11 “Landscape paintings were also always entangled with national identity.

“The countryside was seen as a direct link to the past, and therefore a true reflection of the essence of a nation.

“Paintings showing rolling English hills or lush French fields reinforced loyalty and pride towards a homeland.

“The darker side of evoking this nationalist feeling is the implication that only those with a historical tie to the land have a right to belong.”

The Ardennes counteroffensive was not as simple as it looked.

This is not unlike the lots we had cleared over the winter. Neighbors on the next road said they never realized there'd been a house in there (on less than a half acre). I wanted to save more trees, but Tree Guy quickly ID'ed most of them as junk that should never have been allowed to grow up. And wouldn't you know, the four black walnuts were all right on top of adjoining foundations. So, three trees left, out of three dozen, and I have some prime lumber coming.

92 After you clear a stand of woods like that, there is a mat of roots growing over each other just below the surface. You hear a lot about colonial era farmers taking over large tracts and just girdling the trees to kill them, but the ox-and-beam process of root removal doesn't get the coverage. It is thick down there.

Running deep tines and mid-busters behind a Cat is pretty hard on the equipment -- especially the operator's.

104 When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.

Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.

107 It's hard to go wrong with Hudson River School art. It uses all the skills of a painter to find the glorious and sublime in nature. The scenes may be a bit idealized but the colors, details and proportions are true and emphasize nature's beauty and power. Such a celebration is so different from the inchoate mess and nihilism of the 20th century.

Why yes, I am a fan. Why do you ask?

108 But it was Gaines’s follow-up question that left Barr speechless and the panel in shock with Barr’s response.

“If you’re saying that we should get rid of sporting categories altogether, do you support the idea of eliminating the Paralympics versus the Olympics?”

Barr could only muster, “I think that’s a really great question, and I need to look into that…,” leading to a collective gasp from Morgan, Krakue, Tatum, and Gaines, who couldn’t believe what they had just heard.

Okay. First, take a deep breath.

Consider your reaction and attempt to contextualize it.

You describe it as a "strong nationalist feeling." Is that all it is? Is that all you feel? Do you also feel a sense of proprietorship - or even ownership - of the land depicted because of how it represents your culture? Do your feelings also relate to cultural pride, past or present? Does it perhaps also raise feelings of spiritual connection to the work and the lands you recognize as your own? Does it go so far as to put you in a prayerful mood?

These are all things we can work on. Rising nationalist feelings are good, but are low-resolution. You can get better, and contextualize those feelings with greater understanding and development of wider cultural pride and subsequently, a desire to defend your land and culture from those who wish destroy it.

You'll get there. You've already taken the first step.

Reminds me of a tale - possibly apocryphal - from the War. When planning the invasion of France, the Allies used mostly British maps, which had lots of areas marked "Hedgerows." The US war planners chose routes that cut through a lot of them.

When we got there, we learned that "hedgerow" means something quite different to the British. These weren't topiaried shrubbery, they were ultra-dense, damn near primeval hedgerows. It took chainsaws and flamethrowers to cut through them.

Apparently, the Americans assumed they could just drive tanks over them, and the British assumed that Americans had some good way to cut through hedgerows.

If true, of course. I like the story even if it isn't.

RICO charges should be brought against the entire Democratic Party. This is not hyperbole and I am not joking.

Democrats are the most effective and powerful mafia in world history. They have looted taxpayers for trillions, money laundering at every level of government for kickbacks and personal gain. We have dozens upon dozens of instant millionaires in Congress (both parties, to be fair). They have violated their oaths of office, abused power against those who opposed them, trampled the rights of American citizens, signed off on an invasion of our country through the southern border, and conspired with foreign powers like China against our security interests. And their Uniparty co-conspirators should be charged as well.

Neil Diamond played in Denver on New Year's Eve in 1999. There was a lot of speculation that he'd fail to sell out the Pepsi Center (now apparently called the "Ball Arena") because of Y2K fears, since those fears muted a lot of major NYE events and caused a lot of them to scale down.

He did sell it out, or came very close. Apparently it was a very good show.

221 I am sorry, I cannot except that minority voters have swung almost 20% from Biden to Trump. I saw an NY Times article today that non white voters have gone from 75% for Biden in 2020, to 57% in 2024. Either there has been a giant social shift in 4 years and non white voters now embrace a racist despot. Or the polling is seriously flawed.

We win regardless of polls. It is hard for wealth owned media to tell the truth. It is a shame they don't come over to the winning side.

it's hard to see what would drive anyone to support Trump now who didn't already support him in 2020.

The issue is that many minority (non-college educated) voters don't vote based on "racism". The vote based on the same concerns that white non-college educated voters have: the price of eggs, the interest rate on their mortgage, the quality of their kid's schools, etc.

Eggs are down from the bird sickness prices. mortgage is not set by the President in any way. (it's the Fed), and the only people destroying schools is the GOP. But good for them for voting for someone who will ruin their lives.

The country’s health agency warned doctors Monday about an increase in measles cases that in a little more than three months
has equaled all of the U.S. cases last year. There had been 58 confirmed cases of measles in the U.S. this year as of Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, compared to 58 in all of 2023. In the cases this year, 93% were linked to international travel, the agency said. Most of the cases involved children a year old or older who haven’t yet gotten measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccinations. It can also be fatal. In 2021, an estimated 128,000 people, most of whom were children, died from the disease, the World Health Organization says.

Mia Khalifa needs surgery after puck smashed into her breast. Porn star-turned-sports presenter Mia Khalifa is undergoing surgery after her left boob was left “deflated” after being struck by a hockey puck.

The 25-year-old was watching a Capitals playoff game when the 6-ounce puck smashed into her chest. The American-Lebanese babe told the Daily Star: “I was sitting behind the glass during a game, and it came shooting over the glass and it caught me so off guard and I had no idea it was coming.

The American-Lebanese babe told the Daily Star: “I grabbed my chest and I didn’t want to let go, because I felt like if I did let go, blood was going to be everywhere."

“I got to take it home, it was the single greatest souvenir any hockey fan can get: a game-used puck that comes at you and hits you."

Mortgage rates are set neither by the Fed nor the president, but by the primary dealers and US Treasury auction participants and, if you want to go further upstream, by the US Congress.

Mortgages are priced, like everything else, in the face of alternatives. The baseline alternative for a mortgage is a 10-year US Treasury note. The Treasury is the "risk-free" return baseline and like all Treasuries, it is considered a "cash equivalent."

If you're going to lend money to anyone else, it will have to beat the Treasury return. The 10-year is the closest match for how long mortgages tend to last in the real world (people move, refinance, etc. - a 30-year mortgage rarely lasts more than 10 years).

And the 10-year has been shooting up along with most of the rest of the Treasury yields since the government can't stop spending money we don't have like drunken sailors. It's also what's driving inflation, which contributes to a feedback cycle.

Two reasons.

Political answer: because being a minority - especially descended from a largely Muslim country - is worth a lot in our insane Maoist environment.

Practical answer: it's comparatively exotic and porn is a crowded field, so leaning into the exoticism can differentiate and provide a higher return.
