The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Thread & Prayer Revival

3 9 24 c0ffee.jpeg

(It also halts my desire to strangle the living bejeebers out of certain people)

*****

Good morning Horde. Hope you are all well this 6th Saturday of the week. Before we enter KT's Prayer Revival, there are a few housekeeping matters to take care of. (Rulz for those of you in Cazenovia)

A. This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
B. Be nice to one another, even the trolls have feelings
C. If you must run with sharp objects stay away from others.
4. Have a great weekend.

*****

A couple of weeks ago we looked at a $20K coffee maker. How much would you pay for a candy bar? The answer may surprise you. I remember buying a bottle of pop and a candy bar for a quarter. (Get off my lawn!!)

A chocolate bar sold at auction for almost $700.
Among the highlights of a Christie's auction in London in September 2001 was the record-breaking sale of a Cadbury's chocolate bar to an unidentified buyer for a whopping £470 ($687).

*****

Before we seek sanctuary in the Prayer Revival, there is a big "Thank You" to Annie for compiling the Prayer Revival for us Morons.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

2/3 -Washington Nearsider has been and remains sincerely grateful for the prayers and well-wishes of the Horde. He has withdrawn his TSP and has enough money left to get through late March – early April. He will accrue debt with the custody hearings which begin 3/6. He has 3 interviews scheduled for the week of 2/5. He is also attempting to expand his custom model building services to bring in additional income by leaning on 20 years of experience building models of all kinds: building planes, tanks, ships, etc. Please contact him through the comments or email Annie’s Stew, and she can send you his direct contact information. He sends his thanks for his daily dose of sanity in an otherwise crazy world, and for the constant stream of wonderful Fani Willis euphemisms.
2/28 Update – Washington Nearsider has learned that this coming Wednesday, he is likely to lose full custody of his two young children until he can replace the salary he lost after being removed from his federal position. While he is still pursuing a higher-level job, he has started working at the local Home Depot, more to keep his children insured than for the wages. He has several more interviews over the coming week or so and hopes that at least one of them will pan out. His savings will run out in about three weeks, and then things have the potential to become extremely difficult; however, three weeks is three weeks, and anything could happen between now and then.

2/3 – Reforger asked for prayers for his Coworker, “D”, a widowed mom of 4 who is having a rough time with daughter #1. The daughter is skipping school, was caught 3 times and now police and social workers are involved. “D” is beside herself. She is having to miss work (and pay) to do probation stuff and keep appointments with “therapists”.
2/10 Update – Reforger reports that Coworker “D” and her daughter are doing better. He also relayed a funny story that ended up with him being able to bless “D” with another $200!
3/2 Update – Coworker D’s daughter had to be incarcerated. She went nuts, trashed her room, broke things, and even kicked a cop. She could use a lot of prayers.

2/3 – Fenelon Spoke asked for “P”, who needs prayers for his return to faith as a Christian. Also, prayers for Pam, who needs continued healing after a pacemaker insertion, are appreciated.
2/24 Update – Please keep praying for “P” and his faith.

2/10 – Berserker-Dragonheads Division is in the hospital. He had a cardiac cath, then was sent straight in for bypass surgery.
2/11 Update – He had 2 arteries 100% blocked, 1 that was 95%, and another that was 80%. So he had a quad. He says the hospital and staff are great.
3/2 Update – He is healing well ahead of schedule.

2/17 – Muldoon humbly asks for prayers for his daughter Michele, for healing. She has suffered for years from severe debilitating migraines that have resulted in her becoming largely withdrawn from society.

2/20 – Lady in Black requested prayers for her stepmother, Bonnie. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 9 years ago. About 2 years ago, it came back and she had a mastectomy. Now she has a lump showing in her lung and is getting ready to have a biopsy. She is depressed and very worried. Any prayers for her would be greatly appreciated.

2/21 – TecumsehTea sends many thanks for the prayers for Pastor Joe. He had his post-surgical followup today. Stitches are out, no radiation or other treatments are needed. In 3 months he will have another MRI.

2/21 – Prayers for the family and friends who mourn the loss of GnuBreed.

