Inflation Rises "Much More" than Expected; Media Hails Joe Biden's Genius In Finally Curing Americans of Consumerism

Hail the great leader! He brings us political prosperity!

Wholesale inflation rose 0.6% in February, much more than expected

The producer price index, which measures pipeline costs for raw, intermediate and finished goods, jumped 0.6% on the month, double the Dow Jones estimate.

On a year-over-year basis, the headline index increased 1.6%, the biggest move since September 2023.

Two-thirds of the rise in headline PPI came from a 1.2% surge in goods prices, the biggest increase since August 2023, thanks to a 4.4% jump in energy.

Retail sales increased 0.6%, less than expected, while weekly jobless claim filings nudged lower to 209,000.

Wholesale prices accelerated at a faster-than-expected pace in February, another reminder that inflation remains a troublesome issue for the U.S. economy.

This will complicate the Feds' agenda of reducing interest rates to stimulate the economy in order to rig the election for Joe Biden.

Fortune: America hit with one-two punch of bad economic news.

The mighty American consumer has shrugged off months, even years of recession predictions from top economists and Wall Street CEOs. Facing the hottest inflation in 40 years, and aggressive interest rate hikes meant to tame it, consumers have managed to continue spending, enabling the economy to remain on solid footing. But this week, a one-two punch of bad economic data has some experts waiting for another uppercut.

The second straight weak retail sales report, which included a downward revision of January's sales data, has sparked concerns that consumers are finally showing signs of wear and tear after powering through price increases and rising borrowing costs for roughly two years....

At the same time, producer price inflation, which tends to lead consumer price inflation, also came in above Wall Street's expectations for the second straight month on Thursday. It's another piece of data that could put investors' dreams of swift, economy-boosting interest rate cuts on hold, particularly with Fed officials being very clear that they don't plan on cutting rates until inflation is well under control. As Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial, put it: "For the data dependent Fed, this report isn't helpful."

Or for Biden.

Related: Despite President Confabulation's claims, the company did not reduce the size of Snickers bar because of corporate greed and artificial "shrinkflation."

No, the size of the Snickers bar was reduced because the company was attempting to obey Michelle Obama's "Eat Less, Move More" campaign. They tried to deliver a lower-calorie candy by making it smaller, as Michelle Obama demanded.

CNN states that the 2 to Go Snickers resealable package includes two smaller snickers bars containing 220 calories each. The move from King size to the 2 to Go package was officially announced in 2012, explaining that the new language and resealable packaging was meant to encourage consumers to share or save the second Snickers bar to eat later. The outlet stated that the confectionery company also said they planned to replace or eliminate all candy bar sizes which contained over 250 calories by the end of 2013. According to NPR, downsizing from the then standard two ounce and 280 calorie Snicker bars to a 250 calorie bar represented an 11 percent shrink.

Reason stated that Mars' decision to only sell lower calorie portions of their products was, in part, inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, which was designed to help combat childhood obesity.

They won't. This is a fallacy, and one I don't understand because there are so many easily-remembered counter-examples in recent history.

The Fed loves playing politics and craves stability above all else, but it is not omnipotent. It tries but fails to "manage" the economy fairly regularly and it has a long history of defending the dollar when it has to.

The tech wreck happened just after an election, but started turning over before the election. The Fed couldn't stop it.
The housing bubble popped - and took the entire financial system with it - in an election year.
The capital markets collapsed and the Fed impotently cut interest rates into an unstoppable maelstrom during COVID - in an election year.

The Fed is out of options. There's no point playing the games. The games can only make things worse, and Powell knows it. Late last year, I predicted no more than two desultory (minimum - 0.25%) rate cuts this year, if that. I stand by that. I think zero is more likely. I do think the Fed will try to avoid raising them this year.

42 On a serious note, would could bring down inflation by unleashing our energy sector.

Additionally, we could try to revive our manufacturing sector.

We need an actual increase in goods to deal with the manufactured money OR we need to pull more of that manufactured money out of the system. (That's the raising of rates.)

We can't afford to do the second for long (interest on our massive government debt) and our rulers can't stand seeing the U.S. produce goods.

So we're screwed unless we can install a new government over the massive amounts of fraud our current rulers will commit.

"Signs of wear and tear." Interesting way to put that.

It's "wear and tear" - really just plain old reduction - in credit capacity. The overextension is approaching its limits. When you fall short, charge it. When you can't charge it, cut things out. (both of these happen simultaneously, of course, but the mix matters at the macro level - and the mix is slowly starting to favor cutting rather than charging, mainly because the capacity to charge it is approaching limites)

THAT is what is causing core inflation to rise. You cannot take up to 40% of your economic activity, and have it do nothing except create order (or friction). Governments create no product. they don't make stuff. they don't mine. they don't farm... and we are still creating Dollars out of thing air (deficit spending) to create this Yuge amount, of nothing.

