  • Sony's PS5 Pro could be out in time for it to be not available for Christmas. (The Verge)

And also to have no games to play.

It's not a huge upgrade - around 50% faster graphics, same CPU - but that should help with any games that are just not quite smooth enough.

Not that there are any games.

  • Walmart is now selling the M1 MacBook Air for $699. (Liliputing)

Which would be a great price except that's the 8GB model and, of course, you can't upgrade it.

  • Someone out there is worth $70 billion, and nobody knows who it is except that it's not Craig Wright. (WCCFTech)

Bitcoin was invented by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. Australian "computer scientist" Craig Write claimed to be the person behind the pseudonym, but just had his claims thrown out in court as being laughably without merit.

Whoever it is owns over a million Bitcoin, worth around $70,000 each.

35 Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals on Earth, in space, and beyond!

I say to myself: What am I doin' here? It's Saturday and I still woke up way early. Grrr. Well, the outside temp is about ten degrees less than yesterday, after a cooling rain in the afternoon. Maybe I can go work out. Tomorrow we expect rain a good part of the day, so no hope for exercise or for washing the car.

36 I read that article from CNBC. Seems most that were laid off were working remotely. Software and data types were hit hard. I work IT in Babylon DC and it seems immune to whatever is going on outside it. Helps if you have a security clearance. If you have some type of TS clearance, you'll find a job around here.

I'm still working on emptying Dad's house. He's been gone 4 years, and siblings are STILL dragging their feet! They claim to want this and that, but haven't made effort to move the various stuff.

Sucks to be them, when I hold that estate sale & get rid of it all, right?

In Da Swamp, many people have garages. But they never use them for their cars, to get them out of the savage sun for ten months a year. They park on the driveway and -- I'm guessing -- use the garage for storage.

When I have my house and garage, the latter will be for the car *first*, storage second. Though I know that, like work expanding to fill the time allotted for it, personal possessions tend to expand into available space.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 16, 2024 05:31 AM (omVj0)

Morning to you, JQ,

Do you at least have a carport? Something to keep the rain, snow, and sun off the car? Houses I've been looking at on Realtor sometimes have both a carport and a garage, y'know, belt and suspenders time. I envision myself in sunny or rainy warm weather parking the car in the carport outside the side or kitchen door, but storing it indoors for snow or cold nights.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 16, 2024 05:41 AM (omVj0)

71 Wolfus--

No carport here. There's a tree for shade from setting sun (plus, provides much bird poo!) but that's all.

JT--

No, I was able to park in my former garage! Daily driver in one bay, pickup in the other. It was awesome to not need to scrape windshield in cold weather!

72 Tech layoffs?!? No way!

The laptop class thinks the lesson of Covid is that companies could run just fine with the non-execs working from home. The true lesson learned was that the companies could run just fine with the non-execs gone completely.

73 Thanks to FJB and the current junta, I can't even dream of moving out of this dump. Okay, it's not really a dump, but I h8 this house! I h8 that there's no carport, no garage, no furnace, no a/c...

It's my own fault.

Of course it passed, in an off-time election (May? we have quarterly "elections" at county-level). They probably handed out 'absentee' ballots to all the dipsh!t 18yr olds in HS-- "Here! Want a brand-new skool? Vote!"

95 Just took a look at my state tax form. Apparently this hellhole has a new dodge: They consider your state taxable income to be the same as your federal, *before* the standard deduction! And everything above a certain income level (where I fall under this new scam) gets taxed at 4.25%. They did not do that even last year, where I earned as much as I did now, but was due a $3.00 refund. If nothing changes, I may owe 2/3 of the refund I got from the Feds.

There's a form I haven't looked at that may change things, but somehow I doubt it. It wouldn't be so horrible if the state actually spent the extortion on something useful, like drainage or roads, but clearly that's not important.

And the state does not tax SS -- but this "adjusted" federal amount was *before* SS was deducted on my fed return. Something is wrong here.

While he might have been born in Ireland, Varadkar is hostile to the traditional Irish culture. It is becoming quite obvious that there is a yuuuuge problem with high-caste Indians having no loyalty or understanding of Western Civilization and the countries with welcomed their parents when they immigrated from India.

It all depends on their attitudes towards their new country. I have a brother-in-law that married an Indian girl many years ago. She is completely Americanized, converted to Catholicism; unlike her siblings, she also did not teach their kids any Indian traditions.

1) I suspect the "get Whitey" attitude stems from resentment over "the Raj.' Of course, the fact that India has been an independent country since 1949, and absent English as an official language, would have fallen apart apparently doesn't factor in their thinking.
2) "Whitey" was naive and assumed that the Indians loved their adopted country as much as the native-born citizens. Empirical data is demonstrating the error in that assumption.

After reading this article from the Daily Signal, I'm more inclined to believe that the judge in Atlanta is brilliant and despises the wayward Big Fani prosecutor.

He has nearly totally nuked her entire case. She might as well throw in the towel. There are appeals bombs all over his decision.

I already know he didn't because he's doing what the manager told him not to do.

Or maybe he's just a shitty engineer.

Or maybe he hates Chinese.

Things we didn't have to wonder about 10 years ago.

If you've never had one before you're about to witness a strange phenomenon concerning capacity and "stuff."

Also consider a heavy duty shelf/shelves right from the get-go because it will be easiest then. Build if you can because it's easy and extremely cheap for a much better shelf. Handy:

I like this type myself but with more space between, but make sure your floor / base/ foundation can handle it. It's extremely handy for paint cans and such:

211 Isn't raising property taxes because the house is "worth more" like taxing an item before it's even sold? Taxing assessment value or whatever it's called?
The property may be worth more but my bank account has not increased proportionally to cover that cost, in fact mine is stagnant. The local tax collector needs to wait until I sell.
Posted by: Ciampino - 10 rations = 1 decoration at March 16, 2024 07:16 AM (qfLjt)

The way local/county taxes typically work is they are "supposed" to be assessing that property value based upon the services they provide, ie water, sewage, garbage pickup, police, schools, roads, so not a mark to market. And as that gets more expensive to provide or they add services, they can raise your property taxes by suggesting they added to your house value and it went up by a certain secret sauce calculation that they do.

All the homes in our area have been assessed as worth 50K more than last year. They have been using Zillow as a basis for the new assessments! Oh, and Noo Yawkers coming in and having bidding wars over homes for sale. One owner was asking 465K. Got nearly 600K for his house. From a Noo Yawker. Unreal.