2/24 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for Joanne, who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, stage 4. Prayers are also needed for Karen, Joanne’s niece, who will have to manage things for Joanne (as the closest family member).

2/26 – Alex the Chick reported that Bandersnatch passed away last night.

2/27 – rhennigantx asked for prayers for his friend Tim, who had a stroke on Sunday.
3/9 Update – Prayers are still needed for Tim and his daughters. They are moving Tim to a rehab hospital.

2/29 – DaveT asks for prayers. We had prayed in the past for him, as he was trying to save his cats and his home from repossession (due to a relative who burdened the family home with debt). DaveT is over 65 and is not able to work much. The cats are elderly and one is blind, and the only family he has. Things had turned around and it looked like he was going to be fine last summer, but now a new judge is on the case and seems to want to kick DaveT and the cats out of the house. Please pray. If anyone wants to contribute, Annie’s Stew has the details of his givesendgo.

3/2 – Sa: tolle adversarium et afflige inimicum at asked for prayers for those affected by the Panhandle wildfires. Many still own their land, but literally nothing else.

3/2 – Eromero thanked the Lord for the many blessings already received, for placing each of us on His path, and for the strength to resist temptation, and for Jesus, who paid for our sins.

3/2 – Matthew Kant Cipher asked for prayers for his SIL, whose brother (late forties) died suddenly/unexpectedly this week.

3/2 – FortWorthMike sent some updates. The good news is that his grand niece, who we prayed for when she was in need of a kidney transplant, celebrated her 5th birthday. She is doing well. She is still trying to learn to eat, as she was tube fed since birth. She has a long journey, but the kid is amazing and FortWorthMike attributes it to the miracle of our prayers finding her a donor. The bad news is, his MIL suffered a fall several months back. He got her through the broken bones, but they found cancer. She has been through chemo and radiation. As she is 87, it took a lot out of her. She could use prayers for strength and healing.

3/2 – Vmom posted and asked for prayers for her pup, who had emergency surgery a couple of weeks ago. He popped a couple of stitches and has to wear the cone for a few more weeks. Also, her husband is having issues recovering from Covid.

3/2 – Artruen asked for prayers for his sister. Her son “Mick” was killed on his motorcycle a few weeks ago on his way to church. Mick was a good man: a proud US Marine (three tours in hot zones), proud American, proud Texan, proud father of two beautiful children. He lived hard and fast and is greatly missed.

3/2 – Fox2! Asked for prayers for Margaret K (to overcome alcoholism), Brooke V (to watch over her, a young woman from a broken family), Janet K (to guide and watch over her and her family).

3/3 – Commissar of Plenty and Lysenkoism in Solidarity with the Struggle to maintain Moron standards asked for prayers as he is scared to death of some much-needed surgery. Pain, healing, iyiyi! Even the red tape involved in scheduling. Thank you all again!

3/9 – Jim (in Kalifornia) posted that his father-in-law passed away.

3/9 – Mindful webworker posted that his beloved wife (MiladyJo) will be having a second hip replacement. Prayers that this one also goes well, and ends years of terrible pain.

3/9 – Cybersmythe had a job interview. It went well, but he is asking for prayers that it went well enough.

3/9 – RedMindBlueState asked for prayers for her dear friend who miscarried Wednesday. Again.

3/9 – Halfhand asks for prayers and support for her dear friend and former neighbor, Kathleen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She has undergone a double mastectomy and is healing well. She starts radiation in March and the first reconstruction surgery in April.

3/9 – Emmie sends her thanks to the Horde for their prayers on behalf of Mr. Bassman as he recovers from knee replacement. He’s doing great! He is dedicated to his PT routines.

3/9 – Hadrian the Seventh asked for prayers for Her Majesty, who is having knee replacement surgery. He’d like prayers for a successful operation, but also an uneventful recovery. Her previous surgery in 2019 (on the other knee) was marked by great pain and the effect of the medication was terrible.

3/9 – Piper sent news about her daughter and her eye issue. Her doctor said the MRI results were everything they hoped for, that he knew the radiologist and trusts the reading. At this point, they will wait 6 months and then check again. But he said they should celebrate – doctor’s orders!