Reported levels of inflation specifically exclude energy and food. Only durable goods count because the inflation rate of that has, historically, been lower so it makes the uniparty look better. That's why the media, et al, are always so confused when people talk about inflation because the normies are affected by all the stuff they pretend doesn't matter.

__________

The companies that make up the stock market -- publicly-traded companies -- are doing fine. Some sectors are doing great. The last round of quarterly earnings was mostly in-line with expectations, and for some companies they exceeded expectations.

It's the smaller, private companies that are struggling, along with many consumers who don't have stock portfolios or incomes to absorb Biden's sky-high inflation.

As I've been saying for a long time now, the public-traded stock market is not a good indicator of the overall health of the economy. It's more an indicator of how the affluent investor class is doing. And that investor class is doing very good.

Additionally, we could try to revive our manufacturing sector.

We need an actual increase in goods to deal with the manufactured money OR we need to pull more of that manufactured money out of the system. (That's the raising of rates.)

Those new dollars either go to inflation up or to buy created goods.
Nothing in our economy can absorb those dollars but energy or manufacturing.

I'm just glad the idiots have stopped spouting the bs on how they can tame inflation this time just like Volcker did.

159 Proving the experts wrong, the Biden economy is booming while reducing inequality...Economists expected a recession because the Federal Reserve had hiked interest rates to fight the post-COVID inflation we’d been experiencing. Interest rates went up 5 full percentage points in 15 months.

the Biden economy appears to have avoided that scenario. Instead, we’re experiencing what Paul Krugman called “a better-than-Goldilocks soft landing.” Inflation has dropped from wicked high back down to under control. It has just about reached the Federal Reserve’s target rate of 2% annual price increases over the past few months (a couple of slightly contradictory data points released in mid-February do not reflect a shift in the overall positive trend...). a small amount of inflation is actually better than no inflation at all...

The Biden economy has thus made historic progress in reducing economic inequality. @arindube The Black/white wage differential stopped falling by 1980. Since then, it rose from ~20% to ~24% in 2018. Then it fell, and stands under 16% today, an all time low.

Finland used to have a policy of being very polite to Russia, while having a large military. (That policy has been modified somewhat.)

They think that with an American nuclear guarantee, that they can do that without consequence.

This will be a good use for Gemini. The woke, offensive, incorrect image generation grabbed the headlines but the rest of it is just as bad. Bad behavior in text, however, requires more effort to assess than bad behavior in images. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

This use case will be text, not images. And Gemini can spread its poison more subtly and with far less context.

Perhaps.

Or perhaps those countries think that reconquest by the Russians - either preemptively or as the result of the decline of their Western benefactors and protectors causing a power vacuum that Russia has historically filled - is inevitable and so they can risk nuclear war *now* with a mega-player on their side to take the hits for them, or risk it *later* without that backstop and less ability to outsource the defense against it.

A 5% interest rate cannot overcome $1 trillion in new debt every 100 days.

I'm also 100% positive that neither Trump nor most Republicans in Congress have any intention of really addressing it either. They want someone else to be the responsible parent that says "no" when they're gone.

Best case scenario would be a Trump Presidency and Republican Congress, and they'll take us to $950 billion in debt every 100 days.

Whether you have a billion dollars, or a mortgage-free retirement home, or just a dime in your pocket or a single grain of rice at the bottom of a burlap sack, there is *someone* who wants to steal it and will find it worth stealing.

The root cause of our present inflation is too many dollars chasing too few goods.
1 TRILLION dollars in new debt...every 100 days. And now, the single biggest line item in the Federal Budget is debt service.
THIS IS A PLAN TO CRASH THE CURRENCY.
This is not a "whoops! wow, how did that happen?"

They want to wreck the dollar, take your IRA's and 401K's, replace them with some worthless government "IOU's" and go to a central bank digital currency. Only it won't necessarily be "central bank", but the BIG FIVE (ie, JP Morgan Chase, Citi, Wells-Fargo, BankofAmerica, Comerica) will institute their own digital system, which won't be up for a vote, but will become (by plan and coordination) the defacto currency.
And that will be end of freedom in America. You will do what you are told and not be "free" to choose.

The West has been trying to avoid the grim necessity of resetting inflated values since the 1930's. The reason why the Gop nor Trump dealt with government spending in Trump's first term is that the Gop refuses to cut spending and Trump, after his first budget spending cuts was tossed by the Gop dominated Congress, shrugged and said ok.

To rightsize the federal budget will require a lot of shared austerity for it to be politically palatable. You can't cut Social Security unless you get rid of federal welfare payments. You can't get rid of bloated defense budgets without going back to a rightsized defense obligations, and so on.

