Y2K syndrome: code that was functional for when it was written and a fair period to follow but not intended to be immortal. Those who control corporate spending, on the other hand, love the idea of immortal apps whose original investment will be squeezed for every last penny.

Posted by: Epobirs at March 19, 2024 02:36 AM (/0z9K)

422 New Tricks was more a more conventional police procedural. There are UK sitcoms that fit the Barney Miller mold better, though few come to mind that like BM were almost entirely enacted in a single room. I recall one episode that was almost jarring when it had Barney visiting Chano in his apartment, when Chano was distraught over shooting a suspect. It was so rare that anything happened onscreen away from the detective's office in the precinct.

Rowan Atkinson starred in a series written by Ben Elton, 'The Thin Blue Line', that would probably be a closer match to a UK Barney Miller.

425 The offending file(s) will usually make itself obvious if you use the right listing method in Explorer. For those adept on the command line there's a variety of ways to handle them. Such ability is something I can admire but never replicate because there is never enough need to practice enough to get good at it. At least, not since the 80s for me. The Amiga was the last system where I really felt a need to master the command line, largely because the GUI wasn't that good and severely constrained by the display resolution of the era.

I'd made an appointment with a Jackson Hewitt office, but I think I'll cancel that now and see if I can confirm with one of the free tax help programs they keep advertising around here. Though they probably think I make too much dough to qualify for those.