3/9 – Dr_No asked for prayers for his daughter, Megan. We had prayed for her in 2021, when she had cancer. Her cancer is still in remission, but she has blood clots in her lungs. She went to the local ER, where they said everything was normal. She sent a message to her PCP, to ask her to review the situation. She is still weak, and gets tired if a conversation lasts more than 1-2 sentences. Please pray that she be restored to full health. Thanks once again to the Horde for the help.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

11 Ah, the Prayer Thread. It's been a good week. Took the youngest to Reconciliation Wednesday evening at the downtown parish and we walked over to Cane's and got carryout. I'm trying to make worship more joyful by including side trips.

Light penance, too, which was nice.

Thursday cut out of work to take in a daily Mass (per my Lenten vows) at the neighborhood parish with the attached school. Love watching the kids because it reminds me of when mine were that age.

I found a photo from that era and observed over dinner last night that those were the days when we actually liked each other, which got a laugh.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at March 16, 2024 08:27 AM (llXky)

12 carried over:

"After reading this article from the Daily Signal, I'm more inclined to believe that the judge in Atlanta is brilliant and despises the wayward Big Fani prosecutor."

Three dimensional chess strategy demands that you pass up an opportunity for checkmate in favor of somebody else maybe coming along later to do it.

13 For some unknown reason our new drip coffee maker has a selector switch on the side of the basket for full drip or no drip. If it is inadvertently set to "no drip" the water is heated and drips into the basket, but the outlet valve from the basket doesn't allow any water to drip into the carafe, causing the basket to fill up and overflow and drip all over the counter top, carrying coffee grounds everywhere. What a dumb feature.

This is how I started my day.

“By decorating during Ramadan, the city of Frankfurt is sending an important signal to Muslims and appreciates the people of Muslim faith in this city,” the governing German Green Party wrote in an application to the city council last year.

“They are lights of togetherness, against reservations, against discrimination, against anti-Muslim racism, and also against anti-Semitism,” said Frankfurt Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg, of the same party.

----
That's so if you are impatient or in a hurry for that cup, you may remove the carafe and fill your cup, without the machine dripping coffee all over the counter. Supposedly for use for a short time (filling a cup time) and not forgetting about it. Now mine has it built-in the outlet above the carafe: if one removes the carafe, the valve drops and stops flow.

Don’t hold it against me but I have a good sized collection of Starbucks coffee cups. 76 Ok, here's my coffee quirk. Wallymart sells a store brand (Great Value) bar of baking chocolate. It's different from all the other brands of baking chocolate on the shelf in that the ingredients are listed as simply "chocolate liquor."
I break it up into little pieces (~1/2" square) and put one in each cup of coffee.
No, it doesn't dissolve all the way despite vigorous stirring, but it leaves a delicious residue at the bottom of my favorite Shenandoah National Park coffee mug which I may (or may not) extract with a deft swipe of my index finger as a dessert treat at the end of my morning caffeine infusion.

I moved away from a true tabbouleh (I made myself one the week before and decided while I don't mind parsley in that quantity, it may ping the bitter level for too many people) and turned it more Mediterranean. It was a huge hit. So, it's another "put it on the rotation for next year when it's hot again" dish...

Newer ones are. Mine is. As San Franpsycho said, his usage (compliance) and ID was stolen.

I think my CPAP supplier was hacked, not my device. I got a well crafted email from them a couple days ago saying I had two invoices that would be billed to my credit card on file with them.

I haven't placed an order with them since January.

The email was very well crafted... proper logo, fonts, reply emails, etc. The only thing about it was a button to "change payment type." That doesn't typically appear.

I called the company and they were clueless.

Amen to that! I have to say that this year feels very different from the last few. I have this strange sense of optimism, that the tide has turned and that will things are going to get crazier, it will all work out in the end. Maybe it's a function of my zany faith journey, over-exposure to holy relics or sleep deprivation from the grandkids being here, but it's undeniable.

Going through the day I just get weird moments of satisfaction for no apparent reason. I told my confessor I just feel different and I can't explain it or accurately describe it.