Basically, the US and most of the West is going to have to crash onto the rocks before some political deals become possible with everyone sharing pain.

Financiers are some of the more stupid people in the world because the easiest thing for indebted people to do is to liquidate their creditors historically. See Phillip the Fair of France for example. Russian Revolution is another one. And so on. Because money motivates financiers, they believe everyone is for sale as low class rentboys like they are. That is a bad bet historically. No one other than a committee of intellectuals could ever dream up something as stupid as their new world order.

His original budget was actually quite conservative but Trump would be damned if he would spend his political capital on unfulfilled budget cuts when the supposed green eyeshade Paul Ryan refused to even consider cutting the largesse of the welfare state.

Politics is always the art of the possible and that window for a particular policy waxes and wanes. There is no appetite politically for austerity until the crash happens because quite actually--asset holders are going to get reamed. There is a reason why places with long histories emphasize education and human capital along with gold, silver, etc. because you can take that with you and eat during really bad times.

Investors in land, buildings, stocks, etc. depend on a sound rule of government and sound currency. Bad times kill that.

Social Security is like the one benefit that the government owes people fr forcing them to pay into it and is actually based (somewhat) on what you put in.

Social Security is the most easily fixed program--move the retirement age up. Disability in a similar fashion to VA--use percentages for payments instead of total or none. Keeps workers in the workforce better than the alternative.

Medicare, general welfare transfer payments, and Medicaid are the largest rapidly growing line items along with ballooning interest and then there is defense. A large proportion of defense spending is for care for its retirees and payroll expenses. Professional armies instead of conscript armies are typically expensive and thus often are smaller than necessary.

For the money we are spending for a particular defense structure, we are overcommitted militarily across the globe and essentially operating on credit for past performances.

Preferably no more than 3 new clothing items per year. Who needs clothes in this new Garden of Eden anyway?

441 Over the weekend there were reports that Trump was on the phone to Speaker Johnson telling him it's vital we send Zelensky a lot of money, and then he gave a speech denouncing DeSantis for no reason.

The best salesman for NeverTrump is Trump.

yeah, i'm going to have to see the raw, unedited tapes with good audio to be able to know what was actually said.

wait, you mean it's not actually taped just heard about?

oh that's TOTALLY trustworthy...

442 There's a report out that shows Google interfered in elections over 40 times.

They interfered on behalf of Our Democracy(tm), so it's fine.

Or to ask them to take Harry and Meghan back.

2. Gonna need a link to speech before I believe anything.

451 419 I have a better idea. No SS or Medicaid for illegals. I am so tired of being told that we have to bump up the retirement age. There are no jobs out the for 70 year olds.

Posted by: Notsothoreau

When Social Security was instituted, it did not project that the average person living to 65 would live for another 19.6 years collecting benefits. It projected the average person back then would live for about 5 years collecting benefits.

For a sound program, you either have to raise the retirement age or increase taxes a lot or both.

Medicare is in worse shape. The amount of taxes would require a substantial massive tax increase or curtailment of benefits via caps etc. .

The point is, politically, to fix Social Security and Medicare, you have to also cut/eliminate all the other perks that other groups are getting--federal retirees, and so on. That is the only way to effectively reduce the budget politically if EVERYONE shares the pain.

If anyone is interested in this line of thinking, come help clean out my closet. I have so many clothes, very nice clothes, that are 1. Not the right size and 2. My work uniform is leggings. I have zero need.

This is after 2 purges and donating to women’s shelters. I shouldn’t really admit this so freely.

CNN, 3/8/24 - After dismissing the former president's case last month against retired British intelligence officer Christopher Steele and his company, Orbis Business Intelligence, Judge Karen Steyn has ordered Trump to pay £300,000 ($385,000) to the company, according to court documents

464 The deficit can easily be explained in one simple phrase: The Parasite Class.
Who is the Parasite Class, one may ask? It is the Government at all levels. Ponder this: 85% or so of the Government workforce should not be there at all and are only there due to unionized featherbedding AFSCME.
How to fix:
1) Eliminate all Federal departments and agencies that are not specified in The Constitution. Fire them en masse and convert their pensions to Social Security.
2) OUTLAW ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE UNIONS.
3) Sell the buildings and equipment of the closed agencies. Sell the vast tracts of land in the West. None of the sales can go to foreigners.
4) Deport all illegal aliens forthwith. If they can't prove that they are here legally, they get deported within a week.
5) Take a long hard look at the welfare roles and make a genuine effort to purge those unworthy.
6) Make every agency that is left after the big purge account for every dollar. . . . .just like the IRS does to us.

Feel free to add to the list