142 I wrote about this before, but the thought just occurred to me again. What if Covid-19 really was a super-deadly disease? We still have no idea how many Chinese died because covering up disasters is a trait the Chinese have developed over 2,500 years. They're experts at pushing official lies.

So what if it was awful, and all the hysterical bumbling countermeasure were really necessary and then God withheld His hand because we prayed like maniacs. Does anyone remember that? Eucharistic processions, special devotions, outdoor services - they closed the church doors but they opened up our faith.

And we learned so much, didn't we? The veil was rent in two, and now there is a surge of faith that no one expected or could have predicted. Public schools were utterly exposed and religious ones are being overrun with student applications.

I'm increasingly seeing the world in a radically different way, and I rather enjoy it.

Side lighting with a strong light source over an area of lawn cut very short at dusk might reveal some textural issues. If someone disturbed a grassy area with a shovel and buried something it's doubtful they would have spent the time to level, rake, and seed the area to the same level of detail as was originally there.

It might just be confirmation of something.

166 I wrote about this before, but the thought just occurred to me again. What if Covid-19 really was a super-deadly disease?...
So what if it was awful, and all the hysterical bumbling countermeasure were really necessary and then God withheld His hand because we prayed like maniacs.

-

I like this thought a lot, especially now that it's come out that - as mentioned above - doctors were apparently prevented by our government from prescribing antibiotics to elderly people suffering from pneumonia so that they would die en masse. Remember the whole "recommended FDA COVID treatment protocol" requirements?

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8459187/

The government and doctors had to purposely kill people because prayers worked.

I like that for what it means spiritually. Very much not for the other part, but spiritually that's awesome.

I think you mean solder flux when you write solder resin.
Yup. Easier to clean with water that the old resin-based solder flux, which required...(environmentally) harsher chemicals at times to clean.
Also, in last 30 years, lots of different pad compositions too. AND the requirement for non-lead solders that went into effect in the late 90's early 2000's. So many changes.

Yeah, Islam's God is entirely random, does what he wants, AFAIK there are no covenants, no unbreakable vows.

And of course, Allah is never addressed as "father."

Something that a lot of people miss because English no longer has a formal/informal case is that the form of "father" is familiar or intimate, as a child would speak to a parent. That's how close God wants to be to us.

He's not the pope we wanted, but he may be the pope we needed. I doubt anyone else could have exposed so much corruption within the Church. His heterodox actions have caused all the infiltrators to reveal themselves because they think the hour of victory is at hand. You'd think cardinals and archbishops might not only have read some scripture but also looked at the Church's lengthy history. Or to put it another way:

If barbarian hordes, the armies of Islam, Nazis and Communists couldn't take down the Church, why would anyone fear a handful of homosexual clerics?

The waiting is part of the point - it gives you time to think about what else you should be doing and perhaps a better way to do what you trying to finish.

A big part of it is training your brain to see good things around you. Some jerk cuts you off in traffic and you think "at least there wasn't an accident." Idiot in front of you futzes away a green light and you think "maybe that saved me from an accident."

I'm trying to get my kids to see the world that way because it's helpful and easier to change your brain when you're 18 than when you're 50.

Instead of raising them to see world filled with faith, spirits, angels and God, we show them perversion and materialism. They are mature only in the sense that they have a fully adult sense of cynicism, but can't handle responsibility or think critically.

We really do need to try to approach God as children, recapture that sense of possibility and joy. Tolkien and Lewis knew this. So did Chesterton. We need to shut off the screens and listen to them.

There could eventually be a pretty noticeable depression in the area - my guess would be a rather few inches. In the dark, with a strong flashlight shown across the soil it would show up easily.

I've heard Bret Weinstein describe it, and I don't really understand it, but my pea brain sees it as a contrast with viruses.

Viruses are outside invaders, they flood the body, armed with keys that allow them to open the doors of our cells, and when they get in, they move the furniture around, create all kinds of havoc, and sometimes set the house on fire until either the firefights come in and kill all of them... or they kill us.

Cancer is a grifter, a cult leader. It talks our cells into fundamentally changing, doing all sorts of bad things they never would have done, if they'd been left to live the way they were designed to. But that conservative cell, with a job, a nice spot, in a nice community? Now he's destroying the neighborhood, and talking other cells into joining the cult too. And if he's not stopped the cult will take over enough to destroy not just the neighborhood, but the entire universe (body) in which it resides.

298 Speaking of cancer, Jordan Peterson's wife will be entering the Catholic Church this Easter. She was diagnosed with a rare and extremely deadly cancer five years ago, they flew from clinic to clinic to get a second opinion, and it was unanimous: write your will, sooner rather than later. A Catholic friend offered to pray the Rosary with her, and so they did this daily.

She experienced a full recovery, and this miracle is what has brought her to the Church.

Remember, conversion is the greatest of all miracles. What good is raising someone from the dead or prolonging their life by a few years when they're still damned?

I've always considered cancer treatment as approaching a certain defined limit of chemo, just a red c hair short of killing the person. Maybe anti-parasitics have to go through enough trials to discover just the *correct* dosage and over what time period starting at just the *correct* time.

It's interesting, that is all. The Soviets did some interesting cancer research where they basically starved the person to near death and it improved outcomes. "Good" cells went into some sort of self protection mode while the cancer died.

I suppose there are analogies all over, that can explain this stuff, but it doesn't help me to overcomplicate it, if I want to understand it.

Cancer is not an outside invader. It's the body, the cells themselves that are corrupted and bent on corrupting/destroying other cells.

And again, whether it's cancer or a virus, if it's destroying otherwise healthy cells, you have to kill it one way or another. Either your body can do it without assistance, or it can't. I'm sure a lot of the prescribe medicines are/were no more or less effective than the various snake oils out there.

Starvation was a quite common part of the human existence, for eons.

Clearly an overabundance of foodstuffs... or facsimiles thereof, isn't really good for one's health either.

Famine was always a localized event, and when civilization emerged, wise rulers understood how to mitigate it by releasing grain reserves or shifting food around. This is why widespread famine has always been a sign that a ruler is incompetent and/or evil.

The Soviets and Chinese created the largest famines their respective nations had ever seen, and did it deliberately. There was no crop failure, no locust plague, just bloody-mindedness.

One might call it demonic.

Remember to remove the lids entirely, before you toss in cans of food. And monitor the waste material that comes back out with the used food cans. If she's saving up your urine, she might be up to something.

Same goes for candles. You give her only enough to keep warm, not to light the shed. If she removes the wicks, rather than burning them, one morning you might find yourself strangled with a makeshift garrote.

Or so they say. I wouldn't know. I don't even have a shed.

The few times I eat out I come prepared with cash. I like to leave the server a generous cash tip, usually in many bills so she (traditionally a she) can decide what to report, what to pocket.

Twenty dollar tip equals four five dollar bills. During covid I know they were having a tough time with fewer customers.

I don't care if she told the boss the cheapskates only left a five dollar tip.

364 Never let it be said that Queen Victoria didn’t appreciate the efforts being made to fight for Queen and Country–after all, we’ve got the chocolate to prove it.

A tin of chocolate has come to light that was one of a batch sent to the soldiers fighting the Boer War in South Africa at the beginning of 1900. The chocolates were paid for by Queen Victoria and reportedly, some 100,000 tins were sent.

The owner of the tin of uneaten 118-year-old chocolate came forward after learning of a news story about chocolate dating to World War One being auctioned.

BTW, the UK Antiques Roadshow had a WW1 British nurse doll made of chocolate; others were also made e.g. a Tommy in soft peaked-cap.

366 The 118-year-old chocolate and tin are being sold in an online auction held by Scunthorpe-based Eddisons CJM Auctioneers and has an estimate of £120.

Paul Cooper, from the auctioneers, said: "This tin was entered as a result of the success of a First World War hero's 1914 Colonies Chocolate Gift Tin which we sold recently.

"A lady from London wrote and said 'Hundred-and-three-year-old chocolate is not so special. I've got a Boer War tin and all of the 118-year-old chocolate is still inside!' "And it is. The chocolate was originally a single block and is now somewhat broken up, but it is all there.

He had been slowly fading away for 1.5 years and the sibs came to visit in December when he had a period of not eating that proved temporary so it is not a shocking blow.
